In this episode, Chalene Johnson joins Brock Johnson to break down the biggest dangers of using AI for your personal brand and why the future of content creation is becoming less about information and more about trust, personality, and differentiation.

They start by discussing how AI is training creators to become forgettable by pushing everyone toward the same styles, formats, and messaging. Chalene explains why so much content online suddenly feels identical, and how this is contributing to what Brock calls the coming “trust recession” on social media.

From there, she breaks down how AI is changing the rules of personal branding. Information alone is no longer enough because anyone can generate it instantly. Instead, your personality, perspective, quirks, values, and communication style are becoming the real product. She explains the idea of “assets of differentiation” and why subtle human differences are becoming more valuable in an AI-saturated internet.

They also talk about the slippery slope most creators don’t notice with AI—where enhancement slowly turns into identity replacement—and how creators can use AI without losing authenticity. Chalene shares how she personally uses AI today, where she draws the line, and why authenticity is quickly becoming a competitive advantage.

Finally, they discuss the growing divide between AI-optimized creators and trust-optimized creators, the importance of having an anti-message, and why trust may become the most valuable currency online over the next few years. This episode is focused on helping creators use AI strategically without sacrificing the human elements that actually build connection and long-term influence.

In this episode, Brock Johnson breaks down one of the fastest ways to grow your Instagram in 2026: starting a daily challenge. He explains why this format works so well for both consistency and virality, and how it creates built-in momentum that keeps people coming back to your content.

Brock walks through multiple daily challenge templates you can use, including “Day X of doing Y until Z,” “Day X of doing something for every follower,” and ongoing challenges tied directly to audience growth or engagement. I also share real examples of creators who have used these formats to grow quickly, and how you can adapt them to your own niche.

From there, he explains the two ways to approach challenges—using them for consistency or for virality—and how your strategy should change depending on your goal. If you want consistency, Brock shows how to keep your challenge simple and sustainable. If you want virality, he breaks down the importance of commitment, curiosity, and building a journey people want to follow.

Finally, Brock covers practical tips like how to pivot your challenge if needed, what to expect after the initial posts, and why early dips in performance are normal. This episode is focused on helping you choose the right challenge structure and execute it in a way that leads to real Instagram growth.

In this episode, Brock Johnson breaks down the truth about how to get 100K subscribers on YouTube and walk through the exact system he used to get there after starting my channel on October 30, 2022. He focused on the four key ingredients that drove growth: the channel setup, the gear, the team, and the content.

Brock starts with the foundation of the channel, including why a clear niche matters, how to optimize your banner and profile, and how to make your channel immediately understandable to new viewers. He then explains the evolution of gear—from starting with a phone and basic tools to upgrading over time—and why your equipment matters less than your strategy early on.

Next, Brock breaks down the role of building a team, including the four key hires that made the biggest difference: an editor, thumbnail designer, channel manager, and sponsorship manager. He also shares practical advice on hiring, including starting small, testing with short trial periods, and using AI tools or beginner talent to reduce risk.

Finally, he covers the most important factor: your content. Brock explains why packaging is everything—thumbnail, title, and the first 60 seconds—and how to approach each one strategically. This includes thumbnail design tips, title optimization using tools like VidIQ, and how to structure your opening to keep viewers watching. This episode is focused on building a repeatable system for growth and understanding what actually drives subscribers on YouTube.

MY FACELIFT REGRETS: WHAT I WISH I KNEW BEFORE SURGERY

A note before we start: Yes, I had a facelift. I'm going to tell you everything. The stuff that went right, the stuff I wish I'd done differently, and the things I genuinely haven't heard other women talking about. If you're considering this or just curious, this one's for you.

My surgery went right.

I know that's not what you were expecting when you clicked on a post called “facelift regrets.” But that's actually the whole point. My regrets aren't about botched results or a surgeon I'd warn you away from. My surgery went well. I had an extended deep plane face and neck lift at 57 and came out the other side with almost no pain, minimal complications, and results I'm genuinely happy with.

And I still have regrets.

Not about having the surgery. About the things I didn't know going in… the things nobody really talks about… and honestly, about some of the things I said publicly that I wish I'd framed differently. Because my experience was not the whole picture, and I owe it to every woman who's considering this to be completely straight with you.

I'm coming up on six months post-surgery. Here's everything I wish I'd known.

Table of Contents

Toggle

What I Actually Had Done

Before we talk about regrets, you need to know exactly what I had done because comparing numbers and procedures without context is one of the biggest mistakes women make when researching facelifts.

I asked for the works. My doctor said no to some of it, which turned out to be exactly right. Here's what I actually had: an extended deep plane face and neck lift with central compartment neck dissection, laryngeal setback, platysmal and lateral functional platysmal sling, a small amount of CO2 laser under the eyes, an upper blepharoplasty (upper eye lift), and an under eye pinch.

A lot of that is neck reconstruction. I had very pronounced platysmal bands and a significant amount of neck work done. An extended deep plane lift is very different from a lower facelift where a surgeon just pulls the skin back. With a deep plane, they're moving muscles, moving ligaments, repositioning the structure of the face back to where it was. It's a fundamentally different surgery with a fundamentally different recovery.

What I didn't do: a temporal lift, lip lift, nose work, skin resurfacing, volume work, or fat transfers. Some of those I kind of wish I had, and we'll get to that.

The one thing I didn't know I needed and wouldn't have thought to ask for was the upper blepharoplasty. My eyes weren't something that bothered me going in. But of everything I had done, the eye lift made the single biggest visible difference. My eyes looked so much younger and more open. After the surgery, people kept telling me my makeup looked better. I wasn't wearing any more makeup. The eye lift did that. If you're feeling like you look tired and you're on the fence about an upper bleph… don't be.

Regret 1: I Made It Sound Too Easy

This is the one that weighs on me the most.

Because I had almost no pain, because I was genuinely excited about the process and the results, and because I was documenting it on short-form video where you're naturally condensing things… I made it sound easy. And I didn't always explain the full extent of the preparation I had done that made my recovery go so smoothly.

I heard from more than a couple of women after their own surgeries who came back to me and said it wasn't like what I described. For some of them it was significantly more emotional and more physically difficult than they expected. And I know that some of that is because I hadn't said clearly enough: this is just my experience, and this experience was the result of an insane amount of intentional preparation.

I treated my recovery like a full-time job:

  • hyperbaric oxygen chamber treatments five days a week before surgery
  • full red light therapy bed five days a week
  • strict anti-inflammatory diet
  • researched which supplements to stop 30 days before surgery so I wasn't thinning my blood
  • bolstered my immune system for months beforehand
  • delayed my surgery once because I had been exposed to mold and my immune system was compromised
  • hired friends to help manage my medications, incision cleaning, bandage changes, icing schedule… everything.

Because I knew that what happens before and after the surgery makes just as much difference as the surgery itself. Most people only think about the part one other person controls. The part you control makes the biggest difference in your result. And I didn't always communicate that loudly enough.

Regret 2: I Didn't Say Every Single Thing Out Loud to My Surgeon

There's this level of intimidation most of us feel sitting in front of a doctor. Even when you've done your research, even when you know what you want, even when it's your face and your money and your decision… you don't want to seem too picky. You don't want to be rude. You don't want to point at something and have them think you're being difficult.

I did that. I held back some things. And now I can see them.

There's a volume loss on one side of my face. I knew it was there before surgery. I didn't bring it up explicitly enough. After a deep plane lift, when things are pulled back and repositioned, asymmetries you had before can become more visible because you're tightening without filling. I could have addressed it while I was in there. Now I'm waiting until I hit the one-year mark to fill it. It's a minor thing. But when you've spent that much time, money, prep, and recovery… you don't want to be sitting there at month three thinking, I could have just done that while I was already on the table.

Same thing with my nasolabial folds, those smile line creases. I thought they'd improve more than they did. When I asked my surgeon about it after the fact, he explained that pulling further would have distorted my lips. What we think we want and what's actually achievable aren't always the same thing. And if I'd had that conversation in detail before surgery I would have gone into it with the right expectation instead of spending two months wondering if something had gone wrong. It hadn't. He did exactly what he should have.

The lesson: say every single thing. Bring photos. Tape your face up (I actually did this for about a year before surgery and I highly recommend it as a visual tool) and point to exactly what you want addressed. Your surgeon cannot read your mind. Don't protect their feelings. It's your face.

Regret 3: I Skipped the Volume Work and I Wish I Hadn't

When I was planning my surgery I was so focused on the lift… the neck, the jawline, the structural repositioning… that I didn't think hard enough about volume. I didn't do any fat transfers. I didn't do any volume restoration. And some of that I kind of wish I had.

Here's what most women don't fully understand going in. A facelift lifts and repositions. It does not fill. As you age you lose volume in your face, around your temples, your cheeks, under your eyes, and a lift pulls everything back beautifully but it doesn't replace what's gone. In some cases, like mine, pulling things back can actually make volume loss more visible because you've tightened the surrounding tissue without addressing the hollow.

I knew I had some asymmetry and volume loss on one side. I just didn't push the conversation far enough to address it while I was already in surgery. Now I'm waiting until the one-year mark to fill it. Which means more appointments, more recovery, more cost… for something I could have handled in one go.

If you're planning a facelift, have an explicit conversation with your surgeon about volume before you finalize your surgical plan. Ask specifically whether fat transfer or filler would improve your result. Ask what the lift will reveal that isn't currently visible. A good surgeon will tell you honestly. And if you're already working with a patient advocate, this is exactly the kind of conversation they can help you prepare for so nothing gets left on the table.

Literally.

The Emotional Impact

I was not one of the women who experienced a significant emotional reaction post-surgery. But I've heard from enough women who did that I feel like I need to say this clearly.

Some women come out of facelift surgery and fall into an unexpected emotional spiral that has nothing to do with how the surgery went. It can show up as anxiety, grief, loss of control, or a deep unsettling feeling that's very hard to name. In the women I've talked to who experienced this, many had a history of childhood trauma. And when you think about what surgery actually involves, being fully under, having no control over what's happening to your body, trusting someone with your life… it makes sense that it could trigger something deep.

If you have any trauma history at all, please factor this into your preparation. Don't go into it assuming that because you've done the emotional work, this won't touch you. Talk to a therapist before. Make sure you have strong support in place for recovery.

What I'd Tell You About Recovery

Healing is not linear. That sounds simple but it doesn't sink in until you're six weeks out, feeling great, convincing yourself you can go back to everything, and then your skin completely revolts.

That's what happened to me in January. I tried a new product on my face and got contact dermatitis. My skin is a different organ now. It's thinner. It's more sensitive. It reacts to things it never reacted to before. I never had sensitive skin before this surgery. I do now. The facelift doesn't change the texture of your skin, it actually makes it thinner, which means you have to treat it differently going forward.

I've completely changed my skincare routine. I use far fewer products and focus entirely on collagen production, barrier protection, and skin thickness. I did a whole separate post on the exact routine, including the two prescription actives and the $12 barrier cream that every single dermatologist recommended when my skin freaked out. Here's that post.

Think of your healing as a six-month season, not a two-week recovery. Your face is still changing at six months. My surgeon told me I'll see changes for up to a year. So if you want to do any additional filling or tweaking after, which I do, wait until the one-year mark. I know that requires patience. I am not a patient person. But you spent real money and real recovery time on this. Let it finish.

Also budget for the things most people forget to factor in. Compression garments. Special bandages and ointments. The wedge pillow for sleeping upright. The cost of extra care in recovery, whether that's a recovery house, a nurse, or flying a friend in. The hyperbaric oxygen and red light sessions if you go that route. Time off work. These all add up and being surprised by them mid-recovery creates stress, and stress impacts healing.

The Numbness

They tell you your face will feel numb. I want to tell you that I was still not prepared for how strange that actually feels.

When nerves get severed and repositioned, the numbness isn't painful. It's just profoundly weird. Like your face doesn't quite belong to you. I couldn't tell how hard I was pressing when I was doing lymphatic massage. I couldn't gauge pressure when I was doing my skincare routine. It gave me a real understanding for people living with neuropathy. It's not dangerous. It resolves over time. But “your face will feel numb for a while” does not fully prepare you for the experience of not being able to feel your own face.

One More Thing About Being Public

If you choose to document your facelift the way I did, be ready for the fact that your face becomes a group project.

People will tell you that you looked better before. That the surgeon pulled you too tight, or not tight enough. They'll ask why you did your eyebrows (I didn't) or why you didn't do your lips or why you did this at all. Strangers with no photos on their profile will diagnose your result with complete confidence.

I genuinely don't care. I'm level 57 and I have the freedom that comes with that. But if you're not there yet, factor it in. Public transparency is wonderful and I believe in it. Just know that openness invites opinions, and not all of them will be kind or informed.

The Bottom Line

A facelift is not a manicure. It's a major surgical decision with real risks, real preparation requirements, and a recovery that takes longer than most people expect or plan for.

My facelift regrets have nothing to do with the result. They're about the things I wasn't fully prepared for, the communications I didn't have explicitly enough, and the ways I may have made it sound simpler than it is for women whose experience was harder than mine.

If you're considering this, here's what I'd tell you:

Work with a plastic surgery patient advocate (like The Beauty Brokers) before you choose a surgeon. Say every single thing that bothers you out loud in that consultation room. Prepare your body and your immune system like it's your full-time job for months beforehand. Build a real recovery plan, not just a week off work. And think of your healing as a season, not a deadline.

For the complete breakdown of everything I bought, every supplement I took, every step of my prep and recovery in detail, it's all on my Patreon. It covers pricing, how I found my surgeon, the patient advocate process, everything.

And for the skincare routine I switched to after surgery to protect and rebuild thinner post-facelift skin, read this post next.

Love you, mean it,

Chalene

If you've been eating less, working out harder, and still watching your midsection get thicker… you are not doing it wrong.

You're just following advice that was never designed for your body at this stage of life.

If you’re in perimenopause or menopause and can’t lose belly fat… it’s not because you’re doing it wrong.
It’s because this type of fat (often called cortisol belly) responds to completely different signals than it did in your 30s.

Once I understood why, everything clicked. So let's get into it.

Table of Contents

Toggle This Isn't the Same Fat

The first thing you need to understand is that what you're dealing with now has a name: visceral fat.

This isn't the soft, pinchable fat just under the skin (that's subcutaneous fat). Visceral fat sits deeper. It wraps around your organs (your liver, your pancreas) and it pushes outward. That's why so many women describe feeling “thick” through the middle even when the scale hasn't moved much. The weight distribution shifts, and nothing fits the way it used to.

Visceral fat is also metabolically active in a way that regular fat is not. It's wired to respond to stress hormones. Specifically, cortisol.

And that's where the real conversation starts.

The Cortisol Belly: What's Actually Happening

You've probably heard the term “cortisol belly” thrown around, but it usually gets oversimplified to “stress makes you fat.” That's not the whole picture.

Here's what's actually going on for women in perimenopause and menopause…

As estrogen declines (and it can drop by as much as 90% during perimenopause) your body loses one of its primary fat-storage regulators. Estrogen acts like a traffic director, telling your body where to store fat. When estrogen exits, cortisol steps in to direct traffic. And cortisol's preferred destination? Your midsection.

But it goes deeper than that.

Visceral fat has four times more cortisol receptors than subcutaneous fat. That means it is literally wired to pick up on every stress signal your body sends: a bad night of sleep, an intense workout, not eating enough, emotional stress, even the stress of trying to lose weight. All of it gets absorbed directly into visceral fat tissue.

And here's the part that stopped me cold when I first understood it…

Inside visceral fat cells, there's an enzyme that takes inactive stress hormones floating harmlessly in your bloodstream… and reactivates them into potent cortisol. Right inside the fat cell itself.

That means visceral belly fat is actually manufacturing more visceral belly fat.

It becomes its own stress hormone factory. The more cortisol you have, the more visceral fat you accumulate. The more visceral fat you have, the more cortisol gets produced. It's a loop, and it's why the usual approach keeps backfiring.

Why the Old Advice Makes It Worse

When we notice weight creeping up around our midsection, the instinct is to double down. Eat less. Cut carbs. Add more cardio.

It feels disciplined. It feels logical.

But for midlife women  (once estrogen is in decline and cortisol sensitivity is elevated) that approach is a trap.

Severe calorie restriction signals your hypothalamus that you're in famine. Your brain doesn't know you're dieting. It only knows food is scarce, and its job is to keep you alive. So it slows your metabolism and spikes cortisol. You might lose weight on the scale, but visceral fat often stays, or increases, because cortisol is being driven up by the very restriction you thought would fix the problem.

Here's the real gut punch: when you eventually return to normal eating, your metabolism is slower and your cortisol is higher than when you started. That's when the surge of visceral fat really hits.

The same applies to excessive cardio. High-intensity training is a physiological stressor. For a period of time when I was trying to reduce my own visceral fat, I stopped all HIIT completely. Went from five days a week to zero. I shifted to zone 2 cardio and focused on calming my nervous system, because my body needed to feel safe, not chased.

That was what was right for me. It may not be exactly right for you. But the principle holds: chronic stress of any kind:  undereating, overtraining, poor sleep, constant mental load feeds the cortisol loop.

What Actually Works

There's no extreme protocol here. What actually moves the needle is addressing the root causes consistently. Here's what worked for me, and for tens of thousands of women I've coached.

Get into a deficit — but not a steep one. You do need a calorie deficit to lose fat. That part is true. The key is making the deficit moderate enough that it doesn't spike cortisol. Think sustainable, not aggressive.

Front-load your protein. This is the single shift that changed the game for me. Not just eating protein. I'd been doing that for years. But starting every meal with a minimum of 25 to 30 grams of protein before anything else on the plate.

This stabilizes blood sugar, blunts hunger hormones, and ensures you're hitting your protein targets without the stress of counting everything else. Sometimes that meant having a cup of cottage cheese before leaving for dinner. Sometimes it was a quick protein shake. The point is that protein came first, every time.

Use the 1-1-1-4-5-6 system. This is the simplest protein reference I've ever used, and I still use it. Think of it like a phone number.

The three ones are your white proteins:

  • 1 scoop of protein powder = approximately 25 to 30 grams of protein
  • 1 cup of cottage cheese = approximately 25 to 30 grams of protein
  • 1 cup of egg whites = approximately 25 to 30 grams of protein

Then:

  • 4 ounces of chicken = approximately 25 to 30 grams of protein
  • 5 ounces of steak = approximately 25 to 30 grams of protein
  • 6 ounces of fish = approximately 25 to 30 grams of protein

No calculator. No weighing. Just eyeball your portion, front-load it, and move on.

As a general target, aim for roughly one gram of protein per pound of your ideal body weight, spread across meals, with at least one high-protein snack. Four small meals, each hitting 25 to 30 grams, is very manageable once you have this framework.

Shift your movement strategy. Lift weights with progressive overload. Muscle is your metabolic foundation — it's what elevates your resting burn and keeps cortisol in check long-term. Cardio that's calm and consistent (zone 2 walking, Japanese walking intervals) supports fat loss without spiking cortisol the way high-intensity training can.

And this one surprises most people: move more throughout the day, not just during your workout.

Of the total calories you burn daily, only about 5% comes from structured exercise. Up to 15% comes from NEAT — non-exercise activity thermogenesis. That's just… moving. Pacing. Standing. Walking while you return texts. Choosing not to sit for three hours at your desk. A walking pad for your work calls. These non-workout movements add up in a real way, and they don't drive up cortisol.

Prioritize sleep and stress reduction. Sleep deprivation is a direct cortisol trigger. So is constant mental load and decision fatigue. These aren't soft lifestyle suggestions — they're physiological interventions. Protecting your sleep and genuinely reducing worry (not just managing stress, but releasing it) directly impacts visceral fat.

I know that sounds too simple. But when I stopped stressing about my belly fat… it started coming off.

The Supplements Worth Considering

I used to be skeptical of supplements. I worked in the fitness industry for years and thought it was mostly a money grab.

Then my hormones shifted and I understood: as estrogen declines, your body stops absorbing and producing certain nutrients the way it once did. Supplementation isn't optional anymore …it's targeted support for a body that's working under different conditions.

What made a real difference for me:

Berberine + Chromium: These support insulin regulation, help your body process sugars more efficiently, and have a meaningful effect on cortisol response and hunger hormones. They're not an appetite suppressant, but they do reduce cravings. For women looking to support their body's natural GLP-1 production without pharmacological intervention, this combination is worth researching. Look for a product that includes both, and confirm third-party lab testing before you buy.

Magnesium (before bed): This is one of the most common deficiencies in midlife women, and it directly impacts sleep quality, cortisol regulation, and insulin sensitivity. Look for a formula with multiple forms of magnesium…different types serve different functions, and getting several in one supplement is far simpler than taking four separate bottles.

Vitamin D + Omega-3s: Both are essential for hormone function, inflammation regulation, and metabolic health. Most midlife women are low on both without knowing it.

Fiber: Fiber supports gut health, blood sugar stability, and natural GLP-1 production. Increase it through whole foods first, and consider a supplement if your diet isn't hitting the mark.

The Mindset Piece Nobody Wants to Hear

Stressing about your belly fat literally creates more belly fat. That's not a metaphor. It's the cortisol loop in action.

At some point I just… stopped. I stopped being obsessed with the photos, stopped tracking every macro, stopped treating every meal like a test I was failing. And things started slowly improving. Not overnight. Over years. But the trajectory changed.

I looked back through photos recently from my mid-to-late 40s when I was doing more cardio than I ever have, grinding through intense workouts, restricting calories. I was soft everywhere and exhausted. Now, lifting heavy, doing zone 2, prioritizing protein without intense macro counting, getting my supplements right, protecting my sleep… I'm leaner than I was then.

That took time and patience. It required believing that the best years for my body weren't behind me.

They weren't. And yours aren't either.

The Bottom Line

Belly fat in midlife doesn't respond to the old playbook because it's driven by a different mechanism. Visceral fat is a cortisol magnet, and chronic restriction, overtraining, and stress feed it directly.

What works is:

  • A moderate calorie deficit that doesn't spike cortisol
  • Front-loading 25 to 30 grams of protein at every meal using the 1-1-1-4-5-6 system
  • Lifting with progressive overload to build metabolic muscle
  • Zone 2 cardio and daily NEAT movement instead of punishing HIIT
  • Prioritizing sleep and genuinely reducing stress
  • Supporting your body with targeted supplementation (berberine, magnesium, vitamin D, omega-3s, fiber)

None of this is a quick fix. All of it addresses the root cause.

And once you're working with your hormones instead of against them, you'll finally start seeing the progress you've been working so hard for.

Love you. Mean it.

Love you. Mean it.

A note before we dive in: Yes, I had a facelift in 2025. I want to be upfront about that because I always am. But a facelift stretches skin, it does not change your collagen, your texture, your dryness, or your skin's ability to hold moisture. Everything I'm sharing here I started seven months before the surgery and I'm still doing it after. So… we good? Cool. Let's talk about your skin.

If you've been layering serums, rotating through every product a dermatologist or influencer ever recommended, and your skin still feels dry, thin, and like it belongs to someone older than you… you are not doing it wrong.

You're just following a skincare routine that was designed for a version of your body that no longer exists.

After 40 (and especially once you hit perimenopause or menopause) your skin is a completely different organ. The menopause skincare routine that actually works isn't about more products. It's about understanding what changed biologically and addressing that directly. Once I figured this out, I threw out half my bathroom cabinet and my skin started actually improving for the first time in years.

Three steps. That's it. Let me show you exactly what they are and why they work.

The Real Reason Your Skincare Stopped Working

I'll be honest with you. There was a point where I was doing a 12-step routine. Layering products from every expert I'd ever interviewed. And at one particularly low moment… I spent $700 on a face cream. Seven. Hundred. Dollars. Because someone convinced me it would save me from ever needing Botox.

I was like a crocodile in a robe, slathering on miracle creams that were doing absolutely nothing. And I couldn't figure out why.

Here's what nobody told me: the products weren't the problem. The problem was that I was treating the paint while the foundation of the house was crumbling.

Once estrogen starts to decline (and it can drop as much as 90% during perimenopause) your fibroblasts, the living cells inside your skin that manufacture collagen, stop getting the signal they need to do their job. No estrogen signal means no collagen production. No collagen means thinner skin, more dryness, less elasticity, and a compromised barrier that reacts to everything.

So no matter how beautiful or expensive the products you're putting on top… if you haven't addressed the foundation, you're painting a crumbling house.

Most women lose up to 30% of collagen production in the first five years of hormone decline. That's not a gradual drift. That's your skin becoming a completely different organ in a very short window of time. And it's why the routine that worked at 35 doesn't work now.

Once I understood that, I stopped chasing products and started asking a different question: what actually rebuilds the foundation?

The answer turned out to be three things.

The 3 Things Your Menopause Skincare Routine Actually Needs to Fix

Before I tell you what the three steps are, I want to give you the filter I now use for every product decision. Because once you have this, you'll be able to look at anything on your counter and ask: does this actually address one of these three things on a foundational level? If not… it's probably unnecessary.

The three things your skin needs to address right now:

  • Skin thickness (rebuilding the dermis)
  • Collagen production and cellular turnover
  • Skin barrier repair and protection

That's it. Not hydration as a surface fix, or brightening, or tightening. Foundation first. Everything else is paint.

Now let's go through each step.

Step 1: A Gentle Cleanser That Protects Your Barrier (Not Strips It)

This one took me a while to accept because I used to think that tight, squeaky-clean feeling after washing meant my cleanser was doing its job.

It wasn't. That tightness is damage.

When your skin's barrier is already compromised from hormone decline (and it is, for most of us in midlife) a harsh cleanser is like pressure washing a house that's already got cracks in the foundation. You're making the problem worse every morning and night without realizing it.

What you need in a midlife cleanser:

  • Zero fragrance
  • pH as close to your skin's natural balance as possible
  • No harsh stripping ingredients
  • Ideally formulated to actively protect and support the barrier

When you're done washing your face, your skin should feel soft and normal. Not tight or squeaky. Just… calm.

This sounds simple but it rules out most popular cleansers immediately. If yours leaves your face feeling tight, swap it out before anything else. You're undermining every other step in your routine.

Step 2: The Two Actives That Actually Rebuild Your Skin (Alternated, Not Stacked)

This is where everything changes. And this is also where I need to be real with you: both of these actives require a prescription. I know that sounds like a lot. It's genuinely not. I'll tell you exactly how I get mine and how affordable they actually are.

Here's the approach: you alternate these two actives. Night A, one of them. Night B, the other. You do not use both on the same night. Stacking actives on midlife skin is like doing every muscle group in one workout. Your skin needs time to recover and rebuild between sessions. Overload it and it stays inflamed, which means zero progress.

Night A: Tretinoin

Tretinoin, you've probably heard it called Retin-A, has 40 years of clinical research behind it. It's the gold standard active for a reason.

What it actually does:

  • Signals your skin to increase collagen production
  • Speeds up cellular turnover so you're generating new, healthier skin cells
  • Thickens the dermis over time
  • Helps your skin hold moisture

It's strong. Start with less than a pea-size amount, and I mean that — start with half a pea. Your skin may get red or peel a little at first, especially if you've never used it. That's cellular turnover happening. It's not a bad sign. But you can blow up your skin if you go too hard too fast, so resist the urge to overdo it.

Mine costs less than $25 a month. I use it every other night so a small tube lasts a long time.

Night B: Estriol Cream

This is the piece most midlife women are missing entirely, and it's the one that made the biggest difference for me personally.

Remember how I said estrogen is what signals your fibroblasts to produce collagen? Estriol is the weakest and most topically targeted form of estrogen, and applying it directly to your skin essentially restores some of that signaling that got lost when your hormone levels dropped. It tells your skin: hey, make collagen again.

I know what you're thinking. Estrogen… on my face?

Yes. And it's not new. Doctors have been doing this for decades. The research that exists isn't as common as the research on tretinoin, but it's genuinely promising. Studies have shown decreases in wrinkle depth, improvements in elasticity and firmness, and better hydration in the face and neck. The formula I use is 0.3% estriol combined with DMAE and hyaluronic acid. Those three ingredients together are specifically targeted at rebuilding the skin's collagen signaling system.

A three-month supply runs about $150, but because I alternate it every other night, that same supply lasts me six months. So we're talking roughly $25 a month for a prescription-strength hormone cream that's actively rebuilding my skin's foundation.

Two things worth knowing before you start: estriol does require a prescription because it's a hormone, not a cosmetic. And if you're a breast cancer survivor or at elevated risk for estrogen-positive breast cancer, this is a conversation to have carefully with your doctor before proceeding.

How I get both prescriptions without fighting my regular doctor for them: MIDI Health. All of their clinicians are trained specifically in menopausal care, so they already know about estriol, they know the research, and they don't need you to come in with a stack of studies to convince them. They're in all 50 states, they accept most insurance, and you can book an Age Well appointment that covers your hormone panels and all the labs your regular doctor keeps telling you aren't necessary. That's actually how I started using MIDI… because I needed someone who wouldn't look at me blankly when I asked about estriol face cream.

What About Red Light Therapy?

While we're talking about rebuilding skin thickness and collagen, I want to mention one device that I use and that the research actually supports: red light therapy.

I've interviewed a lot of dermatologists and plastic surgeons on The Chalene Show, and the ones I trust most are the skeptics — the ones who won't endorse something unless the science is there. When I asked about red light devices specifically, the answer was consistent: they work, but the technology and quality of the device matters enormously.

The one I use is the iRestore Elite. I originally got it for hair regrowth — and I am seeing regrowth — but the skin benefits are real too. Red light at the right wavelength has clinical evidence behind it for increasing dermal thickness and supporting collagen. I use it at least three times a week while I'm doing my makeup, took about three days to build the habit, and now it's just part of the routine.

If you've been thinking about it, use code CHALENE for a discount. And before you buy anything in this category, look up the peer-reviewed research on red light therapy for skin — there's more of it than most people realize.

Step 3: The Barrier Cream Dermatologists Keep Recommending (It Costs $12)

After you apply your active for the night, you seal everything in with a barrier cream. Every single night, no exceptions.

I need to tell you how I found out about this one, because it's a whole thing.

After my facelift, I made the mistake of going back to tretinoin way too soon. My skin completely freaked out. I developed contact dermatitis — my face was red, hot, swollen, painful. I was calling every doctor I knew on a weekend in full panic mode convinced I had destroyed my facelift.

Every single one of them said the same thing.

Vanicream.

That's it. Not some proprietary post-surgery miracle product. Not something that costs $200. Vanicream. Twelve dollars at the drugstore. The dermatologists, the plastic surgeon, the NP, the hormone clinician… all of them. Same answer.

It's fragrance-free, formulated to repair the skin barrier rather than just sit on top of it, and gentle enough that even a post-surgery face in full revolt will tolerate it. Once your barrier is intact and healthy, your actives work better, your skin holds moisture, and you stop reacting to everything in your environment.

Slather it on every night after your active. Don't skip this step. It's the most boring and most important part of the whole routine.

Why Your 10-Step Routine May Actually Be Making Things Worse

I know it feels counterintuitive. More products feels like more effort, more care, more results.

But here's what actually happens when you stack too many actives and too many products on midlife skin: you keep it in a constant state of low-grade irritation. And skin that's busy trying to calm down and heal itself cannot simultaneously rebuild. You're blocking the very process you're trying to trigger.

More is not better here. Consistent is better. Targeted is better. Three steps that address the actual foundation is better than twelve steps that address the symptom.

The women I know with the most beautiful skin in their 70s and 80s? When you ask them what they use, the answer is almost always three products. Three simple, consistent products. Every time.

What This Routine Actually Costs (Because the Math Will Surprise You)
  • Gentle cleanser: varies, roughly $20-30 a month
  • Tretinoin: less than $25 a month
  • Estriol cream: approximately $25 a month the way I use it
  • Vanicream: $12, lasts months

You're looking at roughly $80-90 a month for a prescription-strength, clinically supported, foundation-rebuilding routine. I spent more than that on one serum I used for six months that did nothing.

And for collagen support from the inside, I add Organifi collagen to my morning coffee daily. Flavorless, dissolves completely, and use code CHALENE for 20% off. Topical plus ingestible collagen support together is where I've seen the biggest cumulative difference.

The Bottom Line

Your skin didn't fail you. The advice did.

Once estrogen declines, your skin needs a different strategy. Not more products. The right products, targeting the right problems, at the foundation level.

The menopause skincare routine that actually rebuilds your skin:

  • A gentle, barrier-protecting cleanser
  • Two prescription actives alternated nightly: tretinoin and estriol cream
  • Vanicream barrier cream every single night

Start with your cleanser and Vanicream if you're not ready to tackle the prescriptions yet. Get comfortable with the routine. Then book a consult at MIDI Health and ask about tretinoin and estriol. The clinicians there know exactly what you're talking about and they're ready to help.

Your skin can get better. Not back to 30 — better than that. Better in a way that makes sense for the body you actually have right now.

WHY 10,000 STEPS ISN'T WORKING AFTER 40 (AND WHAT TO DO INSTEAD)

I lost 5 pounds in a month by walking less.

Not less often. Not less consistently. Just… differently. And I hadn't changed my food, I hadn't added a new workout, I hadn't done anything dramatic. I just stopped obsessing over my step count and started paying attention to the quality and variety of my movement instead.

If you've been hitting your 10,000 steps every single day and wondering why the scale isn't moving, why your midsection looks the same, why your body just isn't responding the way it used to… this is the post you needed to find. Walking for weight loss after 40 is not broken. The 10,000 step rule is.

Let me explain exactly what's happening in your body, why the old approach stops working in midlife, and what to do instead.

Where the 10,000 Step Rule Actually Came From

This one's going to make you feel a little better about yourself… because the number has nothing to do with science.

The 10,000 step goal originated in Japan in the 1960s as a marketing name for a pedometer. The device was called the Manpo-kei, which literally translates to “10,000 step meter.” It was catchy, and it stuck. And somehow over the next several decades it migrated from a Japanese marketing campaign into global health gospel.

The actual research tells a different story. Health benefits from walking start to appear around 4,400 steps a day. By about 7,500 steps, those benefits largely plateau. So if you've been grinding toward 10,000 or 12,000 or 15,000 steps and feeling guilty every day you fall short… you've been chasing a number that a pedometer company invented.

That guilt? Completely unnecessary.

Why 10,000 Steps Stops Working After 40

Here's where it gets specific to us.

In your 30s, adding more movement generally produces more results. Your hormones are relatively stable, your metabolism responds predictably, and the simple math of more movement equals more calories burned holds reasonably well.

After 40, and especially once you're in perimenopause or menopause, that equation breaks down. Here's why.

Your body is remarkably good at adapting. Once it gets used to walking 10,000 steps at a consistent pace, it becomes more efficient at doing exactly that. More efficient means fewer calories burned for the same effort. Your metabolism essentially gets comfortable with your routine and stops responding to it.

I know this firsthand. There was a period where I was doing 20,000 steps a day. Pushing hard, tracking obsessively, convinced that if I just walked more I would see changes. My metabolism slowed. My results stalled. I was exhausted and getting nowhere. More of the same thing wasn't the answer. Different was.

There's also a cortisol piece that most people miss entirely.

Excessive walking, especially when you're already stressed, under-eating, or not sleeping well, raises cortisol. And elevated cortisol in midlife is directly tied to visceral fat accumulation around the midsection. So the very thing you're doing to try to lose your belly can be feeding it, if you're overdoing it while your stress load is already high. If you want to understand that mechanism in more depth, this post on cortisol belly breaks it all down.

The NEAT Factor Nobody's Talking About

This is the piece that changed everything for me, and most women have never heard of it.

Of the total calories you burn in a day, structured exercise like your workout or your 10,000 steps accounts for only about 5%. Just 5%. Meanwhile, something called NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) accounts for up to 15% of your daily calorie burn. NEAT is just… movement. Not exercise. Pacing while you're on the phone. Standing instead of sitting. Walking to get your coffee instead of rolling your chair three feet. Tapping your feet. Fidgeting.

The woman who takes a 45-minute walk and then sits at her desk for 8 hours is burning significantly fewer calories than the woman who skips the formal walk but moves consistently throughout her entire day.

This was genuinely eye-opening for me. I stopped thinking about exercise as the thing that burns calories and started thinking about how much I was moving (or not moving) during the other 23 hours of my day. I got a walking pad for my desk. I stopped sitting while I was scrolling my phone. I paced during calls. None of it felt like exercise. All of it added up.

The goal isn't more steps on your tracker. The goal is less sitting.

What Actually Works: Interval Walking (Also Called Japanese Walking)

So if steady-state step counting stops working… what does?

Interval walking. Sometimes called Japanese walking. And it's exactly what it sounds like: alternating between a comfortable pace and a challenging pace within the same walk.

The protocol is simple. Three minutes at an easy, conversational pace. Three minutes pushing hard enough that talking becomes uncomfortable. Alternate back and forth for 30 minutes, about four times a week. That's it.

Here's why this works when 10,000 steady steps don't.

Your body can't adapt to interval walking the way it adapts to a consistent pace. The variation keeps your metabolism guessing. The harder intervals recruit fast-twitch muscle fibers that steady walking completely ignores, and those fibers are exactly what we start losing in midlife. Keeping them active supports strength, agility, and the kind of metabolic function that actually burns fat at rest.

Research on interval walking specifically shows improvements in leg and knee strength between 13 and 17%, along with measurable boosts in post-workout metabolism. You're not just burning calories during the walk. Your body keeps burning at an elevated rate after you finish.

And the cortisol piece matters here too. Interval walking is intense enough to create a training stimulus but not so prolonged or brutal that it spikes cortisol the way a 90-minute grinding cardio session does. It's the sweet spot for midlife women: challenging enough to work, short enough to recover from.

I have a full YouTube video walking you through the Japanese walking protocol if you want to see exactly how I do it.

How to Start This Week

You don't need a new app, a new device, or a gym membership. Here's exactly how to get going.

Warm up for 3 to 5 minutes at an easy pace to get your joints moving and your heart rate up gently.

Then alternate: 3 minutes easy, 3 minutes hard. Repeat that cycle five times for a 30-minute session. The easy pace should feel comfortable enough that you could hold a conversation. The hard pace should feel like you definitely could not.

Cool down for a few minutes at the end. That's the whole workout.

Four times a week is the sweet spot. On the other days, focus on moving throughout the day rather than logging a formal session. A walk here, some pacing there, avoiding long stretches of sitting. That's your NEAT work and it matters just as much.

A few things to avoid when you're starting out:

Going all-out on the hard intervals. This isn't sprinting and it's not supposed to be miserable. Challenging is the goal, not destroyed.

Trying to also hit 10,000 steps on your interval days. That defeats the purpose. The stimulus is the point, not the number.

Stressing about the tracker. Honestly, I stopped wearing my tracking ring for over a month just to break the obsession. The results were better without it. Stronger, more capable, a few pounds lighter, and none of the daily guilt.

What to Add if You Want to Accelerate Your Results

A couple of things pair really well with interval walking for midlife women specifically.

A weighted vest adds resistance without changing your joints the way running does. Even a light vest increases the demand on your muscles and bones during a walk, which supports both fat loss and bone density. Start light and build up gradually.

Sleep and magnesium. This one sounds unrelated until you understand that poor sleep spikes cortisol, and elevated cortisol directly undermines fat loss in midlife. Magnesium is one of the most common deficiencies in women over 40 and it directly impacts sleep quality, cortisol regulation, and insulin sensitivity. I take Magnesium Breakthrough from BiOptimizers every night before bed. It has multiple forms of magnesium in one capsule, which matters because different forms serve different functions in the body. They also offer a 365-day guarantee which, as a former supplement skeptic, meant a lot to me. You can get a discount through my link.

And if you want to understand why your midsection specifically isn't responding to cardio the way it used to, this post on visceral fat and cortisol belly explains the full picture. The interval walking strategy connects directly to what's happening hormonally, and reading both together gives you the complete framework.

The Bottom Line

10,000 steps isn't a health standard. It's a 1960s marketing slogan that somehow became everyone's daily guilt trip.

What actually works after 40 is smarter movement, not more movement. Interval walking four times a week. More NEAT throughout the day. Less obsessive step counting. Lifting with progressive overload to build the muscle that elevates your metabolism at rest. And protecting your sleep so cortisol stays low enough for any of it to work.

I lost 5 pounds by walking less and differently. Not because I found a shortcut… but because I finally stopped following advice that wasn't designed for this version of my body.

You can do the same thing.

Love you, mean it. Chalene

In this episode, Brock Johnson  breaks down my exact system for generating over 10 million Instagram views every month. He shared the real numbers behind my results, including 12.8M views in December, 16.9M views in January, and 13.6M views in February, and explained the core principle behind the strategy: the more you post, the more opportunities you create for growth and views.

Brock walks through the structure of my posting system, including how often he posts to the feed, the mix of Reels and carousels, and the different types of content He publishes. Brock explains why he focuses on “base hits” instead of trying to make every post go viral, and why you can never predict which piece of content will take off.

Brock also shares the operational side of the system—how he  plans, batch, schedule, and reviews content using Metricool. The 5 Money Mistakes Midlife Women Make (And How to Fix Them)

I pulled out my credit card at checkout not long ago and it declined.

There was money in the account. It was just a processing glitch that fixed itself in about 30 seconds. But in those 30 seconds… I was back. Back to the season of our lives where Bret and I were buried in debt and that exact scenario was a very real possibility every time I paid for anything.

That feeling doesn't just disappear when your financial situation improves. It lives in you.

So when I asked my Instagram audience what their greatest fear was about getting older… I expected to hear things like losing their looks, health declining, people they love getting sick. It was money. Specifically, outliving it.

That's exactly why I brought Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche onto The Chalene Show. Because if anyone understands that fear from the inside out, it's her. She was nearly $300,000 in debt in her late twenties. She spent her 30th birthday sleeping in her childhood bed thinking she had more money babysitting at 14 than she did right now. She's a New York Times bestselling author now, she's been on Netflix, and she's helped millions of women drop the shame and actually get good with money.

She broke down the five biggest money mistakes midlife women make and I want to give you a peek at what we covered… but honestly, you need to hear her say it.

Read until the end for the list of books I recommend (and have read that have helped lead to my financial success).

Mistake 1: Your Mindset Is Running Your Money

Before any spreadsheet, any budget, any savings account… your mindset has to shift first. Because your money will never do more than what your mind will allow. Tiffany is clear that for most midlife women this isn't a competence problem. It's a confidence problem. And she makes the case in a way that is genuinely hard to argue with. Listen to how she explains it in the episode because it will stick with you.

Mistake 2: Nobody's Actually Managing the Money

Money comes in. Money goes out. And most of us have no real system governing what happens in between. Tiffany has a four-account framework that takes about 24 hours to set up and essentially budgets for you without requiring you to budget. She calls it “split it before you get it” and once she explains it, you'll wonder why nobody taught you this years ago.

Mistake 3: You Don't Know Your Noodle Budget

Do you know what your actual bare-minimum monthly number is? Not what you normally spend. What you need to survive if things got hard fast. Most women don't know this number and it's one of the most important things you can have ready before you need it. Tiffany explains exactly how to figure it out and when to use it.

Mistake 4: Earning Without Growing

Bringing in money and growing money are two different skills entirely. If your money isn't working for you somewhere… it's dying. Tiffany walks through exactly where to start investing even if you feel like you don't have enough, don't know enough, or think it's too late. It's not too late. She started from negative $300,000.

Mistake 5: No Protection Plan

This is the one nobody wants to think about until they have to. Tiffany lost her husband suddenly at 41. He never made more than $60,000 a year. Because of the financial decisions they had made together, he left her nearly a million dollars. The protect step isn't about being morbid. It's about making sure the people you love are taken care of no matter what.

Go Listen to the Full Episode

I'm giving you the outline but Tiffany gives you the how. The specific steps, the real talk about shame, the practical tools she's used with millions of women… it's all in the episode. This is one of those conversations that hits differently depending on where you are right now, and I've had women tell me they've listened to it more than once.

Listen to the full episode here.

And if you want the step-by-step companion to everything Tiffany covers, her book Get Good With Money is exactly what it sounds like; a clear path forward. Here's my full list of finance books worth reading if you're ready to go deeper.

In this episode, Brock Johnson breaks down how small YouTube channels can realistically make $50 per day in 2026. He sits down with Sean Cannell to discuss why the common belief that you need millions of views to make money on YouTube is misleading, and how even smaller creators can build meaningful income with the right strategy.

They start by explaining the math behind $50 per day, including how YouTube RPM works and why many creators misunderstand how ad revenue is calculated. Sean walks through realistic RPM ranges for small channels and shows how different niches can dramatically affect earnings potential.

They then dive into monetization strategies beyond AdSense, focusing on affiliate marketing and why it can generate income faster for smaller channels. They discuss how creators can set up simple affiliate systems, how many sales it actually takes to reach $50 per day, and why SaaS affiliate programs are particularly powerful due to recurring commissions.

Another major theme of the episode is choosing the right YouTube niche and attracting higher-value audiences. We discuss how advertiser demand, viewer demographics, and topic selection influence RPM and long-term channel profitability.

Brock and Sean also explore the concept of viewer intent — one of the most important factors for turning views into revenue — and the types of videos that naturally convert viewers into buyers, such as product reviews, comparisons, and “best of” lists.

Finally, they bring everything together with practical advice for creators with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, including what videos to start making immediately and the fastest path to earning your first $50 day on YouTube.

WHY YOU CAN'T LOSE FAT IN PERIMENOPAUSE (AND THE 5 MISTAKES MAKING IT WORSE)

I have talked to thousands of women who are doing everything right. Eating less. Working out more. Cutting carbs. Walking every day. And still… nothing is moving. Or worse, things are moving in the wrong direction.

If that's you, I want you to hear this clearly: your body is not broken. You are not failing. You are just following rules that were written for a version of your body that no longer exists.

Fat loss in perimenopause is a completely different game. The same strategies that worked in your 30s can actively work against you now. And until you understand what actually changed and why, you'll keep spinning your wheels doing more of what stopped working.

Here are the five mistakes I see most often, and exactly how to fix them.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Mistake 1: You're Eating Far Too Little

This one feels counterintuitive because everything we've been told about weight loss comes down to eat less, move more. So when the weight isn't moving, the instinct is to cut more. Eat less. Restrict harder.

And in perimenopause, that instinct will backfire almost every time.

When you drop calories too low, your body doesn't go after fat first. It goes after muscle. And muscle is the single most important metabolic asset you have right now. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, more fatigue, and a body that's even more resistant to fat loss than it was before you started restricting. You've essentially made the problem worse by trying to solve it.

The other piece is fasting. Intermittent fasting can be a useful tool but it has a very specific window where it helps versus hurts in perimenopause and menopause. Push it too far and cortisol spikes, muscle breaks down, and your hormones get more chaotic, not less. Here's a full breakdown of the intermittent fasting mistakes that are most common in this season.

Fix it:

  • Find your maintenance calories and reduce by no more than 250 per day. That's it.
  • Prioritize protein at every single meal. Front-load it if you can, aim for 25 to 30 grams first thing.
  • If you fast, keep it moderate. Extreme fasting windows are working against your hormones right now.
Mistake 2: You're Doing All Cardio and No Strength Training

I love cardio. Zone 2 is part of my daily life. But if cardio is the only tool in your kit right now… you're missing the thing that actually changes your body composition in midlife.

Muscle is your metabolism. It's what burns calories at rest, what shapes your body, what keeps your bones strong, and what makes everything else in your fitness routine work better. After 40, we start losing muscle mass at an accelerated rate unless we're actively working to build and maintain it. That loss is one of the primary drivers of the metabolic slowdown that makes fat loss feel impossible.

Strength training is not optional in this season. It is the strategy. Here's exactly how to think about weights versus cardio after 40.

And while we're on cardio… if you've been grinding toward 10,000 steps a day and feeling like it's stopped working, this post on why 10,000 steps isn't working in midlife and the Japanese walking protocol that actually does will change how you think about your daily movement entirely.

Fix it:

  • Lift heavy enough to nearly reach fatigue in 10 to 15 reps. If it's easy, it's not enough.
  • Strength train at least 3 days a week with progressive overload. Mix your reps, weights, and pacing.
  • Build total body muscle, not just abs. Your legs and posterior chain are your biggest metabolic drivers.

Mistake 3: You're Ignoring Stress and Cortisol

Stress is the sneakiest fat loss blocker in midlife and the one most women don't take seriously enough because it doesn't feel like a nutrition or fitness problem. It feels like life.

But here's what's actually happening in your body. When cortisol stays chronically elevated, it signals your body to store fat specifically in the midsection. It spikes your hunger hormones. It tanks your sleep quality. And poor sleep raises cortisol further, which stores more fat, which disrupts sleep more. It's a loop and it will override almost every good nutrition and exercise decision you make.

This is why you can be doing everything right and still not seeing results. The cortisol and belly fat connection goes deep, and I broke down the full science here.

One thing I've added to my own routine for sleep and cortisol regulation is Magnesium Breakthrough from BiOptimizers. Magnesium deficiency is extremely common in women over 40 and it directly impacts sleep quality, cortisol levels, and insulin sensitivity. Multiple forms in one capsule, 365-day guarantee, and it's one of the few supplements where I genuinely noticed a difference fast.

Fix it:

  • Protect your sleep above almost everything else. Even 30 to 60 extra minutes makes a measurable difference.
  • Identify the stressors you actually can control and start removing them. Not all stress is unavoidable.
  • Cut late-night caffeine and alcohol. Both crush sleep quality and keep cortisol elevated overnight.
Mistake 4: You're Chasing Quick Fixes

I get it. When nothing is working and you've been trying for months, the promise of one thing that will finally crack the code is incredibly appealing. A supplement, an injectable, a 10-day cleanse, a specific macro ratio that someone swears changed their life.

None of them work alone. And the influencers selling “one thing fixes everything” are not being straight with you.

What actually works in perimenopause is a stack of unglamorous basics done consistently. Sleep. Stress management. Strength training. Protein. Movement throughout the day. And for many women, a conversation with a hormone specialist about whether HRT is appropriate because it can be a genuine game changer for fat loss, energy, and body composition, and it's an option well into your 70s, not just the early years of menopause. I use MIDI Health for this and it's the most seamless experience I've found. All 50 states, most insurance accepted, and their clinicians actually know menopause.

Fix it:

  • Stack the basics first. Sleep, stress, strength, and protein. In that order of priority.
  • Talk to a hormone specialist if you haven't already. MIDI Health is where I'd start.
  • Give your strategy at least 90 days before you decide it isn't working. Real change is slow and that's not a flaw.
Mistake 5: Your Diet Is Too Extreme

Keto. Extended fasting. Strict macro counting. Elimination protocols. Any of these can work in the right context for the right person. All of them can backfire badly in perimenopause when pushed too hard.

Here's why. When you take your body to an extreme, it reads that as a threat. Cortisol goes up, metabolism slows down, and your body holds onto fat more aggressively because it genuinely believes it's in a survival situation. That stubborn belly fat isn't your body betraying you. It's your body protecting you from what looks like a famine.

The answer is not more extreme. The answer is more sustainable. A moderate calorie deficit, consistent protein, progressive strength training, and a way of eating you can actually maintain without white-knuckling it through every meal.

Fix it:

  • Moderate deficit plus protein plus muscle. That's the whole formula.
  • Structure your meals simply and consistently. Decision fatigue around food raises cortisol. Keep it repeatable.
  • If you're fasting, keep the window reasonable. Your hormones will thank you.
The Bottom Line

Your body isn't broken. You're not failing. You're in a season where the old rules genuinely don't apply anymore and where smart, consistent, hormone-aware strategies beat extreme ones every single time.

Build muscle. Manage stress. Sleep like it's your job. Eat enough protein. And get the right support around your hormones.

Fat loss in perimenopause isn't about discipline. It's about working with your biology instead of fighting it.

If you want a program built specifically for this season, Phase It is exactly that. Nutrition, fat loss, fitness, and hormone support designed for midlife women. Not a generic plan with your age slapped on it. The real thing.

And if you want to get started moving today, here are three workouts to go right now:

You ever hear people talking about peptides and think… what even are those?

Are they the secret to beating belly fat, boosting brain power, or skipping meditation altogether? Can they help with menopausal symptoms? And honestly… who has the budget for all this longevity stuff—supplements, hormones, and now peptides?

I had to get the answers from the real expert: Dr. Elizabeth Yurth, double board-certified in physical medicine, rehab, and longevity medicine. She’s been in this world forever and has seen it all—good, bad, and “wild west.”

Here’s the scoop…

Table of Contents

Toggle

What Are Peptides Anyway?

They're basically tiny chains of amino acids—smaller than proteins, bigger than nothing… and your body naturally makes thousands of them.

Think of them like your body’s little messengers. They tell your cells: heal here, boost this, fix that. Unlike hormones, which can scatter signals everywhere, peptides are more targeted.

Some are made naturally by your body, like BPC-157 (from your gut—hello, healing!) and thymic peptides (from your thymus gland). Others are synthetic, designed as drugs.

The big takeaway? Peptides aren’t foreign chemicals. They’re often molecules your body already knows how to use… but we stop making enough of them as we age.

Why You Might Actually Need Peptides

Here’s what Dr. Yurth sees in her patients:

  • BPC-157: Supports gut health, joint repair, and metabolic function. Oral supplements exist, but injections work better for tissue repair.
  • Thymic peptides (like thymosin alpha-1): Key for immune function. As your thymus shrinks with age, your immune system slows down. These peptides help wake it back up.
  • Growth hormone secretagogues (CJC, Tesamorelin): Encourage your pituitary to release GH naturally. Keeps muscles, bones, and skin healthier.

Other benefits? Some peptides help with inflammation, visceral fat, cognition, skin health, and even hair regrowth.

GLP-1 Agonists: Not Just for Weight Loss

Everyone’s talking about GLP-1 agonists—yes, the same drugs trending on TikTok and in gyms.

Here’s the truth: they’re not just weight loss drugs. GLP-1 receptors are all over your body: immune system, brain, liver. Proper dosing can improve immune function, glucose metabolism, and overall longevity…without making you lose your appetite or muscle.

But here’s the reality check… dosing matters. And if you have a history of eating disorders, this isn’t a casual supplement. You need a physician guiding your use.

Safety First: The Internet is the Wild West

Not all peptides are created equal. Most “research peptides” online are labeled ‘not for human use.’ Some even contain contaminants like arsenic, lead, or mercury.

The safest approach?

  • Work with a board-certified physician who knows peptides inside and out. (Midi Health does is a legit prescriber of GLPs).
  • Make sure your prescription comes from a certified compounding pharmacy.
  • Ask about the source, sterility, and testing. If your bottle doesn’t have your name on it, it’s likely repackaged from a research chemical.

Dr. Yurth calls it: cheap shortcuts today = potential health disaster tomorrow.

Top Peptides for Women Over 40

If you’re over 40, perimenopausal or menopausal, here’s a short list that can be game changers:

  • GLP-1 Agonists: Metabolic health, inflammation, longevity.
  • BPC-157: Gut, joint, and muscle repair. Safe orally or injectable.
  • Thymosin Alpha-1: Immune system support. Especially if autoimmune markers are creeping up.
  • Growth Hormone Secretagogues (CJC, Tesamorelin): Support muscle, bones, skin, and repair.
  • GHK-Copper: Collagen, skin integrity, hair growth. Topical or injectable cycles. (Here's my fav topical lotion with peptides).

Remember… you don’t need everything at once. Peptides can be cycled and tailored to your needs.

The Bottom Line
  • Peptides are powerful, but they’re tools, not magic bullets.
  • Skip the internet shortcuts. Work with a trusted physician.
  • Start with what you’re losing with age. Focus on safety and effectiveness.

You haven’t done anything wrong… you’re just navigating a crazy, confusing world of longevity hype. Peptides can help—but only when done the right way.

Want to dive deeper into which peptides actually help midlife women? Check out the full conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Yurth on the latest episode of The Chalene Show.

Love you, mean it,

I’ve spent a small fortune trying to regrow my hair… and let me tell you, I’ve wasted a ton of money. Because thinning hair after 40? Yeah, it's a thing. Like crepey skin, unpredictable periods, and a few other peri+menopausal symptoms I'd like to kick to the curb.

But the hair..that's a big one for a woman's confidence. So, I’ve done the research, tested the products, and yes… I’m sharing my personal experiences so you can save yourself time, money and discomfort.

Spoiler alert: most of the stuff on the market is a scam.

But the good news? The things that actually work are affordable, practical, and science-backed.

When Hair Changes Start After 40

For me, it all started in perimenopause. Suddenly, my hair refused to cooperate.

  • More product didn’t help.
  • Volume? Gone.
  • Styling? Impossible.

I kept trying to cover it up, but it just wouldn’t behave like it once did.

The $90 Billion Hair Loss Industry

Hair regrowth is a $90 billion industry, and we’re all buying into products that don’t deliver. Gummies, serums, capsules… I’ve tried them all.

Lesson learned: look at the science first, not the packaging.

Why Hair Loss Feels So Personal

Our hair shapes how we see ourselves. It makes us feel youthful, feminine, beautiful. When it starts to thin… it hits deep.

You look in the mirror and think: “Is this really me?”

The Two Types of Hair Loss

Hair loss isn’t one-size-fits-all. There are two main types:

  1. Shedding – temporary and often stress-related.
  2. Genetic thinning (androgenetic alopecia) – inherited, progressive, and requires a different approach.
What Hair Shedding Really Means

Think of your scalp as a factory… and hair follicles are the workers.

When stressed, sick, or nutrient-deprived, your follicles go on strike. The hair falls out, but the machinery is still there.

This can happen after:

  • Major stress events
  • Surgery
  • Illness
  • Nutrient deficiencies

The shedding usually appears 2–3 months later, which is why it feels like it comes out of nowhere.

Signs of Genetic Hair Thinning

Genetic hair loss isn’t about clumps in your brush—it’s about follicles shrinking over time.

  • Your part widens.
  • Hair looks thinner on top or at the crown.
  • Front hairline may appear fine, but overall density decreases.

This is why genetics are key… and why treatment needs to be targeted.

The Ferritin Blind Spot

Before buying anything, check your ferritin levels.

  • Ferritin = iron storage.
  • Low levels can cause hair shedding.
  • An easy blood test tells you what your scalp really needs.

Don’t guess… test first.

Hair Treatments That Don’t Work

Let’s be blunt: some products are a waste of money.

  • Rosemary oil – may soften hair, but no regrowth science.
  • Hair oiling – can clog follicles, create inflammation.
  • Biotin supplements – overhyped unless you’re severely deficient.

If it doesn’t have credible research behind it, skip it.

Treatments That Actually Work

Here’s the science-backed stuff that works:

  • Ketoconazole shampoo – medically prescribed, blocks DHT locally.
  • Minoxidil (5%) – gold standard. Opens blood vessels, extends hair growth, promotes regrowth. Twice daily, consistently.
  • Spironolactone – blocks androgen receptors, protects follicles from DHT. Often paired with minoxidil.
  • Red light therapy / PRP / peptides – pricier but effective when combined with foundational treatments.

I like this red light, and you get a huge discount with code: chalene

Consistency is key… and combining treatments gives the best results.

Your Hair Regrowth Action Plan
  1. Check ferritin – aim for >70.
  2. Start minoxidil – 5% twice daily.
  3. Treat your scalp like skin – wash regularly, avoid irritating products.
  4. Be skeptical – influencers sell products, but always check the science.
  5. See a dermatologist – get to the root cause before committing to a plan.
  6. I'm loving OneSkin's hair serum – you might too.

Hair thinning after 40 isn’t a personal failure. It’s biology, stress, hormones, and genetics… but there are things that work. Follow the plan, be consistent, and don’t get scammed by every trendy product.

You haven’t done anything wrong… now it’s time to do something different.

Oh- if you use any of my affiliate links, I may earn a small commission. Order from wherever you like, but do check for discounts with my links. I like to get you hookups!

Love you, mean it,

How To Grow Your Glutes After 50

Walking Isn’t Enough: How To Grow Your Glutes After 50

You ever look in the mirror and think… will my butt ever be round again?

I get it. I’ve been there. Lunges, squats, all the things… and my booty just kept flattening. It’s easy to assume, “Oh, genetics… aging… blah, blah, blah.” But here’s the thing… muscles are muscles, and they respond if you train them right.

And yes, that means strength training. Walking alone isn’t gonna cut it — even brisk walking only fires about 32% of your glutes. That’s basically snoozing on the job.

So today, we’re talking how to wake up your glutes, protect your back and knees, and actually grow a booty after 50.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Why This Matters More Than Vanity

Glutes aren’t just about looking good in jeans. Weak glutes = weak engine.

  • Your back, knees, hips, ankles… they all compensate
  • Back pain skyrockets with age if your glutes are lazy
  • Metabolism slows down — less muscle, fewer calories burned.

Science backs this up: stronger glutes = higher metabolic function, better hip stability, reduced risk of chronic back pain.

Glute Amnesia: The Sneaky Reason Your Booty Isn’t Working

Here’s the thing… sometimes your glutes have forgotten how to fire. Physical therapists call it glute amnesia.

  • If you’ve been sitting a lot, your brain-muscle connection weakens.
  • You try to squeeze your butt… and it feels like it’s not even there.
  • That’s why lunges, squats, and walking alone often don’t work — your glutes are asleep, and your back or quads take over.

The good news? The five exercises I’m about to share wake your glutes back up, reconnect your brain to your muscles, and actually build that round, strong booty.

The Five Exercises That Actually Work

I’m keeping this simple and home-friendly… because most of us don’t have a garage full of gym equipment.

1. Romanian Deadlift (RDL)

  • Soft knees, hips hinge back, glutes pull your upper body up.
  • Picture standing next to a car door… push your butt back to close it.
  • Focus on stretch and squeeze, not touching your toes.

2. Hip Thrust

  • Shoulder blades on the couch, weights on thighs, posterior pelvic tilt.
  • Tuck the chin slightly… curl under like an ice cream scooper.
  • Studies show hip thrusts grow glutes more than squats or deadlifts alone.

3. Bulgarian Split Squat

  • One leg forward, one leg on a couch/bench behind you.
  • Lean slightly forward to engage glutes; drive through the heel.
  • Perfect for single-leg strength and correcting imbalances.

4. Reverse Lunge

  • Step back, front leg does the work.
  • Tap a pillow if needed — easy on the knees.
  • Glutes light up without joint pain.

5. Glute-Focused Back Extension

  • Slide onto a ball or couch edge, hip bones slightly off.
  • Round upper back slightly, squeeze glutes at the top.
  • Focus on glutes, not erector spinae.

Pro Tip: Form over intensity. Small tweaks make a huge difference.

How Often & How Many
  • Lower body: three times a week
  • Upper body: twice a week
  • Sets: 3 each exercise
  • Reps: Enough to nearly reach muscle fatigue in 30–90 seconds
  • Focus on time under tension, not chasing a number
The Extras That Make a Difference
  • Nutrition: Adequate protein is non-negotiable.
  • Magnesium: Sleep, bone density, stress management — most of us are deficient. I love BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough (7 bioavailable forms, capsule + powder).
  • Collagen: Supports joints, skin, hair, nails. I get mine from Organifi — pure, immunity, brain blends.
Bottom Line

Your glutes are your engine. Wake them up, strengthen them, and your body will thank you — back, knees, metabolism, and yes, even your jeans.

Midlife isn’t your ending… it’s your after party. And your booty? Totally invited.

Love you, mean it!

In this episode, Brock Johnson breaks down how to tell if your Instagram account is actually “dead” and whether starting over is the right move in 2026. He walks through the real reasons accounts experience low engagement, slow growth, or declining reach, and how to diagnose whether the issue is your content, consistency, or strategy—not your account age.

Brock also explains when restarting or rebranding an Instagram account makes sense, and when it’s better to fix what you already have. He’ll cover benchmarks for engagement, the difference between a shadowban and normal low reach, and how to recover from common issues like inconsistent posting or past mistakes. This episode is designed to help you make a clear, informed decision about whether to rebuild, rebrand, or double down on your current account.

Ever look in the mirror and think… wait, what happened? Your hair is thinner, your skin is dry, your belly feels heavier, and your favorite supplements aren’t doing what they used to? Yeah… I’ve been there.

Time to ask if those supplements you’ve been taking for years are still helping or hurting you in midlife. Because what worked in your thirties or forties might now be causing bloating, dry skin, hair thinning, or even skewed lab results. Understanding which midlife supplements to rethink can save your health, energy, and sanity… and help you feel like yourself again.

Let’s break it down… the eight supplements (well, 7 plus one that's food-based) I had to stop taking—and why you might want to too.

Table of Contents

Toggle

1. Biotin (B7)

Hair thinning? Dry skin? Acne popping up like teen years all over again? Biotin might be to blame. Most hair supplements pack 300–20,000 mcg, way over what your body actually needs (20–30 mcg).

Too much B7 messes with B6, which helps build your skin’s barrier. The result? Skin can’t hold moisture, and acne shows up.

Pro tip: Biotin can also skew lab tests, especially thyroid and cardiac labs. Take it at least a week off before blood work and confirm deficiency before continuing.

2. Iron

Still taking iron even though you’re post-menopause? That old habit can actually create oxidative stress, aging your skin, dulling your energy, and impacting your cells.

Rule of thumb: Only supplement if tested deficient. Otherwise, your body’s handling extra iron like a traffic jam… and it’s not pretty.

3. Calcium

Calcium supplements are often taken for bone health—but without magnesium, vitamin D3, and K2, your body doesn’t know what to do with it. Extra calcium can deposit in arteries or kidneys.

Better approach: Lift heavy, eat nutrient-dense foods, get sunshine for vitamin D, and supplement wisely—not blindly.

4. DHEA

DHEA can boost energy—but it’s a hormone precursor. Taking it without monitoring can elevate testosterone and cause unwanted side effects: facial hair, cystic acne, thinning hair.

Key takeaway: Hormones are delicate. Work with a clinician, don’t DIY.

5. Energy Drinks & Stimulants

Caffeine shots, fat burners, “quick energy” drinks—they spike cortisol and mess with sleep. Perimenopause and menopause already stress your adrenal system. Extra caffeine = belly fat, sleep disruption, crankiness.

Better fix: 20–30 min walk, hydration, or mindful movement beats a caffeine spike any day.

6. Creatine Gummies

Creatine is fantastic for brain health and muscles, but gummies are underdosed and often loaded with sugar.

Smart choice: Use micronized creatine from a reputable company, and increase dosage gradually if needed.

7. Protein Powders

Powders are convenient but highly processed. Drinking your calories can leave you bloated and unsatisfied. Real food protein keeps you full and supports metabolism better.

Tip: Use powders sparingly. Prioritize lean, whole protein first.

8. Vitamin E

Topical E? Totally fine. Oral mega-doses? They can thin blood and store in fat/liver, causing easy bruising.

Better approach: Focus on skin barrier health. Castor oil + fragrance-free lotion = hydrated, plump skin without supplement overload. I'm addicted to OneSkin's face lotion, body lotion and SPF. Little trick, slather on your castor oil post shower when still damp. Them lock it in with OneSkin's body lotion!

My Rules for Midlife Supplements
  • Test, don’t guess. Work with a clinician who understands hormone and nutrient labs.
  • Less is often more. Your body doesn’t like excesses.
  • Food first. Supplements should complement—not replace—whole foods.
  • Quality matters. Avoid Amazon dupes; buy from trusted sources.

I want you to be cute, healthy, and powerful in midlife—without a cabinet full of pills that do more harm than good. This is your chance to simplify, optimize, and finally feel like yourself again.

Love you, mean it,
Chalene

P.S. When I post affiliate link, I gotta tell you that I may earn a small commission if you use them. Just know they often give you a discount too. I don't care where you buy from, but don't get your supplements off Amazon. They've got dupes and lots of expired products that may do more harm than good!

You walk every day… but is it enough?

Let’s be real. Both walking and rebounding lift your mood, get your heart pumping, and maybe even make you feel like a fitness goddess. But when it comes to burning fat? Only one of them has the research to back it up. Let's compare and break it down…

Table of Contents

Toggle

Rebounding: More Than Just a Trend

You’ve seen influencers rave about rebounders. “It detoxes! Builds muscle! Fixes your lymphatic system!” And you’re thinking… okay, but is this real, or just another gadget that ends up under my bed collecting dust?

Here’s the truth: 1–5 minutes of rebounding activates your lymphatic system, boosts circulation, and is low-impact on knees, ankles, and back.

It can strengthen muscles and bones, but don’t expect it to replace weightlifting if your goal is serious muscle gains. Most studies on rebounding also included strength training alongside it.

And the fun factor? Off the charts. From health bounces to marching, jogging, high knees, and even dancing, a rebounder can make cardio feel playful instead of painful.

Walking: Simple, Reliable, Science-Backed

Now let’s talk zone two walking. That’s walking long enough to get your heart rate up but low enough to chat comfortably, usually 30–60 minutes.

It’s easy, requires zero equipment, and you’ve been doing it your whole life. Walking improves cardiovascular health, supports fat burning, and gives you mental clarity — bonus if you’re brainstorming or recording a podcast like me.

Science loves walking. Rebounding? The research exists but is limited. Walking wins on consistency and accessibility.

The Real Weight Loss Mechanism

Here’s the truth bomb: weight loss is mostly about what you eat. Cardio is important, but over 40? Muscle is your secret weapon.

Walking doesn’t build muscle. Rebounding might slightly improve body composition, but real gains require resistance. Lift weights. Period. (Check out my fitness program Phase It, where I show you how to lift safely and effectively).

That said, if we’re comparing calories burned per minute, rebounding can be more intense. But most people don’t rebound for 60 minutes daily. Walking every day? That wins the long game.

Mix It Up for Maximum Results

I walk daily. It's my mental and physical reset. Then I sprinkle in 10–20 minutes of rebounding to spice things up, raise my heart rate, and avoid plateaus.

Rebounding is low-impact, fun, and versatile. It complements walking and strength training perfectly.

Before You Buy a Rebounder, Ask Yourself…
  • Where will it live? No space, no use.
  • Is it the right investment? Does it match your goals: cardio or strength?
  • Will I actually use it? Be honest.
  • How much time does setup take? Convenience equals consistency.
  • Am I solving a real problem, or buying hype? Don’t lie to yourself.

Answer these honestly… then decide.

Bottom Line

Walking is reliable, accessible, and science-backed. Rebounding is fun, versatile, and a great addition. Neither is magic for fat loss, but both can support your health when paired with strength training and smart eating.

Just move in a way that keeps you smiling, sweating a little (if ya like that kind of thing), and showing up for yourself.

Love you. Mean It.

Chalene

🎯Prompts:

This is a Trial Reel ChatGPT Prompt:

“Generate 50 different versions of 1–3 sentence on-screen text blocks for Instagram Trial Reels.

Each text block should explicitly mention that this is a trial reel and encourage interaction (follow, comment, guess, pause, tap, or think).

The tone should be casual, confident, slightly playful, and not salesy.

Avoid emojis, hashtags, and calls to “link in bio.”

Some prompts should:

– Call out that the viewer doesn’t follow me (yet)

– Reference the algorithm showing this anyway

– Invite guessing, curiosity, or self-identification

– Lightly tease or challenge the viewer

Output as a numbered list from 1–50.”

Quick Quotes and Tips ChatGPT Prompt:

“Generate 50 different 1–3 sentence on-screen text blocks for Instagram Trial Reels.

Each text block should feel like my own voice and represent quick tips, stats, short stories, blunt truths, phrases I often say, mini-anecdotes, or quotable lines I’d realistically say on camera.

Tone: direct, confident, slightly opinionated, no fluff, no emojis, no hashtags, not salesy.

These are standalone insights, not calls to action.

Write them as if they’re pulled straight from my brain or past content—concise, scroll-stopping, and practical.”
