Chris Chavez, Aisha Praught-Leer, Eric Jenkins and Anderson Emerole unpack all the action from Day 2 of Grand Slam Track: Kingston.

Kenny Bednarek — Mr. 2x Olympic Medal, now Mr. Slam Champion — swept the short sprints and made it look easy. 100m? Win. 200m? Win. $100k? Yes please. Not bad for a weekend in Jamaica.

Gabby Thomas? She didn’t just win. She leveled up. A massive 400m PR (49.14!) — behind only a world-leading time from Salwa Eid Naser — locked down the Women’s Long Sprints crown. Two races. One trophy. Another six-figure payday.

But it wasn’t just the Americans cleaning up. Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain edged out the 400m crew to win the Men’s Long Sprints Slam. Diribe Welteji outkicked Nikki Hiltz to take the Women’s Short Distance title in a spicy 1500m.

And oh yeah — there was that absolutely loaded men’s 1500 field where 800m Olympic champ Emmanuel Wanyonyi stepped up in distance and beat the entire Paris medal stand.

Tonight was the night that we believe fans started to rock with the brand-new league format. Fast, fresh, and fun. It’s a modern take on track with real stakes — and real checks — on the line. And it’s only Day 2.Let’s talk about the money. The medals. The matchups. And why this might be the shake-up the sport’s been waiting for.

GRAND SLAM TRACK: KINGSTON PREVIEW | LIVE FROM JAMAICA

    94 min Transcript
    View

We’re talking paydays. Primetime. Professional track.

Welcome to Grand Slam Track, launching this weekend in Kingston, Jamaica—the first stop in a brand-new, big-budget, athlete-first pro league created by Michael Johnson.

You want Olympic stars? Try Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas, Grant Fisher, Cole Hocker, Fred Kerley, Mary Moraa—the best of the best, signed and showing up.

You want stakes? How does $100,000 per event winner sound? Yeah.

And you want drama? It's all baked in: Racers vs. Challengers. One weekend. Two events per athlete. Only one Slam Champion.

This all kicks off in Kingston, which is basically sprinting’s holy land. If anyone’s gonna test Fred Kerley or Kenny Bednarek on their 100m trash talk, it’s the Jamaican crowd… and Oblique Seville.

We’ve got Gabby vs. Marileidy. Yared vs. Kerr vs. Hocker. Elise Cranny sweating it out after a 30:36 in SoCal, now lining up in 88-degree heat for the 5000m. Sydney McLaughlin opening her season in April. And a 1500m/800m field on the men’s side that looks more stacked than your TikTok algorithm.

So let’s get into it: the matchups, the payouts, and the storylines that’ll define Grand Slam Track.

It’s officially that time again: The spreadsheets are out and the ranking formulas are loaded. Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia have returned with the kind of number crunching that would make a tax accountant blush.

Yes — we’re talking about The Ten, and more broadly, the increasingly anxiety-inducing state of the 10,000 meters heading into the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

Because apparently World Athletics took one look at the event and said, ‘What if we made this harder, more confusing, and fully dependent on vibes, shoe tech, and whether your country’s federation knows how to read the rankings page?’

So here we are. The women’s standard dropped to a vicious 30:20.00. The men’s remains at a world-class 27:00.00. And unless you’re from Kenya or Ethiopia—or somehow running 10Ks on the road in super shoes fast enough to melt tarmac—you’re probably counting on the whims of the World Rankings gods to punch your ticket to Tokyo.

In the U.S., Weini Kelati is still the queen of consistency. Parker Valby and Karissa Schweizer skipped The Ten entirely. Elise Cranny has re-entered the picture and Jessica McClain quietly garnered some valuable points by PR’ing by half a minute.

On the men’s side, it’s a little simpler: Grant Fisher, Nico Young, Graham Blanks, and Woody Kincaid are qualified. All they have to do is battle at USAs.

There’s still time. A 10K at Mt. SAC is coming. Maybe Pre will host a last-minute 10K.  So let’s break down who’s up, who’s down, who’s close and who’s hoping UK Athletics doesn’t screw them over again.

The Build: Bandit Running Co-Founder & CEO Nick West

    62 min Transcript
    View

In the fall of 2020, while much of the world was still stuck inside wondering when things might go back to normal, Tim West was lacing up his racing shoes, logging miles, and building something new – not a tech startup, not an app, but a running brand, out of his basement. He quickly recruited his brother Nick on his vision. They didn't spend money on big splashy ads or influencer campaigns. Instead, they listened, they ran, and they asked questions. They built gear starting with socks that runners actually wanted. Over the next few years, what started as a side project for the two brothers and their designer turned co-founder Ardith  Singh, grew into one of the most exciting new names in running: Bandit Running – a Brooklyn-based company that makes premium performance apparel and centers community at the heart of everything it does.

But Nick West didn't come from the fashion world. Him and his brother Tim were working in e-commerce at Jet.com. They grew up immersed in the New Jersey skate and surf scene where the coolest brands weren't built in boardrooms. They were built by friends on the street and from the ground up. That ethos is what stuck with them.

Today, Bandit makes everything from race day singlets to streetwear inspired track pants. They host events that pack the sidewalks of New York. They've launched the unsponsored project celebrating professional runners who don't get the financial support from the major shoe brands and they're building a brand-first model that doesn't just sell apparel; it tells stories. So how did a couple of brothers go from zero marketing budget to a brand that's evolving what running looks and feels like?

That's what we find out in this episode. It's 10 a.m. in Brooklyn and Nick West is refreshing his phone again and again. We're sitting in the Bandit Running headquarters. The coffee's still hot, and the 2025 spring collection, nearly a year in the making, is officially live to the public. This drop: It's the result of 11 months of long days, late nights, and that's just how those days go.

On a previous drop, there was even a 2:30 a.m. production shoot involving a whiteboard, an iPhone, and Nick himself modeling shorts that he didn't expect to be in. These are the kind of stories that don't make the product page on the website, but at Bandit, they're kind of the point because this isn't just an apparel company.

In this episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast, Nick West joins me on how he and his team built Bandit Running, a company rooted in connection, performance, and that little bit of rebellion that every runner knows by heart. It's a brand built by runners, forerunners, driven by storytelling, community, and the belief that there's a better way to build a business in this space.

“I also learned that I just love working with athletes who truly have that passion about seeing how good they can be. The outcome isn't as important to me as I thought. It's just, ‘Let's go see how good we can be and see where that lands us...’ Stepping away from college and taking this really windy journey to where I am now, I've been able to work with all different levels of athletes and it's been equally rewarding to those who run their first mile without stopping all the way to the world stage. It's been a non-conventional path, but I've been loving it.”

My guest for today’s episode is someone who’s seen—and shaped—American middle-distance running from just about every angle. Juli Benson was a 1996 Olympian in the 1500 meters, a world-class competitor in her own right, and now she’s one of the most respected coaches in the sport.

Over the past two decades, Juli’s coaching journey has taken her from college programs like Georgetown, Air Force, and Penn to working with World Champions, Olympians, and emerging pros. She coached Jenny Simpson to her gold medal at the 2011 World Championships. She guided Kevin Sullivan back to the global stage. And today, she’s the coach behind Nikki Hiltz, helping them chase a 2028 Olympic dream of their own.

In this episode, we get into it all:

     – What makes Nikki tick and how their partnership is evolving

     – The differences between coaching NCAA athletes vs. pros

     – How Juli learned to balance intensity with recovery—the hard way

     – Her reflections on being a woman in the coaching world before there were many to look up to

     – And what it’s like now to see coaches like Shalane Flanagan, Diljeet Taylor, and Laurie Henes rise to national prominence

We also talk about Juli’s time at Air Force, the unique challenges of coaching across every level of the sport, and what it’s meant to mentor everyone from Olympic finalists to first-time runners.

This is a conversation about resilience, evolution, and quiet excellence—and it’s one of my favorite coaching deep-dives we’ve done yet.

World Indoor Championships are officially behind us so we have lots to unpack. Overall, the meet lacked in star power but was still able to produce some memorable moments. Three days. 516 athletes, one championship record, three world leads, 32 national records.

We had drama. We had dominance. We had Jakob Ingebrigtsen running off with two gold medals and made it look like a tempo run. We had Gudaf Tsegay breaking a championship record and redefined what a full send means. We had Grant Holloway and Mondo Duplantis pulling off three-peats to cement their greatness.

And then there’s Josh Hoey — who went from “Is he actually good?” to world indoor 800m champion all within the past 12 months. A personal highlight was Claire Bryant shocked the field in the long jump. Surprise global medals all around — the kind that make the sport so damn fun.

The Build: Ali On The Run Show’s Ali Feller

    124 min Transcript
    View

Let's go back a couple of years. It's 2017 and Ali Feller is a writer, runner, self-described talker, and she's sitting in her living room in her house with a microphone, an idea, and a whole lot of enthusiasm. She doesn't have a fancy studio, a producer, and any guarantees that anyone is going to listen. What she does have is a belief that runners, pros, weekend warriors, and people chasing something big have stories that deserve to be told. So she starts talking, listening, and asking really good questions.

Today, the Ali On The Run Show is the biggest running podcast in America. It's downloaded millions of times a year. It's where elite marathoners, Olympians, and everyday runners come to share their journeys – whether they're chasing gold medals, breaking barriers, or just figuring out how to balance running with the rest of their lives. At the center of it all, this endlessly curious, deeply passionate, and incredibly warm person has built not just a podcast, but a community.

But Ali’s story isn't just about the show and the podcast; it's about resilience. It's about saying yes, even when it's scary. It's about navigating Crohn's disease, pregnancy, motherhood, and most recently, a breast cancer diagnosis, all while showing up, microphone in hand, ready to tell the next great story. Through it all, she's been a race announcer, a marathoner, a friend to just about everyone in the running world, and somehow the nicest person in America.

So how did she do it? How did Ali go from a kid who loved dancing to magazine editor to podcaster with sell-out live shows, an engaged audience, and a voice that runners turn to every single week? That's what we're going to find out today. I'm joined by my wife Kari Lynn to chat with Ali Feller on how she built the Ali On The Run Show into the biggest running podcast out there.

“The really great athletes – they all have a superpower. [It’s about] what makes them uniquely excellent and helping them understand what their superpower is and how they wave that sword around…You may not have laser vision, but you can fly. How do you use your ability to fly and max that out?”

In just two years, Will Palmer has overseen quite a bit of success for the Florida Gators distance program. In 2023, as the associate head coach for cross country and assistant track and field coach, Palmer led the Gators’ women to their highest national ranking since 2009, an SEC championship, and a second place finish at the NCAA East Regionals. In addition to all of that, he and his wife Samantha were the coaches behind Parker Valby's record-breaking dominance, guiding her to NCAA titles, collegiate records, and her first Olympic team.

Before arriving in Gainesville, Palmer made an impact at Alabama, helping the women's team to an SEC title and a podium finish at the NCAA Championships in 2022. His coaching career also includes stops at Georgetown, Western Kentucky, Iowa State, and Oklahoma, shaping some of the best distance programs in the country. So today we dive into the vision behind Florida's rise in cross country, what made Parker Valby's training and mindset so unique to be part of, his coaching philosophy, and what he's building in Gainesville – plus lessons from a career spent developing talent and much more.

If you've been enjoying these office hours episodes, shoot me a message with other coaches that you'd like to hear from. We've got interviews with Mike Smith, Diljeet Taylor, Ed Eyestone, Laurie Henes, Dave Smith, Alex Gibby, Mark Coogan, and other top coaches in our archives.

“My mentality is if I'm going through that high mileage and adding that stress in, I don't want to also have to worry about workouts and putting my body in a hole where I can't recover for a week or two down the road. I think that's very different than how a lot of other people approach training, but for me it's been working.”

For the first time in over 30 years, an American man has won the Los Angeles Marathon.

On Sunday, Matt Richtman stamped his name in the history books, breaking the tape in 2:07:56—a massive personal best and a statement win in only his second marathon. The 25-year-old ASICS athlete didn’t just claim victory; he dominated, pulling away from a world-class field with a decisive move that turned the streets of LA into his own personal proving ground.

The performance did have so many people scratching their heads thinking: “Who?” I am here to answer all of those questions.

Today, we sit down with Matt to break it all down:

    – The moment he knew he could win—and the fearless move that sealed it

    – Why he had no set plan going in but let instinct take over

    – What’s next after a 2:07 breakthrough in just his second marathon

    – Why his training on Strava doesn’t make sense but maybe after he explains it - it makes a bit more sense

    – Why he’s got a traditional and old-school approach to training

    – And how it feels to be part of the next generation pushing U.S. marathoning forward

This episode is for anyone who loves the thrill of a bold race and the promise of what’s to come.

"I think that it has gotten to a point where we've taken the racing out of racing. We've taken the sport and turned it into something else. Track is about racing. You have eight athletes on the track for a reason. You award a champion or award a winner of the race for a reason: because they outperformed everyone else. And that's not easy. That's one of my fears: that people will start to think that it's easy, because the winner is not really being highlighted for having won. They're being highlighted for having run a personal best.

Ultimately, if you're not careful, you end up with this deconstructed competition where it's not about the athletes in the race… We're very excited about what we're bringing...I can't wait. That's what you want. One of the things that's funny to me is when I see people in the track world on social media talking about fantasy matchups. It’s like: We have the real fantasy over here. It's real. It's not fantasy. It's actually happening."

The countdown is on. We are just one month away from the launch of Grand Slam Track, a bold new league that promises to shake up the sport of track and field—and today, we’re talking to the man behind it all, Michael Johnson.

We’ve done multiple episodes with MJ as a four-time Olympic champion, world record holder and one of the most respected voices in the sport. If you haven’t listened to those, I suggest you go back and do so. Our 2022 CITIUS MAG Live at Worlds interview with him is one of the best big picture conversations we’ve done on the state of the sport.

Johnson has spent years analyzing what’s missing in professional track. His solution? A structured, high-stakes, athlete-driven competition that puts rivalries, personalities, and pure racing at the forefront.

With 48 signed Racers, a multi-platform media deal, and a $30 million investment, Grand Slam Track is designed to change how the sport operates, creating a true professional league that’s built to last.

    Today, we dive into:

    • How the league is strategically structuring itself to maximize the talent track

    • What success really looks like in Year 1 from a business standpoint

    • Inside the TV deal and how it came together

    • The lessons from other sports (even WWE) that can help track engage more fans

    • And more on what to expect when the first meet kicks off in Kingston

Michael Johnson isn’t here to wait for change—he’s making it happen. Let’s get into it.

The Build: KETONE-IQ’s Founder Michael Brandt

    67 min Transcript
    View

Picture this: you are a marathon runner – but not just any marathon runner. You've got a personal best under 2:45. You're a Stanford grad with a background in computer science and design. Instead of heading off to business school, you decide to start a company – one that's rethinking human metabolism from the ground up.

That is the story of Michael Brandt. He's the CEO and co-founder of Ketone-IQ, a company pioneering the future of metabolic health. Their flagship product, Ketone-IQ isn't just a supplement – it's an entirely new category of fuel. In just a few short years, it's taken off. It gained traction with elite athletes, high powered execs, and even the U.S. Department of Defense, which awarded the company – then known as HVMN – a $6 million contract to study how ketones can optimize soldier performance.

But Michael's story isn't just about biochemistry and business strategy; it's about thinking differently about seeing opportunity where others see obstacles. It's about choosing to put yourself out there even when it feels uncomfortable and about the unexpected connection between running a business and running a marathon, from testing the limits of human performance to building a multi-million dollar company. In a brand new category, Michael Brandt is a founder who's always running fast and thinking ahead with Ketone-IQ.

“You can't be someone who shies away from sticking your neck out. I tell our guys: ‘We are trying to win.’ I'll say it publicly. I will say it to anybody. Maybe that puts pressure on us. But life is pressure. Athletics is practice for life. You need to figure out how to handle pressure, how to handle stress, how to handle others’ expectations, your own expectations, and manage it”.

We continue with our office hours episodes as I sit down with Coach Dave Smith, one of the most accomplished coaches in NCAA cross country history and the architect behind Oklahoma State's dominance. Since taking the helm in Stillwater, Coach Smith has built a powerhouse program leading Oklahoma State to four NCAA men's cross country titles and a Big 12 record of 13 conference championships. He guided the Cowboys to a historic team performance at the 2023 NCAA Cross Country Championship, scoring just 49 points, the third lowest winning total since 2000.

Coach Smith’s accolades don't stop there. He's a four-time National Coach of the Year, a Team USA coach on the world stage, and a leader of a program that has consistently produced NCAA champions, All-Americans, and world-class athletes like German Fernandez, Taylor Roe, Alex Maier, and Sinclaire Johnson.

In today's episode, we dive into his journey from athlete to coach, how he's cultivated a championship driven environment at Oklahoma State, what's next for his program, his athletes, and his take on the future of distance running in the NCAA and beyond.

“I remember during the race just never looking back. I was like, ‘It doesn't matter. What I need to be focused on is what's in front of me. I remember in the last 50 meters I turned back to check and make sure like, ‘Wait, is this right?’... To come away with the win – that was just never on my radar.”

Today on the podcast, we’re joined by Taylor Roe, the newly crowned USATF Half Marathon Champion and one of the most exciting young talents in American distance running. Just a week ago, Taylor took on frigid temps, biting winds, and a stacked field in Atlanta—and walked away with her first national title, a massive personal best of 1:07:22, and a spot on Team USA for the World Road Running Championships in September.

Her victory was anything but easy. She chased down national record holder Weini Kelati, battled back and forth with Emma Grace Hurley, and ultimately showed the strength and confidence that has defined her rise from NCAA champion at Oklahoma State to a force on the roads with Puma Elite.

In today’s episode, Taylor takes us inside her winning race strategy, the training that’s propelled her to a new level, and how training alongside Fiona O’Keeffe and the Puma Elite squad has changed her approach. Plus, we talk about her transition from the track to the roads, what’s next for her in 2025, and whether she’s ready for another half marathon.

“It was just trusting my fitness. It was only my second half marathon coming in… It was a new experience, but it felt familiar to me given all the training that we've done. I felt like I was very prepared to handle what was thrown at me and the unique challenges you get in the half marathon. So coming into Atlanta, I had a lot of confidence.”

My guest for today’s episode is Alex Maier – a rising star in American distance running who just made a statement at the USATF Half Marathon Championships. In near-freezing conditions and a brutally fast race, Alex surged ahead late to claim his first national title, running 1:00:48 and securing a spot on Team USA for the World Road Running Championships, which we just learned today will not be held in San Diego in September. No reason was given by World Athletics but a new host city is expected to be announced soon.

Alex is a former All-American at Oklahoma State and is no stranger to tough courses and big races. But his transition to the roads with Puma Elite has taken him to another level. In this episode, Alex takes us inside his breakthrough win and how his training at OSU, and now with Puma Elite, has set him up for success. We also talk about his future goals, his experience moving up in distance, and what’s next as he prepares for Worlds.

The 2025 U.S. Half Marathon Championships in Atlanta delivered fireworks, with PUMA Elite’s Alex Maier and Taylor Roe claiming national titles and locking in their spots for the World Road Running Championships. Roe’s late-race surge past Weini Kelati underscored Oklahoma State’s pipeline of elite talent.

Meanwhile, indoor track is officially in chaos mode. Heather MacLean ran 4:17.01 for the mile, which also unknowingly broke the U.S. indoor 1500m record. Nico Young continued his meteoric rise, clocking 12:51.56 for 5000m—second-fastest by an American ever. Yared Nuguse chased the mile world record but settled for 3:47.22. Also at BU – Graham Blanks broke 7:30 in the 3K and Aidan McCarthy ran a historic 1:45.19 in the 800m.

With NCAA Indoors, World Indoors, and outdoor season approaching fast, the distance scene is more competitive than ever. Tune in as we break it all done.

Bonus: Harry Styles ran 3:24 for the Tokyo Marathon.

Seventy years after Roger Bannister became the first man to run a sub-four-minute mile, researchers say a woman could soon do the same. A new study suggests that Faith Kipyegon—the fastest female miler in history—could break the four-minute barrier under ideal conditions, using strategic pacing and aerodynamic drafting.

Today, we look at the science, the strategy and the debate over one of the great frontiers in track and field. My guest is Olympian and now Dr. Shalaya Kipp.

“I want them to be able to come across the river as you cross into Harvard Athletics and be able to let their hair down and relax. I want it to be the best part of the day with their teammates that they really enjoy. What I usually say is, ‘We're going to take what we're doing seriously, but we're not going to take ourselves seriously.’”

My guest for today's episode is Alex Gibby, one of the most accomplished and respected coaches in collegiate distance running right now. He's in his 8th season as the Associate Head Coach of Harvard Track and Field and Cross Country. He's built a program that competes at the highest level on both the track and in cross country. In the past year alone, his athletes won four NCAA titles, made history in cross country, and set a bunch of Ivy League records. He also put two athletes on their respective Olympic teams.

Gibby's influence extends far beyond Harvard. Throughout his coaching career, he's guided teams to the NCAA Cross Country Championships consistently, developed multiple All-Americans, and led programs at Michigan, William and Mary, Charlotte, and Stephen F. Austin. From mentoring champions like Graham Blanks and Maia Ramsden to shaping the next generation of elite runners, he's at the center of some of the biggest success stories in the NCAA right now.

In this episode we talk about his coaching philosophy, how he's built this team culture in a high pressure academic environment like Harvard, what it takes to develop national champions, and his insights on the future of collegiate and professional distance running.

“Some of what this journey has been about is just the relentless pursuit of excellence through this gift. I really have made that my mission this year and I hope I can do that for people.”

My guest for today's episode is Josh Hoey – one of the most compelling comeback stories in American distance running right now. At just 18 years old, Josh made headlines by turning pro straight out of high school, signing with Adidas after setting the national high school indoor 800m record. But instead of a smooth trajectory to stardom, the years that followed were filled with coaching changes, setbacks, and hard lessons about what it truly takes to succeed at the highest level.

Now at 25 years old, Josh is having the season of his life. In just the past month, he broke the American indoor 800m record twice, first at the Millrose Games and then again at the U.S. Indoor Championships this past weekend, where he ran 1:43.24. It's a world leading time and the second-fastest indoor 800m time in history. The win also secured him his first Team USA berth for the upcoming World Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.

In this episode, Josh opens up about his rollercoaster journey from the struggles of turning pro at such a young age to finding stability with his coach Justin Rinaldi and a training system that finally clicked for him. We talk about the mental shifts, training breakthroughs, and the faith that has carried him through it all. And finally, what his hopes and expectations are as he gets ready for World Indoors.

On today’s show, we have a lot to talk about. Josh Hoey just ran 1:43.24 for 800 meters—indoors. That’s the second-fastest time ever run indoors, behind only Wilson Kipketer. We’ll break down what this means for the American 800m scene, how he’s addressed skepticism that inevitably comes with a performance like this and whether Hoey is suddenly a legitimate outdoor medal contender.

Hobbs Kessler doubled at USAs, taking both the 3000m and 1500m titles like it was just another weekend at the track. We’ll talk about what impressed us the most about Kessler's double, how the men’s middle distances are shaping up for 2025 and why it was OK for Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker to skip out.

And then there’s the "rivalry" that was quickly dispelled by the athletes – Nikki Hiltz vs. Shelby Houlihan. Just a few years ago, Houlihan was untouchable. Then came the four-year ban, and now, she’s back—and already battling for the top spot. In the 3000m, Houlihan got to the front, squeezed the pace, and dared anyone to come with her. And Nikki Hiltz? They came with her. And then passed her. In the final strides of the women’s 3000m, Hiltz outkicked Houlihan, officially stamping themselves as America’s best championship racer in the middle distances.

Plus, we’ll get into the results of the sprints and why the 2025 World Indoor Championships in Nanjing might be one of the weirdest global meets we’ve ever seen—between withdrawals, travel logistics, and a US team that’s missing some of its biggest stars.

“But also in the back of my mind, and with talking to Craig [Nowak], was that I would have so much regret if I stopped now. I feel like I have not reached my potential and that’s the biggest thing that I want to do: be able to see how fast I can go and how far I can go.”

My guest for today's episode is Sinclaire Johnson. She's the 2023 U.S. 1500m champion, a two-time world championship finalist, and the sixth-fastest American woman in history at 1500m. Sinclaire has proven time and time again that she belongs among the best–not just in the United States, but also in the world.

But the road hasn't always been easy. 2024 was a year of highs and lows for her: a two-second personal best and a stunning 3:56 at the Olympic Trials final, but also a 4th place finish that left her just outside of the team for Paris. Adding in her two injuries that disrupted both her Trials buildup and her postseason, it's been a year of recalibrating. It's also been a year of reassessing and figuring out what comes next.

In this episode, we get into the emotional rollercoaster of the Trials, her decision to leave the Union Athletics Club, why she's taking full control of her training under the guidance of her fiancé, Craig Nowak. We also talk about what she's learned from years of navigating injuries, her new approach to staying healthy, and how she's setting herself up for success in 2025, starting with this weekend's U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships.

On today’s show: Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo just rewrote the history books, obliterating the world half marathon record by an eye-popping 48 seconds in Barcelona. Meanwhile, Grant Fisher decided one world record wasn’t enough, so he went ahead and took down two in a week—because why not? Also: Jakob Ingebrigtsen is breaking world records, dropping Instagram captions, and casually reminding everyone that he’s still that guy.

Jakob Ingebrigtsen Strikes Back: Reclaims Indoor Mile World Record in Lievin — Just five days after Yared Nuguse set the world indoor mile record, Jakob Ingebrigtsen obliterated it with a 3:45.14 performance in Lievin, France, reclaiming his throne as the fastest miler in history. Along the way, he also shattered his own 1500m world record, becoming the first man to break 3:30 indoors (3:29.63).

Grant Fisher’s Historic Week: Two World Records in Seven Days — Grant Fisher has rewritten the history books, breaking two world records in just one week—the 3,000m at Millrose (7:22.91) and the 5,000m in Boston (12:44.09). This is the most dominant stretch of American distance running ever witnessed indoors.

Jacob Kiplimo Shatters Half Marathon World Record in Barcelona — Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo made history at the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks, running a staggering 56:42 to obliterate the previous world half marathon record by 48 seconds—the largest single improvement in history. Kiplimo became the first athlete to break 57 minutes, reinforcing his dominance on the roads ahead of his marathon debut in London.

This one goes out to all our loyal listeners who have been with me since the start of CITIUS MAG and know that I've been after this goal for a very long time.

On Feb. 15th, I lined up for the mile at Trials of Miles' The Circuit at The Armory in New York City. After three solid months of training under coach Mark Coogan, we decided it would be a good test to see where my fitness was at. 4:57.88 was a little bit of a surprise but so fulfilling.

Decided to jump on the mic with my wife to recap the night at the track.

“People asked me if I was shocked crossing the line. To be honest, I didn't feel like the shock set in yet when I crossed the line because I thought I could run 3:48 or 3:49. I was really excited, but I don't feel like I was as shocked as other people. It was afterwards when someone told me I was number eight on the world all-time list. That's when I was like, ‘Wow.’”

My guest for today's episode isGary Martin, a fan favorite here at CITIUS MAG since his high school days. Now he's a junior at the University of Virginia. Gary just delivered one of the fastest miles in NCAA history at the prestigious Millrose Games, running an incredible 3:48.82 – a performance that shattered his own school record and puts him at No. 2 on the all-time collegiate list and No. 8 on the world all-time indoor list.

What makes this even more impressive is that he was the only collegiate runner in such a stacked field of pros and ran a very well-executed race surging through the field from being last at halfway to finishing 5th overall. Today we're diving into what this performance means for his season, his mindset going into that historic race, and how he's approaching the upcoming championship stretch.

Plus, we talk about the evolution of his career at UVA and the rapid rise of collegiate milers pushing the 1500m and the mile to new limits.

“Once I made the Olympic team, it was kind of like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. I finally accomplished that goal. This is weird to say, but I feel like there was a lot less pressure on me for the Olympics than any NCAA race. At NCAA races, I was expected to win. But at the Olympics, they're like, ‘She's here!’”

My guest for today's episode isParker Valby. This is her third time on the show. Over the past year, she rewrote the NCAA record books, becoming the first woman in history to win 5 individual NCAA titles in a single academic year. It earned her the prestigious Bowerman Award. Her undefeated season included a record-breaking performance at every championship level from cross country to indoor to outdoor.

She shattered the collegiate 10,000m record by 28 seconds, ran a historic 14:52 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and capped it all off with a runner-up finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials to qualify for her first Olympic team. Then she took 11th at the Paris Olympics.

Now she's taking her talents to the professional stage with Team New Balance Boston under the guidance of Mark Coogan. She's navigating a new training environment with tougher competition and adjusting from being dominant in the NCAA to now trying to contend on the global stage. In this conversation, we talk about her transition to the pro ranks, her unique training approach that still prioritizes cross-training, and what she hopes to achieve in her first season as a pro.

We also get into her Olympic experience and recap her professional debut at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix where she ran 8:34 for a personal best and third place finish against a very strong women's 3000m field.

    • Fisher set an American record last year in the 2-mile at Millrose—can he take down Yared Nuguse’s 7:28.23 American record in the 3000m?

    • Kerr is undefeated at Millrose over longer distances, but 0-3 in the Wanamaker Mile—will that change?

    • Olympic bronze medalist Georgia Bell (3:52 PB) is a different kind of challenge.

🏃‍♂️ Can Brandon Miller break the 600m world best?

    • Miller is targeting Donavan Brazier’s WR (1:13.77) after a strong 800m opener.
    • Quincy Wilson (16-year-old Olympic gold medalist) could also take down the high school record.

“Seeing them not just at their highs but also at their lows and how they fought to climb back up has taught me a lot about resilience and being relentless. I've become a better coach because I have the opportunity to work with these pro women and I'm excited to continue to get better, learn from them, and make sure that they're at the center of everything that I do.

My guest for today's episode is Diljeet Taylor. We had her on the show last fall after she won the NCAA Cross Country Championships with her BYU women. For those of you who aren't familiar, she's one of the most transformative coaches in the sport. She's built BYU's women's cross country program and distance program into a national powerhouse, coaching NCAA champions, Olympians, and creating one of the strongest cultures in collegiate running.

Now she's stepping into an even bigger role, leading a professional training group with Nike while continuing to coach at BYU. Nike has announced Swoosh TC for Oregon, Utah, and Arizona. It's being described by the brand as a network of elite athletes, coaches, and innovators working together to push the boundaries of performance and progress.

Coach Taylor will oversee the Utah division, Jerry Schumacher will head Oregon along with Shalane Flanagan, and Mike Smith will lead the club in Arizona beginning in July 2025 in partnership from Rachel Smith. In this conversation, we make sense of what all of that means.

We get into the behind-the-scenes details of her new role, how she's balancing coaching, both collegiate and professional athletes, and what it takes to develop elite runners at the highest level. We also touch on the mindset of success, the importance of culture, and the transition from NCAA to professional racing.

I'm Writing A Book! | THE MARATHON BOOK

    23 min Transcript
    View

    I’m writing a book!

I’m embarking on a new journey—this time, with words instead of miles. I'm thrilled to share that I’ve signed on with Dutton and Plume at Penguin Random House to write my first book: THE MARATHON BOOK (working title).

This is my love letter to the marathon—a deep dive into its greatest moments, the legends who redefined what’s possible, and the lessons we can all learn along the way (including my own pursuit of breaking 3 hours).

Think history, debates, interviews with some of the best to ever do it, and a whole lot of storytelling that captures what makes this race so special. From Pheidippides to the wildest performances at the Olympics, Boston, New York and other marquee races—I can’t wait to dig into it all.

Whether you’re training for your first marathon, chasing a PR, or just love a good sports story, I can’t wait to share this with you.

Follow @themarathonbook on Instagram to keep up with my process and updates.

So much more to come, but for now—I’m just at the starting line. Let’s go.

“I had to really sit down and look at the journey, how far I’ve come, what I was able to accomplish in such a short time in my opinion, and just everything that I went through. It doesn’t haunt me. Like I said, I'm a graceful loser. But I'm training and I'm doing the work to make sure that if I'm ever in that position again – we'll see!”

My guest for today's episode is Shafiqua Maloney, a name that maybe most track and field fans don't know, but should. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, she made history as the first athlete from Saint Vincent and the Grenadines to reach an Olympic final and finish fourth in the women's 800m, but her journey to that starting line was anything but easy.

In the past few years, Shafiqua has faced struggles that most athletes never talk about – months of homelessness, the constant battle of pursuing an elite career without a sponsor or financial stability. Yet through it all, she never gave up. With the unwavering support of her mother, her coach, and her faith, she found a way to persevere and it all came together in Paris where she ran 1:57 on the biggest stage in the sport.

Today, we talk about how she fought through those times, what it means to represent her country on such a big stage, and what comes next for an athlete determined to keep proving she belongs among the world's best. She'll be one of the headliners for the 2025 Millrose Games on February 8th in New York City. If you're in the area, get your tickets now.

“They said the race is going to start at 16K – I have to stay patient for that to finish the race strong. That was true. I felt at 16K, ‘Okay, now I am racing.’ This year, just knowing how it feels, was very helpful. I trusted my training and how well I’ve been doing in workouts. It was like, ‘Let's go out there and finish this race.’”

My guest for today's episode is Weini Kelati, who's becoming synonymous with record breaking performances on the roads. Just last weekend at the 2025 Houston Half Marathon, Weini shattered her own American record, running 1:06:09 to take 16 seconds off the mark she set at the same race last year, battling cold temperatures, gusting winds, and a loaded international field. She delivered a gutsy performance, finishing second overall behind Ethiopia's Senayet Getachew.

In this episode, we dive into Weini’s journey over the past few months from setting personal bests on the track to her debut at the Paris Olympics. We hear about her mindset going into Houston, the tough moments she overcame during the race, and why she's curious about pushing herself to even faster times. Plus, we discuss how this record fits into her broader goals for 2025 and beyond. Yes, we also talk about her potential in the marathon. Weini continues to cement herself as one of the best distance runners in the country.

“I still have a lot of potential that I see in myself and I have a lot I want to do. I still really care about this. I don't want to fade into the distance. I really want to leave a mark still. I feel like there's still stones left unturned.”

My guest for today's episode is Emily Infeld, who has been a mainstay on the U.S. women's distance running scene on the track for the past decade. She is a world championship medalist in the 10,000m, a 2016 U.S. Olympian, and now a Brooks sponsored athlete getting ready to navigate an exciting new chapter.

After a challenging 2024 season filled with injury and transition, Emily is poised for a comeback that blends her love of track racing with aspirations for longer distances on the roads. In this episode, we talk about her decision to join Brooks, her reflections on the past 12 years being part of the Nike Bowerman Track Club, Team Boss, being coached by John Green, and why she's chasing one more big track season.

She also opens up about the highs and lows of injury setbacks, the investment by shoe brands into women in their 30s, and why she believes her best days are still ahead, whether it's on the track, the roads, or even the marathon.

“Immediately after dropping out of the Trials, Kurt [Benninger] was very quick to be like, ‘You will see the benefits of this. It's not today, but this is not for nothing.’ It's nice to come full circle 11 months later and get that payoff.”

My guest for today’s episode is Erika Kemp, fresh off a remarkable performance at the 2025 Houston Marathon, where she shattered her personal best by 11 minutes to finish second in 2:22:56. This race wasn’t just a breakthrough; it was a statement. Erika now ranks 12th on the all-time U.S. marathon list and has cemented her place as one of the top American distance runners.

We dive into how Erika turned setbacks, like her tough day at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials, into fuel for her Houston success. She shares what it’s been like working with coach Kurt Benninger, her approach to marathon training, and how she’s taking confidence from a performance like this for her career moving forward, whether it’s chasing another World Marathon Major or earning a spot on the U.S. team for the World Championships.

“I know that track is fast and with the energy that the crowd brings and the fields that show up at Millrose, it's going to be a great competition. You go to Millrose to win and you're racing to win. That's what brings the fast times. I'm going to put myself in a position to compete for the win and hopefully walk away really happy.”

My guest for today's episode is Josette Andrews, who is going to be one of the headliners at the 2025 Millrose Games on February 8th at the Armory in New York City. Tickets for the meet are on sale now at millrosegames.org

Who else is in the field you might be wondering? As of right now, I have a preliminary entry list. I don't know if some things have changed since these names were added into this document, but we've got Josette Andrews, Karissa Schweizer, Tsige Gebreselama, Whittni Morgan, Courtney Wayment, Katelyn Tuohy, Elly Henes, Sarah Healy, Melissa Courtney-Bryant, Gabbi Jennings, Hilda Olemomoi, Nozomi Tanaka, and so many more competitors and loaded races in the mile, the 800m, the 60m hurdles, and 60m dash. Lots to look forward to. We'll be on-site for that meet.

In this episode, Josette and I talk a little bit about that because we're both East Coast people. She's from Jersey, 20 minutes away from the Armory, and I'm, of course, a proud New Yorker who will take any opportunity to boast about the Millrose Games. We talk about the energy and atmosphere of the Millrose Games, but then in addition to that, we reflect on Josette's 2024 season, which wasn't perfect. She dealt with a foot injury, which sidelined her throughout spring and forced her to open up her season at the Olympic Trials, which wasn't easy. She ended up finishing 11th in the 5K, did a couple of races after that, but then really took time to heal in the fall. We get an update on how training's been going, her goals for 2025, and what else she's looking forward to this year.

“I was like, ‘I just want to run fast.’ My ‘A’ goal for this race was to break the American record. If I was fifth, sixth, first—I didn’t really care. I was just concerned about the American record. That’s all that was going through my mind.”

My guest for today's episode is Conner Mantz, the newly minted American record holder in the half marathon. Conner's historic performance at the 2025 Houston Half saw him cross the finish line in 59:17, taking a remarkable 26 seconds off Ryan Hall's long standing record from 2007.

Conner joins us to break down every step of that historic performance, from his strategic surges, to his final kick, and how he overcame setbacks in training to achieve one of the most coveted records in American distance running. He reflects on his journey from running his first half marathon at age 12 to becoming the fastest American over the distance.

Few athletes embody the spirit of curiosity and courage quite like Sifan Hassan. From her historic triple attempt at the Tokyo Olympics to her remarkable gold medal in the marathon and double bronze on the track in Paris, Hassan has redefined what’s possible in distance running. Hassan also shares her ambitious plans for 2025 and beyond, from chasing Ruth Chepngetich’s stunning 2:09:56 marathon world record to potentially attempting an unprecedented four major marathons in one year. What drives someone who has already achieved so much? Hassan’s answer is as compelling as her racing: it’s not about being the GOAT — it’s about pushing the limits of what she can do. Before we get to Boston, the elite American [half-]marathoning circuit kicks off this Sunday in Houston, Texas, where fast times historically abound thanks to pancake flat topography, mild Texas “winters,” and top-tier talent converging from all across the country and world. And while the rest of us were deep in winter hibernation, plenty of the sport’s best and brightest spent their holiday season with one weekend in January circled on the calendar.

CITIUS MAG’s been cooking up an exciting behind-the-scenes docuseries following Conner Mantz, Clayton Young, and Joe Klecker as they prepare for the Houston Half. [Check out the trailer here, and stay tuned for the first episode, which premieres later today… like, subscribe, etcetera!] Klecker has already gone on record stating that the American record—59:43, set by Ryan Hall back at this same race in 2007—is something he’s been training toward in his debut at the distance.

But perhaps the most likely American record performance may come from the very athlete who already holds the women’s mark: Weini Kelati. At Houston last year—are you sensing a trend here?—Kelati ran 1:06:25 in her debut at the distance, kicking off a banner year highlighted by an eighth-place finish in the Olympic 10,000m. With her confidence buoyed and another full year of training under her belt, Kelati seems poised for a big day.

Chris Chavez chatted with Kelati’s coach, Stephen Haas, to check in on what fans might expect come Sunday, and learn a bit more about Kelati’s preparation with her Under Armour Mission Run Dark Sky Distance teammates in Flagstaff, Arizona. (Read the full interview here.)

“To win a world championship title in my country, then break world records and British records all the way throughout the season, then make it to the Olympics and run a personal best on the biggest stage – you can't walk away disappointed with that or else you're just going to hate the sport. I'm happy with how the year went.”

Few athletes in the world of track and field command attention like Josh Kerr. The reigning 1500m World champion and Olympic silver medalist returns to The CITIUS MAG Podcast today to reflect on a monumental 2024 season and to share exciting news: Josh is officially set to race the Wanamaker Mile at the 2025 Millrose Games.

In this episode, we dig into Josh’s takeaways from a season that included personal bests, thrilling head-to-head battles, and some of the most competitive 1500m races in history.

We also discuss his return to the mile distance, his rivalry with Yared Nuguse, and what makes the Wanamaker Mile one of the most coveted titles in indoor track. Josh doesn’t just run fast—he runs with purpose. And today, he gives us a glimpse into the mindset, strategy, and fire that fuel one of the best middle-distance runners in the world.

Known for his meticulous approach to racing and his ability to thrive on the sport’s biggest stages, Josh enters the new year with ambitious goals, including sweeping the Grand Slam Track series and defending his World Championship title.

“That race felt like everything I wanted in a 1500m wrapped up into one perfect race… It was a crazy fast race where we were basically going all out. Everyone was in it together, especially with that last dramatic kick where you still didn't know who was going to win with 200m to go.”

Yared Nuguse has cemented himself as one of the best stars in middle-distance running. With a bronze medal in the 1500m at the Paris Olympics, Yared made history alongside Cole Hocker, marking the first time in 112 years that Team USA claimed multiple medals in the event. Add to that a silver medal in the 3000m at the World Indoor Championships earlier in 2024, and it’s safe to say Yared’s season was nothing short of remarkable.

Today, Yared joins The CITIUS MAG Podcast to reflect on his breakout year and to share the exciting news that he’ll be racing the Wanamaker Mile at the 2025 Millrose Games. The showdown between Yared and reigning World champion Josh Kerr promises to be one of the highlights of the indoor season, and we dive into how Yared is preparing for the challenge.

We also discuss his evolution as a global medal contender, the lessons learned from two World Championship campaigns, and his mindset as he continues to push the limits of American middle-distance running. It’s always inspiring to hear from one of the sport’s most talented and thoughtful athletes.

“At that point, it's all about your preparation and mental game. In those last few weeks, there's not really a lot you can do to get better. I knew going in: ‘This is what I've got. I've got to bring the best out of myself.’”

Marco Arop is the reigning World champion and Olympic silver medalist in the 800 meters. Marco isn’t just one of the fastest men in the world—he’s one of the most fearless. In 2024, he clocked a blazing 1:41.20 to set the North American record and move up to No. 4 on the all-time list. Now, he’s setting his sights on breaking the seemingly untouchable 1:40.91 world record—a mission his team has dubbed ‘Project 99.’

But Marco isn’t stopping there. He’s bringing his talent and ambition to Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam Track for its inaugural season in 2025, joining a star-studded lineup of middle-distance legends like Josh Kerr, Cole Hocker, and Yared Nuguse. Known for his dominance in the 800 meters, Marco will also test his limits in the 1500, pushing himself and the competition in ways we’ve never seen before.

Marco joins us to reflect on his incredible 2024 season, discuss the challenges of Grand Slam Track, and share his journey toward becoming the first man to run an 800m under 100 seconds.

14:00 - Thoughts on racing both the 800m and 1500m for GST

17:01 - How competing in GST will benefit his race tactics

    18:38 - His potential as a 1500m runner

    20:39 - Thoughts on being the X factor in GST’s 800m/1500m category

21:59 - How he thinks his GST competitors will race against him

23:27 - Who he wants to see come in as a challenger for GST

“Being able to build off that 2023 year and have momentum going into 2024 is what created all those PRs, created all those achievements. It's like, ‘I did it this year – why can't I do it again?’ That was my mindset going into 2024. I'm trying to reach bigger goals in 2025 as well.”

My guest for today's episode is Caleb Dean, one of the most electrifying athletes in collegiate track and field. If you're listening to this when it gets released on Thursday morning, he's also a finalist for the Bowerman, which is the highest honor in college track and field. It's like the Heisman Trophy. The award ceremony is tonight. Caleb is one of three finalists, so in a couple of hours you'll find out whether or not he wins.

He had a remarkable 2024 season, earning the title of USTFCCCA Men's National Track Athlete of the Year and also made history as the first Division One male to win both the 60m hurdles indoors and the 400m hurdles outdoors in the same year.

At the NCAA Outdoor Championships, he delivered a jaw-dropping 47.23 in the 400m hurdles, which is the second-fastest time in NCAA history and the 11th fastest in the world all-time. He ended up finishing the year No. 4 in the world.

Unfortunately, he did not qualify for the U.S. Olympic team in the 400m hurdles after clipping a hurdle and falling in the race. He had to stay home and watch the race. We talked a little bit about that in this episode. He managed to pull all this off after battling injuries for much of the outdoor season, making his resilience and his ability to peak when it all counts even more impressive.

We also have some news to share in this episode: he has signed on as the final racer for Grand Slam Track’s 400m and 400m hurdles group. He'll be committed to racing in Miami, Kingston, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles at the four slams next year. He shot his shot: he DM'ed CITIUS MAG, he DM'ed Kyle Merber, and he DM'ed Grand Slam Track looking for a spot in the new professional track league. And guess what? He got it. So shoot your shot, kids.

With his sights set on 2025, it's going to be a hard year to top 2024, but I'm optimistic after this conversation with Caleb.

“I would love to improve my indoor personal best. I mean, the next bar up from [4.91m] would be an indoor American record, that five-meter barrier. So you go 4.92m for a meeting record and then why not put it up to something like that? It’s a very natural increment. I would love to get that record for sure, and then hopefully a couple more.”

My guest for today’s episode is Katie Moon, an Olympic and 2x World Champion in the women’s pole vault. Moon added to her trophy case in 2024, claiming a World Indoor bronze medal and an Olympic silver. She accomplished all this despite fighting with an Achilles injury that delayed her outdoor opener until late May and affected her training all season.

In our conversation, Katie gave us some insight into her offseason, reflected on a successful yet hampered 2024 campaign, and looked forward to what’s sure to be a banner year for her in 2025.

One of the first steps for Katie next season will be a trip to The Armory to compete in her fifth Millrose Games. She shared her excitement for returning to the iconic meet and the idea that she might have something big up her sleeve come February 8th. You can get your tickets at The Armory’s website.

“Even though I wasn't winning every race against the top guys, I still had the confidence that I could win every race if I put it together. I know that if I run my race and run the best that I can, I can win against anybody. I still believe that to this day.”

Our guest for today's episode is Daniel Roberts, the Olympic silver medalist in the 110m hurdles. Over the last two years, Daniel has proven that he belongs on the global podium, grabbing bronze at the 2023 World Championships and backing it up with a hard-fought runner-up finish in Paris this past summer. He's also a three-time U.S. champion and one of just a handful of Americans to dip under the 13 second mark with a personal best of 12.96 from this year's Olympic Trials. Now he's setting his sights on the 2025 indoor season and returning to the historic Millrose Games in New York City where he'll contest the 60m hurdles.

Daniel knows a thing or two about this meet. He's a former champion from 2020 and has twice been the runner-up including earlier this year – but as he recently switched back to a seven-step approach, which he explains, he's feeling sharp and ready to make another statement on one of track and field's most iconic stages.

My guest host for this one is Anderson Emerole, who chats with Daniel Roberts about his journey to becoming a global medalist, the adjustments he's made to stay at the top, and what makes Millrose and New York City so special for him.
