Welcome to the latest episode of the Astronomy Daily Podcast, your primary source for today's Space and Astronomy News. I'm your host, Tim Gibbs, bringing a dash of nostalgic reminiscence from the Apollo 11 era. We've come a long way since then, as today's story about NASA's ongoing asteroid exploration will prove. Our special segment today focuses on NASA's Johnson Space Center's eagerly anticipated analysis of an asteroid sample. The sample, sourced from the asteroid Bennu, promises key insights into the formation of our solar system and Earth. These remnants of the early solar system, now en route to Earth, are a treasure trove for scientists aiming to decipher the building blocks of life. Nicole Lunning, the lead OSIRIS-Rx sample curator, has the crucial task of preserving the purity and integrity of the sample, and separating it for detailed study. The sample, which weathered a collection compartment valve failure, will arrive in the Utah desert on September 24, carrying an estimated 8.8 ounces (250 grams) of invaluable material. In other news, a power outage at NASA temporarily disrupted communications with the International Space Station (ISS). The power cut occurred amidst an upgrade work at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Joel Montelbano, the Space Station Program Manager, assured that neither the astronauts nor the ISS were ever in any danger. The issue was quickly resolved, and normal operations were resumed. Don't forget to tune into Space Nuts, our parent podcast, available at spaceknuts.io or bytes.com. Engage with our community by joining our Facebook page, Space Knuts Podcast Group. Look forward to more space stories with Steve Dunkey on Mondays and Tim Gibbs on Fridays. Thank you for joining us on this cosmic journey. We'll catch you in our next episode. Until then, clear skies!

Welcome to another episode of Astronomy Daily! On this episode, Steve Dunkley takes us on an astronomical adventure through recent discoveries and events. As we commemorate the 54th anniversary of Apollo 11's lunar landing, we also delve into several intriguing stories, including the detection of a peculiar radio signal pulsing every 22 minutes for over three decades. We discuss last year's historic NASA mission that managed to alter an asteroid's course with the DART probe, resulting in a hailstorm of celestial boulders. In addition, we explore China's unique plan to transport zebrafish to the Tian Gang space station for research. A highlight is the discovery of NGC1277, a galaxy that seems to defy current cosmological models due to its apparent absence of dark matter. This finding could potentially shake up our understanding of cosmic evolution. Stay tuned for these and more stellar news updates, and as always, join in the conversation with us and our digital reporter Hallie, here on Astronomy Daily. You can also share your memories of the Apollo 11 moon mission on our Space Nuts podcast group. We look forward to your engagement with our astronomical adventures!

Welcome to Astronomy Daily for Friday, July 21st, 2023. I'm your host, Tim Gibbs, and joining me in the studio is Hallie, my AI assistant. Let's dive into today's headlines. Headline 1: India's Chandrayan 3 spacecraft is on track for its moon landing attempt on August 23rd or 24th. The spacecraft has been raising its orbit around Earth with a series of burns, and a Translunar injection burn is scheduled for July 31st. This mission is India's second attempt to land on the moon after the failed Chandrayan 2-lander in 2019. Headline 2: Comet Ponds-Brooks has brightened by five magnitudes and can now be seen in a six-inch telescope. Despite its distance of over 530 million kilometers from Earth, its recent outburst has made it visible with smaller telescopes for now. Headline 3: The master recording for NASA's Voyager Golden Record, created by astronomer Carl Sagan and Andrew Yann, is up for auction. These reels, estimated to be worth more than ten times their weight in gold, were used to produce the iconic golden records on the Voyager spacecraft. Headline 4: Astronomers have discovered a mysterious magnetar, GPMJ1839-10, located about 15,000 light years away in the direction of the constellation Scutum. It emits energy bursts every 22 minutes, making it the longest period magnetar ever found. And now, Hallie's terrible dad joke for the week: Why don't scientists trust atoms? Because they make up everything! That's all for today's episode of Astronomy Daily. Remember, you can catch Steve on Monday and me on Friday, with occasional one-story episodes on Wednesdays. For more episodes, visit spacenuts.io and bitesz.com.

Welcome to our Wednesday edition of the Astronomy Daily podcast, where we cover one exciting story each from host Tim Gibbs and AI assistant Hallie. **1. Hallie's Story: A Glitching Neutron Star** Halle discusses the discovery of a neutron star, SGR 1935+2154, that displayed a "glitch" after obliterating an asteroid. This "glitch" involved a change in the star's rotational speed while simultaneously releasing a powerful radio wave blast, a fast radio burst (FRB). This study has enabled astronomers to connect the mysterious radio energy bursts to magnetars, an extreme type of neutron star. These celestial objects are born from the remnant cores of massive stars after they undergo supernovas. With masses equivalent to the sun squeezed into city-sized volumes, magnetars possess the universe's most powerful magnetic fields. **2. SpaceX Launch Update** Our discussion then shifts to a SpaceX launch this week that was called off with just 5 seconds remaining on the countdown clock. The planned launch involved a Falcon 9 rocket topped with 54 Starlink satellites from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. While the specific issue causing the delay wasn't disclosed during the webcast, SpaceX assured that both the rocket and satellites were in good health, with plans to try for a launch again soon. **3. Wrapping Up** The podcast ends with Tim reminding you to catch his and Steve's full shows on Fridays and Mondays, respectively. You can download all episodes from SpaceNuts.io or Bitesz.com. **4. Upcoming** SpaceX is targeting Wednesday, July 19 for the next lift-off, meaning a potential 24-hour delay. This could mean a launch Wednesday night, California time, or early Thursday morning, July 20. Thank you for tuning in to Astronomy Daily! We'll see you next time.

Welcome to Astronomy Daily! In today's episode, we discuss the importance of planetary protection policies and the role of the Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) in formulating and updating them. These policies aim to prevent the harmful introduction of biological and organic contamination during space missions and ensure that scientific exploration does not adversely impact the new worlds we visit. We also highlight the complex process of displaying the space shuttle Endeavour vertically at the California Science Center. This six-month project involves stacking the shuttle's components, replicating its appearance on a launch pad. Endeavour, which flew 25 missions between 1992 and 2011, will be displayed in its vertical launch position at the Samuel Oscar Nair and Space Center. In another story, astronomers observe a surprising event involving a supermassive black hole named J2-219-51. This black hole's feeding frenzy on surrounding matter generates one of the brightest transient events ever recorded. While scientists are uncertain about the exact cause of this phenomenon, it could be the result of a star venturing too close to the black hole and being torn apart—a process known as spaghettification. Next, we bid farewell to Europe's Ariane 5 rocket, which has officially retired after a successful final launch. The Ariane 5 has served as the European Space Agency's workhorse launch vehicle since 1996, and its last mission deployed telecommunication satellites for the German and Italian governments. However, with the Ariane 5's retirement, Europe faces a gap in available launch vehicles until the completion of the Ariane 6, which has experienced development delays. Lastly, we share a special story about the University of Glasgow's celebration of its links to Albert Einstein. Researchers from the School of Physics and Astronomy planted an apple tree cutting on the campus, taken from Einstein's Summer Home. This tribute honors Einstein's visit to the university 90 years ago, where he received an honorary degree for his contributions to physics. Glasgow scientists have also played a significant role in gravitational wave research, contributing to the detection of these waves and confirming Einstein's theory. That's it for today's episode of Astronomy Daily. For more information, visit spacenuts.io and bitesz.com.

Welcome to Astronomy Daily for June 2nd, 2023 – S02E10.
In this episode of Astronomy Daily, Tim Gibbs discusses several intriguing stories.
Firstly, NASA is holding its first public meeting on UFOs, aiming for a more rigorous scientific approach to understanding mysterious sightings. A team of 16 scientists will report their findings by July, emphasizing the need for high-quality data and data curation.

Next, a new proposal suggests sending a spacecraft to explore all of Saturn's major moons, including Enceladus, Titan, Dion, and Mimus. This would be achieved through complex orbits and electric propulsion, providing energy efficiency and the ability to adjust orbits over time.

The episode also highlights a study investigating solar particle acceleration processes. Scientists are using energetic neutral atoms (ENAs), particles with no electric charge, to better understand solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that can disrupt power grids and create geomagnetic storms.

In an unusual development, researchers from Kyoto University and Sumitomo To Forestry in Japan are planning to launch a wooden satellite called LignoSat into space. Tests have shown that wood can withstand the extreme conditions of space and may offer environmental benefits compared to metal alloys.

Additionally, astronomers have discovered a massive black hole at the heart of a galaxy called Messier 84 (M84). The black hole's jets create an H-shaped structure in X-ray images, influencing gas movement and disrupting its feeding process.

Finally, the episode concludes with the successful return of the SpaceX Dragon capsule, completing the AX2 private astronaut mission.

Welcome to Astronomy Daily for the 29th of May 2023 – S02E09 In this episode, we talk about NASA's interesting influences on our daily life, some interesting inventions and developments that they've dumped on us over the years as well as something that China has been developing and has been flying over our heads for the last nine months. We also discuss an asteroid that may host life's building blocks which will get a visit from a United Arab Emirates spacecraft about a decade from now if all goes according to plan. The UAE announced in October 2021 that it plans to launch an ambitious mission to the asteroid belt in 2028. That mission will visit seven different space rocks and even land on one of them, an asteroid called 269 Justisha. Sheikh Muhammad bin Rashid Al-Makhtum bin Rashid Al-Makhtum, the vice president and prime minister of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai, said in a statement that we will never cease to look ahead. We will never cease our efforts to develop a brighter future for our young generations.² Astronomy Daily – The Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. Astronomy Daily the Podcast – S02E06 May 17, 2023 In today's episode of Astronomy Daily, Tim Gibbs and Hallie, his AI assistant, discuss several developments in space exploration. The first story covers the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft, which has been spotted heading towards Jupiter to study its atmosphere and its three moons, Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa, in order to assess their potential to host life. The second story reports on NASA's Juno spacecraft, which flew past Jupiter's volcanic moon IO on May 16 and will continue to explore the gas giant and its inner moons in its extended mission. The third story reveals that NASA's second high altitude balloon, carrying the Extreme Universe Space Observatory Two (EUSO-2) payload to detect cosmic ray particles, sprang a leak and had to be terminated over the Pacific Ocean. The fourth story covers the upcoming launch of SpaceX's Ax-2 private astronaut mission, which will send four people to the International Space Station for an eight-day stay. Finally, the world's largest plane, the Stratolaunch Rock carrier plane, has completed its first ever drop test of a prototype of the Talonic hypersonic vehicle test, paving the way for an even more ambitious test in the coming months. Plus Saturn’s rings are much younger than originally thought. Astronomy Daily – The Podcast is available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. Today’s Space, Astronomy, and Science News Podcast In this episode of Astronomy Daily, host Steve Dunkley and digital reporter Halley discuss various space-related news stories. The first news is about a study conducted by scientists from the University of Helsinki that measured cosmic radiation levels on board several aircraft on various flights. The results showed that exposure levels vary greatly depending on route, altitude and solar activity. The researchers recommended that airlines provide their crews with radiation monitoring tools and ensure that passengers are aware of the risks. In other news, environmental groups have filed a lawsuit against SpaceX and the Federal Aviation Administration over the company's launch activities at its Texas facility. The lawsuit alleges that the FAA violated federal law by granting SpaceX a launch license without conducting a thorough environmental review of the potential impacts of its activities on the surrounding wildlife and natural habitat. The case is ongoing in federal court. China has also announced its plan to send its astronauts, also known as "taikonauts," to explore the Moon, with the hopes of landing someone on it by the year 2030. China's lunar exploration program is part of their larger space ambitions, which include plans for a space station in Earth orbit and a mission to Mars in the 2030s. The episode also discusses the Jansky Very Large Array, a radio telescope array in New Mexico that is being used for a wide-ranging and continuous search for techno signatures, signals that would betray or give away the existence of an accomplished technological society. In this Astronomy Daily podcast episode, new host Tim Gibbs (AstroTim) is joined by Halley to discuss the latest news in space exploration. Private companies like Astrobotic, Intuitive Machines, Mast and Space Systems, Blue Origin, and SpaceX are planning multiple missions to the Moon, some to deliver scientific instruments and payloads, while others will transport humans in the future. SpaceX's Starship rocket prototype achieved launch successfully, but it exploded during its seperation attempt. Thales has successfully demonstrated its ability to protect a demonstration satellite from cyberattacks, highlighting the need for increased cybersecurity measures in space. Astria has launched a new satellite tasking capability in partnership with major satellite imagery providers, enabling customers to request and receive tasking of high-resolution satellite imagery within hours, offering more efficient and cost-effective access to high-resolution satellite imagery. Researchers at USC are collaborating with the software company Tangram Flex to replace the software components within legacy satellites to repurpose them, which could result in cost savings and less space debris. Voyager Two, launched in 1977, has begun using a small reservoir of backup power to keep its five science instruments operating, enabling the mission to postpone shutting down the science instruments until 2026. Today’s Space, Astronomy, and Science News Podcast Hi, thanks for joining me. This is Astronomy Daily. I'm your host, Andrew Dunkley. Coming up today, a comet interceptor mission. Nothing to do with DART or the plans of the Chinese that we talked about last week. This is another new mission. Also, the solar system has a magnetic tunnel, and we look at space junk because it's getting so junky up there, something's going to go wrong, according to one expert. That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily. Available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, YouTube and wherever you get podcasts from. Coming up on this episode, we're going to look at Enceladus because scientists think they've found the last piece of the puzzle that would give Enceladus everything it needs to have life. We've also in the past been talking about Mars and how it's starting to look a bit more active than they anticipated and now another piece of evidence to that effect has been uncovered. And Uranus, yes it's the butt of many butt jokes and now it's just become worse. We'll explain why on this episode of Astronomy Daily. With your host, Andrew Dunkley. Hello again and thanks for joining us on Astronomy Daily. Coming up on this edition, we're going to be looking at a few landmark pieces of science, particularly about a breakthrough in the provision of power going forward.
We're talking about fusion, which is quite an extraordinary discovery if it holds true.
And we're also going to look at another breakthrough in science, that of making light travel in
two directions in time. There's an experiment that's been done on that.
And we're going to take another look at impact craters on the Moon because they've come up with a new theory about how some of them were formed.
That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily. With your host, Andrew Dunkley.

Hello once again, thanks for joining me on Astronomy Daily. Hope you're well. Coming up in this episode, we're going to tell you who owns the Moon.
Or does anybody own it at all? That is the question.
And we're going to look into something that hit Earth recently. That has been the subject of significant study.
And astronomers at the Atacama Desert have taken a look at the light of the Universe and reassess the age of the universe as a whole. So how old is it?
We will tell you on this episode of Astronomy Daily.

And coming up on today's program, Mars may still be an active world.
New images of Titan reveal rare clouds.
Sharing the James Webb Space Telescope data might be a bad thing.
And we may not have heard from extraterrestrials for one interesting reason. A new theory yet again.

Thanks for joining me again on Astronomy Daily. Andrew Dunkley here, your host. Hope you had a great weekend.
Coming up on today's program to kick off the week, more on the Hipparcos star chart.
We've talked about this before and it's fascinating. We've got more information on that.
A SpaceX moon mission is a distinct possibility; where stars go to die and something really amazing at Epcot which was unfortunately not there when I last went but I might have to go back again. That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily.

Coming up on today's show, it's looking like the history of Mars has got some uncanny similarities to Earth. And I'm not just talking about the fact that it used to be a wet, warm planet that could have harbored life. No, other things have happened that might surprise you. We'll be looking into that.
We'll also be looking at a big flash of light that has been studied by astronomers. We're talking something thousands of times brighter than our sun, and they think they know what caused it.
And you might be able to help keep old rockets up to scratch with the help of the US Space and Rocket Center Education Foundation. They're looking for people to help them out.
Tell you all about it on today's edition of Astronomy Daily.

Today on the show, we'll be looking at dark matter.
Well, actually, we won't be looking at it because we'll be talking about galaxies that don't have any, which seems strange.
We'll also be looking at investigations into very weak gravitational waves.
A super Jupiter has been discovered and we find out about a man and his rock. That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily.

WASP 39B Re-examined by JWST - The Results

This is Astronomy Daily. I'm your host Andrew Dunkley. I hope you're well and hope you can sit through the latest episode where we'll be talking about an analysis of the planet WASP 39b by the James Webb Space Telescope because it's shown up some quite extraordinary chemicals in the analysis and Fred Watson will be joining us to talk about that.
It looks like Earth is older than we first thought, that explains my sore knees.
Using sails for de-orbit and watching over elections from space could be a thing.
That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily.

Hello once again thanks for joining me this is Astronomy Daily where we talk astronomy and space science that's in the news.
Coming up on today's edition we're going to look at the edge of our solar system. It's been the subject of a recent study and it looks like something weird is happening out there.
We're also looking into an investigation that's being bankrolled to the tune of several million dollars to try and find what some believe is a UFO that's splashed down in the Pacific.
What of the future of telescopes, those that are on Earth rather than in space? Is there going to be anything we can do with them going forward?
Well, the answer is yes, and the way they're going to do it might surprise you. and an Australian rocket that's being built, almost completed and ready for launch.

That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily.

This is Astronomy Daily, I am your host, Andrew Dunkley, and coming up on this edition, Mars may have been where life came from. That is an interesting concept. We also look at where our water may have come from, the sun's influence on water, as in the weather in the Pacific, and an asteroid hit on Canada. That's all coming up on this edition of Astronomy Daily.
