Weirdly Helpful (formerly The Best Advice Show)

en us
Weirdly Helpful (formerly The Best Advice Show) is a short, weekly infusion of delightful, unexpected and strange ways to make life slightly and sometimes profoundly better. In each episode a different contributor offers an odd experiment, a silly ritual, a curious practice that you’ll find weirdly helpful. Stuff like howling when you're despondent, eating oranges in the shower and metaphorically flushing your adversary down the toilet!

The last ten years have been a rollercoaster of deep despair and amazing opportunities that somehow present themselves at the last possible second,” says Eef Barzelay. “During that time, the band bottomed out, I lost my house, and I had to declare bankruptcy. The only way to survive was to try to transcend myself, to find some kind of deeper, spiritual relationship with life. Once I committed to that, all these little miracles started happening.”

This episode was originally made in collaboration with Slate's excellent podcast, How To!

Like many pet parents, Zak Rosen and his wife lived for years in a state of denial about their beloved dog, Rumi. Then they learned that Rottweilers only tend to live about eight to 12 years, and there was no denying it: Rumi is already in her twilight years. In the not-so-distant future, they’ll have to make some truly tough decisions.

On this episode of How To!, Zak seeks out advice about end-of-life pet care from Dr. Ellen LaFramboise, owner of Crossroads Veterinary Hospice, and fellow pet parent Gabby Santos, who shares how she prepared for the death of her 18-year-old miniature pinscher, Bob’i. Their conversation might change the way you think about your furry pal’s final days (and maybe even your own).

If you liked this episode, check out “How To Get Your Dog To Stop Barking (Without Barking Back).”

Podcast production by Zak Rosen, Rosemary Belson, Derek John, Joel Meyer, and Merritt Jacob.

Introducing: Tiny Huge Decisions

35 min
View

Hi Advice Listener, Zak here. I've got a podcast rec. for you today.

We all want our friends to be happy… but how far would you go to help? Tiny Huge Decisions follows two best friends, Mohsin and Dalia, as they make a relationship altering choice – will she be the gestational surrogate for Mohsin and his husband? Mohsin grew up in a devout Muslim family where being gay was inconceivable. He couldn’t imagine living the life he dreamed of - to create his own family. He’s now met the love of his life, Matthew, and they want a child. When Mohsin’s best friend, Dalia, said she’d consider being a gestational surrogate for them, he couldn’t believe it - she already has a child of her own and had serious complications with her pregnancy… Eavesdrop in on their conversations, their processing, and their choices, as they grapple with the real question - is this the worst idea in the world, or the greatest gift a friend can give?

Tiny Huge Decisions is a co-production of APM Studios and Chalk + Blade.
