Another Mother Runner

en us
A family of two podcasts to get (+ keep) you running without losing your family, friends, job, or sanity! More than 1,000 (!) back episodes to enjoy. Every Friday on the original show (launched in 2011), host Sarah Bowen Shea, a mom of three and veteran of 14 marathons, is joined by a rotating cast of co-hosts and often a guest expert to discuss topics ranging from how to reach a big race goal to finding your athletic happy place, and everything in between. Training, nutrition, motivation, mental toughness, TMI issues: This ~hour-long show covers it all (and then some!).  Every Tuesday, Miles of Books drops, alternating Ellison Weist chatting fiction one week with Sarah Bowen Shea and non-fiction with Coach Liz Waterstraat and Sarah the next. In about 30 minutes, the hosts entice and entertain you with plot descriptions and pearls of training (and life!) advice to guide you to your next great reads. Both shows are witty and conversational, making them great running partners because the AMR gals do all the talking—even on the uphills!

Alex Hutchinson, author of the newly released ENDURE: Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human Performance, joins the conversation to talk about mental endurance and the power of the mind.

In calming tones, Alex explains limits are negotiable and the importance of getting out of your own way. From “the base of the mountain,” he talks about how to become aware of the internal monologue you have with yourself on a run—and how to reframe that “conversation” to enhance self-belief. Nod along as Alex discusses the “deeply worn grooves in your mind.” Validation that the mere perception of mental fatigue (sigh) can affect a run leads to an intriguing pre-race suggestion. Sarah and Alex discuss the timing of when to work out, with Alex offering a practical point sure to resonate with mother runners. He offers many bits of running advice that apply for everyday life, including singing the praises of running with someone. Nuun-drinking game: Chug every time any of the trio says, “South Africa.”

AMR Trains #1: How to Stop Sugar Cravings

39 min
View

Welcome to AMR Trains, a new podcast under the Another Mother Runner pod umbrella and based on the Train Like a Mother Club.

In this podcast that comes out every other Tuesday, we’re going to focus on topics related to training: everything from the best cross-training for runners to how to mentally stay in a race to how to optimally nourish your body. Our guests will include Train Like a Mother Coaches, a variety of #motherrunners talking about their athletic feats (because we love vicarious racing and training!) and other engaging experts.

Before we dive into fartleks and finish lines, we’re going to tackle a subject that affects our training—and our moods, metabolism and pretty much everything else: Sugar—and how to minimize its effect on us.

In this first episode, Dimity talks to dietician Ellie Kempton, MSN, RD, the expert behind Simply Nourished Like a Mother and Metabolic Reset, who helps us back away from the Ben + Jerry’s.

Simply Nourished Like a Mother, an 8-week foundational program, runs from January 13 to March 9.

Metabolic Reset, a 12-week program focused on weight loss and metabolic makeover, runs from January 13 to April 5.

51 min
View

Sarah and Coach Amanda gab with Kelly McGonigal, Ph.D., a research psychologist and lecturer at Stanford University as well as author of the just-released book The Joy of Movement: How Exercise Helps Us Find Happiness, Hope, Connection, and Courage, about why exercise helps our minds and moods. Dr. McGonigal talks with the duo about:

-how to “tend and befriend” stress;

-the science of a runner’s high—and the potent benefits of it;

-why moving in synchronicity with people is so potent;

-why you should become an early bird exerciser, if you’re not already;

-how to mentally cope with a sidelining injury; and,

-how to bring more joy to your life.

Sarah and Amanda talk about their families’ holiday breaks, and the guest joins the show at 14:33.
