The psychology of typography - Sarah Hyndman

63 min Transcript
View

"The more we learn, the more we realize we don't know. We can only judge the world from our own viewpoint and our own experience."

How often do you pause and ponder about the words you read? In this thought-provoking episode, graphic designer and author Sarah Hyndman invites us to explore the psychology of type through her experimental and multisensory approach. With a decade of groundbreaking research, Sarah challenges the notion that typography is a niche interest, making it fun and accessible for everyone.~

From matching scents to typefaces to discovering how expensive branding can influence the perceived taste of chocolate, Sarah's interactive events and installations reveal the invisible yet profound impact words have on our thoughts, feelings, and actions. Her journey is a testament to the power of curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to interrogate mistakes – the secret sauce that fuels growth and innovation.

Key Takeaways:

  • Embrace naivety and enthusiasm; they are powerful catalysts for exploration and learning.
  • Interrogate mistakes; they offer unexpected insights and opportunities to challenge assumptions.
  • Make the invisible visible by fostering awareness of the subliminal processes that shape our experiences.
  • Relinquish the need to be "right" and listen to diverse perspectives; they can open your mind.
  • Persistence and a genuine love for your craft are essential for sustained creativity and growth.

Five Minute Magic Pt.5 - Power of One

3 min Transcript
View

Welcome to five minute magic from Creativity For Sale Podcast. A quick fire episode, sharing tips and tricks from the pages of the book of the same title. Yes. Creativity for sale.

Every week I'll be sharing one or two ideas that can give you. And actionable take away for your creative career, your business, or just the food for thought for the weekend ahead. These tapes are taken from the audio book, and you can find a link to the full version below. ~

In this episode, we open a second chapter of the book titled Power of One, which is Power of You. The message of this book is that you can build a life changing, even world changing career and business around what you already have. A collection of creative particles that make you unique.

This chapter starts with four, in my opinion, very powerful questions.

What do you want? How much do you want it? Who do you want to be? And how good do you want to be?

Have a listen and have a think.

"Happiness is key to a successful life and business. Having that solid grounding is so important for me personally."

Craig Black takes us behind the scenes of his inspiring creative journey - from professional soccer player to graphic designer to world-renowned acrylic pouring artist.~

In this candid conversation with creativity guru Radim Malinic, Craig shares the intentional mindset and focused work ethic that led him to find immense success on his own terms.

Though Craig hit a high point designing the iconic typeface for his hometown soccer club Glasgow Rangers FC, he knew it was time to evolve. From honing his craft in secret to launching his acrylic fusion pieces in a strategic campaign timed with the World Cup, Craig progressed with purpose.

Now a sought-after visual artist collaborating with massive brands, Craig remains grounded. He discusses getting in the zone during live pouring performances, always pushing his acrylic art to new levels, and building a flexible lifestyle business with his wife.

Key Takeaways:

  • Success takes years of intentional development and discipline behind the scenes. Put in your 10,000 hours!
  • When you wholeheartedly believe in yourself, others will too. Be your own biggest cheerleader.
  • Evolve your craft before external forces push you. Move onto new creative challenges on your own terms.
  • Tunnel vision focus unlocks flow states, whether on a soccer pitch or pouring acrylics. Zero in on the task at hand.
  • Build a lifestyle business that allows creativity and family to flourish together. Stay grounded in what matters most.

In this episode, I want to address creativity's marketing problem. You don't get to see bus drivers, nurses, or construction engineers being recruited with slogans that say, Hey, come and ride his bus. And you'll never work a day in your life. Yet creative world cannot pay that way on the outside.

When creative work clicks, it's the best feeling in the world. But it can be quickly followed by the dose of reality. That's less rose-tinted. So today we talk about the, to do what you love myth. Enjoy.

Today's episode is called how selling creativity becomes a business. And it's a section from the book, which elaborates on the point of how we title ourselves because the titles come over with a mindset of how we perceive ourselves, how we carry ourselves.

And sometimes our titles could be misleading because from experience, according to some freelancers, it doesn't necessarily mean that people understand what you do and how you do it.

How we label ourselves really helps with the fact how we can perceive what we do and how we can explain it and how we can be found by others who might be able to commission us for the work that we do.

Today's episode is called Creative Bravery. And it's a part of the first chapter of the book, which nearly didn't exist. My first editor didn't like it and she didn't want to keep it in a book. But I rallied and made sure it stayed and it somehow turned out to be one of the most shared sections of the book.

I'm very happy that I stood my ground. I'm not always right on these things, but Creative Bravery kind of stands for the fact that, you need to start somewhere.

You need to start somewhere and make the first line, draw the  first circle, make the first step. And it will take you somewhere to the places and ... who cares, what people think. So I'm not going to spoil the rest. Enjoy.
