I love sharing about what I am doing in my home as a homemaker – the meals I’m cooking, the decor I’m bringing in, the systems I’m maintaining – but this episode goes even deeper into homemaking.  I am chatting with my friend and fellow blogger Andrea about the heart behind our homemaking pursuits.  As wives and mothers who have been learning and loving homemaking for well over a decade, we want to encourage you to see the beauty and creativity and opportunities that are available to you as a homemaker.  May this episode empower you to reject negative depictions of homemaking and to fully embrace the powerful calling of caring for your home and family.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Andrea’s journey into creating a home decor blog and where she is headed now

  • All about the incredible resource Andrea has created to mentor homemakers

  • Exploring the creativity available to us as homemakers

  • Keeping inspiration and beauty in your home during bleak winter months

  • The challenge of comparison and discontentment in our connected world

  • Acknowledging the uncomfortable truth about time management

  • Breaking out of overwhelm and growing your homemaking skills little by little

We have talked quite a bit on this podcast about minimalism and living clutter-free.  Even as someone who has been practicing the principles of minimalism for many years, I find that I have to constantly be aware of what is coming into our home so that it does not become overwhelming.  Robyn and I chat in this episode about developing a decluttering habit in the new year.  Rather than viewing decluttering as a giant one-time task we have to tackle, we should aim to make it part of our everyday mindset.  We live in a time and place when it is easier than ever to acquire items, so we have to be intentional about minimizing in order to experience peace in our homes.

In this episode, we cover:

  • The surprising role your age may play in your relationship to clutter

  • Addressing the emotional component of decluttering sentimental items

  • What minimalism can look like in a kids’ room

  • Moving past the feeling of overwhelm to get started decluttering

  • Tips for making decluttering a part of your everyday habits

  • How storage spaces contribute to the problem of overwhelm

  • Dealing with guilt when decluttering

  • Addressing some of the common psychological obstacles around decluttering

  • Choosing to make our homes reflect our current season of life

  • Finding the right balance of minimalism for your personality and your needs

  • The one thing you can do today to start a decluttering habit

ABOUT ROBYN

Robyn Buchanan is a mom, wife, nurse and youtube creator. She started her minimalism journey because she was overwhelmed coming home to a cluttered house after working in a chaotic emergency department.

Since decluttering, she not only uncovered her floors and surfaces, but also the deeper meanings behind our clutter, how clutter impacts our focus, why it’s so hard to declutter, and how life is freer without our stuff weighing us down.

Robyn lives on Vancouver Island in BC with her 3 teen boys and husband, 4 out of 5 of them have ADHD, including Robyn & her husband. She loves hiking, gardening and cooking along with Jane Austen, Monty Python and Harry Potter movies.

In the last decade since I was a young mother, the pace of motherhood has changed so much.  Even for mothers who stay home full-time with their children, there are endless opportunities and distractions available to us through our digital devices.  When Sarah realized she was running on the hamster wheel of busyness and distraction, she knew she wanted to make a change.  Through her own pursuit of simple, intentional, slow motherhood, Sarah began sharing her journey with other mothers who were longing for the same.  If striving and busyness have left you feeling burned out, this episode will inspire you to pursue simplicity and connection in your everyday life.

In this episode, we cover:

  • What led Sarah from living a fast-paced life to embracing slow motherhood

  • Managing the balance between living a slow and simple life and pursuing goals in business

  • Creating a simple slow living bucket list to keep your family centered

  • A day in the life of an intentional stay-at-home-mom

  • Embracing intentional connection in a way that fits your unique family

  • Is it possible to live a slow and simple life while keeping up with housework?

  • How minimalism makes space for a slow pace of life

  • Keeping your family priorities front and center when deciding what extracurricular activities to pursue

  • Adding intentionality to your days when it seems like every moment is accounted for

  • Examining the mental clutter in our digital world that contributes to overwhelm as moms

I heard Katie and her husband discussing this idea on their podcast, and I was intrigued by the thought that maybe a problem we face as homemakers is not that we don’t have enough time, but that we have too much of it.  In our conversation, Katie and I look at how modern conveniences save us time but have presented us with new challenges in terms of productivity and efficiency.  We hope this episode leaves you feeling encouraged that you can get things done with kids around, you can learn new skills, and you can become the kind of homemaker you dream of being.  Join us!

In this episode, we cover:

  • Being intentional as mothers of large families

  • How modern convenience has presented us new challenges

  • Filling up our time with soul satisfying pursuits

  • Can you really get stuff done with little kids around?

  • Avoiding boredom in motherhood and choosing fulfilling activities instead

  • The freedom of keeping a simplified home

  • Discerning what homemaking tasks are worth our time

  • Overcoming the mental barrier of learning new skills

As much as I love sharing about homemaking and homesteading and family life, I also love talking about online business!  Being a business owner is a huge part of my life, and it is so fun to talk to fellow moms and business owners about how they are managing the many responsibilities of this way of life.  Gillian teaches women about building and managing profitable online businesses that don’t take away from family life, and I am excited to bring you all along on this conversation as we chat about our own journeys as business owners and moms.

In this episode, we cover:

  • What led Gillian to pursuing online business instead of local business

  • The two main pitfalls people fall into when trying to make money online

  • Why the size of your platform does not necessarily determine your success in online business

  • Examining whether there is room in the market for your voice or product

  • Are there certain avenues you should definitely avoid in online business?

  • Differentiating your business in the market

  • Finding time to balance online business with the rest of mom life

In our modern world, it is easy to accept all of the latest conveniences and innovations that are offered to us.  At face value, they may seem to make our lives easier or better, but at what cost?  Jill Winger has been asking these kinds of critical questions for many years, and this questioning is the basis for her upcoming book on how many of the old-fashioned ways may actually be superior.  Our discussion is nuanced (we don’t throw out all modernity!) and serves as an interesting conversation starter as you weigh the costs and benefits of modern ways in your own life.

In this episode, we cover:

  • A historical perspective on the recent popularity of homesteading

  • Weighing the long-term costs and benefits of convenience

  • Factoring in the unexpected benefits of doing things the old-fashioned way

  • Deciding which conveniences to embrace and which old-fashioned ways to preserve

  • How to begin learning new skills when you feel overwhelmed

  • Looking with hindsight at the history of modernization and its impact

  • What modern conveniences we choose to live without

  • Learning new skills and pursuing goals with children at home

  • How to prioritize when your plate is full

  • Our perspectives on the rise of aesthetically focused homesteading content

The task of educating our children about real food has never been more important than it is now, but it can feel like swimming upstream in a culture saturated with highly processed and denatured foods.  Thankfully, we have access to more information and resources than ever before to educate ourselves and our children on this foundational topic.

My conversation with Liz of Homegrown Education dove into the nutritional philosophies of our homes as well as practical ways to incorporate more real food into our children’s diets.  Whether you have prioritized real food from your child’s first meal or you are just now beginning to make food swaps in your home, this episode will encourage you to keep making strides in this worthwhile journey.

In this episode, we cover:

  • Why it is important to teach our kids about real food and nutrition
  • How your home and cultural environment impacts your relationship with food
  • What “real food” actually means
  • Practical strategies for picky kids
  • Helping our kids get enough protein in their diets
  • What if a child doesn’t like the meal you’ve made?
  • A balanced approach to food outside of your home
  • Achieving healing through food
  • Making real food a reality in your home when you are on a tight budget
  • Shifting our mindset around the nutritional vs. monetary value of food

Homeschooling goes far beyond choosing curriculum and planning field trips.  It is equally as important to establish a firm grasp on why we are homeschooling and what our homeschool philosophy is.

I so enjoyed this conversation with Angela where we had a chance to get honest about the ups and downs of our homeschooling journeys.  We chatted about important mindset shifts we have had to embrace along the way and old paradigms we are moving away from.

Are you considering homeschooling but you are fearful?  Are you in the thick of it and need some encouragement to keep going?  Join us for this inspiring conversation!

In this episode, we cover:

  • Making schooling decisions based on each individual child’s needs
  • Finding the balance between giving yourself grace and pushing yourself
  • Tips for keeping little ones occupied while homeschooling older siblings
  • Freeing yourself from expectations and embracing the flexible schedule of homeschooling
  • Encouraging learning to extend beyond textbooks and worksheets into valuable life skills
  • Recognizing perfectionism in our kids and helping them learn through failure
  • Reframing our perspective about what is most important for our children to learn
  • Math curriculum reviews for kids that struggle with math
  • Protecting our kids’ mindsets around their ability to learn
  • What if you are nervous to homeschool?
  • How will homeschooled kids turn out?
