After just a few short years within the industry, Zarna Garg has comedic achievements most could only dream of. When Garg isn’t touring the world with her show, she’s performing 15 times a week at New York City’s Comedy Cellar, all while creating content for her 709k TikTok followers. Just last week, her brand-new comedy special, Zarna Garg: One in a Billion, premiered on Prime Video. But this hasn’t always been Garg’s life and career. After immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager to avoid an arranged marriage, Garg went on to practice civil litigation law before stepping away to become a stay-at-home mom to her three kids. She eventually decided to write a screenplay called Rearranged—which beat out 11,000 other scripts to win the Top Comedy Screenplay Award at Austin Film Festival in 2019—before eventually pursuing a new career path as a performer.

Makeup artist, beauty titan, and entrepreneur Bobbi Brown is a multihyphenate of the highest order. After beginning her career as a makeup artist who became known for a natural aesthetic that stood out against the highly graphic makeup of the time, Bobbi changed the beauty landscape forever by launching a collection of 10 natural shade lipsticks. Over the next 25 years, she would then build that eponymous brand—Bobbi Brown Beauty—into a billion-dollar brand. Then, in 2016, after over two decades, she walked away. In the four years afterwards, she continued to evolve time and time again. She launched justbobbi.com, an editorial beauty, fashion and lifestyle site; started an ingestibles wellness brand called Evolution 18; and even opened a boutique hotel in Montclair, New Jersey, called The George. Even without a cosmetics company, her influence kept growing: Brown became Masterclass’s first beauty instructor; launched multiple podcasts of her own; and authored nine books. In 2020, four years after she had walked away from the cosmetics world, she dove back in, launching cult-beloved Jones Road, a collection of edited and indispensable clean beauty products for all ages, skin types, and skin tones.

She shares reviews of various products and services with over two million followers on TikTok and Instagram. Her audience comes for the beauty and stays for the personal connection, like her recently shared adoption story, which has since garnered over 11 million views. But back before she was serving up highly engaging content, she actually began her career at a PR agency in NY and subsequently took on clients of her own as a freelance publicist in L.A. It’s been quite the journey to land where she is today, and Chang is enthusiastically candid about just what got her there.

Marguerite Zabar Mariscal: CEO of Momofuku

54 min

Marguerite Zabar Mariscal is the woman leading all that is Momofuku: a pioneering restaurant group credited with starting the rise of contemporary Asian American cuisine in the United States, an assortment of restaurant-grade pantry staples like ramen noodles and addictive chilli crunch, and bona fide culinary empire. Over the span of 11-years, she’s worked her way up from public relations intern to brand director and chief of staff. As the trusted right hand of celebrity and James Beard Foundation Award–winning Chef David Chang for years, in 2019, at 30 years old, she was named CEO of Momofuku. On one hand, it all makes sense (after all, she was born into the family behind the specialty import emporium Zabars), but to Marguerite, the path was far from mapped out ahead of her. “I feel like anyone who grows up wanting to be a CEO is like a psychopath,” she tells Hillary on this week’s episode. Tune in to hear how Marguerite pivoted from thinking she’d find her place within the media world to leading one of the most influential restaurant groups (and beyond) of the past two decades.
