We've waited longer than usual (in more ways than one), but the Australian Open preview is here. Gill Gross breaks down the draw quarter-by-quarter: quarterfinal predictions, dark horses, upset alerts and popcorn matchups. Top-seeded Novak Djokovic seeks his 9th Australian Open title, in a quarter with Alexander Zverev, occasional kryptonite Stan Wawrinka, and big-serving Milos Raonic. Dominic Thiem looks to back up last year's run at the final with another strong showing, as Pablo Carreno Busta and Diego Schwartzman loom in his quarter. Russians Daniil Medvedev (4) and Andrey Rublev (7) come off an ATP Cup victory, and are now paired in the same quarter in the bottom half of the draw. Finally, Rafael Nadal seeks major #21, hoping his back holds up against the likes of Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini in his quarter.

Controversy has struck the Australian Open, as well over 50 players are affected by positive tests on their charter flights to Australia, resulting in mandated 14-day quarantines in their hotel rooms. Warring perspectives have emerged; some taking the side of disgruntled players and others defending Tennis Australia and the Victorian government, while chiding players for their attitudes. I argue for both sides. The debacle has also exposed the communication issues that exist in tennis. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Serena Williams, Naoimi Osaka and Simona Halep are quarantining in Adelaide (South Australia), clearly benefitting from favorable conditions. In the DB4 Tennis Stat of the Week, a fascinating WTA trend has emerged at Slams over the last five years. Finally, I react to Hubert Hurkacz's triumph at Delray Beach, and Australian Open qualifiers, including Carlos Alcaraz and Bernard Tomic.

It's time to predict the ATP Top 10 for 2021. Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer look to continue to fend off the fast-improving younger generation. The aforementioned crop of players--- Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev--- seek a breakthrough. Jannik Sinner blasted his way to the quarterfinal at Roland Garros with a four-set victory over five-seed Alexander Zverev. This is Sinner's first French Open main draw, and the first to reach the QF in a debut since Rafael Nadal in 2005. After the match, Zverev admitted to having fever and breathing difficulties prompting concern about Covid-19 protocols at the French Open. In another feature match from Sunday, Dominic Thiem had to battle hard for 5 sets with young Frenchman Hugo Gaston, ultimately prevailing. Gaston had beaten Wawrinka in the third round and his unorthodox tactics bothered Thiem as well. After three losses in major finals, Dominic Thiem triumphed in Sunday’s US Open final against Alexander Zverev, becoming the first new grand slam champion since 2014, and the first player in the open era to come back from two sets to love down in a major final. The match was riddled with nerves from both players. The tennis was not beautiful, but the psychological struggle made for quite the spectacle. I discuss what this means for both players career moving forward, examine the momentum swings in the match, and what ultimately separated Thiem from Zverev in a tight 5th set. Novak Djokovic was in the first set of his Third Round US Open match with Pablo Carreno Busta. After getting broken for 6-5, Djokovic took a ball out of his pocket and hit it towards the back wall, where it struck a lineswoman in the throat. The incident resulted in an immediate match penalty against Djokovic. I breakdown why this happened, if the correct call made and is the correct rule is in place? Never before had a Canadian made the quarterfinal of the Open. Novak Djokovic tied Rafael Nadal with his 35th Masters Title, beating Milos Raonic in three sets in the final at the Western & Southern Open (Cincinnati) in New York. Djokovic has now won every Masters 1000 tournament twice. Raonic is 0-4 in Masters finals. I analyze the first tour-level final in over 5 months. Then, it's on to the 2020 US Open preview and predictions. Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas are the top-seeds. Djokovic is on one of just three players in the draw with a major title. There haven't been more seeded players under 25 since the 2010 Australian Open. Is it time for a breakthrough champion?

On this week's Monday Match Analysis, I discuss the first couple days of the Western & Southern Open (Cincinnati) in New York. The "temporary normal" in tennis is no crowds and no lines judges: is it still enjoyable? The feature match is British number one Dan Evans against 12-seed Andrey Rublev. Evans proves to be a bad matchup for the Russian, and despite a good gameplan and some technical improvements for Rublev, it was Evans coming through. In our second match, find out how #6 Stefanos Tsitsipas beat former US Open finalist Kevin Anderson without breaking a sweat.

Tennis is back with the ATP Masters 1000 Western & Southern Open, usually in Cincinnati, but this year in New York at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The courts are composed of a brand new surface this year. Despite, having not seen most of the players since March, I go quarter by quarter and preview the draw.
