 Can burlesque become a tool for postpartum body confidence?

This week I'm delighted to be joined by Cat LaCohie and we're talking everything body confidence.

We explore the reality of societal pressures that many women face after pregnancy, and how Cat uses burlesque as a medium to reconnect women with their bodies and embrace self-love.

But this episode is not just about burlesque.

It's about the journey of self-discovery, and the transformative power of reclaiming one's identity. Cat shares how embodying powerful characters through burlesque helped her reclaim her strength during moments of self-doubt.

She challenges the notion of seeking constant approval from others, emphasizing the value of self-worth and the joy of being in the company of the right people.

As our conversation draws to a close, Cat sheds light on the importance of being vocal about who you are, and how it helps filter out those who don't belong in your life.

She shares her inspiring journey, from building her own website to teaching burlesque classes, and how she learned to say 'I'm amazing and you're welcome' instead of apologizing for her actions.

The message of this episode is clear: Individuality, self-love and authenticity can be empowering tools to navigate through life's challenges.

You can find Cat in all the cool  places.

Her website
Facebook
Instagram and her other insta!

And if Cat has really made you think "Hey, I should give this a shot" then head
here for online classes.

Just a  reminder that HPNB now only has 5 billing cycles!

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering.

This means you can sign up after your first child, use the program and recover and then still have access after giving birth to child 2 and 3!

None of this "pay X amount a year" nonsense, once you've paid..you've paid!

This makes HPNB not just the most efficient and complete post-partum recovery program, it's also BY FAR the best value.

Though I'm not terribly active on  Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. I am however active on Threads so find me there!

And, of course, you can always find us on our YouTube channel if you like your podcast in video form :)

Visit healthypostnatalbody.com and get 3 months completely FREE access. No sales, no commitment, no BS.

This week I am returning to the age old subject of diastasis and backpain.

I saw a post on Threads this week from a VERY knowledgeable neurosurgeon that I follow, where she posted that she was surprised that after having had diastasis surgery her lower backpain was also gone.

And I just thought; "Well, if she doesn't know about this connection then I clearly haven't spoken about it enough".

So that's what we're doing.

Remember, everything..EVERYTHING, is connected and isolating small muscle groups does not work when you're dealing with postpartum recovery!

I'm changing things around a bit at the podcast so a bit of housekeeping to start the episode with

This week I'm answering some great questions that I've had.

You might have heard me talk about bloating and the impact on diastasis recti before.
A great question this week was to do with bloating around your period and whether this also affects diastasis recti recovery.

Then I talk a bit about the FODMAP diet as a solution for people who have issues with IBS/bloating etc. I personally think there's a better solution for this group of people and that's journalling.

And, finally, I'm talking heavy lifting/deadlifts postpartum. Why when I say "You can do whatever you want" I actually mean it!

Just a  reminder that HPNB now only has 5 billing cycles!

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

This week it's just little old me again as I talk about the weird, frankly insane, stigma surrounding c-sections.

A lot of chat on my social media feed was about c-section this week so I thought I'd spend a bit of time going over the numbers;

What % of women give birth via c-section in various countries?

What is the reason for most c-sections? (hint, it's not "too posh to push!!")

Why do doctors recommend c-sections for certain women? (hint; it's not "to make money"!)

What % of c-sections is elective? (it's a LOT lower than most people think..and even then there are usually very good reasons for it)

I also talk about the "diastasis recti is an adaptation" argument a bit and compare it to Wolverine's claws. Very useful in a fight, not so much when you want to open a jar of peanutbutter.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

This week I am delighted to be joined by Kayce Hodos as we're discussing perinatal mental health and why it's soo often overlooked as a natural part of pregnancy preparations.

Kayce is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and Perinatal Mental Health Specialist who helps anxious and overwhelmed moms navigate motherhood with confidence. Drawing from her own experience with postpartum anxiety and 20 years in the mental health field, she cuts through unrealistic parenting advice to deliver evidence-based mindfulness strategies that actually work. Whether her clients are struggling with sleep deprivation, feelings of isolation, or questioning their abilities as a mom, Kayce offers the professional guidance and genuine understanding they need to thrive.

We discuss many things including;

Why mental health prep is as important, if not more, than buying the right car seat.

Why it is soo often overlooked.

Why I hate the term "baby blues".

How your partner can, and should, help. (and so should the rest of the village)

Why a second, or third, child is more difficult mentally than the first (Sounds obvious, doesn't it?)

Why not feeling an immediate connection with your child is completely normal!

Why parents of twins are the ones you talk to when you want REAL parenting stories.

And much, much more

You can find Kayce in all the usual places;

Get 30% (!!!) off coaching with Kayce (As you know, I do NOT take commisions or referral monies)

I'm tying in with the wonderful "Adolescence" program on Netflix this week as I did an interview that I think a lot of people will love on a subject that the program touches on.

A couple of years ago I had the pleasure of talking to Daniel Sih;  Daniel is an award winning author has written a tremendous book called "Raising Tech-Healthy Humans".

 It's a practical handbook to help parents reset their children's tech-habits and give them a great start to life.

If you're concerned about your kid's social media/phone/tablet habits then this is the interview to listen to!

We're talking about many things including;

How to get an 8-year old off a tablet is a different process from teaching a 4-year old to use devices sensibly.
The difference between "lean-back" and "lean-in" technology and why it really matters.

How YouTube on the television is completely different from family movie night.
Why family technology time is a positive whereas spending time on the phone maybe isn't.
How to spot when your kid's tech-habits are becoming a problem.
How the technology, and social media, is DESIGNED to keep your child online so you as a parent have to be aware of what you're really up against.
YouTube is different when you're not signed in!
The physical, and developmental, effects of certain tech on your child.

The easiest ways to progress your child through the different forms of technology, and why you should slowly build up their exposure rather than just giving them access all in one go.

And much, MUCH, more

Daniel is a tremendous speaker and is very knowledgeable on this subject, if you're at all interested in what YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and everybody else online is doing to make sure your child is an avid consumer of their products, and how to make sure you teach your kids to use these tools properly,  you will want to listen to this.

Every now and again I am lucky enough to talk to someone who educates me about a subject I know very little, or have preconceived ideas about.

This is one of those times.

I am very lucky to be joined by Linsey Knerl this week as we're talking home schooling.

Lynsey is the author of the Homeschool Hacks book" How to Give Your Kid a Great Education Without Losing Your Job (or Your Mind)" and she basically spent an hour explaining to me that homeschooling is soo much more than exhausted parents sitting around the kitchen table trying to drill knowledge into a child that doesn't want to learn. And that it's also not "crazy people telling their kids the dinosaurs never really existed".

She explains that homeschooling is not just for the Well-to-do, it can be done on a budget.

We're also talking about curriculums, the benefits of modern technology.

How you don't have to have all the knowledge yourself to homeschool, you just need the right network.

I learned a tremendous amount during this chat and I'm sure you too will gain a completely new take on home schooling.

And much, much more.

Open Adoption: The Good, The Unexpected and The Wonderful

Although in the UK Open Adoption is the norm that is not the case everywhere.

This week I have the pleasure of talking to Ayo Haynes an, open adoption advocate, about the benefits and process of open adoption.

What exactly is it?

What are the benefits?

How does it work?

Did you know adoptive parents can experience similar physical symptoms after adoption as parents who gave birth do?

Although in the UK Open Adoption is the norm that is not the case everywhere.

This week I have the pleasure of talking to Ayo Haynes an, open adoption advocate, about the benefits and process of open adoption.

What exactly is it?

What are the benefits?

How does it work?

Did you know adoptive parents can experience similar physical symptoms after adoption as parents who gave birth do?

How to deal with the "sudden" arrival of a child when you haven't had 9 months to prepare.

Adopting as a single parent.

And much, much more.

This week I am delighted to be joined by Bev Mitelman M.A. as we discuss "Attachment Theory",

As I say several times throughout this podcast, this was an eye opening conversation for me.

Prior to becoming a Certified Attachment Practitioner and founding Securely Loved, Bev was an Executive Leader, University Lecturer and published author, having obtained her Masters' Degree in 2006.

She has dedicated her entire career (25+ years) working with adults in the realm of personal growth and professional development.

We discuss many things including;

What is attachment theory?

How do our early childhood relationships affect our adult ones?

How different generations might have different parenting styles (and how to overcome it hahaha)

How to build healthy relationships for yourself.

And much, MUCH, more.

This week I'm delighted to be joined by Brehan Crawford from Crawford Wellness as we discuss Traditional Chinese Medicine and the role it can play in your postpartum recovery.

Note; We're talking the REAL DEAL TCM, not the weird "let me sell you stuff you don't need" American style TCM!

Brehan has been practicing TCM for over 15 years;

In his 20s he started studying the philosophies and martial arts of Asia which led him to attend a Chinese Medicine school where he earned a Masters' degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.

Unsatisfied with the pseudoscience and superficial clinical experience of American TCM school he sought out a residency with a doctor of TCM trained in China, spent five years learning to manage complex chronic cases under his supervision, and eventually traveled to China to study directly from master physicians and martial artists there.

Over fifteen years of clinical practice he has accumulated many patients' stories of recovery, including mysterious onset of illnesses; mistreatment, gaslighting or disregard by the conventional American medical system; dissatisfaction & outright fraud from alternative medicine providers; and ultimately how they find the most benefit from practices thousands of years old with a deep basis in traditional culture that have justification from modern scientific evidence.

We discuss many things;

The problem with American TCM

From the benefits of Traditional practices such as Zuo Yuezi ("Sitting the Month") to the importance of taking time to REALLY recover postpartum.

Brehan explains what the impact of not being able to fully recover postpartum can look like. Issues like Fibromyalgia, chronic pelvic pain and IBS are not at all uncommon. We talk about the causes of these and how to resolve them.

I had a blast interviewing Brehan and, as I said in the podcast, I'm a big fan of the content he puts out.

You can find Brehan in all the usual places of the internet

This week I am waffling through another episode all by myself as I try to get the point across that a very narrow approach to postpartum recovery training will actually hurt you more than it will help.

Basically I am saying that, by only focussing on things like diastasis recti, pelvic floor issues etc and ignoring "normal" upperbody training and movements, you're going to run into problems later on and you really don't need to.

As I explain, unlike some other programs, in the HPNB program we start incorporating upperbody strength training from week 4 onwards as it's a vital part of getting you fit as a fiddle and ready to deal with whatever life throws at you.

Anyways, if you don't mind me taking ages to get to the point, this is a valuable episode for anyone to listen to..I promise :)

This week I have the absolute pleasure of being joined by pediatric eating expert Jessica Setnick ( MS,RD, CEDRD-S).

Jessica is one of my favourite guests to have had on the show.

We are talking everything to do with eating disorders in children;

How it can start, how you can tell there are issues and how to start resolving it.

Basically this is all about how you can help your child have a healthy relationship with food, regardless of whether they currently have one or not.

This is an absolutely essential conversation for every parent to be aware of as pediatric eating disorders are extremely common and, quite often, preventable/fixable with a bit of work (to be fair, sometimes a lot of work).

You can find Jessica here

Her website

And this is where you can get the workbook. Remember to use code "PODCAST" to get a whopping $30 off! (From $45 down to $15!)

This week I have the pleasure of talking to Dr Nigel Brayer DC, Ph.C., FIAMA about urinary health.

Very often we hear stories from women, either postpartum or not, who complain about bladder weakness and leakage.
There are a lot of supplements on the market that promise the world but always seem to under deliver and quite often "just doing your kegel exercises" isn't enough.

So I'm delighted that Nigel came onto the podcast to talk about urinary health, how common it is and to explain that a solution is usually actually available without surgery or drugs.

We cover a tremendous amount of ground in this episode and you definitely don't want to miss it!

One of the ongoing discussions people in the health space (I'll include everyone in that; Doctors, Physios, Dieticians, Nutritionists, Personal trainers etc) keep having is about "scope of practice".

For instance; Someone who is not a registered dietician can not give out personalised meal plans, telling you exactly what to eat. It doesn't matter whether they're a personal trainer or a GP, they don't have the qualifications to do so.
You will often hear physio therapists say the same thing; "If your client has an injury then you should refer out to a physio" and technically they are correct.

However, there are some grey areas in this. What about a minor niggle? Can/should a personal trainer refer out? I mean, you don't go to A&E with a small cut on your finger, do you?

And what happens when a qualified professional is seemingly incapable of helping you but someone in an adjacent profession does have the solution?
I give the example of my knee pain which physiotherapists kept messing around with and nothing was resolved, then I saw my sports massage therapist and he diagnosed the cause in 2 minutes and fixed it within 3 sessions. Should I not have listened? Should he have sent me away, back to the physios that didn't have the solution the first time?

All that, and more, in today's episode;

This week we're going back a few years when I talked about one of the questions that comes up regularly in the day-to-day life of any personal trainer and dietitian.

"I am doing everything right, why am I not losing weight?".

Fundamentally the answer is always "It's because you're not doing everything right", and this is what most personal trainers and dietitians will tell you, but that answer isn't enough.
The following question should always be "Let's try to find out what the missing link is to your success"
I go over the many reasons, and there can be many, you're just not getting the results you're looking for.

I talk about;

The importance of
BMR and calculating that correctly.

The problem with overreliance on exercise/training for weightloss.

The problem with "calorie in and calorie out, it's that simple".

"The time of the month" and the effects of menstruation on weight fluctuations.

How sleep, stress, anxiety and depression all impact your weight.

That breastfeeding does not equal weightloss.

The overall effects of hormones, including post-pregnancy hormones, on weightloss.

How "going out for a meal" can be a real bugger when you're trying to lose weight, and what the solution is...don't worry, it's not "just stay in".

Why I recommend going to "fancy restaurants" to almost all my weightloss clients.

And a bit more.

One of the most heard statements people post online, and that I get asked about a lot, is; Diastasis Recti is a lifelong condition that you will always need to manage.
So in this episode I talk about why this is clearly ridiculous.

Also; Postpartum backpain is very common but that doesn't mean it's inevitable or can't be resolved. So that's what we're talking about for the other half of the podcast.

and, very briefly, why I don't think the type of diet you choose for weightloss matters that much and why I don't find it interesting. What works for you works for you.

One of the most heard statements people post online, and that I get asked about a lot, is; Diastasis Recti is a lifelong condition that you will always need to manage.

How to set goals in 2025 and why "SMART goals" won't cut it

This week I talk about "setting goals" and why I don't particularly care for the "SMART goal" thing.

I would argue that most people really don't need to set specific goals and that the specificity of the goal is actually one of the reasons they end up not achieving anything every year.

I also touch, once again, on "High Protein" snacks...you don't need them...honest.

This week I am talking about "good form".

You know the kinds of things you hear "When squatting your knees shouldn't go past your toes", "When doing a deadlift your back should never be rounding", "When doing a core exercise push your lower back into the floor" etc. etc.

Does it really matter that much? I argue that it's nowhere near as important as people make it out to be.

And I, of course, tell you what "good form" should actually look, and FEEL, like.

After last week's part 1 where I covered Protein, creatine etc.  This week I'm tackling some of today's talked-about/hyped supplements and explain why it's crucial to approach them with a healthy dose of skepticism. Promising to clarify the role of trendy options like NAD, NAD+, and NMN,

Can boosting naturally declining NAD levels truly reverse aging? And should you trust wellness gurus who pivot from publishing to selling supplements with scant evidence?
With non-human studies forming the backbone of much of the current research, you'll hear why investing in healthy lifestyle habits like exercise and diet might be your best bet. I also call out the pattern of wellness figures capitalizing on fleeting trends, urging you to stay informed and cautious about what's genuinely effective for your health.

Link to the study I mentioned

In a 2 part episode I am discussing some of the supplements that you might have seen promoted online.
Next week I'll cover NMN, NAD, CBD etc but this week I'm focusing on supplements much more common in the health and fitness world;

Protein, Creatine, Vitamins and some bladder supplements (like Jude).

Are they safe, even pre and postpartum?

Are they useful?

Are the more expensive ones really better than cheaper version?

Are there alternatives?

IOW, should YOU be taking them or are you better off saving your money.

How will you know when your diastasis recti is healed?

33 min Transcript

Send us Fan Mail

I had a wonderful email from someone in Mexico asking me the, seemingly straightforward, "When will I know my diastasis is healed?" so in this episode I spend 30 minutes answering that very question.

The issue with this question is that diastasis recti has a specific definition (one that isn't wide enough, in my opinion) and therefore quite often women get told that their diastasis is "healed" when it actually really isn't.

And you can also have the situation where the diastasis (the gap) isn't actually much of an issue anymore but, technically, you still have it.

So today I'm clearing it all up, whether you're an athlete or not. Whether you're into hill walking or a pro-tennis player..all will be clear :)

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

This week I am joined by Dr Jessie Hehmeyer.

She is a functional medicine practitioner and the founder of Well Empowered.

We are talking everything Functional Medicine;

Why functional medicine gets a bad rep, how it works and how it should work.

Why a good practitioner does more than just order a barrage of tests and sell supplements.

The problem with the "quick fix" approach and why real improvement in your health often takes time.

How there is no miracle cure, and much, much more.

It's a great conversation and one that will no doubt leave you much better informed and, hopefully, inspired to take positive steps to improve your health.

You can find Dr Hehmeyer in all the usual places;

In this week's episode I have the pleasure of being joined by Dr Emilie Wilson.

Emilie is a Naturopathic doctor and, more importantly, she's also the author of  "POST: The Essential Guide to Creating Your Postpartum Self-Care Plan in Pregnancy" .

We are talking about the importance of planning for your postpartum life during your pregnancy.
As I've mentioned before; the more you plan for things going well, and things potentially not going great, the easier your postpartum life (and mental health) will be.

Emilie talks us through the things to focus on and one or two things that very often get overlooked.
We speak about Postpartum Depression and Anxiety and how preparing for everything early on can really help if you are unfortunate enough to be one of the many women who suffer from this.

Emilie also explains how to set up a good support network and how to bring the family in successfully.
As always when discussing these things we also talk about the gaps there are in the healthcare system, how it could be improved, and how to navigate your way through that yourself.

Her book is a tremendous reference work and you can download a FREE guide that actually helps you out a lot already here

You can find her in all the right places;

website

Did you know that  overtraining/undereating and and the exercise/food balance can impact your menstrual cycle, bone health, and mental health?

Especially for women who's body has just gone through an intense, and often traumatic, experience like pregnancy and giving birth this can really have a huge impact on your health.
You're seemingly doing "everything right" yet feel like you're struggling all the time and even your menstrual cycle can get messed up.

RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) is much more common in postpartum women  than you might think and Allison Yamamoto has very kindly agreed  to come onto my little show to talk about this.

We talk about the causes of RED-S.
How society's pressures on women can cause women to, unknowingly, be sabotaging their own health.
How a "I have to do everything" approach is actually holding you back and impacting your health.
How a workaholic lifestyle, which most postpartum women have (when's the last time YOU had a break?) leads to issues
And, of course, we discuss the solution!

Allison is absolutely amazing and I have no doubt you'll be very happy that you listened to this episode.

You keep asking about postpartum backpain so we keep talking about it :)

This week I have the pleasure of being joined by David Jeter who is an awesome physical therapist. We're talking post-partum back-pain and the benefits of physical therapy and exercise generally.

We discuss many, many things including;

What is post-partum back pain and what causes it?
Is surgery THE solution?
Why is post-partum backpain soo often ignored by both the medical community and those suffering from it?
Why are people not aware just how effective physical therapy is to deal with back-pain?
How the PT community is doing a terrible job of promoting the benefits of exercise and is spending too much time selling cheap-tricks.
And how you can help yourself if you're suffering from any sort of muscle related pain.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

Wouldn't it be nice if postpartum recovery was included in the NHS services, as they should be?

Rather than NHS GPs making Instagram commercials for private, and expensive, postpartum recovery programs we should ALWAYS be pushing for FREE access for women.
The Americanisation of British healthcare is a real problem and, the truth is, we would not accept this if this was happening for anything other than postpartum recovery?
Imagine NHS GPs advertising for people to get cataract treatment private. Or saying that "loads of people come to me with a broken leg so I tell them to buy X-program"!

It is outrageous that an essential service is being outsourced and that many women are being priced out of access.

So that's what I spend the first 15 or so minutes talking about, then I move on to "pelvic floor or diastasis recti?".

One of my PT colleagues, who is also a client, asked why online recovery programs now seemed to focus much more on pelvic floor in their advertising than they do on diastasis recti? What is the reason behind this change? Have the programs changed??

As always; HPNB is, and always will be, FREE for 3 months.

If you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering.

Though I'm not terribly active on  Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. I am however active on Threads so find me there!

On this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking to  Dr. Gina Simmons Schneider.

Gina is the author of Frazzlebrain: Break Free from Anxiety, Anger, and Stress Using Advanced Discoveries in Neuropsychology (Central Recovery Press, March 2022).

She is a licensed psychotherapist, executive coach, and corporate trainer. She serves as codirector of Schneider Counseling and Corporate Solutions.

Dr. Schneider is a coping skills expert with more than 25 years of experience helping people regulate difficult emotions and conflicts. Dr. Schneider is certified in Neuroscience for Clinicians through PESI and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing through National Trauma Services.

In short, she is a remarkably qualified person when it comes  to dealing with stressful situations and emotions.

We have a tremendous conversation about how we can all deal with stressful situations better and more productively, making sure we don't stay in that stressed state for too long and realising that we might not control the situation but, with a bit of help, we can control our response and make our life easier for ourselves.

We are talking the power of the mind when it comes to stress but even when it comes to things like weightloss and athletic performance and post-partum recovery.

I would highly recommend reading Frazzlebrain, it's a great read, and Dr Gina has a gift for explaining these concepts in a clear and engaging way.

You can find her in all the usual spaces;

Her website
Facebook
Instagram

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

BUT, if you decide you want to do the rest of the program, after only 5 months of paying $10/£8 a month you now get FREE LIFE TIME ACCESS! That's $50 max spend, in case you were wondering.

How much protein do you need postpartum?

In this week's episode I waffle, and I DO mean waffle (so apologies for that), about protein intake postpartum.

Does the popular guideline of "1gram of protein per lb of body weight"go for postpartum women as well?
In fact, does it actually go for anyone??

I, as you listen to me go through some numbers that I pulled out of thin air, hope that this will give you an idea as to;

How much more you should be eating if your breastfeeding/expressing, what the right macro split really is and how the protein focus ties in with that.

I also briefly talk about backpain after pushing a pram for too long and why your hand position could actually be the cause, AND THE SOLUTION, to that particular problem.

I was going to do another Q&A this week but time ran away from me so I have the pleasure of bringing you the conversation I did with Rebecca Washuta.

Rebecca is a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist and Health Coach specializing in weight loss and habit formation. She has been featured in a tonne of magazines and news segments and is a great person to talk to about how to take practical steps towards a healthier diet.

We discuss many, many things including;

What the Big 3 formula for creating healthy meals and snacks is.
How if you are hungry within 2-3 hours after eating a meal that means your meal isn't put together properly.
The importance of chosing good quality protein over shitty "extra protein" snacks (such as Pepperamis).
The importance of fibre.
Why meal plans suck.
How almost all pre-packaged foods are horrifically low on fibre and therefor low on satiety.
How to change eating habits successfully.
My dislike of setting the wrong goals, and SMART goals.

And much, much more.

You can find Rebecca in all the places the cool people hang out.

Intuitive Eating and Fluoride in drinking water.

Have you ever wondered if you should try "Intuitive Eating"?
IE pops up on my social media feeds every now and again and, although I'm hugely in favour of people using their intuition when they do anything, I can't help but think some people are not really being honest with you about how tricky it can be and how to start.

I talk about the issues many people face when changing their diet to a more intuitive one; From old habits, to a massive food industry that's trying to get you to ignore your intuition.

I also touch on the hotly debated topic of fluoride exposure in drinking water and its potential impact on children's intelligence.
You might have seen the scary headlines "FLUORIDE IN DRINKING WATER MAKES KIDS DUMB!" or, even worse, "Fluoride is a neurotoxin and will kill you"

Drawing from a comprehensive 300-page report by the US Department of Health and Human Services, I explore the moderate association found between high fluoride levels and lower IQ scores in children, especially in parts of the world with higher fluoride exposure than the US.
I try to give you the full picture, summarise the findings and reassure you about the current safety standards for fluoride levels in the US and UK.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

In this week's episode I have the pleasure of talking with Miguel Bautista from CFSrecovery.com about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

We discuss why CFS, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), is often referred to as the "invisible illness," and talk about the daily challenges faced by those living with this misunderstood. and often ignored, condition.

Miguel provides a compassionate perspective on the importance of addressing CFS with empathy, alongside practical management strategies that highlight the parallels between CFS and long COVID.

We discuss the relationship between our modern, stress-filled lives and chronic illnesses such as CFS, fibromyalgia, and even long COVID.

We dissect how constant stimulation from technology and societal pressures can lead our brains to misinterpret everyday stressors as life-threatening situations, exacerbating anxiety and contributing to chronic health issues.

Miguel will help you find balance and reclaim your health with actionable lifestyle changes aimed at managing stress and achieving sustainable well-being.

Should an athlete's postpartum program be sport specific?

Should postpartum recovery be sport-specific?

I had a wonderful email from someone who said the following;

Hi Pete,

Long time no see, I hope you’re well.

 As you probably know I gave birth again a few months ago and am working with a team on my recovery.

 We’ve only really just started so I’m very early on. My physio is (name removed) ,obviously I’ve known him for years, but my women’s health physio is someone Iv’e never dealt with before (and neither has anyone else I know in (name of sport removed)) and she said something that stuck with me and made me think…ermm…I’ll ask Pete about that.

 She said that my post-partum recovery program should be specific to (sport removed). And yes going back to playing is absolutely key but, how is the program sport specific? when I asked her to clarify she said that another sport’s program is completely different postpartum than ours is and she was a bit short after that so I left it.

 Any thoughts?

So that is what I'm discussing today.
I go through my reasoning and explain the way I work, with both athletes and non-athletes.

Is it different if you're a tennis or football player? What about for judokas and shotputters?

BTW this episode is not just for professional athletes, it VERY much also goes for "normal" people who just want to go back to doing what they love to do.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

This week I am joined by the amazing Natalie Bevans as we're talking pre- and post-partum skincare.

Natalie is a Master Aesthetician and she very kindly gave up an hour of her time to explain to little old me why skincare really matters when you're pregnant or post-partum.

We discuss many things including;

How being pregnant and giving birth changes your skin.
Why your skincare routine needs to change when you're pregnant.
In fact, why it regularly needs to change (my ignorance really showing through here on this bit :))
The importance of looking after your skin
Skincare starts with what you put IN your body rather than what you put ON it.

And much, MUCH, more.

After receiving a tonne, well 6, of emails about postpartum backpain over the past few weeks I am bringing you a chat I had with David Jeter who is an awesome physical therapist. We're talking post-partum back-pain and the benefits of physical therapy and exercise generally.

We discuss many, many things including;

In the news this week, this article from the American Association for Cancer Research which demonstrates nicely how certain myths don't die out.

I hear the following phrase a lot in my daily life "A glass of red wine a day is good for you" and it's just not true,

After receiving a tonne, well 6, of emails about postpartum backpain over the past few weeks I am bringing you a chat I had with David Jeter who is an awesome physical therapist. We're talking post-partum back-pain and the benefits of physical therapy and exercise generally.

We discuss many, many things including;

In the news this week, this article from the American Association for Cancer Research which demonstrates nicely how certain myths don't die out.

I hear the following phrase a lot in my daily life "A glass of red wine a day is good for you" and it's just not true,
ALL types of alcohol raise the risk of certain cancers, which is something to be aware of.
HOWEVER...That doesn't mean drinking gives you cancer..stuff like this isn't black and white.

This week I talk about the many benefits of exercise during pregnancy.

I mention the story of one of my clients who came to me after the birth of her first child, what we did and what her condition was like that the time.

The we fast forward a few years and I talk about the difference she noticed, and felt, postpartum because we had done a bit of work during her pregnancy.
I mention the type of exercises we had done and the overall effects.

I also briefly mention the CycleSyncing episode as I've had some emails about this and what my main issue with the vast majority of them is.

Let me be very clear, as this is something I try to live by; When someone sells you something they should do that from a place of honesty and integrity.

Having said that;

This week  I try to highlight that postpartum recovery, and postpartum health issues, are generally nothing to be scared of.

Diastasis recovery, pelvic girdle pain and back pain solutions are often sold to new mums as "you have A PROBLEM!! BE AFRAID!!" rather than "Yeah, we can sort this. Don't worry about it."

I highlight some of the tactics used to trick you into buying something you don't need.

I also talk about why I think most people will have enough if they have follow a good postpartum program for 3 months. After that you should really be able to start doing what you actually want to do again.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

Is cycle syncing the next big breakthrough in fitness, or just another marketing gimmick?

Should you really only do weight training or HIIT for 2 weeks per month and does that really increase strength by 15% more than consistently doing it?

What about adjusting your diet to "balance your hormones"?

I have been on a quest to get my hands on the studies your favourite cycle-sync app/websites claim they have done and discuss what I have found.

At least one website regularly makes claims about studies that directly contradicts what the study actually said so..it does not bode well.

But tune in now to see if there's anything behind the hype, and find out what you should be doing.

Here is the blog post I referred to and here is the link to the actual study they butchered.

Answering member questions this week I am talking about the difference between the various kinds of diastasis and whether you should do different exercises to help recover from them.

And I'm talking about whether you can heal diastasis just by losing weight and if being overweight is actually that big of a deal when it comes to diastasis recti.

Believe it or not, this takes me 25 minutes so you're welcome :)

This week I am joined by Dr. Rebecca Dekker, founder of Evidence Based Birth, and host of the amazing podcast with the same name, as we talk everything childbirth.

Dr. Dekker reveals the shocking realities of hospital childbirth practices that often prioritize outdated routines over evidence-based care. Discover how restrictive practices, such as limiting movement and denying food and drink, can lead to complications and traumatic birth experiences.
Learn why advocating for yourself and understanding evidence-based childbirth practices can significantly improve outcomes for both mother and baby.

There is a huge difference between old-school obstetric care and modern, evidence-driven approaches.

Dr. Dekker shares powerful stories that highlight the impact of systemic structures in healthcare, which often prioritize efficiency over personalized care.

Hear about the prevalence of birth trauma due to these rigid systems and the transformative experience of evidence based practices that are not just better for the baby but, more importantly, are much better for the woman.

You can find some of the amazing, FREE, resources we discussed here..and you definitely don't want to miss out!

You can also get yourself a copy of Dr Dekker's book in all the usual places or just click that little link!

After recieving loads of emails about the pelvic floor, and seeing it discussed even more online this week;

In this week's episode we are talking Pelvic Floor with the amazing MaryEllen Reider.

MaryEllen is the co-director of Yarlap, the wellness device to treat urinary incontinence and improve sexual performance and experience through muscle control. MaryEllen spends a lot of time researching and finding out what’s new in the pelvic floor world and the social media realm.
She strives to empower women through their pelvic floor muscles. She enjoys getting to know her customers through social media and speaking events, and inspiring people about why the Kegel exercises and Yarlap are so important.

 MaryEllen and her dad have emerged as a leading voice in the pelvic floor and sex tech wellness space and she's a delight to talk to so definitely check this episode out.

As I say in the outro, I reckon the Yarlap could be a gamechanger for the pelvic floor.

We are talking about  many things including;
What is the pelvic floor and why is it so important?
Why, oh why, are pelvic floor exercises so difficult to do for most women?

The impact of a good doula. Interview with Bianca Sprague

This week I am over the moon to be joined by Bianca Sprague from Bebo Mia

Imagine having a support system that empowers you through every stage of parenthood, from preconception to the early days of postpartum.

Bianca and I talk about the impact doulas have on birthing individuals and families. She explains the role of a good doula; how doulas offer nonjudgmental, continuous support, enabling parents to make informed decisions and navigate the often overwhelming landscape of pregnancy and childbirth.

We also talk about the vital advocacy role doulas play in medical settings.

We explore the fear surrounding medical statistics and the crucial support doulas provide in helping parents trust their intuition and make measured decisions during labor.
Looking back on the 2020 pandemic, we discuss the detrimental effects of excluding doulas from birthing spaces and emphasize the long-term benefits of trauma-informed, compassionate care.

As we delve into family dynamics, Bianca also talks about the crucial role doulas play in mediating prenatal conversations and managing generational parenting practices.

We explore how doulas help navigate the often stressful involvement of grandparents and other family members, ensuring a harmonious postpartum environment.

And finally, we discuss the expansive training opportunities available for those interested in becoming doulas, highlighting a comprehensive 17-week program designed to empower future doulas with the knowledge and confidence to support their clients effectively.

Bianca is an absolute marvel in the doula world and if you've ever considered a change in career, or doula training in general, then I would look no further.

You can find Bianca and Bebomia in all the usual places;

3 tips to a speedy post-partum recovery, and more, in a Q&A

 As I'm still waiting on a response from some people about an episode I had planned about menstrual cycling and menstrual mapping.
This week I'm answering some more of your questions and emails, covering a rather wide variety of subjects.

What are my top 3 tips for a successful, and fast, post-partum recovery?

Why resistance training for your upperbody is key if you want to recover post-partum. (And why there is a lot of it in the HPNB program)

The importance of "dynamic training" rather than the standard "up and down" type of training you see in most post-partum programs.

This week I am delighted to be joined by Elaine Taylor-Klaus from Impact Parents as we explore the unique needs of neurodivergent, or "neuro-spicy," children.

Elaine breaks down the differences between neurotypical and neurodivergent brains, addressing conditions like ADHD, anxiety, depression, learning disabilities, trauma, and autism.

We discuss how these differences impact executive function and why it's crucial for parents to adapt their expectations and strategies to support their children effectively.

All in all it's a wonderful conversation which I have no doubt will help and give insight to many people.

You can find Impact Parents everywhere
Facebook
Instagram

And definitely check out their amazing "Parenting with impact"
podcast which is an amazing resource to all parents of neurodivergent/neurospicy kids.

Though I'm not terribly active on  Instagram and Facebook you can follow us there. I am however active on Threads so find me there!

And, of course, you can always find us on our YouTube channel if you like your podcast in video form :)

Macros, Calories or Food quality? What makes a "good" diet?

One of those things that keeps popping up is the age-old question;
"What matters more Calories, Macros or food quality when it comes to diets?"

So today that is what I am talking about.

When does each of these matter and when do they not?
Do you really need a 40-30-30 macro split for "healthy eating"?
1g of protein per lbs of body weight????
Should you start with protein when planning your meal?
Does it need to be organic or not?

I, in a roundabout way,  answer all these questions.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.

So this means that you not only get 3 months FREE access, no obligation!

After having several chats, and getting several emails via peter@healthypostnatalbody.com asking about vaginal health this month I wanted to bring you this interview I did with Beth DuPriest PhD

Vaginal health expert Dr. Beth DuPriest, is the Chief Science Officer at Vaginal Biome Science

Dr. DuPriest is a former Professor of Biology and Division Dean and has been involved in research related to developmental origins of health and disease for over twenty years.

Her PhD in Integrated Biomedical Sciences through the Dept. of Physiology & Pharmacology and post doctoral work through the Dept. of Pathology were completed at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU). Her work has been focused on both women’s and maternal health.

She has taught courses in microbiology, eukaryotic cell biology, genetics, biochemistry and pathophysiology among many others. She brings a broad background in women’s health and biological science and strong leadership and collaborative skills to advancing the work and discovery of vaginal microbiome science.

Beth has spent over a decade researching and teaching about women’s vaginal and maternal health, now running clinical studies to test how improving the vaginal microbiome can improve a wide variety of vulvovaginal conditions

We are talking everything to do with vaginal health.

Why vaginal health matters much more than people think it does.
Whether you should use special soap or not
How taking care of your vaginal area improves your overall health, and the possible consequences of not taking care of it.
The vaginal biome.
UTI infections and how the vaginal biome ties in with this.
How much of a shame it is that women's health is soo ridiculously underfunded and the massive impact that has on women's health overall.

And much, MUCH, more

This is one of the most enjoyable, and informative, chats I've had in a long time and it'd be a shame to miss it!

You can find some products that Dr DuPriest recommends here

I made the mistake of searching "diastasis recti" in my social media feed on Threads this week and boy-oh-boy..did I come across some nonsense.

So that's what I'm doing today, another "mythbusting" episode.

Can you heal within 28 days by doing only 4 exercises?

Is breathing useless?

Why do people use meaningless jargon?

Do posture and alignment REALLY mean as much as "they" say?

And why high-protein diets are not required for postpartum recovery.

And so much more.

 As I'm still ridiculously busy with the upcoming exciting thing I can't yet talk about ;)

This week I bring you the conversation I had with nutritional therapist Kirsten Chick a few years ago.

Not only is Kirsten a nutritional therapist, She's a public speaker, educator, podcast host of not one but TWO podcasts and author of "Nutrition brought to life". In other words, she's incredibly knowledgable about all things food related.

We spent a solid hour talking about the effects of stress, and diet, on the human body.

We talk about the physical effects of stress on the human body, including on digestion and weightmanagement.
Whether food can cause an increase in the levels of stress.
Which foods help with stress-management and which nutrients to look out for, and what they do.
The benefit of taking 10-15 minutes screenbreaks, and other time-outs, every day.
Why eating whilst working is not the same as eating whilst stepping away from the computer.
The benefit of eating a bit more slowly.

And many, MANY other things.

It's a  fascinating chat with tonnes of wisdom and advice for all of us but especially powerful for women with young children. After all, stress-management can have such a huge impact on the health and happiness of you, and those around you, and Kirsten gives you a LOT of "easy to follow and implement" bits of information.

You can find Kirsten's "Nutrition brought to life" on Amazon and Waterstone's.
You can listen to the Nutrition Brought to Life podcast here.
Her currently active podcast (IHCAN) can be found here
 Of course Kirsten is on Instagram, YouTube , and Facebook.

You don't have to worry about diastasis recti....honest

On this week's episode I talk about what I believe is one of the biggest problems in women's post-natal recovery; Fear. And especially "The fear of making things worse".

By far most of the emails I get refer to this in one way or another.

"What if I make my diastasis worse?"
"I am told I can't do X exercise because my stomach will rip open"
"The physio told me not to lift anything, including my toddler"

The fitness industry, especially the post-partum fitness industry, is selling you this idea that you have to be scared or disgusted all the time.

"BE CAREFUL OR YOU'LL NEVER RECOVER!"
"DON'T CARRY YOUR BABY ON YOUR HIPS OR YOU'LL MAKE YOUR DIASTASIS WORSE!"
"DIASTASIS IS A LIFELONG CONDITION
.....so keep giving me your money".

"I know you don't like your post-partum belly but you gave birth and that's a beautiful thing" is a wonderful "negging" thing to do that makes you think you should feel unhappy with the way you look and it's something a lot of post-partum exercise providers like to use.

Though there are of course certain things you have to be aware of when trying to heal your diastasis/pelvic floor or any other post-partum issues that is not the same as being scared or digusted.

As always; HPNB still only has 5 billing cycles.
