Old Fashioned On Purpose

en us
Have you felt it? Something is rippling through humanity at this moment. It's a stirring... a longing... a remembering. A sense that we are more capable than we’ve been led to believe. We want to feel alive, not sedated.. but we've lost our way. We've traded a life intertwined with nature for asphalt and artificial lights. We've swapped natural movement for a sedentary existence. We've given up food from the earth in favor of food from the factory. We've sacrificed our traditional skillsets for apps and gadgets. But while our overdose on modernity may have made us sick, there is an antidote. Join best-selling author and mentor, Jill Winger, each week as she digs into a different facet of the old-fashioned on purpose lifestyle.

We talk a lot about returning to our roots and reclaiming heritage skills... but what role does your family heritage REALLY play in your homesteading efforts? How can you lean on it for motivation during the stressful times? And what do you do if you DON'T have a rich heritage to draw from?

Today's guest, Dolores Taranto, speaks more beautifully to these topics than anyone else I've come across. This conversation left me feeling so inspired and I know it will leave you feeling the same!

Podcast Episode Highlights

  • Mulling over WHY we homestead and life in general
  • Why we should loosen the grip of modernity in our lives
  • Perspectives that shaped Dolores in her life
  • Tips for those without a rich heritage to draw from
  • Talking about homesteading stereotypes
  • Thinking about a 'sense of place' and where to place focus for future/family
  • Applying the principles of tradition and heritage into the kitchen/food

"How do you find a community of like-minded people who share your beliefs?" I get this question a lot and my answer might surprise you.

It also prompted some interesting discussion on social media, so I'm diving into all the nuance and messy, community-building truth in this podcast episode.

Podcast Episode Highlights

  • Why community is a pillar of the old-fashioned on purpose lifestyle
  • Common questions about creating community
  • Tensions and drama that occurred recently about community on social media
  • Community vs. inner circle (and the topic of influence)
  • Personal foundational beliefs vs. community connections
  • Challenge yourself to be slightly uncomfortable (why that can be a good thing)
  • Why it's good (and also old-fashioned) to push against polarization

Here on the podcast we talk a lot about choosing an old-fashioned path. Sometimes that’s skills like cooking or gardening, but other times, it’s a definitive choice in how we choose to think and move through life. I believe one of the most powerful old-fashioned practices we can adopt is to push against the modern victim mindset.

Today I’m thrilled to be joined by Mike Roberts of The Converse Cowboy. We’re diving deep into mental toughness, battling the resistance, and more in this philosophical episode!

It's time for another Q & A, and this time-- I'm answering the more personal questions I've been getting.

From "What religion are you?" to "what homeschool curriculum do you use?" to "have you ever wanted to quit homesteading?" we're getting vulnerable, real, and a little bit spicy in today's episode!

Our modern era has wreaked havoc on many aspects of our health, but perhaps nothing is as concerning as what conventional life is doing to our guts.

In this podcast episode, I'm joined by holistic nutritionist and gut health guru Josh Dech to take a DEEP dive into why America has some of the worst gut health in the world. Josh is excellent at explaining these topics in a practical, tactical, and interesting way. Plus, he blew my mind with the facts around a common parasite-- don't miss this one!

It's every homesteader's dream to quit their job and become completely self-sufficient selling eggs & soap from their homestead.

The bad news? It's almost impossible to make a full-time income from selling eggs & soap.
The good news? It's entirely possible to make real money from your small farm-- you just need a strategy.

In this episode, I'm joined by farmer and business coach Michael Kilpatrick to bust through the common misconceptions around making money from a farm so you can make actual money instead!

In my travels across the Internet, I hear the topic of pollination coming up more and more. While I think most of us are aware of the decline in bee populations, I want to get to the heart of the issue today.

In this podcast episode, I'm joined by the brilliant Kim Eierman, author and ecological gardener, to discuss what’s really going on with the decrease in pollinators, how can we introduce plants into our gardens and landscapes that SOLVE problems, and how you can plant your own pollinator victory garden.

There’s movement CALORIES and movement NUTRITION--once you understand the difference, you’ll never look at “exercise” the same way again.

As hard as we try to avoid it, modern industrial thinking can easily creep into our homesteads. Take soil health for example. Have you ever walked through the garden store and wondered which of the isolated "ingredients" you should add to your garden to "fix it?" I have! But there's a better way.

I'm joined by Aaron Elison of Redmond Agriculture in this episode. He helps us dismantle this reductionist mindset so we can take a "whole food" approach to caring for your garden. From Nature's Intelligence to a surprising way to remove toxins from your soil, this episode is full of nuggets!
