April is Autism Awareness month. As you may know, one in 36 children have been identified with Autism Spectrum Disorder, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Talking about not only how to understand but how we can help these amazing kids has never been more important. In this episode, we’ve got a wise parent in the trenches, who also happens to be Sissy’s step-sister helping us learn more about what we can do to support the kids and families in our lives who are living with this diagnosis. We also have a podcast playlist on our website on Raising Neurodivergent Kids, on the resource tab, for more help from other parents and professionals.

Today, our dear friend and Senior Director at Daystar, Melissa, talks about the second spiritual milestone (from Are My Kids on Track) called Identity and how deeply important it is in the lives of kids. We have the high and holy calling of echoing the truths that God is speaking into the lives of the kids we love…of helping to remind them not only of who they are, but whose they are. You will love this conversation with Melissa on how to do just that.

Have you ever heard of play therapy? It’s based on the idea that play is the language of kids. Well, our friends Georgie Wisen-Vincent and Dr. Tina Payne Bryson have written the book that decodes that language for us all, The Way of Play: Using Little Moments of Big Connection to Raise Calm and Confident Kids! We had the privilege of interviewing Georgie about the new book and can’t wait for you all to listen. She gives such great tips for us on how to not only understand, but connect with, help kids regulate and more through the magic of play. You’re going to love this episode! And you’re going to want to share it with all the parents of littles you know!

Here are some other helpful episodes on this topic you may enjoy!

It was such a gift to sit down with Savannah Guthrie and laugh with and learn from her. She is every bit as delightful and warm and hilarious and kind and deep and wise as you would guess her to be. So much truth and so much hope infused in this podcast and her new wonder of a children’s book, Mostly What God Does is Love You.

We talk sometimes, in counseling, about how it feels like there is one child in your home who is reflecting outside what the temperature is like outside—kind of like our own, dysfunctional barometer. As much as we wish, in certain seasons, that our marriages didn’t impact our kids, they certainly do. This week, we have Rebecca St. James and her husband Cubbie Fink on the podcast talking about how they have walked the ups and downs of marriage together, and have used each season to strengthen both their relationships with their kids individually and their life as a family. So much wisdom, hope and encouragement in this episode—we can’t wait for you to listen!

Jemar Tisby has been a 6th grade teacher, middle school principal, now college professor, historian, author, activist, and all around great guy. We were delighted to sit down and learn from the history he has taught and the legacy he has lived for today’s podcast. We have a feeling you will have the same experience: you’ll laugh, cry, learn more about all of the things that bring us together way more than divide us, and hear his heart for both kids and parents in this tumultuous world. Plus, we all talk about losing our biggest fans, our Moms, and all that they did to shape us. You’re gonna love this one, just as much as we did!

In this week’s episode, we’re talking about his newest book, How Far to the Promised Land, in which he shares his own story of hope and his family’s legacy. We also dive into his two fantastic children’s books: Andy Johnson and the March for Justice and Josey Johnson’s Hair and the Holy Spirit. It is a topic more of us need to be talking about, in our own lives. And it’s certainly a topic we need to be helping the kids we love navigate. We were deeply honored to have Annie F. Downs and her remarkable sister, Tatum Green, share their story of loss on this week’s episode. If you’ve suffered loss, we believe this episode will be one that brings you comfort and hope. If you haven’t, it will equip you to walk alongside the people in your life who have. We all need to listen and learn how to better love each other. We’re so grateful to Tatum and Annie for vulnerably and hopefully reminding us how. And for writing this wonder of a book, Where Did TJ Go?: A Book for Kids on Grief and Loss.

Do you have a teenager living in your house? Or an almost teenager? This was one of our favorite conversations with one of our favorite authors, Rosalind Wiseman. In this episode, she talks about what’s going on with the adolescent guys and girls that we love in relationships, and what we can do to help. And make sure to listen through till the end because she gives us some much needed wisdom on what we can do to motivate the teenagers in our lives. You’re going to love this episode!

One of our favorite comments—whether in counseling or on the road is when we meet folks who tell us that we’re the reason they got a dog (unless they got a bad dog…and then we’d maybe rather not hear about that! 😉) But it has happened more times than we can count because—you all know—we believe so strongly in the power of pets in the lives of kids.

We cannot count how many times we’ve had kids say, when they’re struggling, that the “person” they talk to the most is their dog. So, for all of you who blame or credit us for having a pet…or those of you who are considering a pet for the holidays…we thought we’d introduce you to our dear friend, David Edwards.

David is the owner of Belle Meade Animal Hospital and one of our favorite people! He shares so much wisdom around not only the importance of pets but how we grieve a pet as a family. We can’t wait for you to listen in on this wonderful episode with Patches and June’s hero, David Edwards.

Ep 228: Milestone Six - Reciprocity

24 min
View

This week on the podcast, we’re talking about reciprocity, which simply means the back and forth of conversation—or even relationship. Most kids—most of us—lean toward either initiating or receiving. Think of it like tennis…hitting the ball back and forth. Back and forth. Both are involved in healthy relationships and we want the kids we love to learn to do both!

In these post-covid, technology-ridden times, we believe it’s never been more important to talk about the social milestones, with the first being the milestone of awareness. With the boys and girls we love, we see some universal reasons that kids might struggle with this one.

Episode 222: Hope for Election Day

12 min
View

How are you feeling today? It seems to be one filled with lots of anxiety and trepidation, for lots of us. We kept talking about what we most wanted to hear on Election Day, and so we recorded a podcast including just that! We’ve got a few parenting reminders on what it looks like to model all of these important milestones we’ve been talking about, some conversation starters to share with the kids you love AND the encouragement we needed today…and thought you might, too!

Let’s continue to pray together for wisdom for our leaders and hope for our communities. And let’s keep thinking on that wise quote about being the change we want to see in the world. Grateful to be in it with you today, whatever your political affiliations are, and hope this episode brings you some needed encouragement and hope.

Questions to ask the kids you love!

If you were elected President, what would you want to do the first few days in office?

What are some of the greatest needs in our world today?

What kind of leader would you want to be?

What would you want the new president to know is important for kids today?

If the old saying is “Be the change you want to see in the world,” how could you be a part of the change you want to see in the world?

In Raising Worry-Free Girls, Sissy defines anxiety as an overestimation of the problem and an underestimation of themselves. The same is true for boys. In 30 years of counseling kids, we have never seen kids struggle with the idea of resourcefulness like we do today. You all, we believe this conversation is crucial to helping the kids we love grow up into emotionally healthy adults. They need both the knowledge and the tools it takes to be resourceful. In today’s podcast, Sissy and David are talking about what we can do to help kids build this profoundly important muscle.

Y’all—this one is a PLEASE LISTEN episode. We have been really excited about this episode coming out at this time in our world since we got it scheduled. But after talking with our friends Michael and Melissa Wear, we believe this conversation is imperative for all of us… no matter our political affiliation.

It has been said about Michael Wear, “Even as we find ourselves in a crisis of disillusionment, and even despair, about the state of American politics, Wear reminds us that we must hold fast to the belief that we can change our country and our world for the better. Each of us would do well to adopt at least a bit of Wear’s realistic hopefulness.” His wife speaks to the same kind of buoyant, practical hopefulness, which we all need in this season. We can’t wait for you to listen in on this one.

Episode 215: Milestone Three - Empathy

31 min
View

We’re so grateful to be talking about empathy on the podcast this week. We believe the muscle of empathy is one that kids are struggling to develop more than ever before. In this episode, we talk about why and, even more importantly, what we can do about it. Empathy truly is a pre-requisite for healthy relationships.

So, let’s all work together to help the kids we love grow in their awareness, love, and empathy for those around them, including and maybe even especially those that live under the same roof!
