Table Read

LOVE & DARKNESS is a multi-generational saga tracking the triumphs and tragedies of a large, powerful Hungarian Jewish family during WWII. Based on an incredible true story, this project will be adapted as an action-packed historical podcast. LOVE & DARKNESS explores themes of discrimination, anti-Semitism and hope that remain relevant in today’s world. With these timely issues in mind, we will be partnering with a to-be-announced philanthropic organization that we will be supporting through this podcast.

Summary:
Avrum Katz (47) is a Rabbi and the patriarch of a large family in 1941 Hungary. Hungary is an ally of Nazi Germany and has been implementing increasingly strict anti-Jewish laws.

Avrum’s family owns a farm and butcher shop in a small town. His son, Dov (22), brings a Christian woman, Inga (22), to the bris of Avrum’s first grandchild. Captain Tibor (30s), a Christian army captain, sees Inga at the celebration. He becomes enraged when he learns that Inga loves Dov and not him.

In retaliation, Tibor has the Katz’s butchershop shut down, cutting off the family’s livelihood. Dov is infuriated and beats up Captain Tibor. Avrum and his son Isaac (24) travel to Budapest to meet with Moshe (70), Avrum’s estranged father and a powerful businessman, to ask if he can get the shop’s license reinstated. While there, Avrum and Moshe are unjustly arrested by the police for “inciting rebellion.” It’s clear that Captain Tibor is responsible.

As payback, Dov, Isaac, their brother Wolf (23), and Uncle Yehuda (43) murder Gyorgy (40s), an anti-Semitic neighbor who reported the Katz family to Captain Tibor. Captain Tibor slays the family’s cattle as revenge. It's then shockingly revealed that Captain Tibor is secretly Jewish.

In the final scenes, Avrum and Moshe are at the forefront of the Hungarian and Nazi’s battle against Russia. They have been forced into the Hungarian army’s Forced Labor Battalion. Moshe offers to walk in front of Avrum so Avrum can say a prayer before the men are forced to cross a minefield. Moshe is then killed by an exploding mine in front of his son. When it’s Avrum’s turn, he miraculously makes it to the other side and becomes determined to escape.

ACT 4: McDonnell finally connects the dots. His mother was frantic to reach him for a very good reason. And she somehow called the Institute at their Top Secret unlisted phone number, which she had no way of knowing. But guess who did know that number? That guy with the accent.

Meanwhile, Nurse Fields makes a secret purchase for McDonnell’s future exploits. To keep him safe, or to advance her own agenda? McDonnell is starting to realize that there is a LOT more going on behind that pretty face. She has more than a few secrets.

McDonnell goes on a Gateway journey to search for the missing scientist, before his great skills are turned against the good guys. He finds a mysterious glowing entity wandering the halls of his mother’s facility. He isn’t sure who it is, until the entity talks. Can’t miss that voice.

Monroe is thrilled with the discovery, but the question remains. Where is Bentov? McDonnell has only connected in the Gateway realm, not in physical reality. Being new to this, McDonnell is still trying to connect reality to the Gateway realm. They have to find where Bentov’s physical being is so Addis can rush troops in to swoop him up.

Trying to find some new angle, Nurse Fields mentions Dr. Alexander. Monroe laughs and throws cold water on any help from the mystery doctor. But then a call comes in, from someone who hasn’t been in the physical world in decades. An intriguing message from another time. And a new place to look for Bentov. All this and more in Episode 4. ACT 3: As a reward for finding the Russian Missile Base, Monroe has brought Itzhak Bentov out of hiding and into the Monroe Institute. He’s there to get McDonnell back through time to 1944 in France. Bentov’s special tape and expertise have really paid off getting McDonnell to a higher Focus Level. But in a surprise twist, McDonnell isn’t immune to the laws of physics there. 

When General Addis finds out about Bentov’s visit he brings a quick end to things. Before McDonnell reaches his goal, but not before a piece of shrapnel wings him. The furious General whisks Bentov and his decoys off to various bases. He clips Monroe’s wings and Gateway progress is back to Square One. Then someone kidnaps Bentov. The General sees serious trouble ahead, and unleashes Monroe and McDonnell to do whatever it takes to find and rescue Bentov. Now with no limits, get ready for danger and excitement at the Gateway.

This right before he goes to visit his mother in an elder care facility. Mom thanks him for his visit the previous week, but it’s been months since he made the trip. And yet somehow, she knows things she couldn’t possibly know.

Back at the Institute the following week, Monroe offers McDonnell extra help searching for the truth about his father. But Monroe needs something in return. Extra risks for extra rewards? McDonnell finally gets info on that Russian base, but at great cost. And he meets some friends, new and old. One named Bentov, carefully smuggled there. Everything builds to a crescendo and McDonnell ends up dodging a German MG-42 machine gun on a beach. Not just watching, but actually there. At the meeting point, Doug saves a toddler from getting hit by a train, but misses the rendezvous and his last hope. Ethan and Francine find Doug. He'll always be family; families stick together. The next day at the school play, fifth grade bullies sabotage the performance. Julia is in tears. Doug makes a heart-felt speech about her kindness and belief in her students. He saves the day and transforms back into a grown up! Over the next 8 months, he gets his act together and becomes a responsible adult. Doug is asked to be the godfather to Ethan and Priya's son.
