FITTING IN WORKOUTS Vinnie's been so busy pushing this movie that he hasn't left the house in ages. But, he makes sure to fit in a workout on the bike. It's less than he would do normally, but it's something. Anna does something similar. She spreads out her weight lifting sets on the ends of doing tasks around the house. For example, she'll do a set and then unpack. Then she'll do a set and respond to some emails. Then she'll do another set, and so on. You can break up your workouts just to get some exercise in. And, something is better than nothing, even if it's fifteen minutes or just a walk! Just get moving. HOLIDAY RECIPES Anna has great NSNG recipes in her cookbooks and on her site. Vinnie's going to make her egg nog. Don't forget to bake in time for it to cool properly. You need a cup of half and half, four egg yolks, ground cinnamon, vanilla (without sugar). Whisk egg yolks for awhile, they will start to get light and fluffy, even without sugar. Heat up the milk and cream -- Anna uses whole milk and heavy cream to make her own. Take a little bit of this and drip it into the egg yolks -- it's called tempering the yolks so the eggs don't poach. Add until it's all mixed in. Then add the powdered spices and the vanilla. High quality vanilla really ties everything together. It makes it taste like a real dessert. Cover it with the saran wrap touching the surface of the pudding and put it in the fridge. She has been on the show before! Sometimes she is lovingly referred to as 'Vinnie's girlfriend,' despite the fact the two haven't met in person. She has lost 50 lbs eating NSNG®. She began this way of eating in 2015. The first 30-40 went quickly, but the last 10-20 took far longer. This just goes to show: if you feel like you're stalling, be patient. FINDING HOPE THROUGH NSNG® Before this, she did some boring and blasé exercise, and even with calorie restriction, she didn't lose weight. The gym wasn't fun and she didn't feel good. Now, that's very different. This way of eating gave her more energy and made her feel like she could do more. It gave her hope. CONQUERING SOMETHING NEW Leona first heard of these in 2018. She was not really an athlete growing up. But this piqued her interest. Spartan Races come in all different shapes and sizes. The races are different lengths, have different obstacles varying in difficulty and number, and the like. Leona wanted to push herself out of her comfort zone and do something different. She did her first one in 2019! Vinnie's always loved these adventure-type events, but he does think these are kind of crazy! These certainly keep us entertained. They have little quirks, like penalties if you mess up the obstacles. In some heats, you'll have to do burpees, for example. Leona had to do 75 in her last race. Part of the race is the mental aspect. You have to get over that feeling that you might not be able to do something. INSPIRED BY ROCKY Mike Kunda is a Rocky interpreter and Rocky film tour guide. He can do the voice, he can do the look. In fact, Mike was in a movie called "The Pretender," available on platforms like Amazon Prime, where he discusses his life as a Rocky interpreter and the like. It was picked up by Gravitas. The movie went international and changed his life. As a kid, Mike was very insecure and loved to dress up. He, however, was 350 lbs himself at around 5'11". Now he is around 195 lbs. He's also now a runner, and he does some fasting. He finished 5th recently in a 5k! His wife really encouraged him to lose weight via low carb. She said that he was going to die and leave her with their kids. Tro has specialties in obesity, diabetes, nutrition. He recognizes that the whole food part of Game Changers is real, but the plant based part is messy (at best) science. He feels that setting an example for his patients is incredibly important. Tro also strongly believes in fasted exercise, though it is less important than diet itself. NUTRITION EDUCATION Tro did med school, 3 years of training for internal medicine. In the whole of med school, they maybe spent a week on nutrition education while learning other things. The nutrition consultations that he did give, he'd say "cut sugar and fat, go see a nutritionist," and that was it. If a doctor with the best, very extensive, education can't figure out why HE is fat, that's a problem. Most of his people start with a dirty keto approach. He doesn't think this is the best, but if it helps them, then okay! He'll teach people how to intermittently fast. When they did Mont Blanc, Don was the heavy guy. He could still climb as well as the rest. But, the guides look at him and thought he was obese. When he's with Vinnie, he eats clean. However, as soon as Vinnie's nephews pulled out the Swedish Fish, Don was all in. He has a sugar and carb addiction. Don would do 70 hours of aerobics a month, but remained morbidly obese. About two years ago, he tried to fight this addiction. He abstained completely from sugar and grains. Now, Don looks fabulous -- slim and trim and he looks as athletic and fit as he is. The only thing Don has to do is continue to fight this addiction. While it isn't an easy task to start, it becomes much easier with time. Cut all of the crap out and go all in for several weeks, and you will notice the addiction start to fade. Don can now climb to his heart's content, without his weight literally weighing him down. If you're pounding the nuts and you feel like you can't stop eating them, be mindful of that binge-like feeling. BAD DIET MENTALITY You need to try to beat the diet mentality when breaking the addiction. If you eat something a little carby, try not to think you've been 'bad.' Just get back on the horse. If you have a pear or something like that, don't beat yourself up. This is about fueling your body healthily. This isn't a reward and punishment system. Going back and forth can also confuse these numbers. "Keto" products will often affect your ketone levels...negatively. Almond milk or an almond butter smoothie could affect these levels. Apples, too. These little things add up if you do them every day. However, Krista also lost weight while eating this way. She and her family were featured in the first Fat Doc. Her son has Type 1 diabetes. The family discovered this when she came back from a trip, and her son's weight had dropped from 46 to 40 lbs. Immediately, she rushed him to the hospital and he was diagnosed. In that moment, they realized they would have to change the way they eat. The dietitian was prescribing them all kinds of sugary foods. She was told the kid needed 60g of carbs a meal, and she wanted to do anything she could to help him, so she did it. She feels her diet was healthier before this. For 3 years, Bethany followed these rules and her son felt truly terrible and unhealthy. Then, she discovered that high carb was not the way to go. MANAGING TYPE 1 DIABETES It took Bethany awhile to realize eating all of this sugar was not helping her son. He had headaches, his blood sugar was always high, and it was simply unhealthy. Bethany found low carb and it has, with careful control, worked wonders for her son and for her family. When her son was 8, her doctor was so incredulous and said her son wouldn't grow right and would have an eating disorder. It was clear he just didn't understand. Her son was eating veggies and good protein and the like. She could see what the food was doing to her son's blood sugar, and it was clear that this diet was helping keeping it under control. This has given their family so much life and joy. Her son is healthy, smart, a stellar athlete, and has a fantastic relationship with food and with his parents. He realized he had to take action about his morbid obesity when his daughter ran out into the middle of the street and he couldn't run to catch her. At that time, Scott was 550 lbs. Nothing happened to his daughter, but it was a wake up call. Shortly thereafter, he found Vinnie and other like-minded individuals. He finally started moving around. Scott is 6'1" 250 lbs now! Last year, he had skin removal surgery which he is grateful for. They took about 10 lbs off. INEFFECTIVE CALORIE DEFICITS Previously, Scott had tried everything, he thought. Weight Watchers, shakes, CICO, and more. He had a gastric bypass at 552 lbs and got down to 276. None of it stuck. Scott and so many others yo-yo with CICO. It's not sustainable. The two most common surgeries he performs are bypass surgeries and surgeries dealing with lung cancer. When it comes to the heart, he's a plumber. As a heart surgery, he tries to help his patients understand cholesterol. Just because cholesterol is there when there's a heart problem, doesn't mean *it* is causing the problem. FINDING ACCURATE INFORMATION To some exact, the information you receive is being controlled. With health, the proprietors of the food control the flow of information. Grain companies fund studies, others would have to admit being wrong, and more. Think of all the lies we hear about health every day! And, think of the environmentalists view of meat and how simply wrong that is. Vinnie's doc will try to tackle some of this misinformation-spreading and gatekeeping. "Experts" are pushing us away from the most important thing in our history with respect to our advancement: meat. Dr. Ovadia tries to get and teach people how to keep themselves healthy. There has never been evidence that processed foods are good for you, but all of this meat substitutes are just that. There's a way to be a healthy vegan. But you have to be intentional. IMPROVING METABOLIC HEALTH Dr. Ovadia focuses on the metabolic health of his patients. We can learn so much from this. Over 80% of adults could not meet in-range levels of some measures of this health. There are several good measures of our metabolic health: Blood pressure. If you're on medication, you've already failed. Blood glucose. Cholesterol LDL levels. Waist circumference. Triglycerides. He talks through these markers. Consider asking your doctor about how you match up here, or check out the ranges online. We can improve our metabolic health through our nutrition. TAKING RESPONSIBILITY If you don't think you have time to 'eat healthy,' Vinnie bets you do. Do you make your kids' breakfast. Go do your morning breakfast-preparing routine, and see how long it takes you. Do it at a normal speed, but don't count washing dishes. Now, scramble some eggs the next morning for you and your kids and see how long that takes. It will likely be comparable. If making healthy food means waking up three or five minutes earlier, that will be worth it when you feel better. We have to take responsibly for our decisions. You CAN do this. This lesson--of taking responsibility--should apply to everything you want to do that might feel a little out of reach right now because you're busy. You can also meal prep. Boil some eggs and put them in the fridge. Or make some bone broth. When you pull these things out the next day, it's faster than making cereal. Entered US market in the 50s. Soybean and other vegetable oil corporations were angry about this. A stunt to keep out foreign competition. Case to be made that the sat fat lies are due to a trade war. Good to use in manufacturing and don't cause inflammation like many others do! It's awful because this trade war has made so many unhealthy. Many who have decided these are bad for you find they can't go back on it because of the psychology of going against your life's work. Effort to shore Ancel Keys' work up in an effort to make themselves feel better. Studies also use too small a sample size for those who are low carb. If people are still fat after 60 years of following these dietary guidelines, maybe it's the guidelines that are the problem. He got a D1 football scholarship to Tulane. It's good for kids to play many sports. It can often help the other sports, too. We should encourage this!
