She decided to apply after meeting astronaut Kathryn Hire while the Flagg Officer for VADM Ted Carter, then Superintendent of the Naval Academy. Kayla is part of the Artemis generation of astronauts, which is NASA's return to the moon. This group was handpicked to fly to the international space station and, more importantly, to focus on space exploration and using the moon as a proving ground for Mars.
