Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye is the most famous Narayani Shloka. Om Sarva Mangala Mangalye is a mantra of benevolence: the Divine Mother, who is in all beings, is asked to bring about good for all.

“Sarva Mangala Mangalye” actually belongs to the Devi Mahatmyam, it is a mantra from the eleventh chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam, tenth verse. This eleventh chapter is also called the Narayani Stotra because there are many mantras that end with ‘Narayani Namostute’. And one of them and the best known is this “Sarva Mangala Mangalye”.

Mangala means blessing, happiness, all good fortune. And charana also means wish. And so this is a blessing mantra, it is an intercession mantra, it is a mantra of good will.

Sadbhuja Dasa sings the Maha Mantra during a Saturday evening Satsang at Yoga Vidya in Bad Meinberg.

Sadbhuja Dasa has been living in the Bhakti tradition for 24 years, has spent 15 years as a monk in the holy places of India and has spent a lot of time with sadhus. His kirtans and stories touch you deeply in your heart and you get a feeling for the depth of Vedic culture.

This mantra has sixteen different words, which is why it is also known as the Sixteen Mantra. It is also the mantra that addresses Hari, Rama and Krishna. Hari is of course Vishnu, Hari means “yellow”, Hari is a synonym for “radiant”, “the one who attracts the hearts of all”. Rama is “the one who is full of joy”, Krishna is “the black one”, “the dark one” and therefore “the mysterious one”. And so “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” is the aspect that connects all three Vishnu aspects, Rama, Krishna and Hari:

And “Jaya Jaya - reverence again and again”. Ki is the genetic noun that can be attached to a Hindi word. So this song is also a Hindi song, which is a mixture between Sanskrit and modern Hindi.

This divine mother is Mata, precisely Mother. She is Kali, Kali is the dark goddess, literally "the black one," the one who manifests mysteriously, also takes away all attachments, who is also the dance of the universe. This divine mother, Mata, is Durga. And Durga is the Goddess who is riding on a tiger or riding on a lion, who has raised her hand in gesture of blessing and who gives one confidence and protection, the Goddess of Protection. "Radhe Radhe Govinda Govinda Radhe" is a kirtan for the worship of Krishna and Radha, it sings of the divine couple. Radha is the feminine aspect, Govinda is the masculine aspect. Radha means "love" and "joy", Govinda is the good shepherd. And so this mantra invokes the divine couple, as protection and as love. In this way, we can fully connect with the Divine, as protection and as love. Radha and Govinda together stand for the Divine everywhere. We can experience God as love, we can let our heart speak, we can experience God with joy. And we can be sure that God cares about us, that only what is supposed to happen happens. The kirtan was written for the mountain "Arunachala" in South India. It is said that Shiva lives there. On the full moon of each month, thousands of Indian and Western pilgrims circumambulate Arunachala on foot.
Symbolically, Arunachala stands for the warming sunbeams of dawn, which he brings into our closed hearts.
So with this kirtan we can connect completely with Shiva. Shiva as a universal force in the universe, as our own true nature.

The kirtan helps you to surrender to the Divine and to life itself - just as Hanuman surrendered to Rama in complete trust. Hanuman was the servant of Rama and Sita. Sita was the wife of Rama and they both are considered as an ideal couple. Rama does not exist without Sita and Sita does not exist without Rama, so they often speak or sing of "Sitaram". They lead us to unconditional love. Jaya means "long live" and so we can translate Jay Hanuman and Jay Sitaram as "long live Hanuman - long live Sitaram".

The goddess Saraswati symbolises intuition, wisdom, supreme knowledge and the arts. Saraswati symbolises creativity, artistic and other abilities. She also symbolises the human ability to think and discern. The word ‘Saraswati’ means the one who gives the essence (sara) of one's self (swa), also the flowing one. Saraswati stands for the ever-flowing stream of divine grace.

The Devi mantra helps to eliminate negativity and gain new inspiration.

Devi is the creator of the universe, she is the universal mother. Different aspects of her are honoured with this mantra: first the destructive aspect (Kali and Durga) is worshipped to eradicate the bad tendencies in our mind. Then the creative aspect (Lakshmi) is worshipped to sow divine and spiritually beneficial qualities in us. Finally, the knowledge aspect (Sarasvati) is worshipped so that we can attain the highest wisdom.
