Eamon Waddington is a passionate bowhunter in Australia. As he grew in his bowhunting career and started growing more and more on social media, he constantly had folks reaching out to him asking him all the normal questions - how do I get into it, where do I go, how do I cook the meat. He figured - man there is definitely a niche that is needing to be filled - from that Broadside Hunting was created - an opportunity for people to learn how to hunt, butcher, cook, in a hosted environment. He tells his story to Robbie and explains why he is so passionate about this.

We’re keeping this lady's full name anonymous, and as a result Robbie gets to delve deep into a discussion with a private landowner within Cabaneros National park, where hunting has been banned. They talk about the system, what challenges she faces, and what that means for the land. This podcast is going to be followed up with several videos towards the 3rd Quarter / 4th Quarter of 2024 in which the full Cabaneros documentary will be complete and released for everyone to see. Here is a question floating around out there – are mountain lions and bobcats threatened and endangered in Colorado? This question is a valid one. We currently hunt both species in Colorado and if their respective populations were threatened in anyway or endangered, then all the sportsmen and women in Colorado and those non-residents that hunt them would say absolutely, we shouldn’t be hunting them. This is an incredibly important question to answer specifically in light of the potential ballot initiative being moved forward through signature gathering in the State of Colorado right now to ban the hunting of mountain lions and bobcats. So what’s the truth? South African wildlife researcher Willem Briers Louw joins the Blood Origins podcast to talk about his role in wildlife research and monitoring. One could argue that Willem has the best job in the world (or more likely the most romantic job in the world). Flying around in helicopters, helping dart elephants, collaring lions and elephants to camera traps, to a recent research program started out the 24 lions project to the 100 lions project and more. Erik Verreynne, has been a wildlife veterinary surgeon in Botswana for the last twenty years. He is a non hunter and wildlife conservationist on the front lines of the information war around hunting because of where he lives and the work he does around elephant conservation and conservation sustainability in Botswana. This conversation is probably one of the first conversations around changing Botswana elephant populations with someone who has been in Botswana for 20 years and has seen the changes with his own eyes since he has been involved in the wildlife conservation game.

The question was posed to me: why do you Robbie differentiate between hunting and photographic tourism? Are they not the same thing - i.e., tourism? What's the difference? When you take a step back and really examine what the definition of tourism is - it's simply defined as visiting a location for a specific reason - whether that is to take a photo, take a drink, hunt an animal. It's all the same thing. There is an economic endeavor tied to that activity and at the end of the day both consumptive (i.e., hunting) and non-consumptive (i.e., photo tourism) from a wildlife perspective should have one common goal from their profits - wildlife conservation. If that's true, and they are honest to that goal, then there isn't really a difference. So here's my answer ...

Though the motivation of the individual may not be based in conservation, the action of the individual is conservation, though it may not be the direct motivation. What is conservation? Preservation, sustaining, not wasteful loss of a resource, that has a plan to its management in order to maximize biodiversity. That is a bastardized combination of the Oxford dictionary and the Merriam Websters dictionary; it paints the picture of what conservation actually is - which then begs the question does hunting conform with that definition? So here's my answer ...

The question that was posed to me was are Forest Elephants Endangered? I think the question was more writ large: Are elephants endangered? The answer technically by IUCN and CITES standards is yes, all elephant species in the world are endangered, but practically on the ground the answer for the African Savannah Elephant maybe answered a little differently. Since 2021 the African Forest Elephant has been reclassified as a separate species and the first comprehensive survey of their population has occurred. It's a very secretive species that lives in the dense tropical forests of Gabon, Congo, and West Africa, where poaching and habitat destruction are the two pressures causing population constraints and decline. The question was posed to me - do so-called ‘grip and grins’ hurt hunting? This is a fantastic question with a complicated answer. We get hit with this question or thought every single day - does the grip and grin picture or the "trophy" picture help or hurt hunting? The answer is that it depends. There are certainly things that are portrayed today through social media that are not good for hunting. The picture with the animal should reflect respect for wildlife, respect for the animal, show a semblance of animal welfare, and also most importantly provide context to the entire process. Robbie takes the time to dive deep and explain in this short, 5-minute episode of Short Truths!

The question was posed to me - what do I think about corner crossings? If you are not familiar with the United States and public lands, the landscape typically out west looks exactly like a checkerboard of private and public land. Often public land is opposite one another where their corners touch, and you can literally step from one piece of public to another. That is called corner crossing. If you are reading this - you are likely thinking what's wrong with that? Well it's illegal to do. However, this has recently been challenged in Wyoming where a group of hunters did it, got charged, it went all the way up to the Supreme Court of Wyoming and they were found not-guilty, essentially paving the way to make corner crossing legal. So here's my answer on what I think about Corner Crossings!

The question that was posed was - why do you guys always hunt old males? The question was indirectly why do you always hunt the things with the biggest horns / antlers? There is a lot of questions around why hunters hunt old males? It's often tied to the moniker of trophy hunting. You guys are always after the biggest horns or the biggest antlers. Ok?
