What is the best strategy to beat a lefty in doubles?

Last week, I talked about how to play with a left-handed player in doubles. Today, we're discussing how to beat them.

Left-handed players can create all sorts of issues on the doubles court, but there are tactics and tendencies you can take advantage of when playing against a lefty & righty combo.

Here are a few questions I answer in this episode.

• I can't return the lefty serve. What do I do?

If you're right-handed, how can you effectively play with a left-handed partner in doubles?

If you're left-handed, how can you best strategize with your right-handed partner who rarely plays with a lefty?

In this episode, I'll cover how to best play doubles with a lefty and righty combo:

• Which side should each player return on?
• How can you take advantage of the lefty slice serve?

The #1 doubles team in the world for the past few years have undoubtedly been the Czech team of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova. Hanlon and I got to sit down with them after their semifinals win at the WTA Finals to talk about doubles.

This is an interview with Nick Monroe, a recently retired ATP doubles player, and three-time podcast guest, to discuss the new All American Cup.

What is the All American Cup? It’s a team tennis tournament featuring the best American male players, led by captains Bob & Mike Bryan.

Nick had the idea for the tournament, which will be hosted in San Antonio, during the middle of COVID when players were trying to find ways to compete.

The tournament will start on November 10 with several events and culminate on the 13th with a Laver Cup-style format.

You’ll learn what I am looking for if I get to watch my opponent before our match.

 Today we discuss the framework a 3.5 player can use to improve their game and become a 4.0 player. Still, the principles in this episode apply to anyone looking to improve their level.

Demi Schuurs and Desirae Krawczyk discuss serve and net strategy before a point at the 2022 Indian Wells Masters.

Note: 3.5 & 4.0 are level-based ratings created by the United States Tennis Association.

• USTA describes a 3.5 player as: “This player has achieved stroke dependability with directional control on moderate shots, but still lacks depth, variety and the ability to alter the distance of shots. The effective use of lobs, overheads, approach shots, and volleys is limited. This player is more comfortable at the net, has improved court awareness, and is developing teamwork in doubles.”
  
  
• They describe a 4.0 player as: “This player has dependable strokes with directional control and the ability to alter depth of shots on both forehand and backhand sides during moderately paced play. This player also has the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots, and volleys with success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving. Points may be lost due to impatience. Teamwork in doubles is evident.”

I have opinions on the differences based on my experience watching and playing at the 4.5 and 5.0 levels over the last 5+ years around the USTA Texas Section. The framework I go over in this episode comes from experience and learning from some of the best coaches and players in the world.

 All of the time I play people who have a bigger serve, better forehand, and more technically-sound volleys than me.

If we played a singles match they would win, if a coach fed us balls they would look much better, and shot-for-shot I could never beat them.

But, I don’t have to. Too many of these players manage to beat themselves. Maybe you are that player.

If you find yourself making too many errors, especially when it comes to shot selection, then this episode could raise your NTRP rating by .5 or more.

During this episode, we’ll focus on five scenarios where you can start making fewer mistakes and winning more points.

A few of the questions answered include:

• What should my first serve strategy be in doubles?
• What should I do with a short, wide ball?
• Do I always need to hit volleys at the opposing net player?
• How do I take advantage of transition volleys?

Ultimately, to win more tennis matches, it’s important to play high-percentage rather than hitting hard. After listening, you’ll better understand what to do in key doubles situations.

When should you hit down-the-line in doubles?

One of the biggest mistakes club-level players make is going for too much or hitting too often down-the-line. An important part of any player’s strategy is shot selection, and that includes when to use the down-the-line shot.

During this episode, we’ll focus on 1-up 1-back scenarios returning from the deuce and ad courts, as well as some tips on when to hit down-the-line during a rally.

A few of the questions answered include:

• Where should I aim when I hit down the line?
• What is the best time to return down the line?
• Is the down-the-line lob a good tactic?
• How often should I hit down the line?

Ultimately, it’s important to weigh your own and your partners’ strengths and weaknesses and make strategic decisions based on how the opponents are playing. After listening, you’ll better understand when to hit down-the-line so you stop giving away free points and start forcing more errors.

 How do we play better doubles in the wind?

Since outdoor tennis is never perfect, knowing how to play in the wind can be a strategic advantage for you or simply annoy you like it does most people.

I’ve played several mixed doubles matches over the last few months in very windy conditions. I’ve made different adjustments each time that have helped me play better which I reveal in this episode. 

There certainly aren’t any hard and fast rules on how to play tennis in the wind, but there are some of the best practices.

Ultimately, it’s important to weigh your own and your partners’ strengths and weaknesses, take into consideration what I talk about, and make strategic decisions with your partner. After listening, you’ll look forward to playing in the wind and feel more confident with a winning game plan.

Today we discuss the framework a 4.0 player can use to improve their game and become a 4.5 player. Still, the principles in this episode apply to anyone looking to improve their level. 

Note: 4.0 & 4.5 are level-based ratings created by the United States Tennis Association.

• USTA describes a 4.0 player as: “This player has dependable strokes with directional control and the ability to alter depth of shots on both forehand and backhand sides during moderately paced play. This player also has the ability to use lobs, overheads, approach shots, and volleys with success. This player occasionally forces errors when serving. Points may be lost due to impatience. Teamwork in doubles is evident.”
• They describe a 4.5 player as: “This player can vary the use of pace and spins, has effective court coverage, can control depth of shots, and is able to develop game plans according to strengths and weaknesses. This player can hit the first serve with power and accuracy and can place the second serve. This player tends to overhit on difficult shots. Aggressive net play is common in doubles.”

I have my own opinions on the differences based on my experience watching and playing at the 4.5 level over the last 5+ years around the USTA Texas Section. The framework that I go over in this episode comes from that experience and learning from some of the best coaches and players in the world.

 In this interview, we chat with tennis media personality, Blair Henley. If you can think of it, post-match interviews, player introductions, trivia, writing, etc…, Blair does it.

Blair has interviewed Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, and more. She’s also been featured by Tennis Magazine, ESPN, WTA, and dozens of other outlets.

This was a special episode, as I was joined by fellow Tennis Tribe writer Hanlon Walsh who wrote a Tennis Media Roundtable article on Blair in 2020. You’ll gather some insights into what it takes to get into the tennis media business, what’s it’s like to interview top players, and what a day is like for Blair.

We talk about the Dallas Open, Blair’s tennis story, and, of course, how to make doubles more popular. In addition to many more ideas, Blair had several interesting thoughts on doubles:

• She believes that contrary to popular opinion, a lot of people really enjoy watching doubles tennis.
• It is a lot like women’s sports in that it doesn’t get the platform it needs to prove its worth (great analogy here).

I recently got to spend some time chatting with top 100 ATP singles coach, Marc Lucero. He coaches American pro tennis player, Steve Johnson (who is also a great doubles player).

This was recorded from the food court area at the Dallas Open where Steve was playing.

You’ll gather some insights into what it takes to coach in the pros, as well as some practice strategies from an experienced player and coach.

ATP doubles player, Nick Monroe, returns to the podcast (listen to my previous episode with Nick Monroe). This time, I got to sit down with Nick in our hotel lobby during the 2021 World Team Tennis season for a quick conversation.

Nick turned pro in 2004 and has since won four doubles titles. He reached a career-high ranking of #30 in the world, and in 2021, he made it to the round of 16 at the Australian Open.

We talk about World TeamTennis, the benefits of coaching during matches, his offseason plans in Austin, TX, and who he plans to play with during the 2022 season. I also ask him about how he handles deciding points as well as mixed doubles. Plus, Nick discusses the art of serve and return in doubles and reveals his matchday routine.

In this episode, I got to spend some time chatting with the new ATP Dallas Open tournament director Peter Lebedevs.

You’ll gather some insights into what it takes to run a pro tournament, as well as some doubles strategies from an Aussie who has coached at every level of tennis.

After trying several sports as a kid, Peter grew to love tennis, and that love turned into several years of playing and coaching. Following this, Peter would work his way through the ranks to become the tournament director at the Memphis Open, Atlanta Open, and New York Open.

I knew Peter from my childhood when I was a ball boy at the Memphis Open. We were voted the best ball kids on tour 😉

We talk about the Dallas Open, his tennis story, and, of course, how to make doubles more popular. In addition to this, we talk doubles strategy:

• Why high percentage tennis is winning tennis.
• Where you should go with your serve more often.
• The toughest volley in tennis.
• A very important lesson he learned from Wayne Bryan.

PS. Peter also makes a prediction on the Novak Djokovic – Australian Open situation early in the episode. (The episode was recorded on January 6, 2022, when Djokovic was still in holding.)

In this conversation, we talk about how she got into tennis, when she decided to turn pro, how to communicate better with your doubles partner, and more.

I also ask Asia what makes her overheads so freaking good. They were the best I saw at WTT, male or female.

After that, we talk doubles strategy. Asia provides some intriguing points on serve placement and poaching, where she likes to return, and how to decide when to call off poaches due to poor returns. She also shares why you should always aim at the opponent when returning down the line in doubles.

In this episode, you’ll get insights from a former pro player who is still a part of our sport as one of the best tennis analysts on TV. Nicolas Pereira is a former top 100 singles player and top 50 doubles player from Venezuela.

In this conversation, we talk about his story growing up in Venezuela, how he made it to the pro tour, and what makes a good TV analyst for tennis (including the differences between the English & Latin markets).

Today you get to hear from one of the great doubles advocates of our sport. Luke Jensen is a former professional tennis player with 10 career doubles titles including the 1993 French Open title. Today, he coaches the New York Empire, is a TV analyst, and has a some innovative ideas on how to grow tennis (especially doubles).

In this hour long conversation from the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, Luke and I discuss his career, doubles strategy, how to play with a lefty, how to beat John McEnroe, and why Roger, Rafa, Novak, and Serena are not the GOAT.

The passion for tennis you’ll hear from Luke is second to none. We spend a lot of time discussing how to change the game to make it better for the fans and more doubles friendly. He explains why he thinks:

• Tennis needs to get rid of the “best of 5” format, play no-ad, and play lets.
• Pro tournaments should require players to play two events per tournament.
• Singles rankings should be replaced by a “tennis ranking.”
• Pickleball can help your tennis game.

At the end, Luke tells us a story about shark fishing with Andre Agassi.
