How This Doctor Reversed Her Multiple Sclerosis With Food And Lifestyle | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens

In 2000, Dr. Terry Wahls was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. By 2003, she had to start using a wheelchair because of the progression of this disease. Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.

Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. To do this, she adopted the nutrient-rich Paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation. She went from almost being bedridden to completing an 18-mile bicycle tour.

Dr. Hyman sat down with Dr. Wahls to discuss the types of plant foods, proteins, and fats that Dr. Wahls incorporates into her daily diet as well as the supplements she recommends. They also explore the lifestyle changes that she made including meditation, stress reduction, movement, and much more.

Dr. Terry Wahls is a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa. She is the author of The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine and the cookbook The Wahls Protocol Cooking for Life: The Revolutionary Modern Paleo Plan to Treat All Chronic Autoimmune Conditions.

The Future Of Medicine: Precision And Personalization | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, BiOptimizers, and HigherDOSE

It’s an exciting time to be in medicine, as we watch technological advances completely change the way we understand the body. There are revolutions happening on multiple levels: the “omics” revolution that looks at the interactions of the genome, microbiome, metabolome, transcriptome, and more; the digitization of data that involves tracking our biology through things like the Oura ring or a continuous glucose monitor; and the systems biology medicine movement that is reframing the way we look at preventing disease and healing the body at the root. I was excited to sit down with Dr. Daniel Kraft to talk about a different vision that will integrate this type of information into the future of healthcare.

Dr. Kraft is a Stanford and Harvard-trained physician-scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur. He is currently serving as the Chair of the XPRIZE Pandemic Alliance Task Force. With over 30 years of experience in clinical practice, biomedical research, and healthcare innovation, Dr. Kraft has chaired the Medicine for Singularity University, and is founder and chair of Exponential Medicine, a program that explores convergent, rapidly developing technologies and their potential in biomedicine and healthcare. Underweight, Overtired, And Malnourished: How To Get Your Health Back On Track | This episode is sponsored by Tushy and Cozy Earth

The sad reality is that Americans suffer from massive nutritional deficiencies and our food is primarily to blame. These nutrient deficiencies are showing up in underweight and overweight people alike. Aside from a reduction in nutrient density in our food, we don’t eat enough whole, unprocessed foods and instead have diets rich in refined sugars and starches. And even when we are eating the right foods, our bodies sometimes have trouble digesting and absorbing the necessary nutrients from those foods. Simply put, low nutritional status equals a poorly functioning metabolism.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the issue of malnutrition and what that means for our overall health. They dive into how they diagnose and treat the most prevalent nutrient and vitamin deficiencies and Dr. Boham shares cases of patients she has treated who have difficulty putting on and maintaining weight.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. She witnesses the power of nutrition every day in her practice and is committed to training other physicians to utilize nutrition in healing. Dr. Boham has contributed to many articles and wrote the latest chapter on Obesity for the Rankel Textbook of Family Medicine. She is part of the faculty of the Institute for Functional Medicine and has been featured on the Dr. Oz show and in a variety of publications and media including Huffington Post, The Chalkboard Magazine, and Experience Life. Her DVD Breast Wellness: Tools to Prevent and Heal from Breast Cancer explores the Functional Medicine approach to keeping your breasts and whole body well.

  • How malnutrition can occur in overweight and underweight individuals

  • Symptoms and long-term effects of malnutrition

  • How our modern food has created mass nutritional deficiencies

  • The recommended amount of various nutrients and vitamins is not necessarily the optimal amount

  • Diagnosing and treating the most common vitamin and nutritional deficiencies including, Omega-3s, magnesium, and vitamin D

  • When malnutrition and nutritional deficiencies make it difficult to gain and keep weight on

How To Start A Meditation Practice And Create Healthy Habits | This episode is brought to you by Thrive Market

Meditation is now commonly accepted for its range of benefits, yet many of us still struggle with making it a regular practice in our daily lives. And this doesn’t just happen with meditation. Whether it be adopting healthier eating habits, spending more time in nature, or improving our sleep hygiene, the understanding that these things are good for us is rarely enough to change our behavior. The good news is having trouble changing habits is not about a lack of willpower or discipline.

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman talks with Dan Harris about his own journey into meditation and how just one minute a day may be enough to get you on the path towards all of meditation’s benefits. He also speaks with BJ Fogg about using the science of behavior to create new and lasting habits.

Dan Harris is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and the co-anchor of ABC's Nightline and the weekend edition of Good Morning America. He is the author of two New York Times best-sellers, 10% Happier and Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics: A 10% Happier How-to Book.

Dr. BJ Fogg is a behavior scientist with deep experience in innovation and teaching. For the past 20 years at Stanford University, he has directed a research lab and he also teaches his models and methods in graduate seminars. BJ has personally coached over 40,000 people in forming new habits, using his breakthrough method called “Tiny Habits.” His New York Times bestselling book, Tiny Habits: The Small Changes that Change Everything, was published in early 2020 and is contracted to be published in over 25 languages.

Understanding How The Microbiome Affects Every Aspect Of Your Health | This episode is brought to you by Joovv, ButcherBox, and TrueDark

There’s a foundational piece of Functional Medicine that I find surprises many conventional health practitioners: it’s that the health of our gut impacts every other part of the body—even the brain. There are several reasons for this. When working correctly, our gut digests our food and absorbs nutrients so we can have energy and vitality. It eliminates toxins and fights pathogens. It’s also the home of trillions of microorganisms that aid in these processes and do so much more, like manage inflammation and produce neurotransmitters.

I was excited to talk to Dr. Emeran Mayer on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy, all about nurturing the microbiome to support whole-body health and fight the epidemic of chronic disease. Dr. Emeran Mayer is the author of the recently released book The Gut-Immune Connection as well as The Mind-Gut Connection. He has studied brain-body interactions for the last forty years and is the executive director of the G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience, and the founding director of the UCLA Brain Gut Microbiome Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. His research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health for the past twenty-five years, and he is considered a pioneer and world leader in the area of brain-gut microbiome interactions and its clinical implications.

Is Lactose Intolerance Causing Your Gut Issues? | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea and Paleovalley

Most of us grew up hearing that dairy, and especially milk, is crucial for good health. In reality, dairy isn’t the vital source of calcium and strong bones that we were led to believe. Dairy can cause digestive problems for the majority of people with lactose intolerance, along with a range of other symptoms in people with and without lactose intolerance. These symptoms can include sinus issues, skin issues, headaches, autoimmune issues, and more. So how do you know if the lactose in dairy, or dairy overall, is a problem for you?

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss lactose intolerance and the myriad of ways dairy can cause digestive problems, and more. They also share how they work with patients to determine how dairy is being tolerated, and if it is the cause of other underlying health issues.

• What is lactose intolerance, exactly?!

  • The symptoms of lactose intolerance and how long it takes for them to appear after eating dairy

  • Are some forms of dairy better than others?

  • Non-dairy food sources of calcium

  • Why everyone should experiment with a dairy-free diet for a period of time

Why All Meat Is Not Created Equal | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker

There is a lot of controversy around whether meat is good or bad for our health but what if this is the wrong question to be asking? For example, grass-fed beef is extremely different from conventionally raised beef, and people buying grass-fed beef often have many other healthy habits that those buying Big Macs may not. Yet, nutrition research doesn’t take many of these variables into account. This is why when it comes to eating meat, like with all other foods, focusing on quality more than quantity is key to creating good health.

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman talks with Chris Kresser about how the type of meat being eaten is an important focus missing from many big dietary studies and they break down the myths and stigmas around red meat consumption. Dr. Hyman also speaks with Fred Provenza about how the way we eat meat, along with what the animal eats, can make such a difference when it comes to our health.

Chris Kresser is the CEO of Kresser Institute for Functional & Evolutionary Medicine, the co-director of the California Center for Functional Medicine, the creator of ChrisKresser.com, and the New York Times best-selling author of The Paleo Cure. He is known for his in-depth research uncovering myths and misconceptions in modern medicine and providing natural health solutions with proven results. Chris was named one of the 100 most influential people in health and fitness by Greatist.com, and his blog is one of the top-ranked natural health websites in the world. He recently launched Kresser Institute, an organization dedicated to reinventing healthcare and reversing chronic disease by training healthcare practitioners in functional and evolutionary medicine. Chris lives in Berkeley, California, with his wife and daughter.

Fred grew up in Salida, Colorado, working on a ranch and attending school in Wildlife Biology at Colorado State University. He is professor emeritus of Behavioral Ecology in the Department of Wildland Resources at Utah State University where he worked for 35 years, directing an award-winning research group that pioneered an understanding of how learning influences foraging behavior and how behavior links soil, plants, herbivores, and humans. He is the author of three books, including Nourishment: What Animals Can Teach Us About

Rediscovering Our Nutritional Wisdom; Foraging Behavior: Managing to Survive in a World of Change; and The Art & Science of Shepherding: Tapping the Wisdom of French Herders (co-authored with Michel Meuret). He has also published over 300 research papers in a wide variety of scientific journals.

Why Modern Food Is Nutrient Depleted And How to Fix It | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Athletic Greens, and Tushy

It might be easy to assume that if you’re eating a whole foods diet rich in plants, you’re getting lots of nutrients. Compared to a processed diet, that’s true, but you might not be getting all the nutrition you’d expect from one carrot to the next. Wouldn’t it be cool if we could measure the nutrient density in our food, to pick the most optimal bunch of spinach or package of berries at the market? Thanks to the convergence of technology and nutrition science, we can.

I was fascinated to talk to Dan Kittredge about intentionally eating for nutrient density on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dan Kittredge has been an organic farmer for more than 30 years and is the founder and executive director of the Bionutrient Food Association, a non-profit whose mission is to “increase quality in the food supply.” Known as one of the leading proponents of “nutrient density,” Dan works to demonstrate the connections between soil health, plant health, and human health. Out of these efforts was born the Real Food Campaign which has engineered a prototype of a hand-held consumer spectrometer designed to test nutrient density at point of purchase. Via the Bionutrient Meter, the goal is to empower consumers to choose for nutrient quality and thereby leverage economic incentives to drive full system regeneration.

House Call Highlight: Wired and Tired: Fixing Adrenal Burnout | ButcherBox and Paleovalley

You have likely heard the term “adrenal fatigue.” We commonly associate this term with the feelings of extreme fatigue, hormonal dysregulation, and other physical symptoms that can occur from chronic stress. More accurately, we can look to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis for the cause of these discomforts. If you have chronic stress, your adrenals get beat up, and your energy plummets and it becomes difficult to manage your life. You could feel tired and wired, all at the same time. All these are clues that you could have an imbalance of your HPA axis.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the signs of HPA axis dysfunction and how to support your HPA axis to reverse burnout. They also share patient cases that they have treated.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness. • Cortisol level testing

  • The connection between your circadian rhythm and adrenal health

Creating Health Outside Of The Doctor’s Office | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker

Even before the coronavirus pandemic, we were facing a loneliness crisis in America. And we know that loneliness is correlated with a range of negative health outcomes. While this information can feel a bit depressing and overwhelming, it also offers insight into how we can make essential shifts towards a healthier and happier society. Community-based healthcare offers amazing potential for creating long-lasting improvements to individual health and has the ability to revolutionize healthcare.

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Dr. Vivek Murthy about how loneliness is affecting us. He also speaks with Tawny Jones about why community-supported healthcare is so successful; they dive into the amazing benefits that a group approach can have when it comes to reversing disease.

Dr. Vivek Murthy is the current Surgeon General of the United States and also served as the 19th Surgeon General between 2014-2017. As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, he commanded a uniformed service of 6,600 public health officers globally. During his tenure, Dr. Murthy launched the TurnTheTide campaign, catalyzing a movement among health professionals to address the nation’s opioid crisis. He also issued the first Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health, calling for expanded access to prevention and treatment and for recognizing addiction as a chronic illness, not a character flaw.

In 2017, Dr. Murthy focused his attention on chronic stress and loneliness as prevalent problems that have profound implications for health, productivity, and happiness. His book Together: The Healing Power of Human Connection in a Sometimes Lonely World was published in April 2020.

Tawny Jones is an accomplished Administrator at the Cleveland Clinic. For over 20 years, she has served as a well-respected leader, managing patient concentric care initiatives, creating value, and delivering results in quality improvement, efficient resource management, and health system optimization for various clinical departments.

Currently, Tawny leads clinical operations at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine where the goal is to establish the efficacy of functional medicine, demonstrate its cost-effectiveness, and its ability to improve health.  Her passion for the promotion of preventative health services and community-based interventions gave impetus to the development of several clinical programs. The Functioning for LifeTMshared medical program for chronic disease management is her brainchild and has proven to be a successful model for addressing lifestyle and behavior change. Tawny is also on the African Employee Resource Group Steering Committee and is committed to helping minorities achieve their career goals.

What Our Kids Don’t Learn In School Is The Key To Their Success And Happiness | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, BiOptimizers, and Tushy

Throughout school, we learn arithmetic, biology, and how to read and write. But we don’t learn how to manage stress, understand our emotions, or connect the feelings in our bodies with the thoughts in our heads. Most of us don’t even really know how to breathe in a way that truly serves us. What if our children could learn these essential life skills early on? That’s the question Goldie Hawn asked herself after meeting kids all over the world and seeing their need for self-regulation. Today, I’m so excited to sit down with her to talk about the program she created and how it’s helped so many children grow into successful, grounded, emotionally intelligent adults.

Goldie Hawn is an Academy Award-winning actress, producer, director, best-selling author, and true children’s advocate. She is the Founder of The Goldie Hawn Foundation, a public charity with a mission to equip children with the social and emotional skills they need to lead smarter, healthier, happier, and ultimately more productive lives. Alarmed by increases in school violence, youth depression and suicide, and the persistent failure of the education system to help children cope with increasingly stressful lives, Goldie started The Goldie Hawn Foundation in 2003, applying cutting edge scientific research to create educational programs that support the social and emotional development of children. Working with leading neuroscientists, educators, psychologists, and researchers, the Foundation developed MindUP™ an evidence-based curriculum and teaching model for grades K-12 that provide tools to help children self-regulate and understand their own emotions, reduce stress and anxiety, sharpen concentration, increase empathy, and improve academic performance.

Is Brain Inflammation The Cause of Depression, Dementia, ADD, And Autism? A Functional Medicine Approach To Neuroinflammation | This episode is sponsored by Thrive Market and Athletic Greens

The emphasis on naming diseases is pervasive throughout medicine, and it is a primary obstacle to changing the way we do things and finding answers to our health problems. For instance, two brain disorders with two completely different names might have a lot more in common than you may otherwise think. The brain has an incredible connection to the immune system, called the glymphatic system, which helps it detoxify, receive valuable nutrients, and more. When the glymphatic system is threatened, neuroinflammation is created.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about inflammation in the brain. They discuss the many factors that can drive neuroinflammation, the range of conditions that are linked to brain inflammation, and how they work with patients to cool this inflammation.

Dr. LePine graduated from Dartmouth Medical School and is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, specializing in Integrative Functional Medicine. He is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center, he worked as a physician at Canyon Ranch in Lenox, MA, for 10 years. Dr. LePine’s focus at The UltraWellness Center is to help his patients achieve optimal health and vitality by restoring the natural balance to both the mind and the body. His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. Dr. LePine teaches around the world, and has given lectures to doctors and patients at American College for Advancement in Medicine (ACAM), Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), the University of Miami Integrative Medicine Conference, The Kripalu Center in Lenox, MA, and is on the faculty for American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M). Dr. LePine is the head of the Scientific Advisory Board for Designs for Health and a consultant for Diagnostic Solutions Laboratory. He enjoys skiing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and golfing in the beautiful Berkshires, and is a fitness enthusiast.

Why Fasting And The Ketogenic Diet Can Help With Cancer Treatment and Prevention | This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker

The right diet is so imperative in preventing cancer or during the healing process. This is in large part because of the role insulin plays in cancer; insulin acts as a growth factor in the body, which is one of the reasons too much insulin leads to obesity. It’s also why insulin will support the growth of cancer cells. Recent research is now revealing some fascinating results of using fasting and/or the keto diet to dramatically decrease insulin.

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks to Dr. Jason Fung about how fasting has been found as a useful adjunct to chemotherapy, as it helps to put cells into a quiet repair mode which lessens the really uncomfortable symptoms of chemo most people experience. He also speaks with Dr. Patrick Hanaway about his experience in managing stage IV cancer, using the ketogenic diet, fasting, radiation, chemotherapy, and his spiritual practices for maximum benefit.

Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking science-based books about diabetes and obesity, The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. Dr. Fung is also the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with fasting. His latest book, The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery, was just released.

Dr. Patrick Hanaway is a board-certified family physician trained at Washington University. After 10 years as Chief Medical Officer at Genova Diagnostics, Dr. Hanaway became the Chief Medical Education Officer for the Institute for Functional Medicine. In 2014, Dr. Hanaway was the founding Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine. His research focus is on nutrition, the microbiome, and evaluating value in Functional Medicine models of care. Currently, his teaching focus is on cancer, COVID, and uncertainty.

Dr. Hanaway was initiated in 2009 as a Mara’akame (Indigenous healer) by the Huichol people of the Sierra Madres in Mexico. He holds community fires, leads ceremonies, and offers traditional healing sessions. This part of his practice provides some much-welcome spiritual and emotional insight into addressing our imbalances as a nation.

Long-Haul COVID And The Mysteries Of Coronavirus: A Path To Healing | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, BiOptimizers, and TrueDark

The symptoms of COVID-19 are scary enough. What I personally find even more terrifying, is the long-haulers syndrome so many people struggle with months after “recovering” from acute COVID. In many people, lingering symptoms are occurring 6 to 9 months after COVID infection, hence the term long-haulers syndrome. It comes with a slew of symptoms, from fatigue and body aches to difficulty breathing, racing heart, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and more. COVID-19 was originally viewed as a respiratory disease but we’ve now gained a new understanding of its impact on our blood vessels and how that affects the entire body.

There’s no better person to dig into the vascular nature of COVID with than today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy, Dr. William Li. Dr. William Li is an internationally renowned physician, scientist and author of one of my favorite books, the New York Times bestseller Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. His groundbreaking work has led to the development of more than 30 new medical treatments and impacted care for more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. Dr. Li has appeared on Good Morning America, CNN, CNBC, Live with Kelly & Ryan and the Dr. Oz Show, and he has been featured in USA Today, Time Magazine, The Atlantic, Parade and O Magazine. He is president and medical director of the Angiogenesis Foundation and is leading research into COVID-19.

Why Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) Rarely Occurs On Its Own | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens

More than 500 different species of microbes live in our gut and our gut bacteria regulate many of our bodily functions, from creating vitamins to controlling our immune system, metabolism, brain function, and more. Simply put, they are critical to our long-term health. Imbalances in the gut ecosystem often trigger or exacerbate small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), along with many other issues.

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papanicolaou to explain what SIBO is, how they diagnose and treat it in their patients, and why it is almost always paired with a number of other health issues. Dr. Hyman also shares his personal experience battling SIBO along with mercury poisoning.

George Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. He is also an Institute for Functional Medicine Practitioner. Upon graduation from his residency he joined the Indian Health Service. He worked on the Navajo reservation for 4 years at the Chinle Comprehensive Medical Facility where he served as the Outpatient Department Coordinator. In 2000, he founded Cornerstone Family Practice in Rowley, MA. He practiced with a philosophy centered on personal relationships and treating the whole person, not just not the disease. He called that philosophy, “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

Every second, there are 37 billion billion reactions (you read that right) happening inside our bodies. Each one needs enzymes to occur, and enzymes need nutrients like minerals to do their part of the job. Big picture, that means minerals have an enormous impact on our health. Even small amounts of insufficiency can lead to big problems. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy, I’m excited to connect with Dr. James DiNicolantonio to look at the increasing issue of mineral deficiencies, how we got here, and what we can do to consciously consume more minerals.

Dr. DiNicolantonio is a Doctor of Pharmacy and a cardiovascular research scientist. A well-respected and internationally known scientist and an expert on health and nutrition, he

How Addictive Foods Are Driving Fatty Liver Disease | This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (or fatty liver, for short) affects 90 million Americans and is a major cause of chronic disease and inflammation in the body. This inflammation creates insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, which causes your body to deposit fat not just in your liver but also all around your organs and in your belly. So what is driving fatty liver and the whole cascade of issues it causes? And how do you fix it?

In this mini-episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Shawn Stevenson and Dr. Shebani Sethi Dalai about the various mechanisms that are at work when our bodies process food. They also discuss how non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is on the rise in our country due to the overconsumption of sugar, starch, and ultra-processed food.

Shawn Stevenson is the author of the international bestselling book Sleep Smarter and creator of The Model Health Show, featured as the number #1 health podcast in the U.S. with millions of listener downloads each year. A graduate of the University of Missouri–St. Louis, Shawn studied business, biology, and nutritional science, and went on to found Advanced Integrative Health Alliance, a company that provides wellness services for individuals and organizations worldwide. Shawn has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, The New York Times, Muscle & Fitness, ESPN, and many other major media outlets. He is also an in-demand keynote speaker for numerous organizations, universities, and conferences.

Dr. Shebani Sethi Dalai is a double board-certified physician in Obesity Medicine and Psychiatry. She is the Founding Director of Stanford University's Metabolic Psychiatry program and Silicon Valley Metabolic Psychiatry, a new center in the San Francisco Bay Area focused on optimizing brain health by integrating low-carb nutrition, comprehensive psychiatric care, and treatment of obesity with associated metabolic disease. She is clinical faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine, where she leads a number of clinical trials investigating the important relationship between nutrition, metabolic dysfunction, inflammation, and mental health. She is the author of multiple peer-reviewed publications, a recipient of numerous professional awards from organizations including the American Psychiatric Association, the Association of Women Psychiatrists, and the Obesity Treatment Foundation, and a widely featured speaker and thought leader. The Link Between Autoimmune Disease, Chronic Fatigue, And Hidden Infections | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark, Essentia, and Tushy

Pandemic aside, we’re seeing a national immune crisis. Autoimmune conditions continue to rise to record numbers, not to mention all of the chronic mystery illnesses that so many people struggle with daily. I’ve experienced this firsthand, along with the corresponding frustration and fear. There is an intriguing hypothesis about these conditions that I get into with my guests, Dana Parish and Dr. Steven Phillips, today on The Doctor’s Farmacy: underlying infections. Sneaky tick-borne diseases like Lyme, parasitic infections, and certain viruses can be extremely hard to diagnose. Meanwhile, they can contribute to an immune system collapse and other life-threatening breakdowns throughout the entire body.

Dr. Phillips and Dana Parish share their incredible stories of overcoming chronic stealth infections after numerous doctors couldn’t help them. Lyme was a common factor for both of them, while Dr. Phillips was also able to diagnose Bartonella in Dana. At their worst, they both had extremely limited mobility and felt their lives were at risk. Dana shares that in addition to recovering her mobility and strength, treating these infections also had a profound impact on her mental health by reducing her anxiety and depression. Dr. Phillips’ journey not only forced him to be his own detective to find healing, but also showed him how much discordance there is among conventional medicine in treating diseases like Lyme.

Do You Have Excess Belly Fat? Why It’s A Problem And What You Can Do About It | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea and Thrive Market

You might be surprised to learn that not all body fat is created equal; where the fat is on your body makes a big difference when it comes to your overall health. The fat inside your belly is called “VAT” or visceral adipose tissue and this type of fat is particularly dangerous. When you begin to put on weight, especially this lethal belly fat, your biology shifts out of balance, veering into the unstable and unhealthy territory of disease—which in turn often leads to more weight gain.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to explain how belly fat contributes to other health issues. They also discuss the numerous factors that contribute to belly fat, including but not limited to diet, and how they work with patients to eliminate excess visceral fat.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices Functional Medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. Through her practice and lecturing, she has helped thousands of people achieve their goals of optimum health and wellness.

Who Is Growing And Picking The Food You Eat And How Are They Being Treated? | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo

Most of us don’t think about food and farmworkers when we are eating or shopping for groceries, but this is actually the largest sector of workers in the United States. Unfortunately, these workers have historically been marginalized and are often unprotected and underpaid.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman offers a brief overview of why food and farmworkers were not included in the United States Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. He also talks to Kerry Kennedy about a group of farmworkers who banded together to create the Coalition of Immokalee Workers to fight for better wages and working conditions. This coalition of farmworkers found a creative solution to injustice by creating the Fair Food Program, which mandates that growers provide basic protections for their workers.

Kerry Kennedy is the president of Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights. Since 1981, she has worked on diverse human rights issues including child labor, disappearances, indigenous land rights, judicial independence, freedom of expression, ethnic violence, impunity, women's rights, and the environment. Kerry is the author of the New York Times bestsellers Being Catholic Now, Robert F. Kennedy: Ripples of Hope, and Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders Who Are Changing Our World. Kerry founded RFK Compass, which convenes biannual meetings of institutional investors who collectively control $5 to $7 trillion in assets to address the impact of human rights violations on investment outcomes. She serves on the boards of the U.S. Institute of Peace, Human Rights First, Ethics in Action, SDG USA, Sustainable Development Goals Center for Africa, Health eVillages, Kailash Satyarthi Children's Foundation, Nizami Ganjavi International Center as well as several public companies.

How Food, Agriculture, And Energy Are The Cause And Solution To Environmental Collapse | This episode is brought to you by Paleovally, ButcherBox, and Athletic Greens

The cost of our food and personal care items is much more than what we pay at checkout. The true cost is measured by the impact that thousands of chemicals have on our health, the environment and climate, our economy, and many other facets of life. Being an informed and engaged consumer is one of the most powerful ways to turn around our toxic world, and we have some incredible resources at our fingertips to do that, like the Environmental Working Group (EWG). Today, I’m excited to talk with Ken Cook from the EWG about food, conscious consumerism, and our impact on the planet.

Ken Cook is the president and co-founder of the EWG. He is widely recognized as one of the environmental community’s most prominent and influential critics of industrial agriculture and the nation’s broken approach to protecting families and children from toxic substances. Under Cook’s leadership, the EWG has pioneered the use of digital technologies to empower American families with easy-to-use, science-driven tools to help reduce their exposure to potentially harmful ingredients in food, drinking water, cosmetics, and other household products. Capitol Hill’s closely read newspaper, The Hill, regularly lists Cook in its annual roster of Washington’s top lobbyists. It has said Cook’s “influence spans the country” and called EWG “the tip of the green movement’s spear.”

Why Rhythm Is The Key to Health | This episode is sponsored by Pique Tea and TrueDark

It’s easier than ever to get out of sync with the natural rhythms of our bodies. However, keeping our internal “clock” in rhythm is a vital component of our health and well-being. If you’ve ever experienced jet lag or pulled an all-nighter, you know just how off you can feel. When your biological and circadian rhythms become unbalanced, so does your health, and you feel it.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about the importance of keeping our circadian rhythm in sync. They also discuss how they work with patients to restore the body’s natural rhythm.

His areas of interest include optimal aging, bio-detoxification, functional gastrointestinal health, systemic inflammation, autoimmune disorders and the neurobiology of mood and cognitive disorders. The Cholesterol Test You Should Be Getting | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo

Many of us have been told by our doctors that we need to lower our cholesterol levels. But what does that mean, exactly? And do standard lipid profiles really tell us the full story about what is going on with our cholesterol?

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss the importance of cholesterol particle testing. They explore why other cholesterol tests are outdated and why information about particle size and particle number is the only way to know what’s really going on with your cholesterol.

Is Alzheimer’s Reversible? Getting to the Root Causes | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and TrueDark

Alzheimer’s doesn’t just happen overnight; it’s the severe end of a spectrum, that comes after decades of changes have already been occurring in the brain. So why is it that we’ve grown accustomed to dreading this diagnosis, instead of doing what we can to proactively stop it in its tracks? For one, we’ve long been told that once the brain starts downsizing we can’t reverse the process. Now, we know that’s not the case. It’s possible to avoid brain degradation and actually even rebuild it.

Today’s guest on The Doctor’s Farmacy has been a pioneering detective for Alzheimer’s and other neurological issues. Dr. Dale Bredesen is internationally recognized as an expert in the mechanisms of neurodegenerative diseases and the author of the New York Times bestseller, The End of Alzheimer's. His latest book, The End of Alzheimer’s Program, goes into greater detail on the protocol he uses with his patients and how it can be tailored to anyone’s needs, at any age. Dale held faculty positions at UCSF, UCLA, and the University of California, San Diego, and directed the Program on Aging at the Burnham Institute before coming to the Buck Institute in 1998 as its founding president and CEO. He is currently a professor at UCLA and the Chief Science Officer at Apollo Health.

Your Lab Tests Are Normal But You Feel Sick: What Your Doctor Is Missing | This episode is sponsored by Sound and Tushy

Conventional medicine approaches illness as a name it, blame it, and tame it game. But these labels or diagnoses are just names we associate with a collection of symptoms. They have nothing to do with why you have those symptoms—with the root causes of the “disease.” Conversely, just because your standard lab panel comes back normal does not always mean you are experiencing optimum health.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Todd LePine about how Functional Medicine seeks to get to the root cause of health issues. They dive into the world of unconventional and advanced lab testing that they use to identify dysfunction in the body and optimize health.

Treating Post-COVID, Or Long-Hauler, Syndrome | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp

By now, most of us are familiar with post-COVID syndrome, also called long-haulers syndrome, in which a patient who has had COVID-19 experiences long-lasting symptoms. While medicine is still trying to fully understand the reason why a percentage of COVID-19 patients go on to also experience post-COVID syndrome, there appear to be parallels to chronic fatigue syndrome experienced from the Epstein-Barr virus. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Patrick Hanaway about using a Functional Medicine approach to treat post-COVID syndrome. He also speaks with Dr. Matt Cook about several cutting-edge therapies he is using to treat his patients with post-COVID syndrome.

Dr. Matthew Cook is a board-certified anesthesiologist who has completed a fellowship in Functional Medicine. His practice, BioReset™ Medical, provides treatments for conditions ranging from pain and complex illness to anti-aging and wellness. Who Should Eat Keto and Why? | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, Joovv, and TrueDark

Chances are, you’ve heard a lot of buzz about the ketogenic (or keto) diet. This high-fat, low-carb approach to eating has become extremely popular in recent years for helping with everything from weight loss to cognition. So is it worth the hype? Like any diet, keto is great for some people and not-so-great for others. Genetics, family history, personal health goals, and so many other factors tie into what type of diet will work for an individual. The one-size-fits-all approach to diet has led way too many people down the wrong path.

Today, I’m excited to chat with Gary Taubes all about the keto diet, it’s complexities and benefits, and who might want to consider it. Gary is an award-winning science and health journalist, and co-founder and director of the Nutrition Science Initiative. He is the author of The Case Against Sugar, Why We Get Fat, Good Calories, Bad Calories, and, most recently, The Case for Keto. Gary is a former staff writer for Discover and correspondent for Science. He has written three cover articles on nutrition and health for The New York Times Magazine, and his writing has also appeared in The Atlantic, Esquire, and numerous "best of" anthologies, including The Best of the Best American Science Writing (2010). He has received three Science in Society Journalism Awards from the National Association of Science Writers, and is also the recipient of a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award in Health Policy Research.

Treating & Preventing Shingles From A Functional Medicine Perspective | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Cozy Earth

For anyone who has experienced shingles, or been around someone who has, you know this can be an incredibly painful condition. Symptoms include rash, hives, and nerve pain. Shingles  are caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. This virus tends to hide, or almost hibernate, in nerve cells long after someone has recovered from chickenpox, and can re-emerge as shingles down the line. In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss why supporting the immune system is so critical when it comes to preventing and treating shingles, and much more.

He called that philosophy “Whole Life Wellness”. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive this kind of personal care Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health – a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. Dr. Papanicolaou joined The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Cozy Earth.

In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss:

  • The shingles-chicken pox connection

  • Symptoms associated with shingles, and why they are so painful

  • The role of the immune system in the development of shingles

  • The conventional vs. functional medicine approach to treating shingles

  • The shingles vaccine

  • Patients suffering from shingles who Dr. Papanicolaou has treated

Is Your Acne Caused By What You're Eating? | This episode is brought to you by TrueDark

The food you eat can have a major influence on the quality of your skin. Yet, conventional medicine primarily deals with acne by lathering potions and lotions on the skin or tackling it with antibiotics or topical steroids. In fact, we spend over a billion dollars on prescriptions and over-the-counter products to cure acne. But eliminating acne is best approached as an inside job.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with his colleagues at The UltraWellness Center about how what we eat can drive acne. They also discuss the biggest food culprits, as well as how to tell what foods might be causing an issue for you.

The Most Important Molecule for Health You Have Never Heard Of: Nitric Oxide | This episode is brought to you by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Beekeeper’s Naturals

What if I told you one single thing could work as an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neurotransmitter, and vasodilator and that it helps promote memory and learning, increase arousal in both men and women, protect against sun damage and skin cancer, and regulate digestive enzymes and hormones? You’d want some of that, wouldn’t you? Well, nitric oxide is capable of all of this and more. Our bodies naturally produce this molecule but, due to lifestyle factors, some of us make more than others. Luckily for us, there are many things we can do to increase our nitric oxide levels and reap the health benefits.

Today I’m honored to sit down and talk with the man who actually discovered nitric oxide, Dr. Louis Ignarro. Dr. Ignarro is a medical research scientist who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his breakthrough discovery of nitric oxide and how it positively impacts health and longevity. His groundbreaking research on nitric oxide paved the way for—among other innovations—Viagra. He is an award-winning Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Molecular & Medical Pharmacology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and has his Ph.D. in Pharmacology with over 35 years of experience teaching.

How To Tell If Mercury Toxicity Is The Cause Of Your Mysterious Symptoms | This episode is sponsored by ButcherBox and Kettle & Fire

Changes in environmental mercury levels have been dramatic in recent decades; industrial exposure to mercury is significant and mostly comes from coal-burning and chlor-alkali plants. The more mercury we are exposed to, the more we are likely we are to be toxic. The main ways that humans are exposed to mercury are from contaminated fish and dental amalgams or silver fillings. And while some of us are very good at detoxifying mercury and other toxins, some people have genetic variations (called polymorphisms) that make them more prone to metal toxicity. Mercury can affect nearly all your organs, especially the brain, heart, kidneys, and gut, and many chronic diseases may be caused or worsened by mercury, including neurologic disease, ADHD, autism, heart disease, autoimmune diseases, and more.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. Elizabeth Boham to discuss how they test for, diagnose, and treat mercury toxicity. Dr. Hyman also shares his own personal experience recovering from mercury poisoning.

Elizabeth Boham is a physician and nutritionist who practices functional medicine at The UltraWellness Center in Lenox, MA. • Dr. Hyman’s personal experience with mercury poisoning

  • Mercury’s effects on the body

  • How mercury can be passed through the placenta and breast milk

  • Main sources of mercury, including coal-burning facilities, fish consumption, mercury dental fillings

  • Safely removing mercury fillings

  • Effectively testing for mercury levels

  • Patients with mercury toxicity that they have treated

How Food, Farming, And Health Disparities Are Interconnected | This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp

Racial and ethnic disparities are sadly alive and well when it comes to health outcomes, land ownership, and how food is grown in the US. White farmers are at an overwhelming advantage when it comes to owning land and they see the greatest benefit from the 97% of the income generated by it. Additionally, lack of access to land and fresh food is a form of oppression that sets communities up for generational illness and strife. These are serious racial and ethnic inequalities happening in our current day and age, but they stem from the long-standing structural discrimination that our agricultural system is rooted in. In this minisode, Dr. Hyman explores these topics with Karen Washington and Leah Penniman.

Karen Washington is a farmer, activist, and food advocate. She is the Co-owner and Farmer at Rise & Root Farm in Chester, New York. In 2010, Karen Co-Founded Black Urban Growers (BUGS), an organization supporting growers in both urban and rural settings. In 2012, Ebony magazine voted her one of the 100 most influential African Americans in the country, and in 2014 Karen was the recipient of the James Beard Leadership Award. Karen serves on the boards of the New York Botanical Gardens, SoulFire Farm, the Mary Mitchell Center, Why Hunger, and Farm School NYC.

Karen shares her inspiring story of how starting a garden in her backyard in The Bronx led her to understand the bigger issues of food insecurity in underserved communities. As a former physical therapist looking into her patients’ health, she noticed Black and Brown clients were suffering with poor diet and inaccessibility to healthy foods, while white communities were not.

Leah Penniman is a Black Kreyol educator, farmer, author, and food justice activist from Soul Fire Farm in Grafton, NY. She co-founded Soul Fire Farm in 2010 with the mission to end racism in the food system and reclaim our ancestral connection to land.

As Co-Executive Director, Leah is part of a team that facilitates powerful food sovereignty programs—including farmer training for Black and Brown people, a subsidized farm food distribution program for communities living under food apartheid, and domestic and international organizing toward equity in the food system. Her book, Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm's Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land is a love song for the land and her people.

From a young age, Leah had a deep reverence for nature and the land. This led her to learn about historical regenerative farming practices and share that knowledge with others. It also led her to a greater understanding of our food system and why it’s a major propellor in racial inequality. President Johnson’s 1865 overturn of General William Sherman’s “40 acres and a mule” Order had massive implications for the future of Black farmers that we are still feeling the consequences of today.

What Is Your Constipation Telling You About Your Overall Health And How To Fix It | This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth and Belcampo

Constipation is an often uncomfortable and extremely prevalent condition affecting close to 80 million people. And while constipation might be common, it is definitely not normal and it can have disastrous consequences. Having healthy digestion and eliminating waste every day (ideally twice or three times a day!) is critical to your overall health. Your liver flushes out toxins and dumps them into your intestines. However, if your digestive system isn’t working optimally, then all those toxins and waste can get reabsorbed into your body. So, it makes sense that constipation has been linked to multiple diseases, including cancer and even Parkinson’s disease, plus it actually makes you feel like crap!

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the importance of getting to the root cause of constipation. They share information on the most common drivers of constipation including diet, chronic stress, antibiotic overuse, and a wide range of many other issues.

Healing Foods That Taste Great | This episode is brought to you by Belcampo

The more we can learn about using food as medicine, the more power we have to reach our health goals. Food has the power to prevent and reverse disease; there can be so many powerful (and delicious) benefits waiting for you in each bite. There are powerful compounds in foods—like curcumin, genistein, catechins, lycopene, resveratrol, quercetin—that have medicinal impacts on the body. By keeping flavor and health benefits on the same parallel, we can feed the body, mind, and soul with each well-planned bite.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Chef David Bouley and Dr. William Li about how we can cook our way out of illness by aligning our foods to feed our health and get incredible flavor and variety all at once.

Among many accolades, Chef David Bouley earned several four-star reviews in The New York Times; seven James Beard Foundation awards for best restaurant and best chef; he was named “Best Chef in America” by Herald-Tribune; he received the TripAdvisor Traveler’s Choice Awards “The Best Restaurant in the United States” and #14 in the world; a 29 out of 30 rating in Zagat, and ranked #1 in New York City for many years. Chef Bouley is known as one of the most health-conscious chefs in the world, with a strong focus for diners with health concerns. He is currently contracted for a new book, Living Pantry, that will provide the building blocks for home cooking to deliver great taste and health benefits with easy execution.

William Li, MD, is a world-renowned physician, scientist, speaker, and author of Eat to Beat Disease: The New Science of How Your Body Can Heal Itself. He is best known for leading the Angiogenesis Foundation. His groundbreaking work has impacted more than 70 diseases including cancer, diabetes, blindness, heart disease, and obesity. His TED Talk, “Can We Eat to Starve Cancer?” has garnered more than 11 million views. An author of over 100 scientific publications in leading journals such as Science, the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, and more, Dr. Li has served on the faculties of Harvard, Tufts, and Dartmouth Medical School.

Can Regenerative Agriculture Reverse Climate Change And Chronic Disease? | This episode is sponsored by BiOptimizers, Thrive Market, and Cozy Earth

When we look at rapidly declining soil health, rising rates of depression and suicide in farmers, and our climate crisis, it can be easy to wonder how we got here. The answer is multifaceted, but a common theme of industrialized agriculture runs throughout. Today on The Doctor’s Farmacy I talk to Allen Williams about how we have strayed from beneficial regenerative farming practices to adopt destructive ones, and how to find our way back.

Allen is a founding partner of Understanding Ag, LLC and the Soil Health Academy, and is a partner in Joyce Farms, Inc. He has consulted with more than 4,000 farmers and ranchers in the US and other countries, on operations ranging from a few acres to over 1 million acres. Allen and his partners pioneered many of the early regenerative agriculture principles and practices and now teach those to farmers globally. He is a “recovering academic,” having served 15 years on the faculty at Louisiana Tech University and Mississippi State University teaching genetics and physiology. Allen has been featured in the Carbon Nation film series, Soil Carbon Cowboys, on the Dr. Oz show, ABC Food Forecast News, and in Kiss The Ground, A Regenerative Secret, The Farmer’s Footprint film series, and the Sacred Cow film series.

How Eliminating Gluten May Improve Anxiety & Depression | This episode is brought to you by Kettle & Fire

When it comes to diet and health, we most often think about physical health. But what we eat affects more than our bodies; it also affects our brains. And recent studies have shown that diet can have a profound impact on mental health conditions ranging from ADHD to depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, OCD, dementia, and beyond.

In this minisode, Dr. Hyman speaks with Dr. Uma Naido about how one of the most common food offenders she sees with her patients is gluten. They discuss the correlation between anxiety and consuming gluten, even in those without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity. He also speaks with Maggie Ward to discuss why gluten sensitivity and intolerance have been on the rise in recent decades, and how to determine if it is a problem for you.

Michelin-starred chef David Bouley described Dr. Uma Naidoo as the world’s first “triple threat” in the food as medicine space. She is a Harvard trained psychiatrist, Professional Chef and Nutrition Specialist. Her niche work is in Nutritional Psychiatry and she is regarded both nationally and internationally as a medical pioneer in this more newly recognized field.

In her role as a Clinical Scientist, Dr. Naidoo founded and directs the first hospital-based clinical service in Nutritional Psychiatry in the US. She is the Director of Nutritional and Lifestyle Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Director of Nutritional Psychiatry at the Massachusetts General Hospital Academy while serving on the faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Naidoo is the author of, This is Your Brain on Food, released August 4, 2020. In her book, she shows the cutting-edge science explaining the ways in which food contributes to our mental health and how a sound diet can help treat and prevent a wide range of psychological and cognitive health issues, from ADHD to anxiety, depression, OCD, and others.

Maggie Ward, MS, RD, LDN, is the Nutrition Director at The UltraWellness Center. Maggie holds a master’s degree in Nutrition from Bastyr University which focuses on using whole foods for holistic Nutrition Therapy. In addition, she completed her requirements to become a registered dietitian at Westchester Medical Center in NY. Prior to joining The UltraWellness Center team in 2008, Maggie worked at The Brooklyn Hospital Center in New York providing nutrition counseling to children and families dealing with HIV. She also taught at the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan and other sites throughout New York City, teaching nutritionally focused cooking classes for children and adults. Much of her focus is on food allergies, digestive disorders, inflammatory conditions, Pediatrics and Sports Nutrition. Maggie has been counseling individuals, families, and business groups on therapeutic diets to address various health concerns for more than 15 years. Her ongoing clinical training through the Institute for Functional Medicine uses a systems biology approach when working with those who suffer from chronic and acute conditions to help them find their path to healing. She has a passion for cooking and reconnecting people with their potential to heal using whole, organic and local foods.

Sick And Tired Of Being Sick And Tired? How To Reclaim Your Energy | This episode is brought to you by Paleovalley, ButcherBox, and Four Sigmatic

We have an energy crisis on our hands. I’m not talking about fossil fuels, I’m talking about a breakdown of the body’s internal energy systems that now affects even young adults in their prime. It might surprise you to learn that it’s not normal to feel tired all the time. Our on-the-go culture has made it the norm. But when we take a look at how the body’s mitochondria function (these are our tiny but powerful cellular energy factories) we see that so much of our modern lives is damaging our mitochondria and resulting in this energy deficit.

I’m so excited to talk to Dr. Steven Gundry about this topic on this episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy. Dr. Steven Gundry is one of the world’s top cardiothoracic surgeons and a pioneer in nutrition, as well as medical director at The International Heart and Lung Institute Center for Restorative Medicine. He has spent the last two decades studying the microbiome and now helps patients use diet and nutrition as a key form of treatment. He is author of many New York Times bestselling books including The Plant Paradox, and The Plant Paradox Cookbook, and The Longevity Paradox: How to Die Young at a Ripe Old Age, and just released The Energy Paradox: What to Do When Your Get-Up-and-Go Has Got Up and Gone. He also is the founder of GundryMD, a line of wellness products and supplements, and host of The Dr. Gundry Podcast.

The Functional Medicine Approach To Hypothyroidism And Hashimoto’s Disease | This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa Health

While thyroid disease can occur in various forms, one of the most common is called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease where the body attacks the thyroid gland and diminishes its ability to create precious hormones—ones that impact every cell of the body. Hashimoto’s is the leading cause of hypothyroidism (an underactive thyroid) in the US, with women at much higher risk, being 7 to 8 times more likely than men to get it. Because of its autoimmune component, people with Hashimoto’s are actually at a higher risk of developing other autoimmune diseases as well. The good news is that the right diet and lifestyle choices can work wonders when it comes to treating and healing the thyroid.

In this episode, Dr. Hyman sits down with Dr. George Papaicolaou to discuss the Functional Medicine approach to diagnosing and treating hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease. They also delve into common triggers of Hashimoto’s disease, and much more.

Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center in 2017.

This episode is sponsored by Athletic Greens and Rupa Health.

In this conversation, Dr. Hyman and Dr. Papanicolaou discuss:

  • Autoimmune disease triggers, including gluten, heavy metals, stress, and more

  • The relationship between pregnancy and Hashimoto’s/thyroid dysfunction

  • Thyroid boosting and damaging foods

  • Thyroid testing

  • Symptoms of low thyroid function
