This week, we discuss what fatwas and cancel culture have in common. Why are we allowing zealots to decide what we can say and do by fiat? The circuitry of religion has an ancient history (even when it goes off the rails, as in the attack on Salman Rushdie); it is being hijacked by a secular cult. This new cult is targeting apostates, and heretics. The new cult does not admit when it is wrong—the CDC simply puts out new guidelines that recommend treating vaccinated and unvaccinated people as equivalent. The new cult sneaks in ideology when you’re not looking. The new cult is anti-science, anti-reality, and anti-democracy.

This week, we discuss why so many things, in modernity, and right now in particular, are labeled the opposite of what they truly are. What we are told is safe, is toxic; we are told we must do, we should not. How did this happen? Beginning with a tale of scientific discovery in the 1990s and early 2000s—involving telomeres and cancer and senescence and mice—we arrive at one answer: if the powers-that-be have insight, they are better served by keeping that insight to themselves, by refusing to share it. And so: all the newspapers, all the universities, all the everything, are failing. This week, we discuss the state of Portland, Oregon, two years after protests and riots made a mess of the city. Still found on the streets: entreaties to abolish the police, and protect “black trans sex workers,” and to attend a pride brunch that is actually a “drag queen brunch.” And yet when you talk to people, you almost invariably find that the veneer on the surface is not what it seems. Few people seem to agree with the coerced consensus: that letting people camp and shoot up and defecate on sidewalks is being compassionate to them; or that men can become women. We discuss whether a minority’s self-declared rights should be allowed to infringe on already established rights of others. And we discuss the self-assembly of rackets to fill niches—such as Covid testing centers that are both lucrative for those running them, and mandatory to participate in activities like international travel, and camp.

And we discuss what a woman is, and why the very question—and the remarkable number of forms that answers take—points to the epidemic of sophistry that we have discussed before.

This week, we discuss science, Covid, vaccines, sunlight, and sophistry. New research suggests that adenovirus-vectored vaccines (e.g. J&J, AstraZeneca) reduce all-cause mortality, but that mRNA vaccines (e.g. Pfizer, Moderna) do not. What are the implications of this? What kinds of vaccines are recommended and effective, and how can someone not trained in thinking about these things know? We also discuss the role of vitamin D in Covid outcomes, as well as NIR (Near Infrared Radiation), which we primarily get from being outside. Since before the Industrial Revolution, our exposure to NIR has declined dramatically—we spend less time outdoors, and now even our lightbulbs and the glass in our windows limits how much NIR we receive, but it turns out that we need it. What else do we need that we don’t yet know about? Finally, we discuss the place for sophistry: in the classroom, where students can learn how to respond, so as to be better thinkers and citizens of the world.

The new current thing is the leaked draft majority opinion from Judge Alito, Supreme Court Justice of the United States, which reveals that Roe v. Wade is likely to be overturned. We discuss abortion, abortion policy, and what Americans say when they’re polled about these things. Is there a hard-and-fast line to draw? Does biology provide insights? We argue that abortion is not a women’s issue, per se, but an issue that pertains to all humanity, while also being a feminist issue.

We discuss the evolution of sex and sex roles (aka gender). We talk about Genetic Sex Determination and Environmental Sex Determination.
