I've recently been training a few USTA doubles teams, helping them prepare for nationals. In this episode, I'll share five things I told them to practice that are neglected by club-level doubles players & teams.

Practicing these skills will help you make the other team play bad because most doubles teams you'll face won't be used to seeing this stuff.

  • I'll cover a specific return that you probably use but never practice.
  • Why you're practicing volleys the wrong way.
  • The key to your 2nd serve.
  • What you need to improve to beat pushers.

Communication and teamwork in doubles aren't easy to teach or measure. That's why I think I've neglected the subject a bit over the years. But over and over, the world's best players, like recent podcast guests and US Open Champions, Rajeev Ram & Erin Routliffe, continue to stress the importance of working together with their partner, communicating effectively, and building trust.

This episode covers what I think you should be communicating with your partner before, during, and after your matches, including what to do during tiebreakers and pressure moments. Following this advice should help you better strategize and communicate with your doubles partner.

I recently played in USTA 9.0 Mixed Doubles Sectionals in Abilene, TX. This episode covers 3 lessons learned from my time there with our team. We didn't have a great performance but you can always learn from your losses.

I discuss choosing return sides and playing with strengths in the middle of the court with an example from one of our 4.5/4.5 teams who hadn't played together before. You'll also learn how to adjust your return position based on several factors, plus why I used Australian formation in the deuce court (and why I think I over-used it!).

2023 US Open men's doubles champion, Rajeev Ram joins the show for the second time. Rajeev shares his experience winning his third consecutive US Open alongside partner, Joe Salisbury.

I asked Rajeev about the 2023 season which has been a bit of a rollercoaster for him and Joe. One of my favorite parts of this episode is when Rajeev explains how his communication with Joe has improved and how he worked on that when he transitioned from singles to doubles earlier in his career.

We also discuss his relationship with coach Chris Eaton, Davis Cup, 2024 Olympic plans, and more. Towards the end, Rajeev shares advice for turning matches around, playing well in 10-point tiebreakers, and answers your questions from Instagram.

Daniel Nestor is one of the best doubles players ever. He has eight men's doubles grand slams, four mixed doubles major titles, an Olympic Gold Medal, and won the Tour Finals four times.

Daniel recently built an online course for club players that we discuss in this episode, along with his incredibly successful career. Daniel shares what made his most successful doubles teammates so good, including a decade-long partnership with Mark Knowles. I also ask him what made the Bryan Brothers so tough, who he had a 29-30 record against... not bad 😉

After that, we discuss several technical, strategic, and mental doubles topics from his new course, Mastering Doubles with Daniel Nestor  (use coupon tennistribe15).

  • How to serve & volley, a common half-volley mistake that I'm trying to fix on my backhand side
  • Why serve placement is more important than power
  • The mentality the server's partner should have that most club-level players unfortunately don't...
  • When to return down the line
  • Why it's so important to write things down (get a notebook!)

At the end, Daniel shares his favorite tournament, tennis book, and what needs to happen to make doubles more popular.

This is a conversation with the coach of ATP doubles star, Joe Salisbury, Dave O'Hare. I chatted with Dave in New York as his team go for a 3-peat of the US Open.

Listen to my previous conversation with Dave: https://www.thetennistribe.com/dave-ohare-interview/

Joe and Rajeev beat a team in the quarterfinals that they lost to a few weeks earlier. I asked Dave if they made any adjustments and how they approached playing the same team in two weeks. Dave also shares insights on the lob return, how he scouts their opponents live, and what the team does on their off day before their semifinal match. We then discuss their approach to the pre-match warmup.

You'll learn how one of the best doubles teams in the world prepares for big matches.

How to Use Direction to Win in Doubles

16 min
View

This is the 8th and final episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.

On every shot in doubles, you can choose which direction you want to hit the ball. But how do you know you're choosing the right direction?

Many club-level doubles players go down the line when they should go crosscourt, never change their serve location, or don't think about the best target for approach shots.

In this episode, I'll cover how to use direction to improve your doubles strategy for serving, returning, rallying, and net play. I'll share common mistakes I see, drills you can practice, and the ideal direction to hit the ball in different situations.

This is a rebroadcast of my interview with Gigi Fernandez from December 2020.

In this episode, Will talks with Gigi Fernandez, one of the greatest doubles players of all time.

Gigi won 17 major doubles titles on the professional tour and two Olympic Gold Medals. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010. Today, she specializes in teaching club and recreational adult doubles players.

This is a really rare opportunity where you get someone from the pro-level teaching at a recreational level or club level. In this conversation, you’ll learn about Gigi’s pro career and tons of doubles strategy. Gigi discusses the Gigi method, which has five different parts to it (below). She covers serve and return strategy, net play, how to defend against the lob, and the biggest mistakes she sees from club-level doubles players.

In doubles, choosing the correct return side is one of the most important decisions you'll make with your partner before each match. It's also one of the most misunderstood topics by club-level doubles players.

In this episode, I'll cover how to think about choosing return sides and share a recent example where I moved my partner to the ad side even though they preferred their forehand.

There are two BIG myths that you might be using when it comes to choosing return sides that I'll dispel as well.

This is a rebroadcast of my interview with Jorge Capestany from September 2021.

How well do you know your doubles partner?

In this episode, I speak with Jorge Capestany in great depth about this question. Jorge is one of the top tennis coaches in the US and one of only ten people in the world who are Master Professionals for the USPTA and PTR. He’s coached tennis for decades and thinks that understanding your partner might be the most important factor in winning matches for adult tennis players.

We cover 20 questions that you should know about your doubles partner, what your “traffic patterns” should be in between points, and a lot of doubles strategy. Jorge is also well-known for his tennis drills, so we discuss his favorite doubles drills and games as well.

This episode is a little different because I’ve never talked about team chemistry this much before, but it was eye-opening for me and will be for you too.

Today, I'm launching my new doubles course, 25 Winning Doubles Tactics. So in this episode, I wanted to share 3 tactics that I use in my own doubles matches and teach to club players like you.

The first two tactics are from the course where you can see real examples of each tactic being executed. They are called the Shoe Shine and the Sneaky Lob.

The last one is from a recent 9.0 mixed doubles match where my partner and I made what turned out to be a fantastic adjustment to come back after dropping the first set 7-6(4).

Knowing how to execute these tactics is great but recognizing when to use them is just as important.

My new course is 30% off through Sunday, August 6:

This is an interview with WTA doubles player, Demi Schuurs. Demi has a career-high ranking of #7 in the world, including 17 doubles titles on tour.

Demi is also a top returner and net player, making her one of my favorite players to watch. She has a very old-school doubles game, constantly moving forward and taking away time from her opponents.

In this conversation, we discuss her story – she grew up in the Netherlands, how to play with different doubles partners, including her current one, Desirae Krawczyk, and strategy.

You’ll learn:

  • Demi’s approach to the return & volley (she’s one of the best at this tactic).
  • Different tactics for returning against I-formation.
  • How to develop quick reactions & volleys at the net, including several drills she recommends.
  • Why she sometimes stands way out wide, behind the doubles alley, to serve.

Demi also shares some potential plans and goals for after her pro tennis career. This is a fun interview because you get a little bit of everything from Demi including personal stories, life as a pro doubles player, and tactics & strategy.

This is an interview with ATP tennis coach, Rob Morgan. Rob has coached tennis for over two decades and currently coaches world #1 doubles player Wesley Koolhof, who just won Wimbledon alongside Neal Skupski.

I ask Rob about his role on their team and what it took to win Wimbledon. Wesley and Neal have been the best team in the world for over a year but hadn't won a Grand Slam until last week. You'll find out what they improved this year to get over the hump and win their first major title.

We also discuss:

  • The one thing Rob has all his players do when he first starts coaching them (something he says he's never shared)
  • How to beat a team that lobs or pushes for club-level players
  • The most neglected shot for club doubles players
  • 3 questions you should ask a new doubles partner

Rob seems to prioritize communication in doubles, and I didn't realize how deep communication could go on and off the court until this conversation. We discuss the ways doubles partners can better understand and help each other out before, during, and after matches. This episode provides a great window into coaching at the top level of our sport but also provides useful info that can help your doubles game.

We discuss this volley drill video around minute 44:31 in the podcast episode: https://youtu.be/MsZRyI9vTyQ

This is the 7th episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.

Depth is more important than most people realize. But it's not always best to hit the ball deep. When should we focus on depth? And when is it okay to hit the ball short?

In this episode, I cover how the depth of your shots relates to serving, returning, rallying, and net play in doubles. You'll learn:

  • My favorite drill to improve your 2nd serve
  • The best times to NOT hit the ball deep
  • Why return depth is MORE IMPORTANT than pace

This is an interview with Philip Farmer who has coached on the ATP & WTA tours for over two decades.

Phil has one of the smartest doubles minds in the world and has coached four different players to a world #1 doubles ranking including the Bryan Brothers, Corina Morariu, and most recently, Austin Krajicek, who I interviewed last week. He's also coached a number of singles players including Sam Querrey and John Isner.

However, in this episode, we focus heavily on how a club-level player can improve because Phil also works with adult club players near his home in Dallas, Texas.

You’ll learn:

  • How Phil prepared Austin & Ivan Dodig during their 2023 Roland Garros title run
  • What Phil has helped Austin improve over the last few years that lead him to ATP #1 in doubles
  • How a club-level player can add the lob return to their game (even if you only have 4-6 hours per week of court time)
  • The best time to poach or use serve formations during a match (especially if you're new to both)

We also discuss how pro doubles has changed since Phil coached the Bryan Brothers from '03-'05 from more traditional formation and deep volleys to I-formation, lobs, and angles.

This is an interview with world #1 doubles player and 2023 Roland Garros champion, Austin Krajicek.

Austin recently rose to the top of the doubles rankings with his first major title, and he joined me from London where he was beginning his grass court season (he won the Queen's Club Championships a few days after our conversation). Austin and his partner, Ivan Dodig, lost in the Roland Garros final in 2022, so I ask Austin to compare that run to his recent title in Paris.

We also discuss:

  • What Austin has improved over the past 2-3 years that helped him move from a ranking of 40 at the end of 2021 to #1 today.
  • How he spends his off days at tournaments, as well as his off time outside of tennis.
  • Advantages of being a left-handed doubles player and advice for righties who are playing with lefties for the first time.

My takeaway from this conversation is that hard work and details matter. At one point Austin said "there are no secrets", and he's right. Sustained effort and improving the little things have helped him move to #1 in the world.

This is a great episode for doubles fans who want to get to know Austin and adult players who want to learn from the best.

In part 2 of our listener Q&A, I answer questions about volleying cross court vs down the line, choosing return sides, choosing return tactics, and more.

(Find Part 1 of our Q&A here)

These questions were submitted from 3.0 to 4.5 doubles players from around the world.

  • When should I volley crosscourt vs down the line?
  • Should the stronger player return from the ad side? What about a lefty & righty? (This is one of the biggest myths in doubles!)
  • I'm having trouble against teams who rush the net. What should I do?
  • I can't decide if I should hit a topspin, slice, bunt, or lob return. Any advice?
  • My partner (at baseline) and I (at net) keep getting beat through the middle. Who should cover it?

I have advice for all of these players, including further resources to learn more and continue improving below.

There are certain shots in doubles that you need to hit the ball high over the net to buy yourself some time. Alternatively, there are times when it's best to keep the ball low.

I'll cover the general strategy for using height in doubles, as well as my favorite tactics that involve height to win more points.

  • How can you use height on your serve to force return errors?
  • Is it better to hit your groundstrokes low or high over the net?
  • When is the best time to lob vs hit low at the net player?

This episode includes a series of post-match interviews from the Charleston Open. We spoke with the eventual champions, Desirae Krawczyk and Danielle Collins, after their semifinal victory. We also talked with finalists, Giuliana Olmos and Ena Shibahara after their close loss in the finals.

You'll get some strategic insights from these players' analysis of their matches as well as some adjustments they made during the matches.

  • How to adjust after you win the 1st set but lose the 2nd?
  • Why does Ena Shibahara always smile?
  • How to handle the opponents using more I-formation?

Danielle and Desirae's interviews were recorded separately so it was fascinating to see how they independently viewed the match after the 3rd set victory.

This is the 4th episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.

When are the best times to hit with more power in doubles? More importantly, when should we hit the ball SLOW?!

Personally, I think power is overrated in doubles. I'd rather you hit with depth, or adjust your position than hit the ball hard. However, this is an important episode because most people do use power at the wrong times.

It's important to know when you should use more power, and crucially, when to use off-pace shots. In this episode, I'll cover both.

You'll also learn:

  • Why hitting with power should be a secondary tactic.
  • Why using power against pushers is a losing strategy (and what to do instead).
  • My favorite times to use power to get a free point.

Knowing when to dial up the MPH vs slowing it down will help you give away fewer free points and start playing smarter doubles.

This is the 3rd episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.

How can you adjust your position to help you win in doubles?

If you're like me, then you're slowly losing your quickness and movement ability. As we get older, position becomes even more important on the doubles court.

In this episode, I cover exactly where to stand.

  • Serve formations: Regular, I-formation, Australian
  • Returning: vs 1st & 2nd serve, 2-back formation
  • Rallying: How to avoid backhands & help your weak partner
  • Net Position: How to cover the lob

Learning how to position yourself properly, alongside your doubles partner, will help you expose opponents' weaknesses and play on your terms more often.

How to Use Movement to Win in Doubles

25 min
View

This is the 2nd episode in our 8-part series on doubles strategy.

I'm going to share with you how to think about different aspects of doubles to help you create a better game plan and win more matches.

How can you use movement to win in doubles?

There are two ways you can move on the tennis court. Forward & backward, and side to side (laterally). Both are important, but many players move the wrong way or don't move at all when they should.

This episode will help you use your movement to force more errors, get into your opponent's head, and help your partner hold serve more easily. You'll also learn one of my favorite movements out of the I-formation when my partner is serving.

In this interview, we chat with Pam Shriver, a former player with 22 career doubles majors, and a renowned commentator on ESPN and Tennis Channel.

Additionally, she is a top-30 WTA singles coach, coaching Donna Vekic, and a mother. Pam was a dominant force on the doubles tour, having won 111 titles in total.

During the conversation, we delve into several topics related to doubles, including the state of doubles and some semi-controversial comments around the current level of ATP doubles, the dominance of the Czechs, and net play strategies. We also touch on Pam’s busy schedule and how she manages it.

Pam and I also discuss:

  • What makes the Charleston Open a special tournament.
  • How she feels she has helped Donna Vekic improve to be a top player.
  • What her upcoming schedule looks like for the clay and grass seasons.

Tennis Tribe writer, Hanlon Walsh, joins me for this conversation from Charleston. Pam was generous with her time, and very open and honest with us. For such a big name in our sport, she was really easy to talk to. I think you’ll enjoy it.

This is a conversation with Danielle Collins from the 2023 Charleston Open where she and Desirae Krawczyk won the doubles title.

Danielle was a singles finalist in the 2022 Australian Open, a doubles semifinalist at Wimbledon that same year, and reached a career-high in singles of #7 in the world in 2022.

This episode is a little different because it’s the first time I’ve had a “singles player” on the show to discuss doubles.

Danielle and I discuss:

  • Why Danielle is playing more doubles alongside her singles schedule, and how it helps her singles game.
  • How playing in an 80+ doubles league as an 8-year-old helped her improve.
  • Her 2022 Australian Open singles run compared to her doubles semifinal run at Wimbledon.
  • Her experiences in college tennis where she played at Florida before transferring to Virginia (she won 2 NCAA singles titles there).

You will also learn why she loves the camaraderie in doubles, what she is working on, her favorite tournaments, a book recommendation, and how to make doubles more popular.

This is a conversation with Leylah Fernandez and Taylor Townsend from the Charleston Open. I spoke with them after their round 1 win.

We discussed what's been working well for them over the past several weeks - they took the Czechs to 3 sets and made the finals in Miami. I also asked Taylor what specifically has made the new partnership succeed so far (they had never spoken to each other!) and their plans for the rest of the year - very exciting news for doubles fans!

At the end, Leylah shares something she's learned from Taylor on the doubles court that is great advice for players at any skill level.

This is an interview with Dan Kiernan, a former #1 British doubles player, the coach of top 5 ATP doubles team, Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara, founder of SOTO Tennis Academy in Spain, and the host of the Control the Controllables tennis podcast.

Dan knows how to develop players so this is a great episode for anyone who wants to start improving their game faster. You’ll notice he starts with principles, then works his way towards strategy and technical skills from there. I ask him about his inspiration to start the podcast, his work with top doubles players, and his tennis principles.

Dan also shares:

  • His thoughts on teaching club-level players to stop guarding the doubles alley.
  • What type of player should be more aggressive on returns and which ones should be more consistent.
  • His favorite drills for getting comfortable at the net, including one “illegal” drill I used with my high school team after this conversation.

You will hear how Dan got involved in tennis, loads of doubles strategy and knowledge, and, of course, how he thinks we can make doubles more popular.

This is the first episode in an eight-part series on doubles strategy. I'm going to share with you how to think about different aspects of doubles to help you create a better game plan and win more matches.

How can you use time to win in doubles?

There are two ways to think about time in doubles.

  1. You want to take away time from your opponents (attack).
  2. You want to buy time for yourself (defend).

I'll share how to take away time and different in-match scenarios where I like to rush the opponent. You'll also learn how to buy time for yourself and the best times to do so.

This is an interview with Bob Moran, the tournament director for one of the most successful tournaments on the WTA Tour, the Charleston Open.

We talk about what makes the tournament special, the fan experience, the player field, and how to grow your local tennis community.

Bob and I also discuss:

  • The recent renovations that were done at the site.
  • What the tournament does to grow its relationship with players.
  • Why building youth programs is so important to tennis.

We had this conversation only two weeks before the Charleston Open so you’ll get to hear how a TD prepares leading up to a tournament, as well as how seriously he takes the fan experience (all kids get free admission!), and what we can do to make doubles more popular.

One of the most requested podcast guests to date has been Caty McNally. She is up to a career high #75 in singles and top 20 WTA doubles player. As a back-to-back US Open doubles finalist, you can learn a lot by studying Caty’s game.

Tennis Tribe writer, Hanlon Walsh, and I finally got to chat with Caty at the ATX Open between her first and second round of singles. This is a brief but insightful conversation.

You'll learn:

  • The difference between Caty in 2021 & 2023.
  • How Caty adjusts to playing with different doubles partners. She has 13 WTA & ITF titles with 10 different partners.
  • How doubles has helped her singles game.
  • What makes her defensive volleys so good (funny answer here!)

Hopefully we can have Caty on for a round two at some point.

This is a conversation with #89 ranked WTA doubles player, Ingrid Neel. I chatted with Ingrid at the ATX Open after her first round win. She went on to win in the quarterfinals and hasn’t played her semifinal match at the time of this writing.

Ingrid shares insights about her round 1 match, where she teamed up with Olivia Tjandramulia for the first time. I asked her how they handle winning in convincing fashion – they won 6-3 6-1.

We also discussed:

  • How you play against someone who you know so well
  • Playing with a new partner, getting to know their game style, and what to do before your first match.
  • Her ideal doubles partner’s game style (hint: Bryan Bros)
  • How we can make doubles more popular

Ingrid has a very fun personality with a great strategic mindset that I know you’ll learn a lot from. I also spoke with her and her partner after their quarterfinal win, which will be published soon.

In this episode, we chatted with two rising American WTA stars, Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery. These two 18-year-olds had just won their R1 match at the ATX Open and we discuss how they adjusted their strategy in the 10-point tiebreaker.

They also recently won an ITF tournament in Orlando, so we ask them what’s been clicking lately. You’ll get some insights into how a team builds chemistry on and off the court as well as how players manage their schedule as they fight to get into the top 100.

We also discuss:

  • What they think makes the other a good doubles partner
  • What boundaries they’ve learned to cross and not cross
  • How their game styles fit together, including why Ashlyn thinks Robin’s “leftiness” helps
  • Their biggest WTA win to date

I expect you’ll be hearing their names more and more in the coming years on the singles and doubles court as they continue to improve.

What is the best way to approach the net in doubles?

There are certain times you might want to avoid the baseline rallies. Maybe you're in an unfavorable matchup from the baseline, you need to put pressure on the opponents, or you're simply more comfortable at the net.

Regardless of the reason, there is a lot you want to consider when approaching the net in doubles.

  • Is it better to hit deep or short?
  • Can I approach with a lob?
  • Should I always hit to the baseline player?
  • How often should I hit at the net player?
  • What if I don't like half volleys?

In this episode, I answer all those questions and more.

This is an interview with Top-50 doubles players Nate Lammons and Jackson Withrow. I got to sit down with them after their semifinal win at the Dallas Open to talk doubles.

This is a brief, but really fun interview, that will give you insights into how top doubles teams think. Nate and Jackson have been one of the top teams so far in 2023, making two finals already, after a very strong fall last season. I could tell their team chemistry is off the charts.

Nate and Jackson share:

  • How they communicate during a match and make adjustments.
  • What has helped them improve and become a top doubles team worldwide.

This is an interview with a Former World No. 3 doubles player, 2-time Grand Slam champion, and Top-50 singles player, Vania King.

Vania shares key moments and what led to them during her career, the unique way that she made adjustments (especially to her kick serve), and what went right in 2010 for her two majors. She won Wimbledon and the US Open back-to-back in 2010 with doubles partner Yaroslava Shvedova.

I also ask Vania about:

  • Her unique approach to improvement that led to her first singles title and her two doubles Grand Slams.
  • What was going through her mind & some behind-the-scenes stories during her Wimbledon title.
  • How to deal with parents/coaches that push kids too hard.

You will hear how she got into tennis, a trend she has seen in club-level doubles, a teaser for a possible second episode to discuss strategy and her foundation, and what we can do to make doubles more popular.

In 2021, the USTA bumped my rating up from a 4.5 to a 5.0.

In 2022, I think I improved even more.

In this episode, I share 3 lessons that helped me get better in 2022 so that you can use them to work on your own doubles game.

You'll learn:

  • A simple tip that made volleys MUCH easier for me (and more effective).
  • How off-court training improved my forehand, backhand, and serve.
  • 3 specific shots I'm practicing that I've started using more in matches.
