Somewhere in the Skies

Nearly fifty years after one of the most famous alien abduction cases in history, Travis Walton joins us to reflect on his extraordinary experience. In 1975, Travis disappeared for five days after a mysterious encounter in the Arizona woods — an event witnessed by six of his coworkers and later dramatized in the Hollywood film Fire in the Sky. Now, half a century later, Travis shares where he stands on that life-altering event, how it shaped his life, and what he believes it means today in the larger UFO conversation.

We are joined by investigative reporter, writer, and podcast creator, Eric Benson. Benson is well-known for his hit podcasts, Project Unabom, Suspect, and Death County, PA. However, he recently dipped his toes into the murky waters of UFOlogy, having embedded himself in a UFO conference recently held at Rice University. In his fascinating long-form article for Baffler, titled, "Loving the Alien: Three Days in the Mirror World of UFOlogy, he describes his experiences at the "UFO and the Impossible" conference, where a diverse mix of scientists, experiencers, and spiritual seekers gathered to explore UFOs (or UAPs) through both empirical and mystical lenses. As Benson will discuss, he found the conference's blend of rigorous science, conspiratorial narratives, and deeply personal testimonies a bit unsettling, but nonetheless, compelling. This is no more apparent than when he meets Nancy, an artist who shared both skepticism and raw vulnerability. We break down the piece and where he stands today on the fascinating community we call "home."

Tucked snuggly into the original Project Blue Book files was a two-page memo that easily could have been lost to time. However, in 1967, noted astronomer and computer scientist, Jacques Vallée, was helping organize the overwhelming amount of backlogged files of Dr. J. Allen Hynek. That's when Vallée discovered a letter amongst the files that both fascinated and shocked him. It was stamped in red ink ‘SECRET – Security Information.’ and signed by a man Vallée would refer to only as "Pentacle." Was a secret UFO study running parallel to Project Blue Book and were those involved actually monitoring UFO events in real-time? Even more mysterious, was this secret group simulating planned UFO events as well? We are joined by Micah Hanks of The Debrief to break down the highly intriguing Pentacle Memorandum from a historical context and its possible connections to modern day UFO programs.

Recent unsubstantiated and unverifiable remarks made by NewsNation reporter and co-host of Need to Know, Ross Coulthart, have sparked quite a bit of controversy in the UFO community. On November 7th, 2006, United Airlines employees at Chicago O’Hare International Airport witnessed a craft hovering silently above Gate C17. It wasn’t on radar. It didn’t have lights. It didn’t make a sound. And then, with no warning, it shot straight up through the clouds. Employees of the airport were told not to speak about it the press. The FAA denied the incident altogether. That was, until official FAA audio tapes were revealed, and told a story almost too incredible to believe.

Continuing our coverage of the Tic Tac UFO incident, due to the recent bold claims by Ross Coulthart that have sparked major controversy in the UFO community, we bring you another interview from the archives where we spoke with several witnesses of both the Tic Tac and the Gimbal incidents. Gary Voorhis and Jason Turner describe the dramatic string of events that would ultimately lead to fighter jets being scrambled to intercept the mysterious, oblong-shaped object we've seen in the official Navy video released by the Department of Defense. Then, Matthew Roberts discusses the atmosphere on the USS Theodore Roosevelt when the other two DoD-released videos were filmed and how it was handled in real-time. More importantly, we discuss the impact these events have had on these men during and after, and how it has ultimately led to all three of them continuing to search for answers both in the skies, and from within. In 1959, a 325th Bomb Squadron B-52, one carrying live thermonuclear bombs, was followed across Canada by a UFO. The object was tracked on radar and sighted visually. An interceptor was scrambled from a USAF base in Montana but despite closing to 4 miles, its crew failed to identify what the UFO was, as the latter quickly outran and out-climbed it. Air Defense Command were concerned about a potentially new threat to the safety of the Continental United States, as shown via messages sent at the time.

With proclaimed "bombshell" articles recently released by the Wall Street Journal, it came to light, through an investigation by the Department of Defense's UFO office, AARO, that the United States Air Force, had up until 2023, allegedly faked UFO programs, photos, and videos as a "hazing ritual" for military personnel and to mask top secret programs concerning highly advanced man-made weapons and technology. In 1952, during an attack run on a North Korean target, pilots from a flight of US Marine Corps F4U Corsairs spotted a white circular or oval shaped object orbitting over or near their objective. The flight leader dived on the UFO but it shot away and disappeared. Four pilots provided reports for US Air Force intelligence officers detailing what they saw.

In January of 1960, radar operators onboard a B-52F Stratofortress on a routine mission over an offshore training range picked up a huge object flying at incredible speeds on a collision course with their aircraft. Never sighted visually, it passed by and was also detected by the B-52's tail warning gunnery radar. No other aircraft were on the range at the time. Ground radar did not pick up any contacts. What was it that buzzed the B-52?

Ryan speaks with documentary filmmaker, Jonathan Berman, about his film, Calling All Earthlings, based on the life and work of George Van Tassel. In 1947, George Van Tassel, a Howard Hughes employee and confidante, suddenly quits working for his mentor and ditches the straight life, moving deep into the Mojave Desert where he and his family sleep under a rock. He leaves behind a tattered Los Angeles in the grips of postwar paranoia, opting for the quietude of the Joshua Tree area. It is during an August 1953 full moon that Van Tassel has an encounter with extraterrestrials, who give him the information to build a rejuvenation machine he dubs “The Integratron.” Is Van Tassel crazy or could the Integratron really work? FBI agents try to halt the army of eccentrics who gather in the desert to create a collective, possibly threatening reality on the edge of the American Dream. A gentle inquiry into alternative culture, the story is told by the current residents of the Joshua Tree area, who must defend against rampant militarism and commercialization, all while still waiting for their spaceship.
