Just four months after Maryna got her motorcycle license, she met Paul at a motorcycle meet. After months of trying to get Maryna to go on a date with him, telling her to just say yes, she finally relented. Since then, Paul has convinced Maryna to just say yes to almost anything. Buying a home, getting married and then riding the world on motorcycles. They’ve been on the road for almost a year, and now plan to stay out for another year. Motorcycles brought them together, and just saying yes has brought new adventure in to their lives.

The Cat and the Motorcycle

We’ve all heard of travelling dogs, in sidecars or carriers on motorcycles, but a cat? While on a motorcycle trip in Morocco, Martin Klauka met up with a stray cat. Feeling compassion for the dirty and flea ridden cat he decided to keep it, but if he was going to bring the cat along with him, it would have to ride on his bike. Since that day, Martin and his cat, Mogli, have been together, and Mogli has a first class seat in the tank bag of Martin’s motorcycle.

Steph Jeavons left the Ace Cafe in London, UK in March 2014 on her Honda CRF 250L. And 4 years later, on a cold and snow-patched day in March 2018, she completed her trip when she arrived back at the Ace Cafe. When we last spoke to her, she expected to be on the road for another year, but what was supposed to be a three year journey ended up being four, as she dealt with health issues and more. Steph talks about what it’s like to travel on a small bike, and about how to deal with catching the travel bug. With an apprehensive start at the beginning of her adventure, she has come back an even more confident person, learning much about herself, people and travel along the way.

Janelle Kaczmarzewski describes herself as an anti-wildlife trafficking motorcycle journalist and a motorcycle gypsy. Passionate about wildlife, she travels to far off places on her motorcycle educating and informing people about illegal animal poaching and trafficking. She’s equates motorcycles with freedom, living a  minimalistic life on the road, when she’s not home visiting family. In 1999, Ian Coates set out for an adventure that was supposed to be just four months. But, he got a bit sidetracked and was a few years late. He had no plan, no map, just the desire to explore and experience, and a positive, easy going attitude that literally took him places. He experienced cultures and people in ways that most of us miss as we rush from place to place. An incredible tolerance for things that go wrong and patience that is almost unbelievable, retirement just may have been the best thing that ever happened to Ian.

Overland Expo was founded in 2009, an event drawing in people from all over the world to both the West and East of the United States. The goal was to inspire people to do overland explorations and to educate in the necessary skills and resources. The Ace Cafe in London, England has a history going back as far as 1938. Beginning as a roadside diner catering to hungry truckers, it evolved in to a popular motorcycle hang out. Setbacks led to the shut down of the iconic motorbike meeting place when it was bombed in the Second World War and again with the evolution of the Austin Mini. Although it had been resurrected a couple of times, the Ace Cafe didn’t realize it’s full potential until Mark Wilsmore’s plan and determination to reopen the it came in to fruition. From the Ace Cafe in London was born an international following which lead to the opening of Ace Cafes in other locations, including Beijing and the United States.

Today, the Ace Cafe is a place for petrolheads, people who love the smell of gasoline and oil, motorbikes and cars. Somewhere to hang out and talk, to swap ideas, to show their vehicles, to enjoy themselves. To sit down, listen to music, have a meal and a cup of coffee with like minded people.

In 2012, Claire Elsdon, who was a stockbroker for 8 years in London, England, went on a solo motorcycle adventure from London to Capetown. While in Africa she saw how the communities were lacking in motorcycle maintenance skills, which were needed for vital services. In a bold move, Claire moved to Mwanza, Tanzania in 2016 to set up Africa’s First Women’s Motorcycle Maintenance Workshop, called Pikilily. Here she has helped groups such as midwives learn the skills they need that make the difference in the projects being a lasting success.

In 2013, Christopher Venter went on an adventure on a 150cc LML Vespa scooter with three other riders. They had set out on a charity ride for a local children’s hospital. His 32,000 km trip took him from Cape Town, South Africa to Dublin, Ireland, with some detours along the way. An illness he contracted while riding in Africa meant he had to make some changes to his route as he sought medical attention. And then being the adventurer that he was, he continued the trip, even though he still felt some of the effects of the illness. When Christopher completed the trip, and he was still not feeling well, he again sought medical help. After much testing, Christopher received some startling news and his life was forever changed. The outcome could have been very different, but Christopher’s story gives us all hope that any challenge can be met with the right attitude.

According to the Motorcycle Council of NSW, Inc in Australia, the symptoms of fatigue for drivers of enclosed vehicles may differ from a fatigued motorcyclist. It’s important to recognize these signs.

*Driver Fatigue Symptoms include:

•loss of concentration •drowsiness, yawning •slow reactions •sore or tired eyes •boredom •feeling irritable and restless •making fewer and larger steering corrections •missing road signs •having difficulty in staying in the lane •having microsleeps.

*The symptoms of rider fatigue include:

•joint and muscle stiffness •pain or weakness in hands and feet •loss of concentration •slow or impaired judgment and reactions.

And the scary thing is that although a rider may feel fully awake, they may actually be fatigued without realizing it, and make a judgement error, resulting in crashing on a curve or an accident while overtaking another vehicle.

Because riding a motorcycle is different than riding a car, in that it is more demanding both mentally and physically, it’s likely you’ll be tired from the physical challenges rather than boredom.

So how to beat this? Who better to ask than four people who ride motorcycles and have experience in dealing with fatigue: a scientist, a pillion, a racer and a long distance rider.

Jacqui Furneaux lived a conventional life in her home in the UK, she was happily married, had two daughters and worked as a nurse. And then when circumstances in her life changed, she made a decision to take her Royal Enfield motorcycle on a trip, leaving with no set plan in place. She travelled through many countries on her motorcycle for seven years, experiencing many ups and downs, challenges, learning lessons, and in the end, she says it was love that ended her years of travel, bringing her back home to her family.

After 25 years as an electrical engineer, Bob Lilley quit his job and started working at a motorcycle dealer. Bob’s been in to motorcycles since a young age, he says he grew up in the perfect environment that encouraged him to ride, a magical childhood. Dimitrios Tournas was born in Greece, moved to the Netherlands when he was 29 and now lives in the United States. If you’ve seen the movie Yes Man, starring Jim Carrey, then you’ve already got a pretty good insight in to Dimitri. Although he is more sensible about the lengths he will go to, he does like to seize opportunities to complete tasks that are achievable. 

In 2004, when visiting Greece he had a motorcycle accident that left him with the realization that life was not infinite, and that even if you don’t take risks, and live your life cautiously, the day will come when you may be at the end of your life looking back. 

Although the accident deterred him from riding for many years, his interest in it didn’t evaporate. When he moved to the United States his passion was reignited and it set him on the path to expanding his comfort zone. He once again took up riding, and he purchased a dual sport motorcycle. When he saw a GS Trophy poster at the BMW dealership, even with no off-road riding experience, he decided to sign up for a riding school course with his sights set on competing in the challenging adventure.

Having a strong grip is an important part of motorcycle riding to ensure you have proper control when it comes to the front brake, clutch and throttle. And when we stop riding for the season in the winter, or for other reasons, we need to make sure to maintain the strength in our hands, or when it comes time to ride again, you may experience weakness or hand cramping, especially in heavy traffic or when riding off-road. Bret Tkacs explains how to maintain your hand strength in the off season and how it affects your riding.

At 72 years old, Linda Bootherstone-Bick, a folk music musician and motorcycle traveller, has a truly inspiring attitude when it comes to travel. Born in the UK, she now calls Australia home, and it’s the base she returns to after her adventures. She has a unique thought process and method of travel which every person should try to aspire to.

The author of three motorcycle travel adventure books, she’s been riding a motorcycle for over 50 years. Linda recently returned from a 3 month trip to Uganda, where she bought a mechanically challenged Yamaha 125 motorcycle. David Woodburn is from Australia, and he’s been doing trips on a motorcycle since he was 17 years old. In 1986 he met Emy in the Philippines, where they worked together doing volunteer work. They married, returned to Australia and managed to pull together enough money to buy a well used motorcycle. Soon Amy discovered she was pregnant, and their daughter, Mattea was born. Finding it difficult to find work, the loaded their motorcycle with a sidecar and started their journey in 1990. They travelled around Europe and Africa until Mattea was 11 years old, and ended up settling in Miami, Florida, which was the biggest culture shock for them. Now almost two decades later, they live in Georgia and run an independent workshop specializing in older BMW and British motorcycles.

20 Years of Horizons Unlimited: Grant & Susan Johnson 

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Horizons Unlimited, a resource for adventure travellers, especially motorcyclists. Founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson, their website, forum and events around the world, inspire people to follow their dreams and travel to far away places.

 Riding Motorcycles for Slower Travel | Tight Turning Made Easier

It’s commonly said that you need to slow down to see more while travelling, well how about speeding up to see more? Helen Lloyd has done just that. She’s an engineer in the UK who loves travel, writing and photography. And she’d spent much time travelling on a bicycle until she decided to get a motorcycle. After riding through Africa on her bicycle she returned years later on a Yamaha XT225, and she discovered that moving faster meant slowing down. SKILLS: Turning Around on Your Motorcycle 

Everyone at some point runs in to the situation where they have to make a tight u-turn or turn around, in both high and low traction situations. Back in 1982, Helge Pedersen bought one of the first BMW R80GS motorcycles to enter his home country, Norway. He sold everything he owned and soon found himself in South America crossing the Darien Gap, a feat which few attempt. Helge stayed on the road, living a vagabond lifestyle for 10 years. A chat with motorcycle author and publisher, Mike Fitterling about what adventure is and the rejuvenating qualities of riding a motorcycle. Northeast by Northwest: Two Restorative Journeys 

Mike Fitterling was dealing with depression and stress, a common issue with people around the world.  According to the World Health Organization, “depression is the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide”. More than 300 million people suffer from depression, and in many countries there is little to no support available, and even in higher income countries, nearly 50% of people do not get treatment.

Mike’s story is something that most people can connect with. At some point or another, we all have to deal with stressful situations, that may affect us more deeply than we think possible. And climbing out of that can be overwhelming.

To deal with his depression, Mike decided a motorcycle trip was what was needed, he had to find a way to help himself. With a limited budget and time, he managed to take two motorcycle trips in the United States. Two adventures that helped change his life, bringing back his faith in human kind and the strength to live a happier life.

Mike also shares his thoughts on adventure, travelling on a budget, using forums to plan accommodations, and more.

Hitting a Road Block on the Last Leg of His Trip 

Spencer James Conway has a goal of circumnavigating every continent, and his last adventure has been in South America. On October 7th he posted on Facebook that he was just two weeks away from completing his trip. In 2003, a motorcycle race crash left Coach Ramey with a spinal cord injury leaving him paralyzed from the chest down. It took a year of daily exercise for him to just stand up from the wheelchair and then another year of hard work to crawl over onto the seat of a motorcycle and sidecar. After four years of intense rehabilitation he was walking with two canes and then the world was his. Since then he has ridden around the world on three wheels. He has returned to coaching racers and adventure riders. He has written a book for new riders. And he still rides hard at the age of 70. His next goal?The ALCAN5000 in 2018.
