Bill Rapier is recently retired after twenty years in the Navy, where his duty assignments included several years at SEAL Team 3 and over 14 years at Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Positions held include assaulter, breacher, sniper, team leader, troop chief and military working dog department senior enlisted adviser. He is a blackbelt in bjj, a practitioner of the Sayoc Kali knife fighting system, and trains in both western and Thai boxing. He and his wife live in the mountains of North Idaho where they homeschool their 7 children and are heavily involved in their local church through leading worship as a family, father/son ministry, and all around discipleship.

Today, we are going to chat with you about chores, allowances and what we are currently doing for our children. Some of this is going to be theoretical because we are going to talk a little bit about how money was treated in our homes growing up and what we may or may not do as our children start to get older.   

Of course, we have our own experiences growing up in households that had various rules for chores. It seemed to ebb and flow, depending on the season. The age you were placed a big role on what chores were assigned to us. There were set chores that we all had and didn’t get paid for. In Katie’s family, you were able to do special chores/extra jobs and earn money for them. It was a very slow trickle of money coming in. Because of that, she would store her dollars because it would take forever to save up to buy anything. She got very used to delayed gratification.   

Based off our experiences and what we want to create for our children, one thing we want to avoid for our children is complacency. We don’t want them to be entitled in any manner. We also don’t want our children feeling too independent from us too early. For example, we don’t want them to feel like they have all their own money and they can go buy what they want to buy and then have a battle with them from the time they are 11 years old of them saying “hey, I want to wear this, it’s my money.” We didn’t buy our clothes until we were older. We wore what our parents bought us.   

Growing up in the families that we grew up in, we got to have a lot of unique experiences. We got to do a lot of cool stuff. One way that it was counteracted so we didn’t grow up entitled, was by us all developing a really strong worth ethic and realizing how hard it was to earn money.   

This was a fun walk down memory lane, sharing with you all our money earning journey and what we are currently doing with our children. We gave a lot of context as to where we are coming from and will see how this goes as our children grow up.

As we wrap up the year 2023, we have been thinking a lot about how we are planning our next year. Today, we are going to share some of the new things we plan to do, as well as some of the old things and our general philosophy on setting new years goals, planning the year and reviewing the previous year (which is a huge deal for us). Overall...we are going to take you inside our minds and what we are thinking about this time of year! :)  

It’s encouraging to go back and reflect on the past year because we really love to look at how far we’ve come instead of looking at how far we still need to go. The horizon is always moving and that is just a fact of life. As we grow, that horizon grows. If you’re fixated on the horizon, that is where you find yourself discouraged, overwhelmed and not able to acknowledge the wins and growth in your life. Instead of trying to resist the horizon moving, we just accept that our goals will never feel like we have arrived. You really need to enjoy the journey. One way that you can do that is to look back and say “wow, we’ve come a long way” and measure backwards. One way it’s encouraging to measure backwards is see all the things we have put time and energy into that don’t necessarily show up on a progress report or monetization chart. There are a lot of things that won’t show up on those lists, but they are still such worthwhile investments of our time.   

We love the idea of pictures on a dream board instead of writing out goals specifically, because it captures this feeling or general direction you want to go in. It’s less like you miss the mark or hit the mark. We like just going in a general direction and making sure we keep realigning with that direction throughout the year.   

We are always grateful for the time and energy that goes into planning. Planning takes effort and time. We have spent hours going through our last year in review and then planning our the next year and putting stuff on the calendar. We are grateful for all these things that keep us aligned though. They have been so helpful for us!

We get to talk about young love, marriage, early relationships and all of that fun stuff. We are going to answer some questions that listeners have asked on this topic. Our kids are obviously not of the age where they are getting into relationships, but it has already become a conversation in our home. Some kids become aware of the opposite sex a lot sooner than others. Today, we are going to talk about how our parents navigated that from our perspectives and some thoughts around young budding friendships and romance.   

How are you navigating children who are becoming adults who maybe establish these attractions earlier? What are some ways to slow down the attraction and timelines until they’re ready to actually do something about it? Communicate with your children that there’s a certain timeline for this type of stuff. What is your endgame with this person?

4. Physical touch  

If you have a goal for your children to date to marry, how do you balance protecting and guarding vs. freedom when they start to have an interest in each other? You aren’t dating for just a friend, companionship, romantic outlet or the world’s recreational dating term. It’s a serious thing when you are dating. It’s not recreational to play with your whole life. It’s very foolish to throw it around like a sport you play.

This is our last review of the books we’ve read this year. We really enjoy sharing quarter by quarter the books we’ve read that quarter. Something that we’ve really found ourselves loving is reading. We were both really big readers before the advent of the online world. We fell off the bandwagon for a few years when the internet came out. Everything we were creating and consuming was online, aside from self-development books here and there. The last two years, since we got rid of our smartphones, we have dove back into the world of written literature. It has been incredible blessing to our family!

A few episodes ago, we mentioned in passing that we disapprove of VeggieTales for our children. That comment sparked some inquires from you listeners and you wanted clarity as to why we don’t approve of it. We both discussed it and asked ourselves if this was beyond our opinion and preference or if we do actually have a conviction against VeggieTales. Come to find out, we both have some convictions regarding it. We are going to share what those are in this episode and answer some of the questions that you have about it.  

First of all, VeggieTales is disrespecting and degrading to Scripture. There is no reverence to history and how God chose to tell history. It also doesn’t paint a high view of God for our children. It reduces the Christian heroes of the faith and God’s presence in Scripture as this comedic, foolish nonsense that is worth laughing at and getting a cheap joke from. It is not with awe, holiness and reverence like it should be.  

My issue is the danger with the specific VeggieTale videos that are based from the Bible. It is skewing Scripture and making it a laughing stock and treating it in a very trivial manner. It’s confusing when the message is way off and it’s supposed to be Scriptural based. It’s very foolish and disrespectful to God and Scripture and what He’s done through His people. As well as the really dark things that these people have walked through in faith.   

Our children are capable of so much more than the little crumbs that we feed them. Their brains are very capable of absorbing big concepts and themes. We don’t need to shy away from the truth, elegance and beauty of Scripture.

"Mom-guilt" is a subject I really like to speak about, because we can get condemnation, guilt, shame and conviction all lumped into one pile. When we sort through them, we are able to determine what is conviction, condemnation and how the two types of guilt can flow into either funnel. We can then determine how we can take action on that. We think there is a healthy guilt and an unhealthy guilt. Usually this term is related to moms, but really can be parent guilt, marriage guilt and all kinds of guilt. If you’ve felt guilty or have never felt guilty (and you probably should), then this episode is for you! :)  

We got this episode idea from a question we recently got from an Instagram follower during a Q&A poll - "How to overcome the guilt of leaving children with caregivers (like grandparents) for events?"  

This questions is specifically about how you do it. The first thing you should do is go to Scripture. That is the way you should do everything! You should go to Scripture and say “What is God’s hierarchy and what does He say should be my priority here? Should this thing be my priority in this season or should it not?” It really is seasonal depending on what age your children are in. The only exception to this rule, that I would encourage, is you can’t put your marriage on pause for any season of life. Regardless of how hectic, hard or a big deal financially it is, you can’t just say we will come back to this in five years. You can’t get those five years back.

If you’re getting confused when it comes to raising your children and things are getting cloudy, I think the healthiest thing I did was be off of social media, so I am not seeing other women’s opinions on how they’re raising their children. As long as you have a loving, God-fearing husband, the only voices that you need and pertain to your situation are the Lord’s (getting in Scripture) and your husband’s voice.

Today we are going to be responding to a question that we got during our Q&A poll - How do you deal with all that’s going on in the world? There are certainly things that we have learned while contemplating this question.

We are not totally ignorant or naive to what is going on in the world. We do think it is incumbent among Christians when they are aware of wars and catastrophes to be earnest in prayer. Beyond prayer, if there are things we can do with our dollars or time to support people in need, then we think that is what Christians should do. We were never intended to be as informed as we are of all the bad that’s happening in the world. There comes a threshold where we need to look at what the Lord has for us here in our homes and tend to the needs of our wife, children and then local community. After that, we can see what kind of bandwidth we have to start working outside of those three.

We don’t know what the future holds. We can sit around being dreary about it our entire lives and what we’re scared of never ends up happening. What a waste of anxiety! We are told to be anxious for nothing (Philippians 4:6). The big reason for that is because the Lord is currently reigning on His throne and in control. Theology really comes into play when it comes to how we view the world. When you have this perspective that nothing can stop God’s gospel from going out and more people are getting saved, we can celebrate regardless of what happens to our particular country or lives. God’s mission is being accomplished. Nothing is happening outside of Him allowing it to happen. When you have this complete belief that things are going according to God’s plan, there is incredible peace you can have in knowing that.

As Christians we are to: “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” - Philippians 4:6-7

Today we get to answer your questions about homeschooling. We are also going to update you on what we are doing for our children’s homeschooling when it comes to math, reading, writing, music, history, science and what curriculums we are using. We are both second generation homeschoolers and we get a lot of questions about where our kids are at. We are excited to share what is currently working for us and what hasn’t worked.  

We both love the aspect in our home of educating our children. We feel very aligned together. It’s very much a team effort when it comes to all of our kiddos. We have to rely on one another because we have a lot of little children, but it’s also a passion of ours. We talk about it a lot. It’s so rewarding seeing your children learning and grasping new things.  

One of our favorite things is it feels like we are going back to school. We’ve developed a new love for learning! We know our why and reason now since we know the real purpose of learning. Showing our children why these things are important to learn is something we want to communicate clearly to our children. We don’t want it to be a mindless effort that we are making them do, because every other kid in America is doing it. Every accomplishment they make is so fun. It’s a big family win!

Should Christians boycott Disney?? There has been so much talk on the internet recently with Disney’s "Snow White" coming out. Anytime Disney puts out another movie, more people are talking about boycotting them.   

We recently had an episode on our favorite movies growing up that we want to show our kids. Some of those are Disney movies. Today we are going to be talking about if we are boycotting Disney, going to take our kids to Disneyland, doing regarding showing our kids Disney movies and if we have Disney +. All things Disney in today’s episode!  

When it comes to our parenting, some of the things we want to expose our children to are those stories that have stood the test of time and are cultural references. It’s fun to think about actually introducing our kids to these stories via the original source and source material. It’s always really exciting when you realize that oh, we don’t have to compromise on this. We’ve seen Disney for really long time as this tainted entertainment source.   

Even prior to the very overt agenda to push very woke ideology, we had reservations on a lot of Disney products. There are only a few Disney movies that still fit our criteria even with the older renditions of Disney movies that we would show to our kids. You only have so much energy, money and time. With the awesome stories, like the fairytales and incredible entertainment, we’re going to read those in book form. They’re going to get a step above what Disney is offering.

It’s that time of year! Holidays are upon us. Many of us will be gathering with our friends and family. Today we will be talking about the holidays, how we feel about Friendsgiving and if we think that it is helpful to the Christian community and families or not.

Any time you are not able to connect with family for the holidays, having friends to gather with is an abundant blessing. There was an article written by The Atlantic in 2018 that talks about the rise of popularity in Friendsgivings and how millennials are more and more opting for Friendsgiving over traditional family Thanksgiving gatherings and the reasons behind it. The Atlantic is a very liberal, anti-family and anti-God. They went into how we do so much better when we are able to choose who our family members are. Friendsgiving traditions derived from a lot of people that were living homosexual lifestyles. They felt ostracized by their biological family so they banded together with one another to celebrate these holidays.

We want to make sure to say that obviously, Friendsgivings are not wrong. If you’re not careful though, you can really start to see how these expressions and options are really tearing down the biological family God has put in place. So much of family holidays and traditions can really be enriching to the family unit. It’s one of those things that we want to reclaim, so to speak. If not reclaim, then solidify for our personal family going forward. We believe that when we elevate friendships to a family level, we are actually degrading and diminishing the importance the blood family that God has given us.

This is something that we care about, because we clearly care about the family unit. We don’t want to be insensitive either to different backgrounds that have dealt with stuff we haven’t had to deal with when it comes to holidays. We are talking about the surface level opinion that family doesn’t matter and that it’s all the same, whether it’s your neighbor or biological father.

These are questions that I have been getting quite frequently. Today I will be answering them to satisfy your curiosity, as well as a few others… :)

I feel like this is a little taboo, because whenever you’re talking about restricting anything in pregnancy or postpartum, you can’t recommend that. This is one of the podcasts that we will say, “we can’t recommend it, but…this is what we do anyway.” A lot of evidence that I will be presenting is going to be anecdotal. I’m just going to show you what my experience has been. I feel like it was very helpful for me when I was searching YouTube trying to find podcasts to learn “how can I lose weight postpartum and still keep my milk supply strong?” that I was basically just listening to other women’s stories. I didn’t want a doctor telling me what I could and couldn’t do. I wanted to hear from different women what has worked for them. While this is anecdotal, it is what I have copied from a lot of other women online who also cannot recommend what they are doing, but have had the same results.

Something else I want to say upfront is that when it comes to weight loss or “getting your body back” or whatever postpartum, my motive behind this is to make having children sustainable. I love our children and love raising them. Pregnancy is hard on your body though. I want to do whatever I can to stay healthy and in shape for if God allows us to have more children down the road.

This episode isn’t just about weight loss. It is also about energy and hormone management. All of those things are affected by our overall health. This is why it was important for me to do an episode on this.

The Washington Post did an article on homeschooling last week. Even with as pro-homeschooling we are, they got some things right as far as some concerns to look out for when it comes to homeschooling your children. Today, we are going to discuss those concerns.

We are going to start off by saying that we don’t think public school should be an option for Christian parents. Our children should not be sitting in a godless environment all day long. If we send them to a godless society, we can't be surprised if they come back godless. We are really seeing that with our young people in the church. Regardless of whether that is homeschooling or sending them to a private Christian education, they need to be educated from a Christian worldview. That is the most important thing.  

It’s fun to see how homeschooling has gotten picked up by the mainstream media because it’s such a thing now. The stats in this Washington Post article were saying that homeschooling has gone up by 51% over the past six school years. This is something that all of a sudden people are caring about a lot more.   

Each home needs to take very seriously the education of our children because these are going to be the adults that are leading our society in a very short amount of time. We don’t know when the Lord is going to come back. We don’t know what God has in store for the next generations. We have to parent with a multi-generational mindset. We can do so much as believers if we have bigger goals for our children, regarding how they can be used by God in our society.

Today we are excited to share with you some of our favorite childhood movies, as well as some of the movies we plan on showing to our children. As you know, we are screen free in our normal life. However, maybe once every two months, we do a family movie night. We do have a running list of what we are going to watch with our children. We will also share some of the movies that have impacted our life as adults that we may or may not show to our children. 

Something we look for in a movie are the family relationships. Something can be rated G and totally be undermining the family culture and values we want to put into our children. When we think of anything our children are consuming, we are thinking - What are the ideas that they are cultivating from this? Are they getting new ideas that are inspirational, shaping their moral character, giving them vision for the future or are these ideas corrupting, corroding or just zapping their brains with nothing worthwhile in the film? Unfortunately, there is a lot of stupidity in children’s media.

An Instagram follower asked - How do you introduce your kids to Hell and the fear and wrath of God without scaring them, especially for kids who might then start to just act in fear instead of the love of God?  

After we read this question during a Q&A, we realized we wanted to do a whole episode on it. So today we are discussing how to tell your kids about Hell and God’s judgment without making them afraid in an unhealthy way.   

A danger when you are a parent and the big subjects come up with your children is panicking and saying I don’t have all the right answers. We clearly are not going to have all the right answers, but if you can take these concepts and topics in stride with your children while they are young, it is actually the healthiest way to introduce them to anything.  

God’s Word has all the answers. We don’t have to recreate the wheel. By reading God’s Word the subject of Hell, judgment and wrath will come across just naturally the way God intended it. We don’t have to come up with our own little perfectly packaged sit down conversation with our child. As much as you can read straight unadulterated Scripture to your children, that’s where you know it’s going to come across appropriately because God’s Word does not return void. He promises that in His Scripture.  

Children don’t get confused as easily as we do. We’re told to have faith like children because they are able to have that blind faith, acceptance and believe who God says He is. He is good and just. He is those things, because He says He is.  

We do pray for your families that the Lord would lead you in this. We think that it is wonderful that you want to introduce these things to your children. We don’t think we need to be scared of our children acting out of fear of God. As they read the Scripture and grow in their own understanding of who God is, they are going to hopefully develop that healthy fear. They are also going to understand God’s love and how they fit together.  

Proverbs 9:10 - "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” 

Proverbs 10:27 - “The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.”

Today we are talking about lies, myths and misconceptions that Christian parents believe.

When we’re thinking multigenerational and God’s greater story, then you are thinking you are a part of something so much bigger than us. We need to want to steward our time here well. The best place you can be is home with your kids teaching them and showing them the love of Christ. A lie people believe is that they put ambition against the home. They say if you are an ambitious person then it is going to be very hard to invest in your home. This is not true. If you want something accomplished on a big vision scale, give it to a big vision person. We know many Godly men who have accomplished a lot and are very successful, but their first focus was their kids at home. Discipleship and multi-generational faithfulness begins at home.   

In this Information Age, it is so critical to filter cultural messages through the lens of biblical truth. We can do this by knowing the truth, because recognizing what’s not truth is impossible without knowing what is truth. Spending time in God’s Word and absorbing His truth by the power of His Spirit enables us to identify the world’s lies, about parenting and so much more!

Today, we will be talking about whether or not we should continue honoring our parents as adults and what that looks like in a practical way. The Bible speaks so explicitly about heeding your father’s instruction and how beneficial it is to do that. It will serve you well if you heed their instruction.  

Honor doesn’t imply obedience, agreement or alignment/belief in conviction. The parental role is an honorable role. As Christians, we think it is right to speak well and honor our parents. What does it look like to honor? It really comes to fruit in how you speak about and address people in those positions. It doesn’t mean you are heeding all of their instructions and obeying everything they say, but you are honoring the position.

This is something that we want to continue guarding our hearts on. Hopefully as we grow in our faith, that instinct to make myself the victim and do that psychoanalysis of how we saw it portrayed in our home growing up won’t be there. We need to look towards Christ, the author and finisher of our faith. Thank God that He is the perfect Father. Thank God that His strength is made perfect in our weakness. We will have holes in our parenting, but we want to point our children towards the perfect Father.

Scott LaPierre is a senior pastor of Woodland Christian Church, author and popular conference speaker. He holds an MA in Biblical Studies from Liberty University. Scott and his wife, Katie, have been married for 17 years and live in Washington state. God has blessed them with nine children whom they homeschool. Katie is expecting #10 in October!

Scott became a writer when he started pastoring. Between emails, bulletins, announcements, and especially sermon notes, he spends more time writing than doing anything else in ministry. Because his books come from sermon transcripts, which take twenty-to-thirty hours of work per week, each book contains hundreds of hours of study in God’s Word.  

After publishing his first book, he began receiving speaking opportunities. Because he puts so much time and energy into his sermons, it’s truly a blessing to get more mileage out of them at speaking events. For Katie and Scott both, one of their favorite things to do is travel and put on conferences. They try to give their lives to the Lord’s service. When they go on vacations, they’re usually scheduled around ministry activities. Their kids enjoy running the booth, selling his books, and playing music.

Megan Fox is a Mennonite who lives in a very busy area in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster is full of Mennonite and Amish people. She has 3 kids (ages 5,4 & 1). She has a Youtube channel where she has a lot of homemaking content, shares what life is like in Lancaster County and breaks down some of the misconceptions of the Mennonite lifestyle.

Chuck Black is a former F-16 fighter pilot and currently is the president and general manager of a chemical injection automation company in the oil and gas industry. He has a degree in electrical and electronic engineering and served eight years in the United States Air Force. Chuck and his wife have six children and nine grandchildren.

Chuck first wrote Kingdom’s Edge to inspire his children to read the Bible with renewed zeal. Through his family devotions, he noticed that his children paid much closer attention when a story was told, such as a parable by Jesus. He began to write a parable of the life of Christ set in a medieval time period where swords, castles, and battles were all Biblically symbolic without the use of magic or wizardry. The response from his children was astounding. All of the sword fights and battle scenes are tastefully written so that parents do not have to be concerned.

He is here! Woohoo! Wow. Is there anything better? What a miracle. What a pure blessing. Lionel Peter Voetberg was born on Sunday, July 23rd at 5:36 AM. 8lbs 11oz. God is so generous.     

Is there a more glorious thing than being a vessel that carries, incubates, delivers, then sustains a person that bears the image of our great Creator and King? I cannot do that. Katie just did that. Mothers do that. That is incredible!  

Thankfully our kiddos were sound asleep for the duration of the labor and delivery. Then, as they awoke, one by one, we got to witness unbridled excitement expressed in ways unique to each of their personalities. This has been the most celebratory child because of how much more our kids understand it and how they have been looking forward to it. They were so pumped to welcome this little guy into the family. It has made it really special and fun. We are a home of celebrants. New life is my favorite thing to celebrate.   

We are rejoicing in God’s grace and faithfulness to our family.

Why does it seem that sometimes the most spiritually mature men/families are reluctant to joining a local church? A question that on the surface seems rather puzzling or maybe as though it was an enigma. This has been the case in our own experience in the families we have been a part of and it seems to be the case in many people that we observe from a distance.

We both had similar experiences in our homes growing up. We had fathers that were proactively and very intentionally leading our families in a spiritual manner. They were reading the Bible every day at home. They were studying the Word to understand it and to really be able to defend and articulate their faith. They had a great desire to see their children grow up and walk in the faith. They wanted to equip us with the ability to do that. They also both went through a season of being reluctant to be a consistent part of any local church and opposed to anything formal and official. We were curious what brought this common thread into so many Godly men that we knew of that have been so intentional in leading their homes and families.

Today we are going to talk about what we think our father’s journey was like of not having a high value on the local church, to now definitely having a high value of it and being consistent to their church and why, as well as what we’re planning on doing. We have really come to value the local church and home groups the last three years. It has been such a blessing to our spiritual growth and family. If you aren’t a consistent part of a local body, we highly encourage you to be!
