Bonus: How I Lazy Genius Air Travel

26 min
View

Airports and airplanes have a lot about them that’s the worst, but flying is also part of life for a lot of people so why not Lazy Genius it? I’m going to share my start to finish air travel process and how I apply Lazy Genius principles to it. Hopefully, you get some ideas on how to make air travel easier, too.

This episode is heavy on the practicality, y’all. There are so many decisions we make when we travel, and I want to give you just a slew of ways you can apply one of the most popular of the 13 Lazy Genius principles - decide once - to your travel. I hope this is an episode that you’ll come back to before you take your next trip whether it’s a family vacation, a work trip, a surprise visit to see a relative, or wherever your life takes you.

It’s not spring, y’all, I know. Tomorrow is the first day of February and that is decidedly winter. However, the whole point of the Magic Question - what can I do now to make something easier later? Which is a Lazy Genius principle - is to think ahead just a little bit. We’re going to do that today with spring cleaning.

We all have time, we all have expectations about how we want it emptied or filled, and we have a lot of hard, busy, stressful days that we need to manage so we don’t lose our minds. It’s a front-burner challenge pretty much all the time. Today I want to go a bit higher level and share some essential mindsets or mantras that will impact your time management no matter what your time looks like. I have said all of these in fits and starts in different places, but this is your episode to have all of your time management mindsets in one place.

#245 - How I Personally Meal Plan

26 min
View

It’s funny - I talk about meal planning a lot here on the podcast, on Instagram, and in my upcoming book that I can’t wait for you to read, The Lazy Genius Kitchen. But I don’t know that I’ve ever shared how I personally meal plan! Seeing the nitty-gritty can be helpful in figuring out your own nitty-gritty, so that’s what I’m going to share today.

In this bonus episode, Hillary talks about why our bodies aren’t what we look like, how to engage with our bodies in healing ways, and what it means to exist with pain and tension and let it make us more of who we are. Also, her voice is like honey butter. She is just the best.

In my book The Lazy Genius Way, I share 13 principles you can use to Lazy Genius any situation in your life. Sometimes you might need one principle, sometimes a few together, and sometimes you don’t know which to choose. When you’re faced with some sort of challenge whether it’s a system in your home, a relationship hangup, a time management problem, whatever it might be, even with 13 principles to choose from, sometimes that still seems like a lot. Hopefully, this episode will give you a tangible framework for how to choose the right Lazy Genius principle for you.

Lazy Genius of the Week: Paula Kay Myers

Love the soup podcast and need to share with you my LG gift idea. My 80-year-old dad and stepmom, like most 80-year-olds, don’t need or want anything. They actually act bratty when receiving a gift. But 2 years ago I had a brainstorm! I wrapped a case of 12 quart mason jars in Christmas paper and when they opened it I told them it was a soup of the month club. Perfect gift - consumable, practical, and something to look forward to. And I always delivered it with fresh bread. It also obligated me to a monthly visit with them. We were about 45 minutes apart at the time and they absolutely loved it. And began asking me in March when they had the option to renew. My husband and I have since moved 12 hours away so this year when I was visiting after Thanksgiving, I filled their deep freezer with bags of soup and wrapped up 2 cute soup bowls. Best gift I’ve ever given.

Bonus: Your Holiday Horror Stories

A few weeks ago, I posted on Instagram asking for your holiday horror stories. You know, that time you tried to be either super lazy or super genius during the holidays. Here’s a collection of stories for solidarity and encouragement right before the holidays.Oh, and for me, it was the time I had a few friends over for a holiday party, and I thought one was supposed to make a cheese tray for this kind of party. So I placed Saltines and folded pieces of actual American cheese on a platter and thought I was Martha Stewart. You guys. YOU GUYS.Helpful Companion Links - Missing out on the Instagram party? #240 - How to Plan a Personal Retreat

16 min

When I sent out December’s Latest Lazy Letter, I mentioned taking a personal retreat day the week between Christmas and the New Year, and a woman named Rebecca wrote back asking me to explain it. Like, what do you do? How do you plan it? Where do you go? And I realized that I had never really talked about this before. So let’s talk about how to plan a personal retreat.

The number of times I have to do stuff I don’t want to do is a very high number, and it’s part of life. I think it’s important to name what we can be a genius about and what we can be lazy about, but there are things we have to do that we don’t love doing. So how do we do that while still being Lazy Geniuses? That’s what this episode is all about, and we’re going to make it as linear as possible.

After a taco night, I dump all the bits and pieces of leftovers into a taco soup bag for the freezer. When I’m ready for soup, I empty the contents of the bag as a starter. It saves time and the leftovers aren’t wasted.

This is a special, unique little episode because I am not alone. My sister, Hannah, recorded this little bonus episode with me to give some fun and levity but also permission to be who you are in a room even when you don’t know what everyone is talking about.

When the first positive test came back for Covid in my family, I started writing things down. Especially the big things I learned. Even if you’re not in this situation, hearing what people learned from challenging situations is always helpful to me. You can find encouragement or comfort or ideas from someone else’s experience, even if your experience is centered around something completely different. So even if you’re not dealing with Covid, I hope you still find value in this episode.

Today, I’m speaking with therapist and author Aundi Kolber. This conversation is a rich exploration of how to start small in finding a therapist, how to care for ourselves when we’re disappointed (like when we think a pandemic is going to be over and it does the opposite), and how the brain works under stress.

  • Get her book Try Softer and grab the Try Softer Guided Journey (releases October 5th)
  • If you want more resources from Aundi, check out her free companion video series for the Try Softer Guided Journey.
  • To find a therapist, go to psychologytoday.com and use their filter system to name what matters most about your therapist or to emdria.org for therapists who specialize in EMDR. Aundi recommends choosing three therapists you're interested in and requesting a free 20-minute consultation to see if it's a good fit. Most therapists offer this. If finances are a hindrance, ask therapists if they have a sliding scale.

We’re talking about five different personalities of book organization, so hopefully, you’ll see yourself in one of these. We all have different challenges when it comes to organizing our books, but there’s really no one-size-fits-all approach. Having a lot of books doesn’t make you a hoarder. Not having towers of bookshelves doesn’t make you less of a reader. So let’s Lazy Genius how to organize your books.

In the last episode in a quasi-series on getting out the door, we’re going to use Courtney Cleveland’s method of packing for vacation to help us get out the door with all the right stuff (and at the right time!). And the magic of Courtney’s method is the combination of batching and bags. Let’s jump in.

This episode was inspired by last week’s episode The Lazy Genius Gets Out the Door. One of the reasons we all have trouble getting out the door is things not going according to plan. There are so many variables, so many things we can’t control, that shift the whole plan.

There are three steps to flexibility, and we’re going to talk about them today.

#216 - Navigating Siblings Who Fight

31 min

Today, I’m sharing ten things to help you navigate siblings who fight. To give you some context, I am not an expert. I’m only a mom. I am not a child psychologist or a parenting expert. I am in the thick of parenting with two boys who are 11 and 9 and a five year old daughter. It’s not like I’m seasoned in this. What I’m sharing today is simply what has helped in my own experience that is also informed by what I’ve learned from parenting experts but mostly my own therapy.

I get asked about the origin story of this business a lot, especially when I do our Ask Me Anything sessions on Sunday nights on Instagram. I get a lot of questions like “how did you get started, where did the name come from, what made you decide to make a podcast, did you have jobs before this,” so let’s talk about what shaped the Lazy Genius into what it is today!

It’s April, and we’re entering Teacher Appreciation Week soon. Then it’s Mother’s Day and Father’s Day and the end of school. And pandemic guidelines are loosening, people are planning weddings and baby showers. Then, of course, there are birthdays and holidays and all the regular things.

We have many opportunities to buy gifts for people, and it can be overwhelming. So today we’re going to Lazy Genius gift-giving.

20 min
View
