Gamekeeper Podcast

This week the Gamekeeper crew enjoys a lively discussion of the Rio Grande subspecies of the wild turkey. Dr. Dwayne Elmore of Oklahoma State University explains habitat, roosting habits, and overall behavior of the lusty, frequently gobbling bird that we all love to chase. We learn why their gobble sounds different and a theory on why they can be hard to kill right off the roost.  Lots of turkey obsessed hunters chase Rios every year and if you don’t, you should consider it. This week Dr. Marcus Lashley aka Dr. Disturbance of the University of Florida Deer Lab joins us to talk turkeys. We consider Marcus a homeboy and love talking with him whenever we get a chance. It doesn’t take long for the conversation to morph into a discussion of the Osceola subspecies of the wild turkey. Rich with legend and lore, the Osceola is a remarkable bird that resides in some beautiful and unique habitat. We touch on a lot of information that any turkey hunter will find interesting. This week we are honored to have Dr. Dana Morin, an Applied Population Ecologist with the Carnivore and Population Ecology Lab at the Forest and Wildlife Research Center at Mississippi State, sitting between the turkeys and explaining many facts about coyotes. We learn they are a fascinating animal, very much deserving of our respect even though we still seem to want to trap or shoot each one we see. They weren’t always in the Eastern half of the U.S., yet have you ever wondered how they got here? Why do they howl? Just how smart are they? If you trap one how long does it take another to fill the void? How large are their territories?  Her vast amount of research into their habits and habitat allow her to provide us some serious insight. We learn it all and more. Listen, Learn and Enjoy!

This week on the GameKeeper Podcast we’re excited to have finally had Kyle Lybarger and Jake Brown from The Native Habitat Project in the studio – where we covered as many bases as we could on native and non-native flora, wildlife habitat, burning, savannahs and other ecosystems, and more. This week we get serious and hear a duck hunting story that came awfully close to having a bad ending. Like many of us want to do, Jason Cook found himself duck hunting during a major freeze up. When his dog fell through the ice on a long retrieve and couldn’t get out…like all of us would, he started to his dog in attempt to save him. It's a perilous situation and when Jason falls through the ice himself and can’t touch bottom, it gets even worse. We recorded this podcast hoping to remind duck hunters how dangerous things can get and what to do in case you find yourself in a bad situation.

This week we discuss the art of calling coyotes. Expert caller Jon Collins of FOXPRO joins us to explain the many calls and techniques he has learned through years of chasing the crafty critters. Ole Wiley is found in every area of the country, and as Gamekeepers we worry about our fawns and turkeys.  We all knew they are formidable predators, but we learn they're susceptible to calling year round and it takes skill to regularly kill them. This week we welcome Jessica Crawford, an incredibly knowledgeable Archaeologist hailing from The Archaeological Conservancy, to discuss all things related to our Native American cultures spanning from thousands of years ago to present day. What type of tools did they use and how did they make them? What site types did they inhabit? Did they practice any type of gamekeeping similar to how we do it today? Where do I look for artifacts, and what is ethical and/or legal means of doing so, and how do I properly document them? What do I do if I find a “site” or “mound” on my property? We also shared a couple of stories about the dark side of artifact collecting. For this week’s episode, Dr. Mike Brasher, senior waterfowl scientist at Ducks Unlimited, gives an update on the avian flu that’s currently affecting waterfowl.  We want to understand what it is, how it spreads, the risk to humans and of course our dogs.  While we learn the overall risk to dogs and humans remains low, experts are highlighting areas of potential concern and advising on steps that hunters can take to further reduce their exposure and risk. This week we humbly apologize to the squirrel. Across the whitetail’s range, our collective love of deer and deer hunting has made many of us forget about what once was a very strong hunting tradition. We don’t want to spook our deer, so we’ve backed away from roaming the woods in pursuit of bushy tails. Squirrels are a challenging target, live in beautiful hardwood habitats and can be fantastic table fare. This week we have three uniformed Mississippi game wardens in the studio, reminding us to be safe this hunting season with stories of other hunters who weren’t. This week we have a lot of fun with our guest Gerald Swindle. He’s a well celebrated professional bass fisherman, but is also a rabid Gamekeeper who intensively manages properties in multiple states. We discussed improving the hunting, habitat and value of his properties in between his funny comments. This week our hometown hero and brilliant biologist, Dr. Bronson Strickland, joins us once again where we discuss forage plantings for our favorite cervid, the white-tailed deer. We ask a lot of questions including what we need to be planting, vs. what we want to plant. Bronson also brought a list of trivia-style deer related questions to ask us, which was loads of fun. One question about how many calories a lactating doe needs per day really shocked us! At the end we have a hair-raising discussion with an avid hunter and shed-hunter, named Laurian, who was recently stalked and attacked by a mountain lion for over a half mile out in Utah. This week food plot expert Kenny Thompson joins us in the guest chair to share his knowledge. Kenny has had a plot planting business for the last twenty years and has planted over 14,000 acres of wildlife plots – and currently averages over 700 acres installed a year. Kenny tells us what he has learned and ways to improve the planting and managing process. Specializing in perennial clovers, Kenny’s fields regularly last over ten long years before needing to be re-planted. He and his clients have grown and killed numerous record book animals. This week we dive deep into learning about an obscure native chestnut relative that is highly preferred by wildlife, and the grass roots organization we believe will bring it back to its former glory. Our brilliant guest, AJ Hendershott, with the Ozark Chinquapin Foundation, really schooled us on everything to know about the Ozark Chinquapin (Castanea ozarkensis) and what they are doing to get them back to a sustainable level. This week we learn from Ian Bartoszek, a biologist with The Conservancy of SW Florida, where he describes the recent capture of an 18 foot, 217 pound Burmese python in the Florida Everglades and more.  Ian and his staff have dedicated their lives to protecting the Everglades from this invasive species, and so far have removed an astonishing 26,000 pounds of these snakes. The stories are crazy! Later, retired Mississippi biologist Jim Lipe, tells the random story of how he was bitten by a cottonmouth, causing his arm to swell to the size of his leg.  Cuz joins us, and stands in his chair for most of the recording. This week on the Gamekeepers podcast we welcome one of our favorite guests, Dr. Marcus Lashley (@DrDisturbance), from the University of Florida. We begin by discussing summer scouting for desirable plant species, while many are blooming and easier to identify PLUS how to gauge them as indicator species. We also give a tip on an app or two that can help a Gamekeeper ID them. The presence of these plants or lack thereof can be important information to a Gamekeeper. Marcus also explains a recent study on “oak masting,” and how this information can help improve your hunting. It’s commonly thought that many trees of the same species synchronize and drop their mast/acorns at the same time, but the study shows some interesting insights.  It’s the 100th episode, but the guys don’t reminisce much and get right to the subject matter. This week on the podcast we dive deep into more efficient methods of establishing plantings for wildlife, without having to till the soil. Methods such as Throw-and-Mow and Frost or Snow Seeding are increasing in popularity because it’s easy, cheaper, better for soil health and ultimately the critters. The use of implements such as roller-crimpers are explained as a way of cutting back on herbicide use and improving growing conditions.
