Addressing the Dropout in Swimming

On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we discuss and address the reasons that many teenagers leave the sport when in reality their swimming journey has just begun!

There are so many reasons that kids drop out of swimming. It could be a change in interests, clashes with a coach, burnout, job opportunities, and many more. For me, I struggled to understand with a lack of improvement in the pool and why my times all of a sudden stopped falling. It was never explained to me that when I hit 16/17 that my body may have stopped changing and PB's were going to be a lot harder to come by. This combined with a clash in training style with my coach meant I turned my focus quickly towards study and academia.

I clearly love the sport of swimming, that never went, I now co-run a successful swimming YouTube, so are there any adjustments that could have happened during my journey through the sport that meant I didn't leave the pool so soon?

On this week's Propulsion Swimming Podcast we take a deep dive into how we can stop kids from dropping out of the sport, which is especially important given this prolonged period out of the water. Does swimming in the UK have a fundamental issue with times being the gold standard and not enjoyment? And if there is an adjustment towards enjoying racing, winning, and points competitions - like many competitions are across the pond - would we see more swimmers stay racing for a longer time?

If you only listen to one of our podcasts this year, please make it this one. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic!!

Breaststroke Advice, plus we talk ISL and Olympics!!

For the final Propulsion Swimming Podcast of 2020 we are talking with German Superstar Marco Koch!!! Marco is a former world champion and world record holder in the 200m Breaststroke!

Marco talks through with us all the tips he would give Breaststrokers out there, from not perfecting one stroke but finding a nice variety that works for you on any given day, to how to find your race pace!

He discusses his ISL experience; missing out on the 200m SC WR,  those controversial dolphin kicks and swimming through a groin injury. We also look forward to Tokyo 2021 and how he's in a much better place thanks to the year delay.

This is the podcast you really don't want to miss!!

Are Swimmers Over Training?

This week on the Propulsion Swimming Podcast we are discussing where swimmers are over training using current professional training methods.

After Swim Swam reported this week that 58% of 5,800 recorded swims since the coronavirus in USA swimming were personal bests, it got us thinking whether there is any correlation to the enforced break and these faster times.

We debate if the training methods that boxing uses, of three months intense training camp, before a competition is something that can be considered and the pros and cons of both Quantity and Quality training.

How To Get Back Into Swimming Shape Safely

In this episode of the Propulsion Swimming Podcast we are talking about a topic we've wanted to cover for such a long time, returning to training safely. Many swimmers have now spent the longest period out of pool since they first starting swimming, so it is imperative to adjust focus when getting back in the pool.

We discuss how swimmers should now be aiming to correct their technique and avoiding injury rather than quickly aiming to get back into competitive swimming shape and fitness.
