Old Fashioned On Purpose

en us
Have you felt it? Something is rippling through humanity at this moment. It's a stirring... a longing... a remembering. A sense that we are more capable than we’ve been led to believe. We want to feel alive, not sedated.. but we've lost our way. We've traded a life intertwined with nature for asphalt and artificial lights. We've swapped natural movement for a sedentary existence. We've given up food from the earth in favor of food from the factory. We've sacrificed our traditional skillsets for apps and gadgets. But while our overdose on modernity may have made us sick, there is an antidote. Join best-selling author and mentor, Jill Winger, each week as she digs into a different facet of the old-fashioned on purpose lifestyle.

I'm thrilled to be talking with Michael Easter today, an award-winning journalist, contributing editor at Men’s Health magazine, and author of The Comfort Crisis.

Michael breaks down how our world has gotten more and more "comfortable" since the Industrial Revolution, why this isn't necessarily a good thing, and why more folks today need to do what homesteaders, as a natural inclination, tend to do... challenge themselves and lean into "hard."

Where to find Michael (and his 5-day challenge!): eastermichael.com

When it comes to how to motivate kids, our society gets a lot wrong.

If you ever find yourself seconding guess your parenting choices that don't always look like the rest of society's parenting choices, definitely listen in to my talk with Jessica Lahey today.

If, on another note, you've had a rough gardening season, or just want to improve your garden soil, check out this episode's sponsor, Redmond's Agriculture, & my favorite soil kit option on the market, right here: theprairiehomestead.com/soiltest. Be sure to use code HOMESTEAD & save 15% off your entire order!

In today's episode, Jessica explains why extrinsic motivators (aka a parent begging, punishing, or bribing) don't boost a child's intrinsic motivation. And we dive into detail about all the better options.

Jessica is the author of The Gift of Failure (https://bit.ly/3QF1MEN) and The Addiction Inoculation (https://bit.ly/3K93tIm).

Your Turn by Julie Lythcott-Haims: https://bookshop.org/a/5789/9781250137777

Join in on my conversation with the author of Radical Homemakers and Redefining Rich as she breaks down the meaning of "homemaker" in ways you've never thought of.

In today's episode, Shannon and I talk about how a true homemaker learns skills so she is free to live by the principles that are most important to her, all the while working through the important steps of renouncing, reclaiming, and rebuilding, and figuring out what these steps look like for her.

Shannon and I talk about what it looks like to grapple with the macro issues and the micro issues, and in all that chaotic imperfection, to find happiness and redefine "wealth."

Rory Feek joins me today to talk about why we think our current generation is the most depressed one that's ever lived and how we can slowly go about opting out of the systems, even without a detailed plan. We talk about how we can, one step at a time, become more autonomous and independent, while simultaneously investing more in the community.

Want to know more about the sustainable, reusable canning lids I mentioned in this episode, and stop worrying about unforeseen shortages that could happen again this summer? Here's the training video I promised: https://youtu.be/rFBwPVN-Ye4

Today we have a fascinating guest, Lenore Skenazy, the author of the book Free-Range Kids and the founder of a nonprofit that is making it easy, normal, and legal to give kids independence.

We're diving into an intriguing topic of free-range kids and the impact it has on them when adults mitigate all risks. We'll talk about how as a society we got where we are, with parents afraid to let their kids play in the front yard or walk to the corner. And we'll outline practical steps parents can take to give kids a free-range lifestyle--outside and off of electronics--no matter where they live, from a rural homestead to a bustling city.

Welcome to our TENTH season guys! Today we're talking about what it looks like when the honeymoon period of homesteading phases out and kinda slides over onto the back burner. And I'm explaining how and why this season on the podcast is going to be something all new & why I think you're gonna love it.

Then we dive into this kinda crazy new, old-school thing I'm doing that's breaking all the rules. (Let me know what you think!)

In this episode we're chatting about what it feels like to allow ourselves to be fully seen, to be vulnerable and raw. And we're talking about life in small-town America... how moving to a place that needs you and your skills and your talents might be a great option for you.

Let's break down the reasons you might wanna consider some of the off-the-beaten-path towns that don't check all the boxes but just might be a perfect backdrop for starting your own unconventional homestead. Because I think it's time to bring revival to small-town America, and maybe you and I are the ones who need to be taking action.

Today I’m talking with Allison Askew of Arrow J Beef Co., a first-generation rancher with a lot of irons in a lot of fires. She’s sharing her inspiring story of unconventional homesteading to encourage everyone who doesn’t feel like they fit in any one particular box. S9 E6: Can You Grow Apples in the Arctic?

38 min
View

Today I'm talking with Bob Osborne, columnist on CBC radio,  a Canadian farmer with more than 40 years of experience with all things apples, and the author of a brand new book, Hardy Apples.

Bob and I chat about how to grow healthy apples (even in cold climates), talk about the Renaissance of apples, and discuss why there are thousands of different apples out there but only the standard five options available in the grocery store.

And we may wind up gushing a little over all things apple crisp and apple cider.

Find Bob's book here: Hardy Apples (https://bookshop.org/a/5789/9780228103189)

Join in as I chat with this husband and wife team, Chad & Tara Philipp, of She's Rooted Home, about how they managed to build a homestead in the Southern California Mohave desert. Surrounded by tumbleweeds, with Juniper berry bushes as the only occasional “greenery," they've built a thriving homestead.

They share with me how they overcame the numerous obstacles of life in such a dry, arid climate, explaining that success is really all about changing your perspective and living the life you want, right where you are.

S8 E11 - Season Wrap Up

21 min
View

It's calving season, I'm deep into writing book #2 (this one isn't a cookbook), and I thought it was time to catch you up on some things.

In this episode we'll talk about what's going on with me and social media lately, why I've been craving deep dives into meaty topics, what I'm reading currently, and (drum roll please!) the exciting theme of next season here on the podcast. I think you're gonna love this!

Join me as I sit down with one of my very favorite persons, Michelle Visser. Michelle's family raises pigs on their New England farm. (In fact, reach out to Michelle if you're looking for a great source of pasture-raised pork in the New Hampshire area.)

Michelle is also a published author and my Marketing & Project Manager (pretty much one of my right hands on The Prairie Homestead team).

Michelle and I get a little starry-eyed and do a deep dive into two good animal fats today. We break down the kinds of fat you can source from cows and pigs, why this fat is so good for us, why it ever got such a bad rap, how to render it, how to use each kind of fat, and where to get it if you're not a pig or cattle farmer yourself.

Michelle's Complete Guide to Rendering Lard (https://soulyrested.com/2022/03/17/complete-guide-to-rendering-lard/)

Michelle's recipe she promised: Mint Chocolate Chip Cookies made with Lard (https://soulyrested.com/2022/03/18/chocolate-chip-cookies-made-with-lard/)

Today we're diving deep into the unseen world of sourdough microbes. Karyn Newman, author of the new book Sourdough by Science, personifies the many parts of our sourdough starters and explains the chemistry happening in our kitchens to help us make perfect sourdough loaves. Every time.

Find out the best time to feed your starter, why the fridge is your starter's friend,  and what character in your starter is the most important one (and how to care for it best).

Even learn how to convert any traditional bread recipe to a sourdough one!

I learned so much from this episode, even what I've been doing wrong when I try to use my fresh flour to make my sourdough bread and how to fix it. (I couldn't believe how simple this is!)

About the author: Karyn Newman began her professional life in editing, then embarked on a career in the sciences after earning her PhD in cellular and molecular biology. And she also happens to love baking. She loves using her science background to help non-science folks understand the important details of making a perfect loaf of sourdough bread.

Find Karyn on ig: sourdough by science

Check out my favorite grain mill: Harvest Grain Mill

And the wheat berries I mentioned: Organic Hard White Wheat Berries

Today we're talking about meat in a way we haven't before here on the podcast.  My good friend, Justin Rhodes, is sitting down with me to talk about his version of what some people might call the carnivore diet, or the zero carb diet. Basically, we're talking about what it looks like to eat an exclusively animal-based diet.

We're debunking casseroles,  joking about cabbage killers, talking about chickens as gardeners, and agreeing that neither of us are fans of tongue tacos.

In today’s episode, I’m thrilled to be chatting with a long-time friend, Lisa Bass, of Farmhouse on Boone.

Lisa talks about how she lived the farm life while living in town. And how she cooked like a homesteader before she even owned a farm.

And Lisa and I delve deep into a topic that has always been a thorn in my side. Lisa breaks down the secrets behind her meal planning, how she’s developed a system of routines that works well for her large family. We chat about our family’s staple meals. And Lisa shares numerous great tips, not to mention a few secret weapons too.

And be sure to hop over to Lisa’s podcast—Simple Farmhouse Life—for the rest of our conversation today.

We’re diving into a topic we’ve never discussed here before, and I think you’re going to love the insight Stacy Lyn Harris brings to this “meaty” episode.

We’re breaking down the numerous benefits to hunted meats, comparing grass-fed beef to wild meat, talking about how to hunt even if you don’t own land to hunt on, and even walking through exactly how to start if you’re new to hunting and how to prepare wild game versus domesticated meat.

Stacy Lyn Harris is a best-selling cookbook author. She is also a blogger, speaker, wife, and homeschooling mother of seven children, as well as host of The Sporting Chef TV Show on The Outdoor Channel.

A Skeptic's Guide to Eating Offal

I have to confess. There I was, a homesteader who has been raising and butchering our meat for well over a decade, but I didn’t even know the proper way to pronounce “offal,” not alone how to process organ meats to make nutritional meals out of them.

And I didn’t know if I wanted to know.

Today I'm talking about the liver and the heart and lots of other good stuff with the author of It Takes Guts and Carnivore-ish and the host of Muscle Maven Radio. Trust me, you’ll see offal in a whole new way (and know how to pronounce it).

What Stage of Homesteading are You In?

In today’s episode, we’re talking about a true light-bulb moment for me, when I realized that homesteading happens in distinct stages and I realized which stage we were in and why.

We define the 3 stages and talk about what takes you in—and out—of each stage.

This episode will challenge you to seriously challenge yourself with a palpable life plan, remind you of what genuinely brings satisfaction, and encourage you to truly look at where you're at and where you’re headed.

Greetings again my friends! While it was great to take some time off and enjoy the holidays with my family, I’m thrilled to kick off this new season of the podcast. While there has been a huge shift over the past few years toward grassfed products, some people find the taste of real foods somewhat shocking. The truth is, products like eggs, dairy, and beef can taste different than what most people are used to? Why is this? In today’s episode, we find out why what an animal eats effects the taste of the final product as well as how it looks. In addition, I discuss the nutrient difference between real food products and the grocery store imitations, as well as why it’s sometimes necessary to adjust our taste buds in order to get the food we really need.

This episode is proudly sponsored by Genuine Beef Co. (https://genuinebeefco.com/) This dream has been 4 years in the making, but we are finally shipping our Wyoming-raised beef nationwide! It’s grass fed AND grass-finished, dry-aged to perfection, and vacuum-sealed in a USDA facility. We have 90/10 ground beef, roasts, steaks, and a variety of bundles. Use code PODCAST for 10% off your order.

S7 E13: Systems, Groupthink, and Anarchy?

29 min
View

We made it! Yes my friends, we've made it to the end of another season, and what a season it has been. Throughout the past couple months, I've been discussing how to opt out of many of the systems that govern modern life. While I've enjoyed creating a new style of content and discussing new topics I've never talked about before, it has come with a fair share of criticism. In today's episode, I discuss some of the valid criticism I received over this season, why I object to "Groupthink", and why it's important to have disagreements and healthy discussion with people who don't share your point of view. In addition, find out why I think some systems aren't only valuable but essential for society to function. As always, thanks for joining me on the Old Fashioned on Purpose podcast. Enjoy your holiday season, and I look forward to what's coming in the new year!

While we've been discussing opting out of various systems throughout this entire season, most of our solutions have been to seek out things that aren't necessarily mainstream. However, there is one area of the food system that most of you have the opportunity to take ownership of in your own home. In today's episode, I'm joined by my friend Bailey Vantassel, a garden blogger and enthusiast from California. Together we start at the beginning, discussing how to determine what crops are suitable for you climate, how to analyze and amend your soil, what plants that will thrive in the shade, and so much more. We also discuss what makes a hero veggie, and reveal the key secret to making any garden successful. What is it? You'll have to listen to find out!

It's no secret at this point. No matter where you look, it's likely supply chain issues have had some type of impact on your life. While opting out of chemical laden food seems like a no-brainer for everyone, there's another not-so-obvious industry that effects all of our daily lives. Whether it's hand soaps, lotion, shampoo, or make-up, cosmetics and skincare products carry some of the most toxic chemicals out there. So how do we combat this problem? Today I'm thrilled to be joined by my friend Emily Toups. Emily is the founder of Toups & Co., an organic make up and skin care company based out of Alabama. In this episode, we discuss the chemicals to look out for on labels, tips for removing toxicity and stress in other areas of life, as well as diving into how Emily's been able to create a viable business in the skincare industry. In addition, we discuss how beef fat can be a secret weapon in your skin care arsenal!

S7 E6: The Books I'm Reading Right Now

25 min
View

Without question, reading outside on the porch is my favorite way to relax on the the homestead. However, contrary to popular belief, you won't find me sitting around reading homesteading books for 8 hours a day. In today's episode, I cover my favorite subjects, what I'm reading right now, my feelings on audio books vs. physical books, and what's next on my reading list. Make sure you stay tuned until the end to find out what controversial author I've found to be transformational in my life. What books have been instrumental in helping you improve your life and career.

As I touched on in a previous episode, much of my evolution as a homesteader and as a person in general has revolved around saying 'NO' to traditional systems. However, a recent trip to Virginia forced me to confront another system that I'm not so fond of but have reluctantly accepted in the past: public transportation. Listen to today's episode to find out why I had so much anxiety over flying, how a cancelled flight led to a cross country road trip, and why (and how) Christian and I are opting out of public transportation. If you've ever felt the desire to ditch mass transportation, I'm certain this episode will resonate with you.

When it comes to homesteaders, in many ways we're natural born preppers. While we might not be preparing for the apocalypse, we're always focused on looking down the road to be ready for any situation. One particular situation that always comes up in my head is "What if you couldn't buy food at the grocery store?" In today's episode, I cover the three steps I'm taking to prepare my family for any food supply related issues. I also explain why it's important to focus on 'prepping' skills and tactics that also improve your life in the present instead of just preparing for some potential event that might never happen.

Society creates systems for us to live by far before we are ever conscious of what is going on. While some of these systems might help us, many of them can also harm us and prevent us from achieving greater things in life. In our pursuit of our homestead dreams, we inadvertently cast aside several of the most common and harmful societal constructs. In today's episode, I'm going to cover how opting out of financial, medical, educational, and agricultural systems have created freedom and ownership in our own lives. While being an entrepreneur might not be the thing for you, you're sure to learn many different ways in which opting out of systems can create freedom for you and your family.

Hello again my friends! With so much going on in my personal life and business, I realized I was hitting a wall. After going and going non-stop, I found myself becoming resentful. No matter how much I fought it in my mind, everything around me was telling me I needed to take a break. The past month or so has made me realize that while homesteading is a major part of my life, by no means is it the only part of me. In the past I've been hesitant to speak on other topics, and in today's episode I'm going to explain why that's going to be changing, what to expect, and why sometimes it's important for all of us to take a step back and re-asses where our lives have been going. Join me as I reintroduce myself!

It's that time again my friends. We've reached the end of another season. As I reflected on the different methods of food preservation we've covered over the past several weeks, I came to a surprising realization. There was one common thread between every preservation method. Can you guess what it is? Yes, that's right! Salt is the one constant for all your preservation needs. In today's episode, I cover the different types of salts, why salt can turn your food colors, and how the coarseness of the salt effects overall taste. I also share my favorite salt I literally use on everything. As this season comes to a close, this is a great time to talk about this wonderful ingredient that ties everything together.

- Since salt is obviously one thing I can’t grow here on my Wyoming homestead, I always buy Redmonds in bulk. It never goes bad and I keep it in a bucket in my basement pantry. I have this bag (https://shop.redmond.life/products/real-salt-bulk-25-lb?_pos=3&_sid=68645354b&_ss=r) in there right now. Here's a blog post I wrote last year with more salt FAQS! https://www.theprairiehomestead.com/2020/06/cooking-with-salt.html

- This episode is brought to you by Redmond’s Real Salt, which is the #1 salt I use in all my homesteading cooking, canning, and fermentation. I have learned over the years that not all salt is created equal and having the good stuff really does make a difference in your culinary adventures. Redmond’s is the only salt mined in the good ol’ US of A. I love that it’s mined using sustainable practices AND contains 60+ trace minerals that not only make it incredibly good for you, but it tastes better too. Since I can’t grow salt myself (obviously) Right now, Redmond's is offering 15% off your entire order just for my podcast listeners. Head over to theprairiehomestead.com/SALT and use the code HOMESTEAD to snag your discount.

When it comes to the art of canning, many times it's best to do things by the book. However, as my guest today will explain, there are still opportunities to push the boundaries and get creative. In today's episode I'm joined by my friend Angi Schneider, an author and food preservation specialist who is an expert canner. Together we discuss some of the biggest myths about canning, why salt and sugar aren't necessary, the truth about acid, and so much more. Most important, Angi and I also cover the things you should NEVER do when canning. Whether you've been canning for years or you're just starting up, this episode provides a wealth of information to ensure your safety when preserving your favorite foods.

For many of us accustomed to the standard American way of food preservation, fermentation can be a strange topic to broach. Although it's a subject I've discussed before on this podcast, given the focus of this season I thought it'd be great to bring in a true expert. Today we're joined by my good friend, author and fermentation guru Wardee Harmon. In this episode we cover why fermentation is best for preserving nutrients, the benefits of probiotics, what to use for starter cultures, how to prevent cross-contamination, how to differentiate foam from mold, and much, much more. Wardee literally wrote the book on fermenting so you'll want to bring a pen and notebook to today's podcast. Be sure to listen to this episode all the way through as Wardee offers some incredible resources at the end.
