Wool-Shift-Dust: a Silo TV podcast

en us
Elysia and Luke return with weekly coverage of a sure-to-be-epic season 3 of the dystopic scifi thriller Silo , releasing on Apple TV starting July 3. The show that put our podcast on the map (and after which it is named) returns for a third season exploring the origins of the Silo system, adapting Shift , the second book in the trilogy – and we'll be giving you both the book-reader comparisons (without spoiling ahead) and non-book-reader tinfoil hat theories about what's really going on. * In between episodes and seasons of Silo , join us for an in-depth dive into Frank Herbert's novel *Dune* and all of the adaptations of that story. Using the most famous science-fiction book ever written as our base, we're looking at the choices made in different times by different creators: How does one adapt a story that's been deemed unadaptable – what worked, and what didn't? And how does each attempt leave a deeper understanding of this rich galaxy of politics, philosophy, and lore? * Also, browse our feed for our in-depth coverage of Apple TV’s dystopic scifi thriller *Silo* 's first two seasons, from two different perspectives: book reader Elysia, and show-only Luke, with spoilers only up to the episode discussed and equivalent parts of the book. Plus past holiday specials like the endless variations of *A Christmas Carol* as well as *It's a Wonderful Life / Knife* , *The Craft* films, and *Edgar Allan Poe* and *The Fall of the House of Usher* coverage – not to mention our coverage of both seasons of *Beacon 23* – Hugh Howey's other TV adaptation. Silo: S3-e10 – "Troy" of Helen

211 min
View

Elysia helps Luke unpack all the surprises for show-only viewers in this wild and brutal season finale – while representing book readers in doing a celebratory dance of all the book elements finally being shown on screen! They dive into the Operations of Silo 1, "Troy" and Victor's many cryptic facial expressions, and all our questions for listeners at home. Along the way, the community weighs in on everything from inside intel on the accuracy of Daniel's Congressional service and last episode's Portland references to fan theories that drill down to the most essential worldbuilding questions still on the table and/or have Luke handing over his tin-foil supply for hat-making.

Join us on our most epic journey yet through the apocalypse.

Spoilers for all episodes aired to date, and any book elements related to what has already been aired. (And for the in-show-universe short story "The Mystery of the Pez.")

No spoilers for any book (or trailer) elements that have not yet appeared on screen. A separate full-spoiler episode will be available each week to subscribers.

Stay tuned to this feed for a season wrap episode (send us your feedback!) + bonus interview + separate breakdown of the S4 trailer (not discussed in this episode).

Luke and Elysia question lightbulbs, the state of the couple Sims, cat identity, and whether they need to rename the Simsnard scale, before launching into an inquiry behind certain self-driving vehicles and the important question of the ideal Silo 18 blunt rotation.

"A Dark Web" – episode 3 of season 3 of Silo on Apple TV – has Luke and Elysia mining both show reveals and first-book canon to figure out what exactly our characters might be digging up this week. From close encounters of a hacker kind in Silo 18's distant past, which is looking increasingly like our present, to reforged bonds in relationships old and new, we're poring over every detail like we're Sheriff Billings prepping for a Pact competition. And then asking... But what if this were a 1950s Noir?

Elysia and Luke celebrate the return of a long-awaited character and the introduction of one of Elysia's book favorites, and the many moral quandaries he lays on the table. Checking in first on the origin story, Luke lays out his now assuredly more refined non-reader theories, and then (with little book basis) both ponder the mysteries of the happenings of Silo 18, from missing persons to the Algorithm's latest revelations.

At long last, the original Dune novel breakdown series begins in earnest! Following up on their episode about the author Frank Herbert and creation of the book, this episode dives into the beginning of the story itself:

After an opening discussion of the significance and nuance of the overall story with David from the Lorehounds, where they lay the foundations for key vocabulary and themes (00:26:11), including the complexities of Paul Atreides, the balance of powers in the universe, and how the timeline of Dune relates to our own, Elysia and Luke break down the first 10 chapters of the novel (00:48:20), the first half of Book 1 (of 3): "Dune" – just through the hunter-seeker incident.

Warning: We do spoil key plot points in this book, and certain plot points of the follow-up books. Frank Herbert front-loaded those spoilers into this opening section himself, so we're pointing them out and talking about how it all connects.

Key places, characters, groups, and other vocab discussed this episode...

Paul Atreides: Mau'dib, Kwisatz Haderach (more titles to come)

The Bene Gesserit: Missionaria Protectiva, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam, truthsayers, the gom jabbar, the Voice, the Litany Against Fear

The Corrino Empire: Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV, Princess Irulan (writer, Bene Gesserit), the Sardaukar (Imperial army), Salusa Secundus (Sardaukar home planet)

• The balance of power: The Landsraad (Great Houses) / CHOAM Company, the Spacing Guild, the Bene Gesserit – weapons & protection: shield belts, kinjal knife, lasguns, kanly (formal blood fued) – religion: the Butlerian Jihad (ancient war against thinking machines), the Orange-Catholic Bible

House Atreides: Caladan (water planet), Duke Leto (father), Lady Jessica (mother, Bene Gesserit), Thufir Hawat (Mentat: sapho juice), Dr. Wellington Yueh (Suk Doctor), Duncan Idaho (Swordmaster, ambassador to the Fremen), Gurney Halleck (Warmaster, baliset player)

House Harkonnen: Giedi Prime (planet), Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (suspensor suspendors), Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen (nephew, heir), Pieter de Vries (Mentat, ambassador to Arrakis),

House Fenring: The Count and his wife Margot (Bene Gesserit) – Previous inhabitants of the palace in Arrakeen, now swapped and in control of Caladan

Arrakis (planet: "Dune"): Spice melange, Arrakeen (capital city), the Weirding Room, Fremen culture, crysknife, Shai-Hulud (sandworm), stillsuits

Fremen (people): Shadout Mapes (head housekeeper), Liet-Kynes (Planetary Ecologist, Judge of the Change), Chani (Kynes' daughter)

It is time for Luke and Elysia's 2025 Christmas Carol adaptation blitz to come to a close with five of the most fun movies of the bunch, from the first ever Christmas special through the Great Depression and the Old West to love in the Aussie airline air to an underexplored history of Uganda.

Watch the films yourself, or let them recap them for you, pointing out all the best and/or most ridiculous bits.

Elysia and Luke's A Christmas Carol discussion takes a darker turn in this lore-down between the Guy Pearce-starring, BBC co-produced 2019 version – which adds some grimer touches to Scrooge's tale – and the 1964 Twilight Zone-like variation created to advertise the importance of the UN at a time when the US and world in general were on the brink of one war and fully entering another. They'll give you all the history, psychology, and sociology you need to get more out of these two tales of existential dread.

Note: Apologies for the mic issues in this episode, but we hope you enjoy the history and psychology deep dives!

Frankenstein (1931) & Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

153 min Transcript
View

Ayesha from the Every Sci-Fi Film Ever podcast joins Elysia for a look at the classic Universal Monsters films Frankenstein (1931) and Bride of Frankenstein (1935), discussing everything from on-set drama and injuries to Hollywood's new decency codes – to, of course, how the films both do and do not adapt the book they're based on.

As they dissect the philosophy and filmmaking behind these movies, they also set the stage for that period of mad-scientist filmmaking, and give an overview of how the adaptations of this story have gone from there – up to a preview of the new Guillermo del Toro movie Frankenstein (2025) and Maggie Gyllenhaal's upcoming The Bride! (2026).

A Christmas Carol Twists – The verse

145 min
View

Elysia and Luke wrap up their 2024 winter holiday miniseries on A Christmas Carol with a look at seven adaptations that offer twists on the original tale, from meta storytelling (00:04:36), to gender-swapped Scrooges (00:43:02), to trippy musicals that have landed on the favorites end of our lists (01:37:20).

We'll be spoiling these films (see list below), but don't worry if you haven't watched any of them – we'll make sure you know the basic plots and key moments, and of course how they compare to the original tale.

I – Start with the opening notes episode, if you haven't yet, for the background on this series.

II – The sheet music (novella and earlier story) episode is available to Book Club members in Supercast (Silozens or Storyzens)/Patreon.

III – And also join the chorus to discuss some of the most classic classic Christmas Carol adaptations.

IV – Then pause for an intermezzo on Dickens' life and the creation of this tale.

V – With this episode (the verse), our 2024 A Christmas Carol coverage is completed! Expect a reprise with more of the most beloved adaptations next year.

Films covered this episode:

  1. Scrooged (1988, 1h41)
  2. Flintstone’s Christmas Carol (1994, 1h9)
  3. A Diva’s Christmas Carol (2000, 1h24)
  4. A New Diva’s Christmas Carol (2022 remake, 1h24)
  5. It’s Christmas, Carol (2012, 1h30)
  6. Scrooge: A Christmas Carol (2022, animated, loose remake of the 1970 Finney musical, sci-fi twist, 1h41 – Netflix)
  7. Spirited (2022, musical, 2h7 – Apple TV+)

Elysia and Luke gather around the mics once more to continue their winter tale with this briefer interlude looking at one specific film – about Charles Dickens' life and writing A Christmas Carol.

We use that as a jumping-off point to discuss the real man: How much of the film's story is true? What else should you know about him? And, perhaps most importantly for this series... Did he actually invent Christmas? And if not, who did?

Watch out for the final episode in our 2024 A Christmas Carol haunt, where Luke and Elysia watch some of the silliest and most beloved twists on the tale, and find out which ones we think are worth your time.

The Man Who Invented Christmas (2017) is available in most countries on Disney+ or Hulu.

A Christmas Carol Classics – The chorus

150 min
View

The first season of Dune: Prophecy is about to begin on HBO Max, and Elysia is joined by Luke and David to set the stage – first with an exclusive three-way conversation about the world-building of this prequel set 10,000 years before the original book and films, and then (00:24:50) with recap and analysis of a novella set not long before the show, featuring some of the same characters – "Imperial Court" from Sands of Dune (2022).

How ugly could this Atreides-Harkonnen blood feud get? What was Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong's character) like in his younger years? What dangers await in the jungles of Rossak, where the school of the Sisterhood can be found? Answers, or at least teases, await.

Then, continue the conversation with David & Elysia's Dune: Prophecy preview pod on the Lorehounds feed.

The Craft (1996) & The Craft: Legacy (2020)

113 min
View

This year's Wool-Shift-Dust Halloween special is keeping with the season of the witch, flashing back to Elysia and her friend Katherine's high-school days with the girls-will-be-girls horror classic The Craft (1996) – plus, for the full context, the 2020 sequel / reboot The Craft: Legacy. (We watched that film so you don't have to...but here are some reasons you might want to anyway.)

We start with a spoiler-free discussion the production and impact of these movies, plus our overall feelings, before plunging into spoilers for first the original film (00:31:09) and then the new one (01:14:44).

Check out Katherine's writing, photography, and other projects:
