Alex Golesh is challenging several Auburn players to STEP UP as the Tigers turn their attention to Southern Miss. After Auburn's dramatic win over Baylor, Golesh revealed that a handful of players received a “wake-up call” after either not playing as much or not performing as well as expected. Now, all eyes are on which players respond and whether we see changes in Auburn's rotations on Saturday night.

Golesh also knows Baylor put some of Auburn's weaknesses on film, and he fully expects Southern Miss to test those same areas. Auburn beat Baylor.

But I don't think Alex Golesh was remotely satisfied with what he saw from the Tigers' offense.

And that could make Saturday's game against Southern Miss more important than people realize.

Normally, this feels like a game where Auburn gets a comfortable lead, Byrum Brown comes out early and Tristan Ti'a gets significant playing time.

I'm not convinced that's happening.

In fact, I'm predicting Brown plays into the third quarter.

Auburn has one more opportunity to get this offense right before SEC play begins against Florida.

The interior offensive line needs answers. The wide receivers need to become more consistent. Auburn needs to establish its running game, continue figuring out the tight end usage and make sure the entire starting offense is operating the way Golesh expects.

This isn't about panicking after Baylor.

It's about the process Golesh has talked about since arriving at Auburn.

The Tigers got the best possible outcome in Week 1: they saw their flaws without those flaws costing them a football game.

Now they have to fix them.

My prediction?

Auburn wins 45-7.

But don't be surprised if Byrum Brown and several Auburn starters are still playing football in the third quarter.

Because after Southern Miss, SEC play begins.

And Auburn needs to be ready.

Auburn spent the entire offseason hearing Alex Golesh talk about leadership.

Becoming player-led.

Next-man-up.

Responding when something goes wrong.

Against Baylor?

Those weren't offseason talking points anymore.

Auburn actually had to prove them.

And three examples from the Tigers' 17-16 win should have Auburn fans encouraged about what Golesh is building.

Start with Elijah Melendez.

The sophomore linebacker was selected as one of Auburn's captains, and Golesh said the defense CHEERED when his name was announced.

Then Melendez went out and recorded 12 tackles.

That's not just a coaching staff telling us somebody is becoming a leader.

His teammates are telling us too.

Then there's Eric Winters.

After a miscommunication helped Baylor score its final touchdown, Winters had every opportunity to let that mistake define his night.

Instead, Baylor essentially came right back at him on the two-point conversion.

Winters made the play.

Game over.

Auburn wins.

Then look at the offensive line.

Both starting guards went down, forcing Auburn to use two backups when it desperately needed a touchdown.

Not in garbage time.

Not with the game decided.

With Auburn's undefeated season sitting in the balance.

And the Tigers went down the field and scored.

None of this means Auburn has arrived.

Far from it.

The offensive line has to improve. The offense has to sustain drives. The defense can't play nearly 100 snaps every Saturday.

But Auburn didn't beat Baylor because everything worked.

A lot DIDN'T work.

Auburn won because when something went wrong, somebody made the next play.

That's exactly what Alex Golesh has spent months trying to build.

And Saturday gave us our first real evidence that his players might be buying in.

Alex Golesh went back to the film after Auburn’s win over Baylor, and he learned A LOT about his football team.

Josh Pate pointed out a Byrum Brown stat that almost NO ONE is talking about after Auburn’s wild win over Baylor. While most of the conversation has centered around Brown’s three interceptions, his performance in the biggest moments tells a much different story.

Brown was 8-of-12 for 110 yards on third down, and when Auburn needed a go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, he delivered. And maybe the biggest takeaway from the win over Baylor isn't how Auburn played.

Because this feels like a game Auburn would have found a way to lose over the last several years.

We've seen it too many times.

The offense wasn't nearly as explosive as many of us expected.

And maybe we underestimated Baylor and just how different that defense would look in 2026.

But Auburn stayed patient.

It adjusted.

And when the Tigers absolutely HAD to execute, they found a way.

We are officially ONE DAY away from Auburn football.

Alex Golesh says eight Auburn offensive linemen have earned the right to play against Baylor.

So does that mean we're about to see Auburn constantly rotating its offensive line in Week 1?

Not necessarily.

Golesh initially raised some eyebrows when he discussed potentially rotating players up front and said approximately eight offensive linemen had earned the right to play.

Considering the offensive line has been one of Auburn's biggest questions throughout the offseason, that immediately sounded a little concerning.

Then Golesh provided some additional context.

Auburn isn't planning to substitute offensive linemen just for the sake of getting eight guys onto the field.

If the starting five are playing well and Auburn's offense is rolling, Golesh isn't looking to disrupt it.

Instead, it sounds like Auburn has eight offensive linemen it feels comfortable using IF they're needed.

And that's a pretty important distinction.

There are still competitions worth watching, especially at left guard, and Week 1 gives this coaching staff its first opportunity to evaluate this group in an actual game.

But this doesn't necessarily sound like Auburn is scrambling to find five offensive linemen before Baylor.

Then there's Bryson Washington.

Golesh confirmed that the former Baylor running back has earned playing time against his old team after putting together an impressive final few weeks before the season.

So how many opportunities will he actually get?

Jeremiah Cobb should still lead this backfield.

Omar Mabson has been one of Auburn's biggest risers throughout the offseason.

And now Washington has officially worked his way into the conversation.

How Auburn divides those carries could be one of the most interesting things to watch Saturday.

The speculation is almost finished.

Alex Golesh believes Auburn is ready to play Baylor.

But is Auburn ready to lead itself?

That's a much different question.

Golesh revealed this week that Auburn will not begin the season with permanent team captains because he didn't feel comfortable naming them yet.

Instead, Auburn will choose captains on a weekly basis.

And I think that tells us a lot about the standard Golesh is trying to establish.

He has talked throughout the offseason about wanting Auburn to become a player-led program. He doesn't want every correction coming from a coach. He wants players holding other players accountable when things get difficult.

There ARE leaders on this Auburn roster.

Byrum Brown. Cole Best. Chas Nimrod. Jake Johnson. Champ Anthony.

But Golesh wants more.

And we're starting to see some younger players respond to that challenge.

Keshaun Singleton is beginning to come out of his shell after an offseason where Golesh consistently challenged him.

Omar Mabson has already earned significant respect from his teammates and has impressed Golesh with his natural leadership ability.

Jeremiah Cobb continues to be pushed to become more vocal.

And defensively, players like Elijah Melendez and Eric Winters are being challenged to take the next step from talented players to legitimate leaders.

That's why this captain decision matters.

Golesh doesn't eventually want this to be HIS standard.

He wants it to become Auburn's.

IT'S GAME WEEK.

The Auburn Tigers officially begin the Alex Golesh era against Baylor on Saturday, and I think the blueprint for beating the Bears is already sitting right in front of them.

Run the football.

Auburn rushed for more than 300 yards against Baylor last season, and the Bears struggled to stop the run throughout the year.

Now Auburn's rushing attack could be even more difficult to defend.

Jeremiah Cobb is back. Omar Mabson should have a larger role. Baylor's leading rusher from last season, Bryson Washington, is now wearing orange and blue.

And then there's Byrum Brown, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards at South Florida.

Baylor has a new defensive coordinator. Maybe the Bears fixed their problems.

Make them prove it.

There's another reason I like this matchup for Auburn.

Both teams lost important players from last season, but I think Auburn did a better job replacing them.

Baylor lost Sawyer Robertson after he threw for more than 3,600 yards and 30 touchdowns. Bryson Washington switched sides. Most of Baylor's top receiving production is gone, and the Bears enter the season with only one returning starter on the offensive line.

Auburn lost plenty too.

But Golesh replaced Jackson Arnold with Brown, rebuilt the receiver room with players who already understand his offense and added Washington to an already talented backfield.

Then comes Baylor's dilemma.

If the Bears commit another defender to stopping Auburn's rushing attack, Brown should get opportunities through the air.

Can he make them pay?

That's one of the biggest things I'm watching Saturday.

But Auburn doesn't need Week 1 to answer every question we have about this football team.

It doesn't need Brown throwing for 350 yards.

It doesn't need to prove the offensive line can handle every SEC defensive front.

It just needs to beat Baylor.

And the blueprint for doing it is already there.
