Today we are joined by Jean Muenchrath, mountaineer, escaper of death, author, and spiritual being. Simply put, Jean's story is remarkable. Jean gives us a play by play of the time she nearly died after catastrophic fall near Mt Whitney in winter conditions. She walks us through not only this harrowing tale, but the long process to physical, emotional, and spiritual recovery, the subject of her book If I Live Until Morning: A True Story of Adventure, Tragedy and Transformation.

Chaunce and Badger wrap up the show with some listener emails, Poop Stories, and a new segment One Line Movie Reviews. This is our last in-person podcast until the apocalypse blows over, so please do savor the flavor of this one.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are once again flipping the script. This episode is dedicated to all things COVID-19. We chat with a pair of experts on infectious disease and epidemiology. Dr. Amesh Adalja is an infectious disease specialist at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Health Security. And Jagdish Khubchandani is a Professor of Health Science at Ball State University with a PhD in Health Education and Epidemiology. Both of our experts share their opinion on the latest data surrounding this virus, including the million dollar question of when they think it will be safe to resume our backpacking ways.

We also are joined by a pair of 2020 NOBO turned NOGO thru-hikers (and Trek contributors), one from the AT, one from the PCT, to share their experiences of how this pandemic played out from their perspectives. Taylor Frint had only been on trail for two days before making the decision to get off, while John Mecklin was a few hundred miles into his hike when shit really started hitting the fan.

Also---it's worth stating here---after today's episode, we will likely drop the coronavirus subject for a while. There's plenty of information out there regarding this virus, and although we're not about to pretend like it isn't impacting everything, we're hoping to provide a venue where you can go to escape the firehose of doomsday information. The reason for today's episode is that we wanted to provide some expertise on this subject and how it pertains to backpacking along with shine a spotlight on those who made the difficult decision to hit the indefinite pause button on their hikes.

Backpacker Radio is making good on their promise to get weird. Today we bring you a drunk Q&A. Backpacker Radio's new intern, Elise Ott, navigates us through a series of questions, including COVID-19, how we're handling the self-quarantining, a lot of poop related subjects, thru-hiking purism, and much more. At the top of the show, one of Chaunce's friends gives us the poop story to end all poop stories. This one is our most feral podcasts to date. Because that's what you do during an apocalypse.

We're joined by Sandi Marra, the president and CEO at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. As noted in our previous podcast, the news and guidelines around COVID-19 and the trail system has been evolving rapidly. At the time of the previous recording, the ATC asked people to postpone their thru-hikes. Since that recording, the ATC has increased the severity of their recommendations- urging people to avoid the Appalachian Trail altogether, even for day hikes.

Today's interview will largely center around that subject, including how the ATC arrived to this decision, when Sandi predicts that the trail will be safe to hike and backpack again, amongst many other Coronavirus related questions.

  • Sandi Marra of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy
    • Why was this decision reached to ask all people to stay off the Appalachian Trail? Both in the context of backpacking and day hiking.
    • What does she have to say to those who are still on the trail?
    • What guidance does she have for those who want to get off but are having trouble finding resources?
    • When does she foresee the trail reopening?
    • Her thoughts on hiking in general right now?
  • The Trek will be helping to put together a resource for those who are looking for a ride from the trail in the near future.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we are joined by Erik Schlimmer. Erik might be the hiker's edition of Forest Gump, in that he's somehow squeezed five lifetimes worth of events into his four plus decades on this earth. If you're a fan of the Adirondack, you are in luck, because Erik is not only one of the most experienced hikers in this region, but also a historian of the range at large. We also learn all about toponyms, including, what that word means, and he offers some truly fascinating examples. Erik also shares about his time as a Coach on the show MTV Made, his time as a paratrooper, and his thriving career as a bird catcher. Prepare to be filled with entertainment and knowledge.

We also dive into the history of peak bagging in the northeast, introduce a new segment- Fox News, learn about ultralight vibrators, how to ask an employer for time off to thru-hike, and wrap it up with a listener poop story. Also, at the top of the show, Badger offers his two cents on the latest with the Coronavirus pandemic and how it relates to thru-hikers.

The Cinnamon Connection is joined by ultra running legend, Courtney Dauwalter. For those who might not be into the ultra-running scene, Courtney is an absolute powerhouse long distance runner, with a young race resume that's hard to fathom, including wins at the Moab 240 (which the 2nd place finisher was more than 10 hours behind her), the Javelina Jundred 100K, Run Rabbit Run 100-mile race *twice*, Western States 100, Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc- referred to as the super bowl of ultramarathons, amongst others. Courtney is incredibly humble, Chaunce and Badger had to act as her hype team throughout the episode, a blast to chat with, and a fellow Goldenite. There are some gems in this conversation, including when Chaunce told Courtney her poop story (like a good movie, it's even better the second time), how Courtney sees giraffes and flying eels on trail, that time she went blind, and how she continues to chisel away at her pain cave.

Chaunce and Badger wrap up the episode with a triple crown of spring things that make us tingle, we plan a soon to be thru-hiker's going away party, and of course, another listener poop story.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we are joined by five sixths of the Strawbridge Family. The Strawbridges successfully thru-hiked the PCT SOBO in 2018 with four kids in tow- ages 11, 13, 14, and 17. We chat about everything you can dream of regarding hiking as a family, including how they handled school, gear, their pace, everyone's emotional and physical well being, and so on. Vince and Monica, aka mom and dad, are fact checked by Georgie, Henry, and June, the youngest three of the four kids. This is a fun interview, Chaunce and I laughed in excess, and hopefully serves as inspiration for young families looking to inject more adventure into their lives. We close out the show with a triple crown of ways to pass time on trail and of course, more listener poop stories.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, we are changing things up a bit. Today's show is dedicated to all things girl stuff. We've kicked aside the segments and dove straight into everything to do with thru-hiking as a woman. In addition to Chaunce, we are joined in studio by former guest, guest co-host, and listener favorite, Weezer, along with Chaunce's AT buddy and Trek Vlogger, Fireball. These badass backcountry gals enlighten us on everything from managing periods on trail, to dealing with creepy guys, how they dealt with dangers- including the anticipation of danger vs. what the experience on trail, birth control, sex, hygiene, pee rags, and so on. This turned into a marathon episode, and I think this will be a fun and informative listen for everyone, though especially our lady listeners.

Today the Cinnamon Connection is joined by Wild Amanda aka Naps. Naps is the only person I've met who's hiked the entire PCT with her dog, Frank. We go down the rabbit hole on what it takes to thru-hike the PCT with a dog, including recommended gear, how she handled Frank's food and water, how she curtailed her hiking schedule to best suit Franks needs, and more.

Naps' PCT thru-hike was the ultimate display of Murphy's Law, as she dealt with a broken nose, plantar fasciitis, food poisoning, hiking induced heartburn, trench foot, heat rash, altitude sickness, and of course, some very solid poop stories, figuratively speaking.

We wrap up the show with the triple crown of Ben and Jerry's flavors, chips worth going to prison for, and another listener poop story.

We interrupt your normally scheduled Backpacker Radio content to bring you a sneak peak of a brand new podcast launched by The Trek in partnership with BadCat Media, called, The Attempt. The Attempt follows Benjamin Drachman during his *attempted* SOBO thru-hike of the PCT in 2019. The show is produced by Julia Drachman- and no that last name is not a coincidence, Julia is Ben's older sister. What may shock you about this show is its production value. And by that, I mean, it has production value. We're all about trying new things here at The Trek. In other words, if This American Life and Trail Correspondents had a baby, this podcast would be that baby. Instead of further explaining what this show is, let's give you a Costco sample size for you to chew on. As soon as I shut the hell up, you'll get the first episode of this show. If you like what you hear, I encourage you to head to the thetrek.co/theattempt to find more episodes (the first three are already out) or simply search for "The Attempt" in your preferred podcast platform. We are joined by legendary PCT trail angel, Donna, L-Rod Saufley of Hiker Heaven. Donna comes by her trail name, L-Rod, short for lightning rod, very honestly. She's exceptionally outspoken, a ball of energy, and has a deep passion for the Pacific Crest Trail and its community. We hear all about her time serving as a trail angel to PCT hikers for more than two decades. This conversation is fun, engaging, educational, and we dip our toe into some controversial subjects.

Chaunce and I wrap-up the show with an update on the latest from Hiker Heaven, how you can get a free trip to the moon in a likely very prostitute-y way, a triple crown of stereotypes you meet on trail, and we are blessed with another listener poop story.

We are joined by "Crazy Jack" Northam. Crazy Jack has earned his name by summiting Mt. Whitney (the highest peak in the United States' lower 48) nearly 200 times, an endeavor he didn't begin until the ripe age of 50 years. Today, jack now 72 years old and still going strong.

He regales us with tales of his many ascents up his favorite mountain, why he chooses to summit the same peak, his yo-yo hikes on Whitney, his climbs beginning at the nearby town of Lone Pine, and how he stumbled into some seriously historic butter. Chaunce and I close out the show by highlighting the top shelters on the Appalachian Trail, give an official ruling on the best Dorito flavor, do the Triple Crown of food items remaining in your bag when get to town, and get into a new recurring segment, Listener Poop Stories.

Today we are joined by comedy legend, Kevin Nealon. In case you've been living under a rock for for the last 30 years, Kevin Nealon is famous for his years on Saturday Night Live, his character on Weeds, he's a popular standup comedian, he's been in a slew of movies, and he's now the host of his own YouTube show, Hiking with Kevin. Kevin insisted that we do the interview in the back of our camper van, and he regales us with tales from his time at SNL, how one of his popular sketches almost turned into a musical produced by Arnold Schwarzenegger, his favorite Chris Farley story, that time he helped deliver his son, along with his favorite hiking spots around Los Angeles.

Chaunce and I also get into the dumbest items we've carried on a thru-hike, which way to wipe, we have a triple crown of music to get you through a miserable climb, and get some much needed horse facts.

#54 | The Trans-Catalina Trail

88 min
View

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, the Cinnamon Connection talk all things Trans Catalina Trail (TCT), which Chaunce and Badger thru-hiked a month(ish) ago. We give a day-by-day rundown of the hike, including that time Chaunce hid in a bear locker when a bison stampeded through our camp, how we pirated our way onto a sailboat, and give some non-obvious tips on hiking the TCT. We also talk about the dumbest things we've forgotten to pack on a backpacking trip, debate the joy of Christmas music, how flashing your bunghole to the sun is good for your health, and answer some common gear questions.

Today we are joined by Anitra Kass, aka Nitro, who's a triple crowner and the PCTA's Southern California Regional Representative. Anitra is a wealth of information on all things PCT and conservation. We talk about the new permitting changes for the Sierra and for southbounders, some of the biggest threats to the trail, how to best get involved as a volunteer for the PCT, CrossFit, and more. Chaunce and Badger give a peek into their first aid kits, we have a new triple crown of segment, and get some advice from a listener on how to ease kids into the backcountry without annoying others.

#51 | The Andersons of Casa de Luna

95 min

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by legendary PCT trail angels, Joe and Terrie Anderson of Casa De Luna. Much like the PCT itself, this conversation is fun, winding, long, and you'll still be left wanting more when it's all over. We talk about how they got into trail angeling, some of their favorite stories over the many decades of their running Casa de Luna, why they're closing up shop, and much more. We've also got some suggestions for staying in shape over the winter, some Trek propaganda, and a mailbag in which we give a conclusive answer to "when is a nero a nero?".

#50 | The Long Trail + Chef Corso

113 min
View

Today, we dissect Badger's recent thru-hike on the Long Trail. We run the gamut on this little bruiser of a trail, including its terrain, the towns, how it changes after splitting with the AT, resupply strategies, Badger's gear (and what he'd change if he were to do it again), favorite shelters, and more. We also go into the results of a survey we ran on amongst Long Trail finisher which highlights their favorite towns, restaurants, shelters, and gear used. Last but not least, Chaunce and Badger chat with Chef Corso of MONTyBOCA. Chef Corso is a classically trained chef who gives the Cinnamon Connection some pointers on improving their piss pour backcountry meal game- without using a dehydrator.

Matt "Pretzel" Mason is a triple crowner, trail runner, sober hiker, former Mountain Crossings employee, wildland firefighter, gear snob, and bona fide character. His beard game is strong, and his opinions are stronger. This is our longest episode to date, and it promises to entertain throughout.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are once again joined by our pal, Jeff Garmire, aka Legend. We catch up on all of his trail feats since he was last on the show including his ridiculous sub 6 day unsupported FKT on the Long Trail, how he messed around and set the Pinhoti FKT, his new book, Free Outside: A Trek Against Time and Distance, and much more. We have some Trek Propaganda and introduce a brand new segment- Trail Trivia, the drinking game. Crack open a PBR and play along, if you dare.

The Cinnamon is Connected for good. Or for bad. But undoubtedly, for the foreseeable future. Chaunce and Badger go deep on the rest of Chaunce's Appalachian Trail thru-hike, including untold poo stories, her take on New Hampshire and Maine, her legendary chafing, how she gained weight while thru-hiking, suggestions for the ATC, and how she plans to combat post thru-hike depression now that she's back in the "real world". We chat about Badger's recent hikes on the Wind River High Route and Pfiffner Traverse. We introduce a brand new segment, Unpopular Opinions and have a Patent Pending. In addition to hiking pretty much every trail in the United States and some abroad, she's also served in the Peace Corps, interned at the Smithsonian, and presently serves as the coordinator at the Oregon Desert Trail. Today we are joined by Clay Bonnyman Evans, aka Pony, who's an author, long time Trek Writer, AT and Colorado Trail thru-hiker, and someone with a deep passion for the trail and its culture. We touch on a wide array of subjects in this episode, including some controversial topics such as the Twelve Tribes and Yellow Deli, Inchworm's tragic death on the AT, bringing a gun on a thru-hike, YouTube scam artists, how privilege pertains to thru-hiking, barfing on poo and way more. Clay is a ball of energy. This episode will likely stir up some fun debate.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, I am joined by recent Western States 100 winner, Clare Gallagher. Not only is Clare a world-class ultra runner, she's also a very vocal and passionate environmental activist, Princeton graduate, Patagonia athlete, and all around powerhouse. She shares how she was able to pull off the most important victory in her young ultra running career, the two weeks she spent hanging out with Tommy Caldwell in the arctic leading up the race, all the while doing everything she can to save the world. Literally. I touch briefly on my hike of the Oregon Coast Trail, we have a trail propaganda featuring how to thru-hike as a petite woman, and much more.

She's baaaaack. Sort of. Halfway. At this year's Trail Days, we caught up with Juliana Chauncey aka Chaunce, who was roughly half way into her AT thru-hike. She regales us with tales from the first 1,000 miles of her trek, including what has surprised her, how her gear system has held up, how it's differed from her PCT hike, and talks about that time she awoke to a stranger humming and dancing atop of her hammock. We do a Triple Crown of Highlights from the southern half of the Appalachian Trail, featuring Jabba, who jumps in and out throughout the show, get a bot's analysis of Backpacker Radio, and get our freshest trail poop story in the history of the podcast.

This is a fun reunion show and just a reminder that the cinnamon is still connected.

We are once again joined by Backpacker Radio's most invasive species, otherwise known as The Real Hiking Viking. We hear all about his two month long stint on the Jordan Trail. He tells us all about this trek, the region, its people, the food, and the experience altogether. We also chat about what went wrong on his Long Trail winter thru-hike attempt, and how he opted to swallow his pride instead of putting his life at risk. I briefly touch on thru-hiking with your dog as part of today's Trek Propaganda, and we close out the show with a triple crown of new gear that we're excited to test.

We chat all about his previous year, which was arguably busier than anyone in the backpacking world, including his Great Western Loop, a 7,000 mile hike, and his recent Arizona Trail FKT. We go way deep on both of these hikes, when we're not filling the airwaves with laughter. We also unveil a new hiker of the week and a brand new segment, which will also likely be retired after this episode.

In 2015, Scott Jurek was the most talked about person on the Appalachian Trail, even the trail community at large. As soon as the legendary ultrarunner announced that he was bringing his talents to Appalachia, a flurry of fanfare and press followed suit. Though his record has been broken a pair of times since, the swell of attention has yet to be matched. Today Jabba and Badger sit down with Scott Jurek and his wife and head crew member, Jenny Jurek, to learn about this FKT, what the undertaking was like from each of their perspectives, how it's prepared them for parenthood, their new book "North: Finding My Way While Running the Appalachian Trail", and much more. We also get an introduction to our newest Thru-Hiker of the Week, "Sochi", who's attempting to become the first amputee to thru-hike the Pacific Crest Trail.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, Badger is joined by Jon Schwarze, aka Airborne. Despite this being his first thru-hike, last year Airborne became just the fifth person to yo-yo the Pacific Crest Trail (which is to thru-hike the same trail in both directions in less than one year). We go balls deep on everything that went into this trek, including the differences between his NOBO and SOBO hike, his gear, his bizarre and demanding diet, what it was like meeting Scott Williamson, and how his background (despite having limited backpacking experience) played a major role in his success. We also get into some Trek Propaganda, two lies and a truth, a mailbag, and more.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, recorded at Wayfinder, Badger sits down with Weezer, a 2018 PCT hiker with one hell of a story. We talk about what it's like to thru-hike in the PCT's bubble as a sober person, an incredibly sad life event she had to endure while on trail, and how the trail has played a role in her metamorphosis to a better life. We get a new thru-hiker of the week and close out with a triple crown of PCT restaurants, joined by special guest Puma. This is an emotionally dense, yet ultimately, uplifting show.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, Smiles and I sit down with author Ken Ilgunas. To put it simply, Ken is a guy who marches to the beat of his own drum. We talk at length about his time hiking the length of the Keystone XL Pipeline both where it was developed and supposed to be developed, where had to not only trespass for much of this hike, but knock on complete strangers doors for help on many occasions. He shares his take on public vs. private land, why we should have hiking access on private land, the threats to public land, and how this is handled in other countries. Ken also shares about his time living out of his van, before #vanlife was even a thing. We close out the show with a new thru-hiker of the week, some Trek propaganda, and a new segment, two lies and a truth. This is another juicy show. So strap in.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by adventuring legend, author, blogger and backcountry guide, Andrew Skurka. This is a very meaty show, we touch on a huge number of subjects including his ridiculous backpacking endeavors, his favorite backcountry routes, his bear bagging recommendations, the current state of rain gear, specific gear recommendations for an AT or PCT thru-hike, and so much more. Strap in, this is a fun interview filled with a ton of valuable insight. We also debut a new segment, featuring a popular YouTube personality by the name of Second Chance Hikes, and close out the show with a triple crown of survival items.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, we're joined by Peter Downing, a modern day renaissance man. We chat about his history as an ultra runner (including his four wins at the Buena Vista 50), his time in the Peace Corps, his career as a lawyer, and now, his latest undertaking, Suffer Better, a community of ultra runners whose mission is to give back. It's a fun, freewheeling convo where Peter teaches us the ins and outs of the ultra world.

We touch on what it's like to have cold feet before a thru-hike and we get into a lewd edition of Would You Rather.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, we are joined by Gummy Bear, a 2018 PCT hiker and all around awesome dude. We do a deep dive on his experience of being a gay and plus size hiker in the trail community. We chat some about his upcoming Arizona Trail hike. Chaunce and I deliver the PCT class of 2019 a warning for what they can expect to see in the Sierra this year and why you might want to consider hiking southbound. We do a triple crown of things to freak out about before leaving for a thru-hike. Basically we touch on all the reasons why you should never leave your house (not actually). This is a meaty show, so find a comfortable place to sit, lay, or meander down the trail.

  • Sawyer Micro vs. Sawyer Squeeze Video
  • The Sierra is snowy
  • Chaunce's PCT 2017 Video
  • As It Happens
  • Start interview with Evan Haut aka Gummy Bear
  • Trail name origin
  • What drew you to hike the PCT - love of travel, liked camping better than partying aspects of festivals he had been going to
  • Gay pride bandana attached to pack - important to have it on there after talking to other hikers in town who were hesitant/uncomfortable being open - prior to flag, felt like only gay person on trail, post flag, had a lot of people opening up and talking to him about it - 'was nice to know they had someone they could talk to about it'
  • Discouragement and doubt around ability to be successful based on his weight - people becoming more supportive once he reached KM bc they stopped doubting as much
  • Hard to find clothing for his size (3XL)
    • Columbia and New Balance do good jobs of accommodating big/tall people
  • Highest mile day: 24
  • How he trained - day hiking, this year: 3-4hrs a day at the gym (quit job and just training now)
  • Section hike of the PCT - what's done and what's left
  • Water carries for a slower/heavier hiker: how much he carried, obstacles, having to skip sections due to inability to carry enough water
  • Deciding to be a section hiker, and feelings around that
  • Clothing carried
  • Things he would've changed if he could re-prep for PCT
    • Start in trail runners, doing the trail sooner - wouldn't have had the motivation to train the way he needed to do it bc he wouldn't have known what he was signing up for
  • Fitness vs budget - one of the biggest downfalls yo hiking slow
  • Vegan on trail apart from beef jerky
  • Section hikers were less arrogant, but didn't realize that until Washington
  • Reasons why other hikers ask about start dates

Today's show is a special edition, an experiment, and a community-sourced show, all rolled into one giant tortilla, hiker trash style. A few months ago, we put a call out to The Trek's bloggers and vloggers to share their top tips for someone who's about to embark on a thru-hike. Tis the season.

As you will see, this advice runs the gamut, and can often even be contradictory to one another. The reason for this is simple, there is no one single approach to successfully thru-hiking. That said, I do think there's tremendous value in listening to the insight of those who've walked the walk, as you can pick and choose what resonated with you, test different approaches, keep what works, and discard the rest.

In today's special Valentine's Day episode of Backpacker Radio, we sit down with Grizzly and Jenna, a couple due to hike the Pacific Crest Trail and Colorado Trail this year. We learn about how they plan to keep the love alive in the midst of 3,000 miles of backpacking. We also breakdown how to hike 30 miles in a day, and talk a whole lot about orgies on trail. It's a very sexy show, so grab the chocolate and the oysters, and pull up a seat.

A life changing adventure is merely a decision away. That's the takeaway lesson from today's interview with Bethany Hughes, who just a few years ago, was running the books at her local H&R Block and miserable for it. Fast forward to December 2018- she just completed trekking the length of South America- just the first piece of her goal to travel the length of the Americas by non-motorized means. We learn all about this adventure and all the the incredible stories and lessons that come with it. We also get into some Trek Propaganda featuring the top footwear amongst 2018 Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, the triple crown of under-appreciated gear items, and a listener enlightens us about Norwegians preferred alcohol.

  • Possibly paddling McKenzie river up to Alaska then following the pipelines to the northern most point
  • How she got this idea - back to Kansas City working at HR Block and had moment reading where it came to her - grew up and was raised in the mountains of South America, spent time in North America running sled dogs in Alaska

Starting a thru-hike without any prior backpacking experience, although not entirely rare, is a brave endeavor. To string three consecutive thru-hikes back-to-back-to-back is a whole other level of insanity. Today's guest accomplished just that. Without any prior backpacking experience, Mike "Kickstand" Papadatos decided that instead of starting with the AT, PCT, or CDT, that he'd string them all together in a calendar year. The Paprika Pals sat down to learn what inspired him to jump headfirst into the world of extreme long distance backpacking, the challenges he faced along the way, and the evolution of his gear throughout the journey. We then touch on some thru-hiker transformations in The Trek Propaganda segment and learn about the trio's Triple Crown Of hangover remedies.

This is it. The end. Our final episode of the season.

A thru-hike is- typically speaking- a half year adventure. In the midst of this journey, that feels like a very long time. Certainly long enough to adapt to an entirely different way of life. In the spectrum of one's life, however, it's just a blink of an eye (God willing). Which is why I think today's episode might be my favorite yet.

Today we hear from our hikers a couple weeks (or more) removed from their treks. We learn how the lessons and habits of their former lives have bled over into "the real world". Of course soaking up the adventure for what it is, while it's happening, is of utmost importance- but in my perspective, it's how these hikes alter someone's world long after they've left the trail that's of most interest.

Our correspondents reflects back on their hikes and the chasm between this former world and their current.

And lastly- we'll hear from Jeffrey Garmire aka Legend, who recently completed The Great Western Loop. His update is brief, but the emotion is strong, you can hear it especially in his sign-off.

In today's show, we hear from:

Today's guest is very fitting for our 23rd episode, since she is arguably the Michael Jordan of backpacking. In a world where setting just one FKT (fastest known time) is a lifetime achievement, Heather "Anish" Anderson has set the self-supported FKT on the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Arizona Trail. She is also in a small, exclusive club of triple triple crowners- those who've hiked each of the triple crown trails three times each. And most recently, she became the newest member of the Calendar Triple club, to hike all three triple crown trails in a single calendar year. And this is just the tip of her backpacking resume iceberg. In other words, Anish is the GOAT, and we were blessed to borrow a few minutes of her time to talk about her current 8,000 mile journey. Additionally, we get into a bit of Trek propaganda, get into the 2nd edition of Patent Pending, and we hear from friend of the show Steven "Twinkle" Shattuck, as he dirtbags across the globe with his wife.
