The cold war was the defining event of the second half of the 20th century.

When exactly it ended has been subject to debate. Was it the fall of the Berlin Wall? Was the day the Soviet Union was dissolved?

There is an argument to be made that end might have actually occurred before any of those things, although no one knew it at the time.

The event in question didn’t take place in Moscow or Washington but in a supermarket in the suburbs of Houston.

Learn more about the most important supermarket visit in history on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The First Battle of the Marne (Encore)

11 min
View

If you think of the First World War, your mind probably turns to images of trench warfare and thousands of men losing their lives to try and gain just a few meters of land.

However, in the first few weeks of the war, this was not at all the case. In fact, it initially looked like the war might not even last two months.

What stopped the collapse of France and began widespread trench warfare was a desperate battle that took place in the first week of September 1914.

Once Upon A Time in Shaolin

14 min

In 2015, the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan released an album that was unlike any other in the history of recorded music.

It simultaneously set the record for the highest amount of money ever spent on a work of music, and it was the worst-selling album in history in terms of unit sales.

The reason why it holds both of those distinctions is because only one copy of it was ever made.

Learn more about Once Upon A Time in Shaolin and the album which is unlike any other ever made, on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Allied invasion of Normandy was one of the most complex military operations ever conducted. Thousands of ships and planes had to work in conjunction with tens of thousands of soldiers who had to do one of the most difficult things in warfare: an amphibious landing.

In addition to all of the planning that went into the invasion, there were many unknowns. The only way to learn was to practice some of the elements of the landing.

In April 1944, about six weeks before D-Day, the Allies conducted a practice exercise off the coast of England, and it turned into one of the biggest disasters of the war.

Learn more about Exercise Tiger and the disastrous rehearsal for D-Day on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Exoplanets (Encore)

Ever since astronomers figured out that the stars in the sky are just like our sun, they began wondering if those stars had planets just like our sun.

For centuries this remained an unanswerable question. Telescopes and techniques weren’t advanced enough to get an answer one way or another.

Eventually, however, astronomers developed methods to detect if there were planets outside of our solar system, and when they did, they found them everywhere.

If you’ve been around long enough, and by that, I only mean a couple of years, you have probably observed the one fundamental truth about computers: they always get faster.

While games and web browning might seem faster, the average person’s computer usage doesn’t necessarily express just how much more powerful computers have become.

In particular, for several decades, supercomputers have been developed which are vastly more powerful than what is one your desk or in your pocket. Unless that is, you make comparisons over time…

The Origins of the Vietnam War

15 min

The Vietnam War was perhaps the most significant event that took place in the last half of the 20th century.

It had profound impacts on the American military and foreign policy as well as on its culture.

However, many people have a very simplistic view of the causes of the war. They assume it was just a result of Cold War politics. While that was certainly a cause, the root causes go back much further.

What is certain is that Mary was ultimately responsible for the union of the Scottish and British crowns and the creation of the United Kingdom that we know today.

A Brief History of Nothing

14 min
View

One of the most difficult concepts for early thinkers to get their heads around was the idea of nothing.

Everywhere we go, all our lives, there is something. There is air and matter that surrounds us everywhere because if there weren’t, we wouldn’t be here.

Eventually, scientists and philosophers became comfortable with the idea of nothing and were able to study it. What they found was that nothing was actually something.

Learn more about vacuums and how the concept of it was accepted and then eventually created and put to use on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Just south of the United States and north of Guatemala is Mexico, a fact which I’m sure all of you know.

However, most people don’t know that much about Mexico. There are caricatures of Mexico, and many people are familiar with some of the tourist areas, but that’s about it.

In reality, Mexico is one of the world’s largest countries, and its unique geography has influenced its history and economy.

Learn more about Mexico's physical, cultural, and economic geography on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Germ Theory of Disease

14 min
View

For thousands of years, many theories have been put forward as to the cause of communicable diseases.

These theories ranged from the religious to the magical and sometimes quasiscientific, but what they all had in common was that there was no proof for anything.

Over the centuries these theories became dogma and often prevented a better understanding of diseases. It wasn’t until the 19th century that we got a clear picture of what the cause actually was.

Learn more about the germ theory of disease and why it took so long to recognize on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

A History of Textiles, Fabrics, and Cloth

13 min
View

I would say that there is a very good chance that almost everyone listening to the sound of my voice right now is wearing something made of cloth.

Cloth, textiles, and fabrics go back a very long way, but despite their ancient origins, not every culture had them.

Yet, where they existed, they were often some of the most valuable commodities, and they were, in some fashion, used by everyone from rich to poor.

Learn more about cloth, textiles, and fabrics, their origin, and how they’ve changed throughout history on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Battle of Carrhae

15 min
View

In the year 53 BC, Rome suffered one of the greatest military defeats in its history. A Roman army led by Marcus Lucinisu Crassus was led into the desert in present-day Southern Turkey and was systematically destroy by an army from the Kingdom of Parthia.

The defeat itself didn’t radically weaken Rome, but the death of Crassus led to a chain of events that would result in the end of the Roman Republic.

It was also the opening salvo in a centuries-long rivalry between Rome and Parthia that would never be definitively resolved.

Learn more about the Battle of Carrhae and how the role it played in the destruction of the Roman Republic on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
