What is wrong with our current educational system? And how can we provide our children with a high-quality education in spite of the pervasive issues? In addition to being a lifelong homeschooled student herself, Hannah Frankman uses her podcast to explore the issues in our current school system and creative solutions to provide our children an education that suits their actual needs. I love talking about homeschooling on this podcast, but this episode adds a new dimension to the conversations I have been having. Hannah addresses the question: is homeschooling right for every family? What about socialization? What is the history of the public school system and why does that matter to us today? If you have been on the fence about homeschooling or have questions about what it could look like in your own family, don’t miss this fascinating conversation with Hannah.

In this episode, we cover:

  • The unique capabilities Hannah noticed in herself as she entered the “real world” after being homeschooled her whole life
  • What busyness is robbing from our children and society as a whole
  • How boredom is actually a gift to children
  • What a self-directed curiosity-driven education can look like from early years through high school
  • Making a case for why homeschooled kids are actually more socialized than their public school peers
  • Where did the public school model come from and what is broken about it?
  • Analyzing national outcomes of the public school experiment
  • How well-intentioned teachers are set up to fail by the public school system
  • Hannah’s surprising opinion on the BEST schooling option for children
  • No matter what educational path you choose, THIS is the ultimate goal of all education

I hear from many of you who have a dream of living a homestead lifestyle on your own property out in the country. Natalie and her family had a similar dream, and they were determined to do it without taking on a mortgage. Rather than opting for an RV or tiny home, they turned a shed into the cottage of their dreams. Natalie joins me in this episode to share about the process, answer frequently asked questions, and talk through their long-term vision. I hope Natalie’s story inspires your creativity and resourcefulness as you work toward your own dreams!

In this episode, we cover:

  • What led Natalie and her family to sell their property in Texas and build a 750 sq. ft. shed home in South Carolina
  • Making a small house work for a large family is easier than you may think
  • Why a shed house is the perfect solution for families who dream of living on land
  • What costs should you factor into a shed home build?
  • These long-term options make a shed home worth the investment
  • What it’s really like living with four young boys in a tiny house
  • Answering the most common questions about Natalie’s shed home
  • Logistics of moving a large family with farm animals

If you have been following along recently, you know that we sold our beloved farmhouse and are preparing to build our dream home on our new farm property.  I’ve received lots of questions about why we bought a temporary home while we build and what our plans are for the future.  I’m sharing an update on how the move went and what the next steps are!  I’m also sharing encouragement for the younger mom.  There are so many things I allowed myself to feel guilty about in my early motherhood, and I want to offer you perspective and permission to let those things go.  Join me for this personal update and mini pep talk!

In this episode, we cover:

  • Answering some common questions about selling our farmhouse, moving into town, and building on our new property
  • My approach to caring for multiple small children at once without losing my mind
  • Why our recent move was more stressful than I anticipated and how I tackled the chaos
  • What I have learned over the years about managing the items our kids are constantly bringing into the house
  • Getting into the practicals of how I dress my kids to spend ample time outdoors on the coldest of days
  • Freeing you from the guilt that you are not doing enough for your kids
  • The one homemaking task I never tire of
  • My thoughts on keeping up with memories and milestones as a mother of eight kids

In this episode, we cover:

  • The warning signs to look for to know whether you are living in chaos
  • A simple framework to help you start crawling out of the chaos
  • How to avoid the number one mistake people make when trying to get organized
  • Strategies for overcoming the decision fatigue that comes with decluttering
  • Overcoming the psychological pull that keeps us from getting rid of items we don’t need
  • Breaking down what is happening in our brains when we struggle to declutter
  • A manageable approach to kids’ artwork and other sentimental items
  • Do we ever regret items we have decluttered?
  • Tips for getting started on simplifying your life when you are in a stressful season

ABOUT ROBYN

Robyn Buchanan is a mom, wife, nurse and youtube creator. She started her minimalism journey because she was overwhelmed coming home to a cluttered house after working in a chaotic emergency department.

Since decluttering, she not only uncovered her floors and surfaces, but also the deeper meanings behind our clutter, how clutter impacts our focus, why it’s so hard to declutter, and how life is freer without our stuff weighing us down.

Robyn lives on Vancouver Island in BC with her 3 teen boys and husband, 4 out of 5 of them have ADHD, including Robyn & her husband. She loves hiking, gardening and cooking along with Jane Austen, Monty Python and Harry Potter movies.

After hearing Sue give a live presentation, I knew I had to have her on the podcast. She has been researching, baking with, and sharing about whole grains since the 1990s. She is truly an expert when it comes to utilizing whole wheat in your home kitchen. In this conversation, we are diving into the history and politics of wheat production, the vast array of nutrients contained in a whole grain, how to seamlessly incorporate whole grains into your baking, and more. In this episode, we cover:

  • The troubling history of white flour in the United States and its connection to disease
  • The significant health improvements Sue and her family experienced as a result of consuming freshly-milled grains
  • Addressing some popular myths about sourdough, whole grains, phytic acid, and more
  • A dive into the nutritional benefits of whole grains
  • Inspiring testimonies of how freshly-milled wheat is transforming individuals' health

Lately, I have become convinced that I want to get back to feeding my family whole grains instead of white flour. I hope you find inspiration from Sue's message as well!

  • Looking at bread consumption through a common-sense and ancestral lens
  • Wading through the noise of dietary trends and keeping food simple
  • An overview of different types of grains and their uses
  • Does whole grain bread lose nutrients if fermented with sourdough?
  • Considerations when converting an all-purpose recipe to freshly-milled flour
  • Sue's tried and true hack for stocking your kitchen with freshly-baked whole grain bread every week

  • Why we both prefer washing dishes by hand instead of using a dishwasher
  • Simplifying meal times to take one thing off your mental load
  • How long should you try out a new routine before deciding if it’s working or not?

ABOUT JOEL

Joel Salatin calls himself a Christian libertarian environmentalist capitalist lunatic farmer. Others who like him call him the most famous farmer in the world, the high priest of the pasture, and the most eclectic thinker from Virginia since Thomas Jefferson. Those who don’t like him call him a bio-terrorist, Typhoid Mary, charlatan, and starvation advocate.

With 12 published books and a thriving multi-generational family farm, he draws on a lifetime of food, farming, and fantasy to entertain and inspire audiences around the world. He’s as comfortable moving cows in a pasture as addressing CEOs at a Wall Street business conference.

He co-owns, with his family, Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia. Featured in the New York Times bestseller Omnivore’s Dilemma and award-winning documentary Food Inc., the farm services more than 5,000 families, 50 restaurants, 10 retail outlets, and a farmers’ market with salad bar beef, pigaerator pork, pastured poultry, and forestry products. When he’s not on the road speaking, he’s at home on the farm, keeping the callouses on his hands and dirt under his fingernails, mentoring young people, inspiring visitors, and promoting local, regenerative food and farming systems.

Salatin is the editor of The Stockman Grass Farmer, granddaddy catalyst for the grass farming movement. He writes the Pitchfork Pulpit column for Mother Earth News, as well as numerous guest articles for ACRES USA and other publications. A frequent guest on radio programs and podcasts targeting preppers, homesteaders, and foodies, Salatin’s practical, can-do solutions tied to passionate soliloquies for sustainability offer everyone food for thought and plans for action.

When you put significant effort into sourcing and growing high quality food for your family, you quickly learn that you need a reliable way to preserve it for future use. Many homemakers are familiar with the tried and true methods of canning, fermenting, and dehydrating, but there is a newer method on the scene that is revolutionizing the way we preserve food. Carolyn started out very skeptical of freeze drying but has since become an expert. She’s joining me to share how freeze drying has transformed her homestead kitchen and how it can improve the way you preserve food!

In this episode, we cover:

  • How a freeze-drying skeptic became a believer
  • What is the difference between dehydrating and freeze drying?
  • A brief scientific explanation of why freeze dried food maintains its nutritional value and flavor
  • What to be aware of when you first start freeze drying
  • How to know if your freeze dried food is safe to eat
  • Talking through various short-term and long-term storage options
  • How freeze drying lends itself to from-scratch meals on-the-go
  • A behind-the-scenes look at writing a book about freeze drying
  • What you need to set up a freeze drying station in your own home

I have been baking sourdough for over 13 years, so I have learned a thing or two along the way. You will find lots of sourdough educators out there who will equip you with technical and scientific knowledge about the process of sourdough, and while that certainly serves a purpose, I prefer to make sourdough simple and accessible for the everyday home cook. My goal is to remove the overwhelm and show you how homemade sourdough bread can easily fit into your life, even if you don’t think you have time. Join me for the first part in this sourdough Q&A series!

In this episode, we cover:

  • How to make your bread taste more or less sour
  • Can flour type change the taste of your final product?
  • Storage options for homemade bread
  • Why does my sourdough bread have a gooey texture?
  • My thoughts on when to store baked goods in the fridge
  • When and how to prepare a sourdough recipe ahead of time
  • Does it matter if I stir my starter down before measuring for a recipe?
  • Why variations in your starter are normal
  • Tips for storing your starter for long periods of time
  • How much time do I need to devote to making sourdough?
  • How the seasons impact sourdough baking
  • Does it make sense to bake sourdough for a small family?

Family entrepreneurship is such a unique and enriching way of life, but it is not without its challenges. Brad and Starla Walker of Abby’s Elderberry joined me on the podcast last year to share about the amazing benefits of elderberries, and today we are taking a look behind the scenes at what it is like to run a family farm business from home as a family of ten. How do they involve their children in the family business without burning the kids out? How do they divide responsibilities between home and the business? How does Starla manage a full plate as a mother of eight? Why is family business so impactful in the community? Join us for this inspiring conversation about what is possible when you link arms and take a risk.
