The Magnolia State has a long, historic tradition with black bears, dating back to when the Delta region was still massive old growth timber and full of bears! Then of course there is the infamous Theodore Roosevelt hunt that led to the creation of the Teddy Bear. We’ll look to the past, discuss the present and then look to the future in our conversation. It ends up being an interesting look at an often maligned animal that’s making a comeback against the odds and a chance to hear from the people that are dedicated to see it be successful. This week we have a very interesting discussion with author Erika Howsare, whose recent book, The Age of Deer, The Trouble and Kinship with Our Wild Neighbors recently caught our attention. It’s a fascinating look at the white-tailed deer and its relationship with man over time. She explains, “deer have been an essential part of human life for millennia and today our relationship is still intimate, yet full of contradictions:  we hunt and protect them, we cull them in suburbs while mythologizing them as icons of the wilderness.”  Erika didn’t grow up hunting and readily admits she was ambivalent about the whole process. However, through her research on deer and an open mind, she develops a very deep introspective into hunting, hunters, and our view of the world.  If you’re a hunter, especially a deer hunter, you need to listen to what she has to say. Anybody that turkey hunts in Mississippi owes him a debt of gratitude, you see Mr. Herring was one of the first team of biologists that trapped and relocated wild turkeys across the state. During the late 1960’s through the early 80’s he was involved in over 90 cannon net captures and releases. His stories are fantastic and transport the listener back into time when there weren’t many turkeys or turkey hunters. The story of this small group of men, learning and perfecting their craft is one every turkey hunter needs to here. Admittedly wild pigs can be fun to hunt, but they can destroy habitat and cause more damage to the ecosystem than can be quantified with dollars. We learn about how the pigs got here and how they were being moved around the landscape in the dark of the night. We discuss the different stances that states have and what seems to be working, along with what steps need to be taken to make sure they are safe table fare. Finally, the guys explain what they are best at; trapping pigs. They explain using high-tech “drop” traps, to simple wire panel pens with electric gates, to using a thermal scope and a good old fashioned late evening hunt to get that last pig.  We officially declare war on the wild pig. We learn about how the pigs got here and how they were being moved around the landscape in the dark of the night. We discuss the different stances that states have and what seems to be working, along with what steps need to be taken to make sure they are safe table fare. Finally, the guys explain what they are best at; trapping pigs. They explain using high-tech “drop” traps, to simple wire panel pens with electric gates, to using a thermal scope and a good old fashioned late evening hunt to get that last pig.  We officially declare war on the wild pig. This week we really enjoyed the discussion with our in studio guests, Caroline Winters and William McKinley. Caroline recently graduated from Mississippi State and is working for the MS Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks (MDWFP), and William is the MDWFP Deer Program Coordinator for the whole state of Mississippi. Caroline recently killed a giant 190 inch typical, one that she and others had been watching and passing for at least three years.  The story of Caroline and her husband and father, finding sheds, watching and passing the deer is a great one and illustrates the point of “let ‘em grow.” William helps explain the several curiosities about the buck, including that he should have died from a previous brain abscess, and goes on to help us better understand what it takes to grow a deer of this caliber. We ask a lot of questions and learn a lot about doe management, buck fawn displacement and why this year it seems more giants are hitting the ground.  Did you know that the first biologists that went around telling clubs to shoot does had to have armed escorts?
