Anger is often seen as a negative and destructive emotion. However, our special guest in this episode challenges this perception and argues that anger is actually a healthy emotion that should be embraced and understood. She encourages individuals, particularly women in the second season of life, the menopause phase, to recognize that anger is a valid and necessary emotion.

Today, I had the pleasure of interviewing a renowned Psychotherapist, Bronwyn Schweigerdt, LMFT, who shares her insights and expertise on managing anger during menopause. We delve into the reasons behind anger, how to navigate it, and why it's important to address the underlying emotions causing it.

Bronwyn's approach to therapy is truly unique. Instead of simply fixing people's problems, she aims to elicit the feelings we often bury deep inside ourselves. Rage, hatred, and anger - these emotions may be invisible, but they don't just disappear. She believes that by acknowledging and processing these emotions, we can unlock a path to mental wellness and even prevent the onset of mental illness. It's a powerful reminder that our emotions deserve validation and exploration.

I'm truly grateful to have had the opportunity to speak with Bronwyn and share her invaluable insights with all of you. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to navigate their emotions, improve their mental well-being, and cultivate a healthier relationship with anger.

[00:29:53] Podcast: "Angry at the Right Things."

[00:30:16] The power of anger.

Memorable Quotes

"We're going to feel some anger. And that's a natural human response. So, there's no such thing as an angry person, just like there's no such thing as a breathing person. It's okay to be angry." – Bronwyn Schweigerdt, LMFT

"Being true to ourselves, not betraying ourselves, it's going to piss people off. It is. And we're going to have to be okay with disappointing people. You know, a lot of us were raised, don't disappoint mom and dad, don't disappoint, don't disappoint. You know what? In order to be our authentic selves and not betray ourselves and therefore not be depressed and not be anxious, we're going to have to make some people mad." – Bronwyn Schweigerdt, LMFT

Did you know that women make 87% of all buying decisions in the home, including health-related choices? As the primary decision-makers, we have the power to shape our family's health and well-being. In this episode, we shed light on the importance of women taking the lead in prioritizing health and making informed decisions to support the men in their lives in improving their health and well-being.

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Dr. Tracy Gapin for this week's episode. He's a Board-Certified Urologist, renowned expert in men's health and performance, and the Founder of the Gapin Institute, the global leader in High Performance Health. As much as I love answering your questions about women's health, I realized that I needed to bring in an expert to shed light on the important topic of men's health. Dr. Tracy shares valuable insights and practical tips on how to support your man's health journey.

We also dive into Dr. Tracy's journey into the functional medicine community and how he became passionate about helping men achieve optimal health. His expertise and enthusiasm are truly inspiring, and I know you'll find his story captivating.

But that's not all! We also discuss the power of purpose and accountability, and how they can drive us to achieve our health goals. Dr. Tracy shares his thoughts on setting atomic habits and staying focused on our why. You won't want to miss these valuable nuggets of wisdom!

And for all the ladies out there, Dr. Tracy offers advice on how to start a conversation with your husband about taking the next steps towards better health. We all know it can be challenging to broach this topic without sounding like a nag, but Dr. Tracy has some fantastic suggestions to make the conversation productive and supportive.

Key Takeaways:

[00:00:07] Testosterone levels decline with age.

[00:05:37] Men's resistance to making changes.

[00:06:11] Shifting men's health paradigm.

[00:09:23] Advanced diagnostic testing and protocols.

[00:13:01] Men's mental health crisis.

[00:15:03] Testosterone levels and health.

[00:17:48] Toxins and low testosterone.

[00:21:21] Scheduling self-care and mindfulness.

[00:23:36] Women's role in healthcare.

[00:26:16] Men's health and telehealth.

Memorable Quotes

"But when their sexual performance starts to decline, suddenly they're willing to come in and seek help. And so, my emphasis, my priority, my focus when it comes to really shifting the men's health paradigm is to get men to think about it very differently and to take a very proactive approach." – Dr. Tracy Gapin

"So that is my big why. And everything I do revolves around that. And every decision I make, is it in alignment with my why. And if it's not, then it doesn't belong in my life because it doesn't serve my higher purpose. And so, it helps me get grounded. It helps me really focus on my purpose and it helps drive me to do the hard things that you don't want to do." – Dr. Tracy Gapin

Menopause is not a one-size-fits-all experience. We all have different needs and challenges during this season of life. Our special guest today emphasizes the importance of recognizing our unique circumstances and tailoring our approach to menopause accordingly. It's about finding what works best for us and embracing our individual journey.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Catherine Staffieri, an incredible individual who understands the challenges we face and is dedicated to helping people navigate the challenges of menopause. She is a Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist currently working as a Nutrition Manager at Nutrisense. Together, we delve into the topic of blood sugar and its impact on women's health during menopause and the importance of taking charge of our health before things go too far down the line. We discussed how we can prevent and navigate through menopause with grace and vitality.

Catherine emphasizes the importance of personalized nutrition and exercise, highlighting that what works for one person may not work for another and the value of working with a Nutritionist to decipher data and make necessary changes. We also discuss the use of Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) as a tool to gain a deeper understanding of blood sugar levels, and the significance of body composition, movement, and individual health factors in finding the best approach.

Tune in to learn more about optimizing your health and vitality during this transformative season of life!

Key Takeaways:

[00:01:36] Blood sugar and CGMs.

[00:03:47] Glucose monitoring and understanding.

[00:05:29] Prevention is key for health.

[00:06:39] Nutrition in preventative medicine.

[00:09:35] CGM tracks health.

[00:11:58] Glucose response to stress.

[00:15:04] Wearing a CGM in a sports bra.

[00:16:18] Higher fasting glucose levels.

[00:19:44] Under eating and nourishment.

[00:20:27] Personalized nutrition is key.

[00:22:34] CGM and understanding our bodies.

[00:23:39] Real-time data empowers lifestyle changes.

[00:24:30] Hormone reader and data analysis.

Memorable Quotes

"If you're eating late at night, these kinds of things. That's not healthy. That means that the glucoses are floating around in your system, looking for a place to go, looking for a place to go. No one's using me. Nothing's happening. That's when we see that there's something wrong here." – Catherine Staffieri

"So, we're here to help you take all of that data about your life and make your life better, like make you feel better, help you achieve your goals based on that data. And that's really, I think, the most powerful part of having a CGM on and having someone to guide you through that process." – Catherine Staffieri

Reframing Menopause

21 min Chapters
View

As we wrap up Menopause Awareness Month, it's important to reflect on the challenges and opportunities that menopause presents for women. Menopause is not just a natural process; it is a medical health crisis that affects every aspect of a woman's life. From physical health to mental well-being, menopause has a profound impact on women's overall quality of life.

Join me in this week's episode as I discuss the need to address menopause as a medical health crisis. I criticize the current approach of medicalizing menopause as a cognitive behavior therapy problem and emphasize the importance of understanding menopause as a physiological change and a sign of accelerated aging.

I also argue that menopause is a public health crisis that requires attention from both the medical community and businesses, and highlights the role of the ovaries in influencing various body systems and emphasizes the need for interventions that go beyond symptom management.

Let's break the silence around menopause and demand better solutions for women's health. It's time to invest in research and interventions that address the underlying hormone imbalances and improve our quality of life!

Key Takeaways:

[0:02:10] Frustration with the lack of comprehensive menopause apps.

[0:03:28] Critique of the cognitive behavioral therapy approach to menopause.

[0:05:01] Menopause as a medical health crisis.

[0:05:40] Aging as a medicalized process and the need for research.

[0:07:35] The economic impact of menopause on businesses and the workplace.

[0:08:30] The impact of menopause on heart health, brain function, and metabolism.

[0:12:18] Living past reproductive age is not natural.

[0:12:47] Medicalizing menopause with band-aid drugs is not the solution.

[0:13:49] The healthcare system needs to address the underlying problem.

[0:14:30] The US has the worst healthcare outcomes and needs change.

[0:15:02] Hormones affect personal and financial prosperity.

[0:16:00] Menopause needs to be medicalized for research funding.

[0:17:35] Businesses need to support women in menopause transition.

[0:18:55] Menopause is a public health crisis, time for change.

[0:20:23] Now is the time to step up and make a difference.

Memorable Quotes

"The truth is we suffer, and women suffer every day, and we suffer at work, we suffer at home, we suffer everywhere because it affects everything from productivity to well-being. And the truth is, what I was writing about in the Brains magazine is this is costing billions of dollars to businesses by ignoring it and by the medical system basically considering it a headspace problem for women and that you just need to learn how to think about it differently. " – Betty Murray

"We have the ability to step in and change these things for women and make by 2030 women in this age group a real force to be reckoned with. And so, if you also are really frustrated by what you see in the world, now's the time to step up." – Betty Murray

The Secret to Mastering Time & Energy with Mel Ross

35 min Chapters
View

Feminine energy is a transformative power. If one looks at history and the history books, there are several powerful women who embodied feminine energy, and I believe there is a reconnection with feminine energy during menopause, a time for women to reflect on whether it is a time to give up or step into power.

In this episode, I had the privilege of speaking with a remarkable woman, Mel Ross, who experienced a profound shift in her life and has tapped into her deepest desires during her second season of life - menopause. She shares her personal journey of feeling a shift in her experience during menopause. She didn't have the typical awful symptoms that many women talk about, but she felt like she was channeling valuable information and data. This newfound perspective prompted her to start her own podcast and embrace the extraordinary capacity women have during this season of life to create change in the world. It's a reminder that menopause can be a time of empowerment and growth.

Mel is an Executive Mentor and Coach, working with leaders to drive successful transformation at an organizational level, and she encourages women to embrace the changes they experience during menopause and find avenues to create the change they want to see in the world. Whether it's pursuing a new passion, making a difference in their communities, or simply embracing their own personal growth, this episode reminds us that we have the power to create the life we desire.

To make this episode even more valuable, Mel generously offers two special gifts for you - documents that share her morning and evening routines. These routines have been proven effective and have been used by her clients' time and time again. If you're looking to establish a routine that works and supports your goals, these resources are a must-have.

I encourage you to listen to this episode and share it with your friends who might benefit from its wisdom. Together, let's spread the love and rise to new heights!

Key Takeaways:

[00:00:03] Feminine energy is power.

[00:06:48] Opening up during menopause.

[00:07:21] Embrace ancient wisdom and technology.

[00:10:17] Getting older and getting stronger.

[00:12:14] Reconnect with curiosity and possibility.

[00:14:00] Small shifts for transformation.

[00:17:16] Harness feminine energy for influence.

[00:21:40] Time, energy, and attention management.

[00:23:33] Time mastery and mindset.

[00:29:45] Importance of morning and evening routines.

And I think, for me, one of the things that I've realized is that T (time), prime energy and attention If we're able to, and actually every single one of us is able to master these elements, then what we're doing is we're giving ourselves the strongest foundations for thriving into the future." – Mel Ross

Top Lab Tests Every Woman Over 40 Needs NOW

41 min Chapters
View

Hormone testing is of utmost importance when it comes to women's health. It provides valuable insights into the functioning of the endocrine system and can help identify potential hormonal imbalances or deficiencies.

In this week's episode, I delve into this topic that I believe is crucial for every woman in the second season of life - the season of menopause, and explore the importance of hormone testing and how it can empower us to make informed decisions about our health and well-being.

As women, we often rely on our intuition, which is undoubtedly powerful. However, combining our intuition with concrete information can provide us with a more comprehensive understanding of our bodies. That's why I'm excited to share with you the major hormone test that I believe every woman needs to have. Whether you're in the midst of this journey or have already passed through it, testing can provide valuable insights into your hormonal balance and help you make informed decisions about your health.

Discover why hormone testing is a game-changer and how it can guide you towards optimal well-being. Whether you're considering hormone replacement therapy, suspect adrenal or thyroid issues, or simply want to gain a deeper understanding of your hormonal health, this episode is a must-listen! I'll break down the complexities of hormone testing and provide practical insights on how to integrate the results into your daily life.

Key Takeaways:

[00:00:03] Women's intuition and hormone testing.

[00:05:10] Hormone imbalances in women.

[00:06:48] Thyroid hormone testing is important.

[00:40:27] Joining the hormone reset group.

Memorable Quotes

"I was one of those people that I wanted to find a pill, a powder, bio hack, a mechanism to bypass having to do the hard work. And all those things will help, but they're not going to get you where you want to go. You have to protect the sleep. You have to do meditation. You have to do those things that help re-regulate your immune system." – Betty Murray

"And I truly, truly believe that in order for us to feel empowered, we need to have all the data. And this test can be a way to look at if I am taking hormones, whatever hormones you're taking, how is my body packaging those after use to get rid of one? And because there are pathways that are more favorable and there are pathways that are less favorable. And so, at the end of the day, you want to know that." – Betty Murray

Do I Have Long Haul COVID?

40 min Chapters
View

Long haul COVID, also known as post-acute sequelae of COVID-19, refers to the persistent symptoms and effects that some individuals experience even after recovering from the acute phase of COVID-19. It affects women more than men, as revealed by a survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.

COVID-19 has been highly politicized and polarizing, but in this episode, I focus purely on the statistics and the likelihood of persistent problems associated with long COVID to help you understand if you may be experiencing persistent health problems related to the virus. The statistics are shocking, and it's crucial to be informed about the potential risks and challenges.

We all know how important sleep is for our overall well-being, but did you know that it can also play a crucial role in recovering from illness? In this episode, I also discuss the importance of creating a sleep-friendly environment and share tips on staying off blue light devices, using amber glasses, and incorporating anti-inflammatory activities.

Additionally, it's important to have a strong immune system, especially during these challenging times. Tune in as I explore anti-inflammatory activities and the power of incorporating fruits, vegetables, and high polyphenol foods into your diet. These simple yet effective steps can help support your immune system and enhance your overall well-being.

Key Takeaways:

[00:02:03] Long COVID statistics.

[00:04:05] Long COVID affects women more.

[00:08:19] Ongoing COVID infection.

[00:11:08] Long COVID may be causing chronic symptoms.

[00:12:41] ACE2 receptor-mediated tissue damage.

[00:16:33] Inflammatory response of spike protein.

[00:18:05] Vaccine can cause chronic inflammation.

[00:19:27] Chronic inflammatory response.

[00:24:41] Addressing metabolic disorder.

[00:27:25] Supporting your immune system is crucial for overall health.

[00:28:15] Arterosil and blood vessel protection.

[00:32:32] Long haul symptoms can emerge months after mild COVID cases.

[00:33:06] Hair loss after COVID.

[00:34:11] Factors influencing COVID susceptibility.

[00:38:38] Arteriosclerotic product mentioned.

Memorable Quotes

"That's why many people experience symptoms after a vaccine, and particularly that vaccine, but we see quite a few people that have vaccine injury from that. There was a very good article that came out this last week about gaslighting and how the medical system, particularly in the United States, need to quit pretending that people aren't injured from this vaccine, because they are, and a lot of it is this chronic inflammatory response." – Betty Murray

"So, a lot of the individuals that have have been diagnosed with long haul to had the acute illness, maybe got over it, and then had this sort of read emergence three to six months later, where all of these other symptoms started to occur." – Betty Murray

Many women often feel a sense of disconnection during menopause, as they associate themselves with their younger selves. However, it's important to embrace our emotional, spiritual, and mental aspects as well. When we integrate all these pieces, we become unstoppable!

In our latest episode of the Menopause Mastery, I had the pleasure of speaking with Lana Kerr, a Certified Nutrition Consultant, Emotional Intelligence Coach, and Founder and CEO of Lumisque, a company that provides skincare products to medical providers as well as through e-commerce. We delved into a subject that may be a little uncomfortable for some but is incredibly important for all women to address – menopause and the concept of the CO2 lift and its potential benefits for women's sexual function.

Lana and I fearlessly tackle subjects that are often considered taboo or uncomfortable for women to discuss openly. From menopause to weight loss, we shed light on these important issues and provide a safe space for women to explore and find solutions. By breaking the silence and fostering open conversations, we empower women to take control of their health and well-being.

Lana opens up about the transformative experience of reaching menopause and how it can be a pivotal moment for women to redefine their purpose and impact on the world. She shared her personal journey and how she transitioned from the weight loss industry to discovering the power of CO2 lift for menopausal women. Her extensive experience working with major corporations and contributing to her community adds depth and insight to our discussion, and her expertise in using Carboxy Gel and Carbon Dioxide for skin rejuvenation will leave you feeling inspired and empowered.

Now more than ever, we need to amplify women's voices in our society. This episode emphasizes the importance of women sharing their experiences and perspectives, as it can inspire and empower others. Let's support and uplift each other on this journey!

Key Takeaways:

[00:02:10] Skincare company and rejuvenation.

[00:06:23] CO2 Lift improves skin hydration.

[00:05:00] Investing in skin health.

[00:09:26] Vaginal and vulvar health.

[00:10:30] CO2 Lift technology and its effects.

[00:12:33] Prevent and improve vaginal atrophy.

[00:14:36] Educating women on preventative options.

[00:15:03] Clitoral health and blood flow.

[00:18:09] Sexual function and play.

[00:21:28] Changing the negativity of menopause.

[00:24:09] Starting menopause conversations.

[00:27:13] Vitiligo and skin treatments.

[00:29:07] Improving intimacy in relationships.

Memorable Quotes

"Most things that I get involved in, even with the weight loss, it was something that I for myself needed. And so, when I find a solution, it's a natural passion to share it with others. So, I started having some concerns for myself, where sexual intimacy was concerned when I got into my mid-40s. I felt very different, things were changing, and I couldn't really identify. I just knew that I wasn't enjoying sexual intercourse in the same way. " – Lana Kerr

"I'm so glad you're having these conversations. And I kind of wish that we had it even when I was younger, like when I was in my 30. I wish, because then you have the other challenges that come with even after childbirth, what happens down there, it changes. So having these types of conversations, making women understand that these things are normal, but guess what, we can fix it. And starting early, I think is important." – Lana Kerr

Did you know that inflammation can be the silent killer that leads to weight gain, accelerates the aging process, and even contributes to weight loss resistance? It's a fascinating subject that I believe every woman in the second season of life, the season of menopause, should be aware of.

Don't miss out on the wisdom I shared in this episode where I discuss the top 10 causes of inflammation and provide actionable steps on how to combat it. From eating clean, lean animal proteins to staying away from processed foods, I cover it all! I also touch upon the importance of incorporating whole grains and legumes into your diet, ideally sprouting, and cooking them yourself to reduce toxins.

Inflammation is a natural process in the body. The key is to address chronic inflammation, which can be detrimental to our overall well-being. By getting inflammation under control, we can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality associated with it, shed excess weight, and age more effectively. It's truly empowering information that can help you create the most exceptional life on your own terms. It's time to say goodbye to the silent killer and reclaim your vitality!

Key Takeaways:

[00:00:12] Inflammation and weight loss.

[00:04:02] Standard American diet and inflammation.

[00:06:02] Inflammation is necessary but can be harmful if chronic.

[00:09:37] Traditional lifestyle and longevity.

[00:11:16] Sugar as a preservative.

[00:15:11] Seed oils and inflammation.

[00:15:54] Avoid inflammatory foods and chemicals.

[00:18:28] Inflammatory dietary factors.

[00:21:21] Inflammation is influenced by lifestyle.

[00:23:39] Chronic inflammatory response.

[00:27:24] Gut health and weight gain.

[00:29:28] Inflammation and aging.

Memorable Quotes

"So, the inflammatory process is absolutely required for us to be able to survive on the planet, or we wouldn't be able to survive just a simple injury, but it's when that inflammatory process is amplified and especially when it's chronic all the time." – Betty Murray

"And until we can get that inflammation under control, it may be one of the major killers of weight loss at the same time, because we have to be able to get rid of the inflammatory response." – Betty Murray

Why You Should Try a CGM - Biohack Your Blood Sugar

38 min Chapters
View

Menopause is a natural biological process that occurs in women as they age, marking the end of their reproductive years. During this phase, women experience a range of symptoms due to hormonal changes, including hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, and increased risk of certain health conditions such as diabetes. Managing blood sugar levels becomes crucial during menopause, as fluctuations can have a significant impact on overall health and well-being. This is where Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) comes into play.

In this episode, I introduce the concept of CGMs and explore the benefits of wearing a CGM and how it can provide valuable insights into your body's response to different foods and activities. These innovative devices provide valuable data about our blood sugar levels, allowing us to make informed decisions about our health. By tracking your glucose levels continuously, you can make more informed choices about your diet and lifestyle, ultimately leading to better overall health and vitality.

As always, this episode emphasizes the power of community and support. If you found this information helpful, I encourage you to share it with your friends. Together, we can rise and empower more women to take charge of their health and create the most exceptional life on our terms.

Get your CGM with Theia: https://join.theiahealth.ai/c/bettymurray

Key Takeaways:

[00:02:40] CGMs explained.

[00:04:09] Glycemic load and microbiome.

[00:07:40] CGMs and blood glucose drivers.

[00:11:11] Impact of exercise on glucose levels.

[00:14:40] Poor sleep and blood sugar.

[00:18:12] Glucose monitoring and body temperature.

[00:22:24] Foods with reduced blood sugar impact.

[00:26:39] Protein and meal timing.

[00:29:36] Long-term fasting and blood glucose.

[00:33:32] CGMs provide valuable biohacking data.

[00:37:06] CGM and personalized insights.

Memorable Quotes

"Now, there are four major things that are gonna affect your blood sugar. So, obviously diet. Your physical activity, exercise, physical movement, you know, those kinds of things. Your stress level and what's happening in your life. And then also your sleep. Those are the four major drivers of blood glucose, and that's the real reason why I think CGMs are fabulous." – Betty Murray

"The ultimate thing of what you need to understand is that speed in which your blood sugar goes down, there's one hormone responsible for that, insulin, right? So, if I have a spike of my blood sugar and it drops fairly rapidly, I know that I have a pretty healthy insulin response or in some cases, in my case, I would say I have a pretty robust, maybe a little overly robust insulin response. We want insulin to do its job, but of course we don't need insulin to spike heavily. " – Betty Murray

33 min Chapters
View

PMS, cramps, bloating, and moodiness – we've all experienced these symptoms at some point in our lives. But did you know that these discomforts are often caused by the fluctuation of hormones, particularly estrogen and progesterone? As we enter our 30s and 40s, estrogen dominance becomes more prevalent, and it's crucial to understand how it impacts our bodies. Today I break down the science behind these symptoms and provides insights on how to manage them effectively.

Join me in this episode as I discuss the complexities of estrogen dominance and how it can impact our bodies during the transition to menopause. Whether you're already on the other side of menopause or just starting to navigate the transition, this episode will shed light on what's really going on inside your body.

As your host, Betty Murray, I am here to make the complex science of menopause easier to integrate into your daily life. With a dash of sass and a whole lot of wisdom, we'll explore the effects of estrogen dominance and how it can manifest in various symptoms such as PMS, cramps, bloating, and moodiness.

But it doesn't end there. I also delve into the importance of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and the need for adequate testing to ensure you're getting the right balance of hormones for your body. I share my expertise on testing methods, particularly in urine, which can provide insights into your free hormones and how well your body is detoxifying them.

Knowledge is power, ladies, and together, we can conquer any challenges that come our way! It's time to take control of our bodies and reclaim our vitality!

Key Takeaways:

[00:01:13] Estrogen dominance.

[00:05:50] Estrogen dominance and associated conditions.

[00:08:23] Estrogen dominance and immune function.

[00:11:45] Fluctuation of estrogen and autoimmune activity.

[00:15:08] Hormones and immune function.

[00:18:44] Hormonal imbalance and symptoms.

[00:24:40] Hormonal changes and ketchup bottles.

[00:25:17] Estrogen dominance and hormone replacement.

Memorable Quotes

"I was a woman in my 40s fighting with my body weight, fighting estrogen dominance, And I had pretty significant inflammatory activity because I was constantly fighting this inflammatory response. And I have an autoimmune history. So, to me, it felt like every time I was trying to put out the fire, somebody else was on the other side pouring gasoline on it and causing it to burn more. And so, it was just this constant sort of battle is how it felt to me." – Betty Murray

"And I am a proponent for progesterone replacement and estrogen replacement, even testosterone in women, because, you know, I know that aging is the number one cause of risk factor for all cause mortality. So, if I can slow the aging process by retaining natural hormone balance, that's always better." – Betty Murray

Balancing Caregiving and Self-Care

38 min Chapters
View

Caregiving can be emotionally challenging. Today's episode emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and addressing the emotional needs of caregivers. It highlights the lack of knowledge, accessibility, and capacity to navigate these emotions, leading to emotional distress and potential long-term consequences. Caregivers must prioritize their own well-being to provide the best care for their loved ones.

When we are caring for others, especially those close to us, it can be easy to neglect our own needs. As caregivers, we often put ourselves on the back burner and forget to schedule time for self-care. However, it's crucial to recognize that the decisions we make as caregivers have a significant emotional impact. Taking care of ourselves is not the same as saying no to extra work hours; it's about finding a balance and ensuring we are emotionally equipped to care for our loved ones.

Additionally, I touch upon the challenges of balancing work and self-care, especially for those who are juggling part-time jobs without proper compensation. While I don't have all the answers, I share my own experiences and struggles in finding the right balance and discuss the importance of prioritizing our physical, mental, and emotional health.

As caregivers, it's common to suppress our own emotional state in favor of focusing on the tasks at hand. However, neglecting our emotional well-being can have long-term consequences. It's crucial to allow ourselves the space and time to feel, process, and experience our emotions. By acknowledging and addressing our emotional needs, we can prevent these emotions from being pushed into our bodies and causing further harm.

Key Takeaways:

[00:00:00] Caregiving and emotional well-being.

[00:03:20] Caregiving for ailing parents.

[00:06:22] Caring for aging population.

[00:09:49] Unpaid family caregivers.

[00:14:30] Women over 50's impact.

[00:15:39] Caregiving and health risks.

[00:19:13] Handling the grief of loss.

[00:23:11] Self-care and stress management.

[00:26:28] Bystander guilt and shame.

[00:28:43] Social environments and community.

[00:32:08] Healthcare system and caregiving challenges.

[00:36:13] Reframing uncomfortable caregiving moments.

[00:38:17] Spreading love and wisdom.

Memorable Quotes

"So what it really means is we have to have self-care and we have to have mental breaks and we have to have a capacity to feed our or fill our own cup in order to fill somebody else's." – Betty Murray

"But I face the same challenges that you do, is that it's a struggle. It's a struggle to get self-care in all the time. And ultimately, we need to protect our physical and mental and emotional health. What that really means is that we have to put our own self first, which feels uncomfortable because that's where the shame and the guilt come up." – Betty Murray

Memorable Quotes

"Weight loss and fat loss are two separate things. Weight loss is just a number changing on the scale. You went from 150 to 135. Fat loss is the loss of body fat because five pounds of fat and five pounds of muscle weigh the same, but five pounds of fat takes up a lot more space on the body, so it's more voluminous, it's less dense than muscle." – Betty Murray

"The other thing that I think is really important is we have to look at when you do things hormonally that radically change these hunger hormones like glucagon and ghrelin. What we often see is patterns of eating that are now what we would call disordered." – Betty Murray

Sleep is a fundamental aspect of our lives that often goes overlooked or undervalued. Many people believe that the key to a good night's sleep lies in external solutions, such as melatonin pills, sleep mattresses, or herbal supplements. However, what we fail to realize is that sleep is not a random occurrence; it is a carefully orchestrated process controlled by the laws of physics and influenced by the cues we receive from our environment.

In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Roudy Nassif, a renowned Engineer, Health Entrepreneur, Light Expert, and Founder of VivaRays, where we delved deep into the fascinating world of sleep and energy, discussing practical tips and strategies that can transform your life.

Roudy's knowledge and expertise are truly remarkable. He has a unique ability to simplify complex concepts, making them accessible to everyone, even a three-year-old! We explored the impact of light on our sleep patterns, the importance of blocking artificial light at night, and how these factors can significantly improve our overall well-being.

But that's not all! We also touched on the topic of menopause and women's hormones, diving into the technical aspects while keeping it simple and relatable. If you're experiencing menopause or want to understand it better, this episode is a must-listen.

One of the highlights of our conversation was Roudy's personal journey with his mother. By introducing her to the power of blocking artificial light at night, he witnessed a profound transformation in her life. She regained her sleep, and with it, her energy, drive, and motivation. It's truly inspiring to see how a simple change can have such a profound impact.

We encourage you to tune in to this episode and discover the incredible insights Roudy has to offer. Whether you're struggling with sleep issues, seeking ways to boost your energy levels, or simply curious about optimizing your well-being, you'll find valuable takeaways in this conversation.

Key Takeaways:

[00:00:22] Sleep by design.

[00:06:07] Making a hard left

[00:10:14] Farmers' lifestyle and health.

[00:12:22] Artificial light and well-being.

[00:17:09] Importance of circadian rhythm.

[00:20:00] Protecting the first hour.

[00:25:58] Blue light in nature.

[00:27:18] Blue light and eye health.

[00:34:39] Artificial light at night.

[00:37:20] Boosting productivity with natural light.

[00:41:34] Eliminating obstacles for optimal health.

[00:43:14] Blue light blocking glasses.

[00:49:01] Ethical sourcing and sustainable practices.

[00:51:07] Hormones and sunlight impact.

[00:55:13] Retaining blood for wisdom.

Memorable Quotes

"The quality of the sleep that we get and how rested and energized we feel when we wake up the following morning is controlled by laws of physics. And the main force that control how well we sleep and how rested we feel when we wake up is the circadian force." – Roudy Nassif

"The problem is when we wake up and we blast blue light in our face from the phone or from an LED bulb, the bulb has a spike of blue light at 455 nanometers that is not balanced and proportionate with orange and red light. And this is where blue light becomes inflammatory." – Roudy Nassif

Stress and trauma are often used interchangeably, but they have distinct differences in terms of their effects on the body and mind. Stress is a common phenomenon that most people experience in their daily lives. On the other hand, trauma is a more severe and long-lasting response to a distressing or life-threatening event. Unlike stress, trauma is not a normal response to everyday challenges, and it can have a profound impact on a person's mental and physical well-being.

Today's guest, Dr. Aimie Apigian, a Double Board-Certified Physician in Preventative and Addiction Medicine, brings so much clarity to the table and argues that understanding the distinction between stress and trauma response is crucial for properly addressing and managing these experiences. She sheds light on the aspects of our bodies and minds that often go unnoticed but play a significant role in shaping our lives and helps us distinguish the unconscious forces that drive our actions and feelings, empowering us to gain clarity and control over our experiences.

Dr. Aimie's expertise lies in recognizing and addressing unresolved trauma, both big and small, that may be stored within us. She shares invaluable insights on the three essential ingredients required to heal trauma in our biology, body, and psyche. She doesn't just stop at theory; she provides practical steps to help us navigate the healing process. From understanding the biology of trauma to taking action towards healing, she equips us with the tools necessary to embark on our own personal journeys of growth and transformation.

If you're ready to peel back the layers, uncover your true passions, gain a deeper understanding of yourself, and embark on a transformative journey towards healing and self-discovery, this episode is a must-listen.

As women go through menopause, their bodies undergo significant changes that can impact their health and wellbeing. One of the most important factors during this time is ensuring that they are getting enough protein in their diet. In this episode of the Menopause Mastery, Dr. Amie Hornaman also known as the "thyroid fixer," a functional medicine practitioner who specializes in thyroid and hormone imbalances, joins host Betty Murray to discuss the importance of protein for muscle metabolism, insulin sensitivity, hair health, and energy.

Dr. Hornaman notes that protein is one of the most misunderstood macros in the diet and there are many misconceptions around protein sources and supplementation. Women, in particular, tend to under-eat protein, which can lead to hair loss, muscle loss, a slower metabolism, and a lack of energy. She emphasizes the importance of getting enough high-quality protein from both animal and vegetarian sources, and finding the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats to support insulin sensitivity.

With her unique blend of breathwork, holistic health practices, and transformational coaching, Jen has helped countless people transform their lives for the better.

In this episode of Menopause Mastery, Jen discusses the importance of proper breathing and its impact on overall well-being. She explains that improper breathing can lead to anxiety, stress, and hormonal imbalances. To address these issues, she shares different breathing techniques that can help reduce anxiety, improve sleep, and restore hormonal balance.

Jen encourages individuals to explore various styles of breathwork and find an instructor or coach with whom they resonate. The ultimate goal is to retrain daily habitual breathing patterns, as a majority of people (90%) breathe incorrectly, which directly affects their physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Breathwork is seen as an effective method to release trapped emotions that may contribute to physical imbalances.

Moreover, Jen highlights that breathwork can offer similar benefits to psychedelic therapy without the need for substances. This makes it a suitable option for individuals who may not be interested in psychedelic therapy or are taking medications that are contraindicated for such treatments. Additionally, she mentions that breathwork is a spiritual practice that allows individuals to experience a sense of oneness and love, regardless of their religious beliefs or lack thereof.

I'm here to get my satisfaction, my orgasmic reboot to calm my own nervous system, to feel loved, and cherished and adored and treasured and well satisfied, and that's why we're both here, to co-create that together." Do you need a long-term solution to weight loss? Obesity has become an epidemic, and many women are now using peptide diabetic medications to help them start their weight loss journey. Today on Menopause Mastery, we discuss the efficacy of using diabetic medications as a weight loss remedy with Dr. Amie Hornaman. She is the host of The Thyroid Fixer podcast and founder of the Institute for Thyroid and Hormone Optimization; Dr. Hornaman is the premier authority on balancing hormones and is helping thousands of women reclaim their health. In this episode, she breaks down the positive and negative side effects of drugs like Mounjaro, Metformin, and other peptide-based medications.

Peptides intended for diabetics have the indirect effect of appetite reduction and can slow digestion so that you feel full longer. They have become a popular tool to help women shift their eating habits and quickly lose weight when other diets have failed. However, Dr. Hornaman warns of the unintended consequences when patients use these medications as a crutch without making any lifestyle changes.

If used properly, these medications can potentially have anti-aging effects and help you quickly shift to a healthy weight. The problem is women think they can use these medications for a short time to lose weight fast, but Dr. Hornaman warns that if used this way, you will put on weight as quickly as you lost it.

If you're struggling to maintain a healthy weight, tune in to learn how you can use peptides to bio-hack your weight loss.

Key Takeaways:

  • [3:00] The Real Skinny on Weight Loss Medications
  • [5:20] The Popularity of Mounjaro for Non-Diabetics
  • [12:00] Not a Crutch but a Short-Term Bio-Hack
  • [17:00] The Rebound Hunger
  • [23:00] The Benefits of Glucagon Itself
  • [31:00] Off-Label Uses of Peptides
  • [35:00] The Negative Side Effects
  • [37:00] The Risk of Lean Muscle Loss

Memorable Quotes:

"You cannot use it as a crutch. I see it as a more of a short-term bio-hack that may be able to be utilized in a different way, spaced out, as a kind of a maintenance dose." [12:40] -Dr.Hornaman

"The rebound hunger was like nothing I ever experienced. It was insatiable hunger that came back on, so of course, the concern is; am I going to gain the weight back? if this is truly reducing my appetite." [17:00] -Dr.Hornaman

"If you are going to use this as a true long-term, weight loss, health benefits tool, you have to force the food, specifically the protein, and I don't want to hear the excuse that you're not hungry." [45:35] -Dr. Hornaman

Today on Menopause Mastery, Dr. Kyrin Dunston calls out the irony of modern medicine. She is fellowship trained in metabolic, anti-aging, and functional medicine. As a board-certified OBGYN, Dr. Kyrin was trained to be a leading expert on hormonal health, yet struggled and suffered through hormonal imbalance, obesity, and metabolic issues. The feeling of shame and hopelessness was profound until she discovered functional medicine. This discovery shifted her understanding of the female body. With this program, she lost a staggering one-hundred pounds and achieved the best health of her life.

She discusses the false sense of achievement championed in conventional medicine when doctors manage to conquer a single symptom. Now she takes a holistic approach to balancing hormones and is a pioneer for female hormone justice. Menopause is normal, but Dr. Kyrin speaks to the reality that without preparation, menopause can wreak havoc on your physical and mental health.

Your hormones are the communication center of your body. Without hormonal balance, the body falls into metabolic mayhem. Ovaries are designed for obsolescence, so Dr. Kyrin encourages you to seize the window of opportunity to increase your vitality later in life. Hormonal poverty from menopause has been linked to Alzheimer's and can potentially decrease your life expectancy. Dr. Kyrin helps you piece together your unique protocol for hormonal balance. Menopause is a fact of life, but suffering from hormonal poverty should be an educated choice.

Join us for a crash course in the female body, and learn what you can do to protect yourself today!

Key Takeaways:

  • [3:20] The Illusion of Expertise with Dr. Kyrin

Memorable Quotes:

"No one ever really got better. I would give them the birth control pill, ok that might clear up their period, and I claimed success. Symptoms gone equaled success, that's how medicine views symptoms. It's a problem to be conquered, and when you get rid of the symptom, you claim victory, and you go on about your life." [8:18] -Dr.Dunston

"You need to realize it is the very foundation of how your body functions as a woman, and that you are biologically, physiologically different from men, and that you need special care, nurturing, and attention to function optimally, to have your communication system optimized." [18:15] -Dr.Dunston

Today on Menopause Mastery, we approach health from outside the medical field with Reed Davis, a Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist who changed the paradigm of conventional medicine. He is a Board Certified Holistic Health Practitioner and a Certified Nutritional Therapist. He frequently relies on functional testing to get to the root cause of disease and symptoms, so he is the final destination for clients on their wellness journey.

Reed speaks about his experience entering the holistic space as a non-physician, and how it gifted him the ability to find solutions that doctors were never even aware of. We discuss the restrictions put on conventional doctors and how this new field of holistic medicine is changing health care forever.

Since functional medicine does not rely on quick fixes, Reed confronts the responsibility of his clients to develop discipline in order to make the lifestyle changes necessary for significant results. Conventional medicine has taken power from the individual and made patients dependent on medications and surgical interventions, but Reed reveals that the only way for you to fix your health is to take responsibility for the impact your choices have on your body. Join us for a riveting conversation about the future of medicine!

Key Takeaways:

  • How Reed entered the hormonal health space [2:00]
  • Looking where others aren't looking [9:00]
  • The handcuffs of conventional medicine [12:00]
  • The hope and help paradigm [14:30]
  • The DRESS protocol [19:00]
  • Building Balance and Resilience [21:00]
  • Stepping into teaching [28:00]
  • Who is going to be the boss of your body [34:00]

Memorable Quotes:

"There's lots going on and the minute you get that diagnosis and sort of focusing on the thyroid and medication and trying to take it up and down. The doctors are focused on the test results instead of the person! Like I got to get those just perfect, oh yeah they're perfect, they're right where and it might be that that person has all kinds of stuff going on." [12:20] -Reed Davis

"If you're just going to chase the next potion, powder or pill, or magic bullet, you're probably never going to find it, and you also wouldn't make a very good client, because we want people who can change their behavior by being aware, understanding that sometimes a little discipline and coaching are required. Today on Menopausal Mastery, Dr. Daved Rosensweet joins us to shed light on bioidentical hormone therapy. Dr. Rosensweet graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and pioneered the first nurse practitioner training program in America. He has been practicing since 1971 and has since authored three educational books on hormones and menopause. In this episode, he breaks down the stigma of hormone therapy and shares his preferred treatments, testing, and his menopausal protocol.

When women are ready for hormonal therapy, it is usually at a point of desperation. They want their symptoms alleviated, but we discuss why hormone therapy needs to go beyond feeling comfortable again. Dr. Rosensweet explains why long-term and permanent hormone therapy offers protection for your bones, muscles, and brain function.

For decades women have lived in fear of hormone therapy, but Dr. Rosensweet details why hormonal care is vital to women's longevity and cognitive health. Estrogen is an essential hormone found in the brain, and when your levels decrease, so do your memory and cognitive abilities. You don't have to suffer in your later years! Today Dr. Rosensweet gives you the framework to thrive during and long after menopause.

Key Takeaways:

  • [4:00] Going beyond medical school
  • [6:50] Myths about hormone replacement
  • [14:00] Estrogen matters at any age
  • [20:00] The root cause of all diseases
  • [24:00] When and how to test your hormones
  • [30:00] Beyond alleviating your symptoms
  • [32:00] Estrogen and alzheimers
  • [38:00] Perimenopause and emotional symptoms
  • [40:00] Why you need testosterone
  • [43:00] Hormone delivery mechanisms

Memorable Quotes:

"It takes a certain amount to protect the brain. When does this show up? If you have less than the optimal amount it could take ten, twenty years to show up, but I promise everyone out there that your life is gonna mean as much to you when you're eighty and ninety, as it does right now in this moment, and you don't want to lose cognitive function." [31:09] -Dr.Rosensweet

"Estrogen is best delivered applied to the skin topically. Yes, you can take estrogen in a pill form, but there's increased risks there, and you have to take more estrogen. It provokes coagulation issues." [44:02] -Dr. Rosensweet

Are you struggling to understand the difference between synthetic progestins and bioidentical progesterone? It's hard to find accurate information online because progestins and progestins are incorrectly written interchangeably. Today on Menopause Mastery, I do a deep dive into the recent article from the International Journal of Molecular Sciences: Progesterone: A Steroid with Wide Range of Effects in Physiology as Well as Human Medicine. I help you get through the nerd talk so that you can understand the science behind this miraculous hormone.

We uncover new applications for bioidentical progesterone that could enhance the lives of millions of women. Progesterone protects more than your hormonal health, but has potential applications for concentration, memory, carpal tunnel syndrome, and could help ease anxiety.

Unfortunately, synthetic progestins have been considered interchangeable with pharmaceutical-grade bioidentical progesterone. I break down the negative side effects of these synthetic hormones and teach you why progesterone is the superior treatment. Join me as a guide through this scientific paper and dissect the terminology, so that you can have a deeper understanding of progesterone.

Key Takeaways:

  • [2:20] The mechanisms of progesterone
  • [5:40] Binding protein availability
  • [9:00] The effects of progesterone
  • [14:00] Ati anxiety and pain relief effects from metabolites
  • [17:50] The modulation of Gaba and the MMDA receptor
  • [21:00] Regulation of serotonin and dopamine
  • [23:45] Differences in immune modulation
  • [27:30] The differences in medical administration
  • [31:00] Negative side effects of synthetic progestins
  • [38:00] Progesterone injections to improve carpel tunnel
  • [39:00] Synthetic progestin in your drinking water

Memorable Quotes:"The fluctuation of progesterone affected not only pain but the associated network that binds pain to emotion. So these sex steroids make a significant difference on pain." [13:00]

"The literature about progesterone, ill-informed and poorly written in literature will often use these words interchangeably, and so you have to really look and see if they're talking about natural bioidentical progesterone, progestogens, progestins, all of the last of those are synthetic. Progesterone should only refer to the pharmaceutical qualified bioidentical form." [29:09]

Is your body fighting against you? Today on Menopause Mastery, we discuss health and nutrition with Sara Banta. She is the founder of Accelerated Health Products, a supplement company created out of a need to protect her child diagnosed with Leukemia. After discovering the root cause of her health problems, Sara crafted a new class of supplements. Using these scaler frequency-charged supplements, Sara recovered from hormonal issues, insulin resistance, heavy metal toxicity, and more. In this episode, she gives a crash course in digestive health and how to clear your body's detox pathways.

With so many toxins and radiation in our food and technology, reports of mysterious weight gain, emotional instability, skin irritation, insomnia, and hypothyroidism are increasing, but are continuously misdiagnosed. Conventional doctors are doing the bare minimum to address these burdensome conditions. Sara teaches you how to advocate for your health because your doctor works for you! She equips you with the vocabulary, questions, and medical knowledge to take control of your next consultation.

Sara demonstrates how SSRIs interfere with your thyroid system and reveals that many women are put on these medications unnecessarily. If you are tired of feeling tired and are ready to reclaim your health, tune in and educate yourself on the wonders these supplements can have on your health.

Key Takeaways

  • [4:00] Sara's path to holistic nutrition
  • [7:00] Life changes when your child is sick
  • [11:25] Healing with scaler frequencies
  • [15:00] The link between nutrient deficiencies and depression
  • [19:50] Stress and depression caused by hypothyroidism
  • [22:10] Radiation and toxicity in our environment
  • [24:00] The effect of SSRI medication and thyroid dysfunction
  • [28:00] Clogged sulfur detox pathways
  • [32:00] Eating leptin vegetables

Memorable Quotes:

"A practitioner who essentially peeled my health back like an onion, and he said; Sara, you have zero digestion. I don't know how you walked into my office. You have no thyroid, you have no energy. It is out of pure will and your type A personality that you're getting out of bed and doing what you're doing, and I started crying because finally, someone knew what I was going through." [6:30] -Sara Banta

"We take the supplement and then we encode frequencies to go after those same things, so it's almost like a double whammy when you get the supplement, and it's much more effective, so you need less of the supplement for the healing." [13:16] -Sara Banta

Memorable Quotes:

"What I truly enjoy is sharing my culture. I am from a half and half family. My mom is from Texas, and my dad is from Thailand, so I'm a Thai Texan. I've pretty much lived on both sides of the world, almost equally at this point, and being that person who knows how this side of the globe thinks, and how that side of the globe thinks, and kind of merging that together, and explain it from two points of views is what people truly enjoy." The pharmaceutical industry is at it again! This year's Superbowl aired an advertisement for Astellas' new drug claiming to stop vasomotor symptoms (VMS). Today we welcome back Dr. Aimie Hornaman, to address how the pharmaceutical industry misguides women into treating symptoms while ignoring the root cause.

Every woman goes through menopause. It is an unavoidable fact of life, but you do not need to suffer in silence! Drug companies prey on women who don't know the reality of their hormonal changes. Instead of empowering women with proper hormonal care, doctors are prescribing multiple pills to address the side effects of a natural process. Dr. Hornaman seeks to educate women about their options so that they are no longer gaslighted into taking prescriptions that could have detrimental effects on their health.

Women tend to be afraid of hormonal therapies, because of misinformation cited in the Women Health Initiative Study. We discuss how that study was adulterated by confirmation bias that sought to create fear around hormone therapies. If you want to learn how to ease your menopausal symptoms without harmful drugs, listen now!

Key Takeaways:

  • [2:00] Astellas' Superbowl commercial
  • [5:00] Getting to the root of it
  • [8:00] Gaslighting women's health
  • [10:00] Increasing rates of premature menopause
  • [14:45] Women are taught that menopause is untreatable
  • [17:00] Economic conditions impacting women
  • [19:45] The faulty women's health initiative study
  • [25:00] Using data inappropriately and confirmation bias
  • [29:00] Get tested and know your baseline
  • [35:00] Avoiding the silent suffering

"The researchers were basically going in with a bias. They were going in with the plan to prove that hormones are bad and if you go in with that mindset, and you're not going into a study with an open mindset, of whatever the data says, so if you go in with that preconceived notion that hormones are bad, and this is what we want to find...we tend to find evidence to support our beliefs." Are You Leptin Resistant?

37 min
View

Are you struggling to lose weight and can't stop snacking? You may have developed leptin resistance. Today on Menopause Mastery, I am giving you a crash course in leptin resistance and the chain reaction that follows. Leptin is the hormone that signals that you're full, and once you develop a resistance to it, your brain can no longer receive those signals, which is why you feel insatiable.

Fat cells produce leptin, so if you continuously eat a poor diet and accumulate excess fat, inevitably, your body will generate too much leptin. At that point, the leptin receptors in the hypothalamus can no longer recognize leptin, which leaves you feeling hungry and disrupts your metabolism.

In this episode, you will learn exactly how delicate the symphony of hormones is and why you can't just focus on fixing a single hormone. Once you're at the point of leptin resistance, you undoubtedly have dysregulation of insulin, ghrelin, and glucose because everything works together. I teach you how you can take small steps to reset your hormones and reverse leptin resistance with a healthy lifestyle and a better understanding of your body's delicate balance.

Key Takeaways:

  • [2:00] If you're struggling to lose weight it may be a sign that you are leptin resistant
  • [3:40] Common symptoms of leptin resistance
  • [7:00] How chronic inflammation damages leptin receptors in your brain

  • [7:30] Type 2 diabetes can result from leptin resistance
  • [8:20] Sleep and stress are the biggest lifestyle contributors to hormonal dysregulation
  • [10:50] Leptin resistance contributes to the inability to feel full after eating

The Secrets to Longevity with Dr Rajka

48 min
View

Dr. Rajka Gailbraith is a successful leader in women's health and functional medicine, having trained hundreds of practitioners and delivered babies in both a clinic and hospital. She is passionate about empowering women leaders to optimize their health and performance, and has expertise in longevity, performance, autoimmune disease, and neurogenetics. She runs retreats for women's groups and programs online, and sees patients in her clinic, Simply Health Institute, outside of Chicago. Dr. Rajka is committed to helping women and their families achieve optimal health and performance.

As a child, Dr. Rajka had dreams of becoming a doctor, curing everyone, and having a family. However, she found that she could not cure everyone, and that traditional medical practices often led to misdiagnoses. She experienced fatigue and eventually was diagnosed with Hashimoto thyroiditis. This led her to do a deep dive into functional medicine and functional nutrition, and now she works to help others find underlying causes behind their symptoms, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Listen for the amazing 3D protocol which is an approach to health and wellness that involves diet, digestion, and detox. It is important to approach health in the right order, as one step will feed off the next. Heed and listen to the warnings against juice cleanses for those who have never eaten a healthy day in their life, as it can make them feel worse and turn them off from health and wellness altogether. The 3D protocol is an overall approach to health and wellness which can help individuals improve their health and well-being.

Dr. Galbraith presents the acronym TASK, which stands for Track, Add, Subtract and Keep, as an approach to eating an abundant, nourishing diet. Tracking what you are eating for a couple of weeks helps to bring awareness to what is missing from your diet. After tracking, the next step is to add in any foods that may be missing from the diet. Then, only after tracking and adding, the next step is to subtract any foods that are causing inflammation or other health issues. Finally, the last step is to keep the foods that are benefiting your health and eliminating the ones that are not. Following this approach can help to ensure that you are eating an abundant and nourishing diet.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How do you actually detox someone
  • How your mess and your challenge becomes your message
  • Learn about the Acronym TASK
  • Why you should be cautious about juice cleanse
  • How to really know if you're eating abundantly and correctly for your body type
  • How to use a 3D approach and protocol

TIMESTAMPS

"I love acronyms because then people will remember, and I call it the Task method. So I'm going to put you as a task to eat an abundant nourishing diet. So at the end of the day, regardless of what we do for short term to figure things out, the long term goal is to nourish your body and eat in abundance." (7:50, Rajka)

And she had the misfortune of having to be in hospitalization. And here's a woman who's worked all her life, and I just saw her in that bed, and she just looks so old, and it was so sad. And I'm like, when did it come to this? What if I had only known what I know now? Then can we prevent it? Because her physical body is failing her, and that's where we say her lifespan is not matching her health span right now. (24:16, Rajka)

It's an investment, and you can do it three times a week. And let me give an example. I had a cyclist who wanted to get to a goal of riding 55 miles by his 55th birthday and was finding it hard to ride for more than an hour, hour and a half. And he rode 90 minutes hard doing interval training and said, oh, I felt like I could have gone another half hour. (37:18, RAjka)

Recently, Betty stumbled upon the website of a national organization that promotes women's hormone management. In one video, their male medical director claimed that women's hormones don't need to be tested because they are unpredictable. In his words, looking at the symptoms is enough.

Being in practice for 18 years, these types of views are unfortunately familiar to Betty. But today, she's here to call it out for what it truly is—medical gaslighting.

In this episode, Betty talks about medical gaslighting, what it is, and the ways women are gaslit around their health. Whether a doctor dismisses your symptoms or blames your hormonal problems for a psychological problem, all forms of gaslighting are also a form of abuse. Taking you through this, you'll hear exactly what a healthy doctor-patient partnership should look like.

Betty will also bust the myths about unpredictable hormones and testing. She'll explain what hormones you should test and why you should test rather than just going off of symptoms. By ending the guessing game, you'll jump off the medication roller coaster and treat your hormone problems at their root.

It's time to take a stand and do your part to end medical gaslighting today.

Key Topics/Takeaways:

  • What gaslighting is and who it happens to.
  • How the medical field abuses women.
  • Ways women are gaslit around their hormones.
  • Why hormone testing is essential.
  • Which hormones you should really test for.
  • What to do if you're being medically gaslit.

Memorable Quotes:

"The most common drug that is now prescribed for hormone changes in menopause is an antidepressant. It is not a psychological problem, it is a hormonal problem." (4:56, Betty)

"So yes, our hormones are all over the place. But you know what? They also are predictable." (9:07, Betty)

"We should test and see where somebody's hormones are at because you could have all kinds of symptoms that can cross these hormonal boundaries. And instead of guessing and putting people through sort of a medical prescriptive rollercoaster ride, you could get much more targeted and much more specific about what somebody needs, and you can actually correct for the things that are wrong." (13:16, Betty)

"What gets measured gets fixed, what gets measured gets done." (15:59, Betty)

"It takes on average 17 years for whatever's in the research to make it into clinical practice and medical schools. And I quote, won't teach it until it's considered standard of care in the general medical community, which means the medical schools are the ones that are the furthest behind." (19:18, Betty)

She'll go further into the symptoms of high cortisol and explain why the body might create too much. Then, she'll give you easy steps to reduce the cortisol levels in your body.

In today's fast-paced world, stress might be inevitable. But there are actions you can take to regularly lower your cortisol levels and finally achieve your weight loss goals!

Key Topics/Takeaways:

  • Why cortisol can lead to weight gain and insulin resistance.
  • What creates too much cortisol in the body.
  • Cortisol's role in gluconeogenesis.
  • The connection between cortisol and the thyroid.
  • Cortisol and estrogen dominance.
  • How to reduce cortisol.

Memorable Quotes:

"When the body's under stress, it produces more cortisol, which can stimulate the release of another hormone called ghrelin. And ghrelin increases hunger and cravings. So this can often lead to overeating and weight gain, especially if the diet is not a healthy diet." (3:18, Betty)

"Cortisol also contributes to estrogen dominance by increasing estrogen production and inhibiting the metabolism of estrogen in the liver." (22:20, Betty)

"You can't get up in the morning, chug six cups of coffee, skip lunch, and then have dinner, but run with your hair on fire every day and get the same benefit. So we have to do thoughtful fasting. We have to do thoughtful food composition. (25:25, Betty)

Are you doing all the right things but still getting all the wrong results?

If your low-carb, high-protein, or ketogenic diet isn't fixing your insulin resistance and you haven't been achieving your weight loss goals, the polyol pathway might be the culprit.

In this solo episode, Betty talks all about the polyol pathway—a process in the body that helps break down sugars. She explains what happens biologically when we eat too much sugar and have an excess of glucose and how triggering the polyol pathway can negatively impact our health.

After walking you through the various ways the polyol pathway can be triggered, Betty will give you a handful of easy ways to regulate the polyol pathway and avoid activating it.

This episode might be the secret ingredient you need to finally hit your health goals.

Key Topics/Takeaways:

  • What the polyol pathway is and how it works.
  • Impacts of too much glucose in the body.
  • How the polyol pathway is related to dehydration and salt intake.
  • The role of estrogen in regulating the polyol pathway.
  • Oxidative stress.
  • The interaction between fructose and the fat switch.
  • The mitochondrial function at the cell.
  • What triggers the polyol pathway.

Memorable Quotes:

"When there's too much sorbitol and fructose being produced and not enough being used, it's gonna cause a problem." (2:48, Betty)

"It's really important to be mindful of hydration. You have got to make sure that you're hydrated appropriately, particularly before eating." (5:47, Betty)

"The interesting thing is fructose doesn't create satiety. So satiety is that sensation in which you feel like you've eaten and you've gotten calories and you're satisfied. Fructose does not do that, and particularly high fructose corn syrup, which leads to more eating, more desire for sugar, just more food." (12:44, Betty)

"Part of the process is to correct this polyol pathway mechanism to make sure that the cells can do what they need to do so we can become more metabolically flexible, so our body can actually burn that fat appropriately, even before we are in menopause." (23:26, Betty)

"If you're eating enough fiber, you should have enough stool throughout the day to fill a Kleenex box." (12:33, Betty)

"Your digestion and your microbiome and your poop can really tell you what's really happening with your hormones and there is impact there." (24:16, Betty)

This week, Betty spoke with Juliette Karaman, founder of Feel Fully You. She helps women reconnect with themselves and with their partners. Intimacy is founded on good communication but so many women are not equipped with the vocabulary to express their desires, if they even know them at all. With intentional curiosity, Juliette teaches you how to get to know yourself again and carry those skills into your relationship, because most divorces are rooted in bad communication patterns. As you learn what feels good in your body and learn how to tell that to your partner, they then can give it to you! Sometimes, it is that simple. It's easy to complain and pick apart yourself and your partner but if you learn to devote your attention to the abundance in your life, you can rekindle the passion in your life.

Key Takeaways:

[3:10] Hitting rock bottom: When you have no choice but to change your mentality

[4:30] Why you should take the time to nurture yourself

[5:30] How you show up communicates to yourself and to others what you are willing to accept

[7:50] Caring for more than just what you present to the outside world

[9:00] Addressing your perception before you change your circumstances

[11:00] You are usually unaware of your own mental and emotional blocks

[12:00] Getting in tune with yourself is the first step to effective communication

[13:00] Leaning into the abundance of your life

[15:20] Disrupting the pattern you're stuck in and rebuild communication

[18:30] Never lose curiosity about your partner

[20:00] Developing the vocabulary to precisely communicate what feels good to you

[24:00] Discovering your way into pleasure

[26:30] It's ok to be high maintenance because it sets you up for success

[29:30] Finding beauty in your own body!

[34:00] When you begin focusing on yourself your relationships always improve
