In this episode of our weekly gaming podcast, Game Informer's Kyle Hilliard reviews God of War: Sons of Sparta, a new 2D metroidvania that Mega Cat Studios and Sony Santa Monica released during last week's PlayStation State of Play. Unfortunately, it's an underwhelming title. Kyle then explains why he spent $99 USD on Nintendo's Virtual Boy rerelease and what it's like experiencing the headset's strange catalog of games on the Switch 2.

Later in the show, Eric Van Allen dives into Paranormasight: The Mermaid's Curse, a mystery adventure about a cursed Japanese seaside town that has impressed him. Finally, Alex Van Aken shares his thoughts on the rock-climbing simulator Cairn and how it's an excellent example of how games can uniquely tell stories.

It's a news-heavy week on The Game Informer Show, as Ubisoft announced some major changes to its roadmap over the coming years amid numerous delays and game cancellations. Alex, Marcus, and Eric get together to break all that down in the last half of the show, and try to make light of how the Far Cry and Assassin's Creed publisher got here.

Before that, though, the crew talks about two fascinating new indie games they've been playing. Marcus dives into MIO: Memories In Orbit, a new Metroidvania that might be Hollow Knight-levels of difficult. Eric, meanwhile, has been testing his mental mettle with TR-49, Inkle's new mystery game that tasks players with tearing their way through a strange machine.

146 min Transcript

It's a feature-length episode of The Game Informer Show this week. Marcus, Charles, and Eric gather together to discuss the games they've been playing lately, including the charming new 3D platformer Big Hops and return visits to games like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.

Then, the trio get into a discussion about the subscription services in gaming that they still do, or don't, use. From Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus to various battle passes and MMO monthly subs, there are a lot of expenses that can easily add up. Are they all still worth it, or are we cutting some as part of our New Year's resolutions?

It's Thanksgiving week in the US, which means the GI staff is taking some time off, heading to wherever they rest their heads, planning dinners and get-togethers, and getting in some extra game time.

In light of that, we're publishing a special early edition of The Game Informer Show this week with a little twist - rather than a roundtable discussion, we had everyone contribute their own solo take on what they're playing, thinking about, or otherwise getting back into this holiday break! From the 2025 backlog to older games, and even some tabletop options, we've got a boatload of personalized selections from the GI crew. Enjoy!

Ghost Of Yotei, Hades 2, and Silent Hill F Reviews

99 min Transcript
View
October's just about here, and that means we are struggling to stay afloat in a sea of virtual experiences. Marcus, Kyle, and Charles gathered together this week to discuss the big games they've been playing, and oh boy, there are a lot of them.

We start off with Sucker Punch's Ghost of Yotei, followed by Hades 2, both of which seem to be frontrunners for this season's lineup of games. Silent Hill f has caused some consternation and evaluation, perhaps appealing to those drawn to rough edges, and/or creepy knife monsters. Baby Steps toes right in after them, and the show rounds out with Hotel Barcelona, a strange game from two well-known makers of strange games.

Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally available, and we've been playing the highly anticipated Metroidvania. In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we dive into our impressions of Silksong's first act (roughly the first eight hours until the Greymoor area) and boss fights. Beforehand, Marcus interviews Gearbox leads Graeme Timmins and Andrew Reiner (big disclaimer: Reiner was formerly EIC of Game Informer) about Borderlands 4, which was released a few days ago. Finally, we round out the show by breaking down our Hell is Us review, a fascinating investigation puzzle game with action elements. Notably, it's not a Soulslike.

In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, we dive deep into the past to save the future with Cronos: The New Dawn, which sounds cool, but is ultimately fine. It's a solid survival horror game from Bloober Team. We also dive into the latest major update for Deadlock, the new multiplayer game from Valve, discuss why the Trails In The Sky FC remake could similarly popularize the role-playing games like Yakuza 0 did for its respective series in 2017, and talk about Kirby and the Forgotten Land's Star-Crossed World DLC on Switch 2.

In this week's episode of The Game Informer Show, Emmy-nominated writer, comedian, and former Nintendo developer Mike Drucker (The Tonight Show, Bill Nye Saves the World) joins us to discuss our Ninja Gaiden 4 cover story, roguelite first-person shooter Voidbreaker, UFO 50, and his time working on Kid Icarus: Uprising — a formative handheld title for co-host Charles Harte. Later in the show, we laugh about the absurd controls of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D, Lumines Arise, and The Rogue Prince of Persia.

We connected Drucker with legendary game designer Roberta Williams (King's Quest, Mystery House) to discuss her legacy and its impact on his life in a new feature in Game Informer Magazine Issue 371. Drucker's latest book, Good Game, No Rematch, is available now.

The summer is slowly waning, and an autumn packed with new video games fast approaches. Join Alex, Kyle, Charles, and Eric as they take a look at some of the first big games of 2025's latter half, from Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater to early impressions of Battlefield 6 through its open beta.

There's also some details on the strange sports game Drag x Drive from Nintendo, the gorgeous blade-skater Sword of the Sea, the charming indie puzzler Is This Seat Taken?, and our reactions to Gamescom Opening Night Live. Hosts Alex Van Aken, Charles Harte, and Marcus Stewart also discuss their favorite games they played at Summer Game Fest (including Resident Evil Requiem, Ninja Gaiden 4, Pragmata, and Mixtape), and their hands-on impressions with Xbox's new handheld device.

The Journey To Bringing Game Informer Back | GI Show

92 min Transcript
View
Today is an important day. Game Informer magazine subscriptions are back! And so is the Game Informer Show podcast! We recorded our first episode earlier this week before all the Summer Game Fest announcements and before we had Switch 2s in our hands. Apologies for not talking about the absolute latest in video game news, but this first episode back was always meant to be a catch-up and a rundown of what to expect.

Join Alex Van Aken, Marcus Stewart, Charles Harte, and me as we talk about bringing the magazine back, share what we did during our "time off", and share just a few of the games we've been enjoying recently.

Moving forward, you can expect to hear The Game Informer Show podcast every Thursday, and next week we will have a special on-location SGF episode.

Thanks for resubscribing (or never unsubscribing)! We look forward to coming back and to all your feedback.

The Game Informer Show Returns Tomorrow

2 min Transcript
View
Alongside the rest of the magazine and website, The Game Informer Show podcast took an unexpected hiatus last year. We've been hard at work getting our feet back under us, making lots of behind-the-scenes efforts on the website, and working toward bringing back the physical magazine. It's kept us busy!

But ahead of the magazine officially returning, Summer Game Fest activities, and the launch of Switch 2, we wanted to make sure we had an outlet to share our conversations and have you listen in. Alex Van Aken, Marcus Stewart, Charles Harte, and I have the first episode in the can where we talk about the shutdown and how it affected us, what we've been playing, and lots more.

That episode isn't available quite yet, but we wanted to make sure you know where to subscribe to the show when the first episode drops on Friday, June 6.

You can find some direct links below or watch a video version of the podcast on our YouTube channel. You can also search for The Game Informer Show wherever you listen to podcasts.
We're looking forward to your feedback!
