It's entirely possible that when we act in a way that reflects good character, it can enrich the faith of those around us. Likewise, having bad character traits can leave others with a sour taste, and can even be a detriment to the faith of those around us.⁠

Imam al Ghazali goes over eight character traits in-depth to explore how to deconstruct our flaws and reconstruct ourselves as friends who support one another, hide the mistakes of one another, help each other improve, praise each other, and build a relationship free of burdening one another.⁠

Heartwork: the next story in Surah Kahf that Allah gives us, the story of the two men and the gardens, demonstrates how the actions of believers lead to heavenly bliss, while the actions of those who are disbelieving and ungrateful to Allah only lead to disappointment and failure.⁠

Tonight's session of Heartwork explores two themes that are essential to the heart of a believer: how to develop reliance upon Allah, and the detrimental effects of gazing upon the wealth and riches of this world.⁠

We concluded the introduction to Surah Kahf last week during our second session, speaking about the nature of the Quran in our lives - a guidance, a means of reminder of reward and consequence depending on how someone lives their lives.

Tonight's session, we'll move into the first of four major themes that we find in this surah: the story of the young men who escaped their community for the sake of their faith and took refuge in a cave.

We introduced Surah Kahf last week during our first session, speaking about the context of revelation during the life of the Prophet ﷺ.⁠

Tonight we continue with a discussion of the introduction of the surah, a preface that Allah gives to the main passages found within the chapter, priming the reader to understand certain key principles that will help them understand what they're about to read, and ultimately will help them understand moments in their life.

Tonight's first session after our Ramadan series begins tonight, as we explore another milestone chapter of the Quran - Surah al Kahf, the chapter of The Cave. The Prophet ﷺ narrated a number of hadith about the virtues of Surah Kahf, teaching us that for the person who recites it on Friday, they will be immune from trials (small and large), and they will be the bearers of a light that will illuminate for and from them from week to week.⁠

The virtues of this Surah are accompanied by the timeless lessons that are contained within it. The detailed explanation of the meanings of the Quran have identified four major sections/themes to this Surah, each of which carry its own specific blessed meanings and benefit for the reader.⁠

Tonight’s session will be part 3 of our conversation on the different parts of Ramadan - the days of mercy, the days of forgiveness, and the days of salvation from the fire.

Everyone has different focuses in life - Ramadan teaches us what our focus should be: on our relationship with Allah and for a successful status in the afterlife.

In this verse, Allah references three groups of people - the first of which we try to belong to, and the latter two that we desperately avoid being a part of. The descriptions that Allah gave each group is short-yet-far-reaching, with layers of depth that we can uncover through discussion.⁠

Heartwork tonight will focus on a disease that is an absence of remembrance, a void in God-consciousness: ghaflah. We all know the disappointment of forgetting something important - imagine how frequently we forget Allah, and how we feel when we come upon that realization.⁠

⁠

While we mentally know that our faith is the most important element of our lives, our heart may not always reflect that. The Prophet ﷺ warned us of the danger of falling into spiritual forgetfulness when he said, "The example of the one who remembers their Lord, in comparison to the one who does not remember their Lord, is that of a living person compared to a dead one."⁠

The status of a spiritual heart being filled with life or being void and dead is directly related to how much we remember Allah. Battling this disease, ghaflah, is critical. What are its symptoms? Where does it come from? And how can we treat it?⁠
