The Goal Digger Podcast | Top Business and Marketing Podcast for Creatives, Entrepreneurs, and Women in Business

en us
You didn’t start your business to be a full-time content creator. You started it to help people, earn consistent income, and finally have the freedom you dreamed of. The Goal Digger Podcast is your go-to show for clear marketing strategies, proven systems, and honest conversations that help you grow your business in a way that feels good and actually works. Hosted by Jenna Kutcher, New York Times bestselling author of How Are You, Really? and the self-made entrepreneur behind a seven-figure brand, this podcast is where you come to stop winging it and start making real progress. If you have ever asked yourself how do I grow my business online without burning out, what do I even post on social media that truly connects with people, can Pinterest or podcasting really grow my audience while I sleep, how do I build an email list from scratch without the tech headaches, is it actually possible to make money with a small audience, what should I offer and how do I launch it without second-guessing everything, or am I too late to start over or scale up, this show is your answer. Every episode blends practical, proven strategies with the mindset shifts you need to break through imposter syndrome, release overwhelm, and clarify your next steps. Past guests include powerhouse names like Amy Porterfield, Mel Robbins, Marie Forleo, Ed Mylett, and Jasmine Star. With over 110 million downloads, The Goal Digger Podcast has helped thousands of women get strategic with their time, grow brands that feel aligned and profitable, launch offers with confidence, create content that works even while they rest, and replace running on empty with systems that actually support their life. Sophia Amoruso started her business on ebay and it turned into the massive fashion name of NastyGal. Her story transitioned from a 22-year old millionaire to a very public journey through incredible business challenges… And that was just the beginning of the wild journey of business and life this GirlBoss has continued to ride, straight into the fine-tuned version of success she’s creating for herself and others today.

I’m so thrilled for an opportunity to have a candid conversation with Sophia about business highs and lows, of creating a company that aligns with what you actually want, and taking everything she’s learned -- from public success to missteps -- and turning it into valuable teachings for others.

Over the years, I have been able to shift my money mindset in a positive way, and it’s transformed so many aspects of my life. I feel like I’ve finally learned to trust myself, think strategically about my money, and live in a more abundant mindset.

This episode isn’t created to fix the bigger problems created by broken systems, systems that I am committed to helping change, but I do hope that it helps for you to look at money through a different lens that invites more freedom or understanding in your life and for the role money plays in it.

Glo Atanmo started The Blog Abroad to document her journey as a solo female traveler, and through it all she’s become an incredible educator on more than just the topic of travel. She lifts the weight off heavy topics and answers the questions we’re quietly asking from the other side of our phone screens, all within the powerful squares of the @glographics Instagram feed.

I’m so excited to learn about her entrepreneurial journey, her travels abroad, the transition she’s navigating in her business and life, and one hot topic that I’m eager to hash out with her -- is a business built on passion actually sustainable?

All of my siblings and I are entrepreneurs in some form, and yet we didn’t have any direct influence in this area growing up. My sister runs a thriving blog and Instagram platform in her perfectly-Kate niche, I’ve got my business that you know fairly well by now, and then there’s Joe who built an incredible advertising agency to help small businesses sell their products on Amazon. He also travels the country in an RV with his wife and three children — don’t worry, we’ve got a story around that that you’ll get to hear too!

It’s such a treat to get to introduce you to my brother on the show. Meet the guy who shared the fire engine bunk beds with me and a human who shares a lot of the same memories I have!

Are you a troublemaker? Do you embrace fear and move forward in spite of it? Does breaking the rules and carving your own path invigorate you… Or is that the last thing you want to do? Okay, what about this one -- Do you truly know yourself? Do you stand in your full self, taking up the space you earned simply by being born?

Luvvie Ajayi Jones was once afraid to call herself a writer because she was afraid of the title. She nearly skipped out on doing a TED talk that changed her life because of imposter syndrome. Now, she’s a best-settling author and she’s claimed the title “Professional Troublemaker” as she leads people to continue and achieve their audacious dreams in the face of fear.

I remember sitting across the table from Dre Thomas at a hotel in Brooklyn when she told me about her work with young girls and teens, how she’s dedicated to helping them grow in their confidence and celebrate their girlhood and womanhood, all while providing the very real need of hygiene products in under-resourced communities.

In 2020, Dre Thomas had to take her Smile On Me events virtual, like so many others. She knew that the need for connection last year was greater than ever, and she wasn’t about to let her community down. Dre Thomas is here to share her community-nurturing expertise, and talk about all of the exciting ways she’s rethinking events after a year gone virtual.

Are you planning to hire an employee this year? Your first teammate? A virtual assistant to lighten your load for the first time ever? Finding and hiring the right person to take over a piece of your business is a challenging process -- it’s scary to put what you’ve built in the hands of someone else.

Kathie Lee Gifford had a 45 year career in television and film as a playwright, producer, singer, songwriter and actress, and you might know her best from her days alongside Regis Philbin on Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee, as well as co-host of the fourth hour of The Today Show with Hoda Kotb.

Now, she’s quote “retired” and I say that with quotes because though she may not be on television where we’re used to seeing her, Kathie Lee is just getting started with her new dreams and goals as an author and a voice for women on the precipice of their own life changes. Empty-nest years, divorce, the death of a loved-one, or a professional crisis or career pivot, Kathie Lee is here to talk about that universal search for meaning through any major life change.

If you’re ready to harness the power for what I forecast as the top methods to drive results on Instagram in the new year, stick with me. It’s not as hard as we’d like to sometimes make it.

As we all roll into 2021, there’s not a better time to reevaluate your Instagram strategy and find ways to level up for the new year. It’s a brand new year, and for most of us that means new goals, new ideas, and new strategies for building our businesses and killing it online. Also, if you’re anything like me, the first of the year also brings about tons of reflection when it comes to your business, an inventory of sorts of what’s working, where you’re getting stuck, and a plan of what you hope to build and create.

If you’re ready to seriously rock Instagram this year, let’s dive on in.

Artists, makers, musicians, designers, photographers, anyone who turns their art into a business, this one's for you. When you decide to turn your art into a business, you open yourself up to so much opportunity, as well as a whole host of challenges. Critique and criticism become part of your daily routine, because it’s that critique that makes customers happy with an end product. And I can remember from my photography days, that a lot less of your time is dedicated to actually creating, and way more is spent on the nuts and bolts of running a business.

Someone whose artistic talent, as well as her business sense, I admire so much is Sheila Chen. I’m so excited to hear all about Sheila’s journey into the creative entrepreneur space, what she’s learned about navigating the space, how she markets her craft, and the lessons in boundaries that keep her business a fulfilling endeavor.

I want to share from my heart some of the things I’m working on and going through, even though I don’t have the answers or know the end result yet. It’s the idea of showing up in the middle of the process, not just when you have the shiny after photo to go alongside the before.

I admire SO much when other leaders and people I look up to can honestly show up and let you into the process, so that’s really what today’s all about. Here are some of the challenges from 2020 that I’ve been ruminating over thoughtfully as we transition into a new year and continue to adjust, pivot, learn and grow into more resilient and kind humans… or at least, that’s the goal.

Where does visualization fit into how to plan and goal set for the future? What about manifestation -- is that a tool in your kit for going after what you want? Before you cast off manifestation and visualization as too “woo-woo”, I want you to meet Dr. Tara Swart. She is a neuroscientist, a medical doctor, and so much more, and her work is anchored in researching the science behind manifestation.

Dr. Swart is going to share that research with us and the proven methods for visualizing and manifesting the life and business you want. This is more than making a vision board on Pinterest with your dream house, this is a tactical lesson in manifestation and visualization, backed by neuroscience.

If you know me, you know I’m not a huge “resolutions” person per se, but I do see the tangible value in reviewing what went down over the past year and seeing what can shift to make the next one even better and I love setting goals and vision casting for what’s coming up. More than just lines on a page, I want to really have a compelling vision of what I hope the year will hold that I can cling to when life hits the fan.

I’ve spent a lot of time these past few months being quiet and still with myself, almost going internal in order to look not only at my habits and work processes, but also my belief systems, core values, and how I’m showing up in the world. This year, I’ll be approaching goal setting a bit differently. Ready for it? Let’s dive in!

Passive income is one of those things I could talk about for days on end because becoming a mom really reminded me why I decided to build my own business as an entrepreneur. I simply do not want to be on someone else’s clock, in someone else’s office, trading what could be precious family time for a predetermined amount of income. Creating passive income streams was the first real eye opener that showed me I don’t have to trade time for money.

Abby Harriman is a long-time student of mine, and she’s ready to create passive income streams that allow her to scale without losing time with her family. In this coaching session, I’m tackling her questions on value ladders, low priced offers, strategies for automation and outsourcing, and low budget ways to get the help you need in your business when you’re just getting started.

We’ve all heard of an IQ test -- the evaluation of our intelligence quotient. But what about EQ? We can learn a lot from evaluating our emotional intelligence. My whole team recently started working with the incredible Tieko Nejon, an expert in the emotional intelligence space.

Part of her work with our team was administering an Emotional Intelligence assessment with a series of questions that return a score, or EQ. The full report is a bulky document with a breakdown of all the different ways to understand your own personal emotional intelligence, and ways to strengthen those skills. In this episode with Tieko, she’s actually going to dig into MY EQ report and really put me in a vulnerable place. My goal for you is to hear how to analyze your own emotional intelligence, through putting myself in the scary spotlight.

Let’s talk websites. There’s more to a great website than aesthetics. Bottom line, the user friendliness and user experience of your website is what will lead to conversions for your prospects.

If your website doesn’t make that initial impact or lacks clear messaging, if people can’t figure out how to work with or buy from you, or if there’s just too much going on, that’s potential for major lost sales and that’s exactly what I want for you to avoid. Let’s talk about what your website REALLY needs in order to take visitors from semi-interested skimmers to full-blown, obsessed and paying clients (or customers).

The opportunity to monetize your platforms and work with your dream brands can be a game-changing career shift. When Mattie James reached out to share what she’s been working on as an influencer educator, I jumped at the chance to host this conversation.

Mattie James started her lifestyle blog as a passion project in 2010 and she’s since grown it into a multiple six-figure business, partnering with brands to create sponsored content that still feels on-brand and authentic. With all of that success, Mattie now teaches other people how to create profitable influencer businesses and pitch brands with confidence.

Mattie is tuned into all the trends and nuances of the influencer industry, and she’s on Goal Digger to serve up a master class in building a solid influencer business, from pitching to pricing and more.

It doesn’t matter what kind of business you’re operating, it doesn’t matter if you’re a solopreneur or have a team of 20, it doesn’t matter what kind of social media presence you have… The true power to harness your audience lies in email lists. Your email list offers you these opportunities for sweet and direct conversations with the people who are most interested in your brand and what you have to offer. And I don’t care if you have 100 subscribers or 10,000, those people opted into YOUR list for a reason, and they’re who you want to nurture and serve and pay attention to the MOST earnestly.

We’re going to talk about the one of the most integral parts of email marketing, which is getting your emails read! I am going to equip you with the tools to make sure every time someone hears that “you’ve got mail” voice in their head and sees an email from ya land in their inbox, they are stoked to open it up and read it.

It’s been over a year since the man of my dreams, my baby daddy, my husband Drew Kutcher stepped up to the mic for an episode of The Goal Digger Podcast. Time is flying! I invited him back on the show for a deep dive discussion about navigating business as it intertwines with our marriage. After almost a decade of being Mr. and Mrs. we’ve navigated through many different seasons of professional and personal life together, so we are going back in time to the earliest days of entrepreneurship to reflect on what we’ve learned.

This episode is for you if you’re curious about how to talk to your partner about your big business dreams, or if you’re considering going into business with your significant other. Drew reveals how he actually felt when I told him I was leaving my stable corporate job, his advice for starting a business that’s separate from your relationship, and what it’s like to be a partner to a dreamer.

No matter what kind of business you have, or want to have, one of the best strategies to figure out what your customers want from you is to ask. There’s an art to this process, and an artist I love to watch in action is Bethany McDaniel.

Now you may have heard Bethany’s name on the podcast before if you’ve been around here for a while. She was a guest back on New Year’s Day 2018. And her business has expanded like crazy since then -- Thanks to her continual focus on listening to what her customers want. In the 2020 environment where people are shopping for needs over wants, I’m so excited to hear from Bethany about how the feedback loop is different, and how she’s still showing up in ways both new and devoted customers want.

Why aren’t email lists talked about like they’re the sexiest marketing strategy ever? Let me tell ya, email lists *are* sexy. My list drives insane profits for my business and without it, I wouldn’t be reaching and impacting the people I’m lucky enough to speak to via their inboxes each week.

In this episode of the Goal Digger Podcast, Kylie is asking me alllll about email lists in a new way. We’ll dig into why your newsletter form is failing you, how to start from zero subscribers, what do you do if you have a dormant list, and the email marketing strategies that actually worked in 2020… Because we all know this year looked way different than any year that came before it.

How often do you go back to your roots, where it all started? I did this the other day with the Goal Digger Podcast, rewinding all the way back to episode number two and my first ever guest on the show, Jen Olmstead. I wanted to invite her back on the podcast for another go-around, because so much has changed since that episode on November 18, 2016.

Jen Olmstead knows websites, and she’s one half of the Tonic Site Shop duo that has been helping Jenna Kutcher websites look fab since my very first site design. Jen knows how to present your brand in a way that stands out from the masses and attracts your ideal customers, even without a fully custom web design. We’re talking about what she knows best -- website design. She shares why “looking the part” doesn’t have to mean a totally custom design, the crucial components of any business site, and the key clues that your site might be ready for a little refresh.

Psst… Looking for the discount code mentioned in the episode? Visit Tonic Site Shop and use code: JENNASENTME for 15% off your order!

This episode is not meant to give you all the answers. It’s not meant to sort life out after the tornado that swept through in the form of 2020. It is, however, going to give you some ideas to take the next two months and some changes to find balance and peace again and to focus on what you CAN control, if you feel you’ve lost control of this year.

So whether you’re ready for a reset but don’t want to wait for New Years Day, or you just want to focus on one small habit that might lift you up out of the shadows as we wrap up the year… I hope these 10 ideas for ways to end 2020 seeing the silver linings, like my mom taught me to. I hope they fill you up and remind you that, no matter what’s happening around you, you still carry the power to choose how you respond and how you carry yourself forward and out of the depths of hard times. I fully believe in you and know you can end this year better than it started… Here are some ideas on how.

How old were you when you learned that your menstrual cycle had phases? And those phases, when tracked and studied on a personal level, can unlock some pretty mind blowing productivity and wellness changes? Were you *today* years old? Yeah, I spent most of my menstruating life not knowing anything in-depth about my cycle.

We’ve had a period coach educator on the show before and it’s clear — you’re a big fan of learning about your body and understanding your cycle in a way to help you do more and do better in business. If you are someone who menstruates, Berrion Berry is about to become your new BFF. She’s the creator of the The Flo Academy, educating people on holistic menstrual health. She helps her clients understand and harness the power of their cycle to increase energy, enhance their mood, and alleviate PMS naturally. If THAT sounds like something you could get on board with, then it’s time for you to meet Berrion Berry.

That big goal or dream you have? It’s actually the very thing that holds us back more often than not! Let’s focus more on the small, daily steps and actions to get you there because that is what will change your life. The only way to actually achieve your goals is to build systems that propel you toward them every single day.

In this episode, we’ll talk about how to build these systems so that you can achieve ANY lofty goal you might have on your heart, whether it’s for work, your family, your finances, or something personal. And more than that, we’ll talk about how to create habits that reinforce your system, so achieving a goal isn’t just a one-time thing, but a life-changing thing that sticks around and makes you better long-term, not just on the day you get to check off your goal.

Episode 400. FOUR HUNDRED. How is that number possible? The Goal Digger Podcast launched as a labor of love mixed with lots of hard work, topped off with the magic and kindness of each and every guest who volunteered their time to be part of my big podcasting dream.

I’m going back to episode one because I think it’ll be not only fun to look back on how this whole show started, but I’m also excited to share how my view of some of the biggest topics I teach on have shifted since I launched as a 28-year old entrepreneur, a few years into her online business, with bright eyes on the future. My views and teachings on topics like legacy, social media, privacy, authenticity and more have evolved in the last four years, and I want to share that all with you in this episode. Does it get any better than talking social media, email list building, AND a little strategy?! This is basically like Christmas morning for me! In this episode, we’re delving into how they all go hand in hand and how to strategically use your social platforms to grow that email list.

But first things first, why does this even matter? Why *should* we use social media to grow the list? After all, isn’t social media its own separate beast meant for engaging and beating the algorithm and connecting with your ideal audience and booking your dream customers and clients? Well, yes, but it’s also completely owned and controlled by other people. It’s not your domain, you don’t own your followers, it’s not your platform, so ultimately, you’re left with almost zero control. Hit play for my social media secrets that will help you grow your email list.
