 Find out how one adjustment on my serve helped me beat a player I always struggled to win against. I'll show you my thought process behind each decision I made that lead me to this new, winning serve strategy. 

Then I'll discuss another match I played recently where I cracked my racquet. My partner and I got demolished 6-0, 6-2. In this case, I had been on vacation for two weeks previously and only had one week to prepare. Needless to say, I didn't prepare properly. I'll talk about what went wrong, and what I would do differently next time.

How well do you know your doubles partner? In this episode, I speak with Jorge Capestany, who has  coached tennis for decades and thinks that understanding your partner might be the most important factor to winning matches for adult tennis players.  

Jorge is one of the top tennis coaches in the US, and only one of ten people in the world who are Master Professionals for the USPTA & PTR. 

We cover 20 questions that you should know about your doubles partner, what your "traffic patterns" should be in between points, and a lot of strategy. Jorge is also well-known for his tennis drills, so we discuss his favorite doubles drills and games as well. 

This episode is a little different because I've never talked about team chemistry this much before, but it was eye-opening for me and will be for you too.

In this episode, I interview Jack Broudy from Broudy Tennis. Jack is a tennis player, coach, author, speaker, and inventor. He's coached college national champions, top US juniors, and touring pro players including Sam Querrey, Steve Johnson, and Coco Vandeweghe when they were rising juniors.

Jack has a unique (but incredibly effective) teaching methodology called the Non-Linear Tennis System. He teaches every stroke from this foundational principle so players can learn the serve, groundstrokes, and volleys faster and hit the ball effortlessly. Rather than the typical mechanical teaching style most coaches use, Jack believes the body should be fluid and move together for each shot.

We discuss how he got started in tennis, common doubles strategy mistakes he sees from club players, and technique. Jack shows us how to hit volleys with better depth and pace, as well as problems with the way many 3.0-3.5 level players hit groundstrokes and how to correct it.

Older 40+ players are crafty, have more control, and never miss. Young 18-39 players are fast and hit the ball hard!

This, of course, is an overgeneralization, but it’s helpful to think about how to beat each of these types of doubles teams.

In this episode, I tell a story from college of a teammate who thought smacking overheads from the baseline was a good strategy for him. Our coach taught him that it wasn’t through a clever drill. We’ll use the lesson he learned to figure out how to beat a crafty, consistent, 40+ or 55+ team. Then I’ll talk about strategy for beating younger doubles teams in the 18-39-year-old range who hit with more power.

In doubles, getting to the net is a winning strategy. But sometimes it pays to play two-back in doubles.

• Why would we want to play two-back?
• What are the scenarios where it makes sense to play two-back?
• What is the best strategy when my partner and I are both at the baseline?

In this episode, I analyze all those questions and more.

Learn the best times to play two-back on the return, including an alternative strategy. I also share a story of when I successfully played two-back on my own serve which I almost never recommend. At the end, I discuss different scenarios of playing two-back vs two-up or one-up and one-back.

This episode definitely requires you to visualize the court a bit, but the two back strategy doesn't get talked about enough so I hope this helps your game.

In this episode, I speak with Christo van Rensburg. He was a part of the #1 doubles team in the world with Paul Annacone and won the 1985 Australian Open Doubles title.

In this conversation, we dive deep into Christo's story including two moments that changed his life. I also ask him how doubles in the '80s and '90s compares to today. After that, we talk a lot about communication on the doubles court between partners, as well as how coaches should be communicating with their students.

We also talk about doubles strategy. Christo makes an argument for the better player to return from the deuce court. I ask him the biggest mistakes he sees club level players making in doubles, and a lot more.

In this episode, I talk with Cyndy and Dan Lobb. This is a unique episode because you probably don't know Cyndy and Dan from the ATP or WTA tour ;) I wanted to have them on to share their story. In this episode, I talk with ATP doubles player Rajeev Ram. He is number 15 in the world in doubles right now, and last year reached a career-high of number 5.

When I catch up with him he is in his hotel room in Australia on a 14-day quarantine. He is one of the players who is not allowed to leave his hotel room at all for fourteen days.

We talk about how he manages to train while he is stuck in his hotel room 24/7, and then dive into his career and doubles strategy.

We discuss World Team Tennis, how he got started playing tennis, his time in college playing at Illinois, his pro career, July 10, 2009 when he played four ATP matches in one day, before diving into doubles strategy. I ask him:

• How he game plans before a match.
• How he and Joe Salisbury make in-match adjustments.
• What his biggest strength & weakness is on the doubles court.
• When he likes to use signals vs talking (while serving).
• and a lot more…

I interviewed Nicole Melichar last summer, so this is her second appearance on the show.

In this episode, I catch Nicole from Melbourne, a few weeks before the Australian Open. She is in quarantine and is only allowed to leave her room for five hours per day.

Last summer when I spoke to her she was number 19 in the world, now she is all the way up to number 11. We talk about how quarantine is going in Melbourne and what her plans are for 2021 - she is playing with a new partner this year.

We also talk about her fall season where she did really well. She made the final of the US Open and Cincinnati Open, won in Strasbourg, and made the semis of the French Open.

After that, we dive deep into doubles strategy.

 In this episode, Will talks with Gigi Fernandez, one of the greatest doubles players of all time.

Gigi won 17 major doubles titles on the professional tour and two Olympic Gold Medals. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2010. Today, she specializes in teaching club and recreational adult doubles players.

Will chats with former ATP doubles player, Eric Butorac who has ATP 18 doubles titles, reached a career-high of #17 in the world, and played Division III tennis. During the conversation, they discuss Eric's Ted Talk where he shares his story about making it from D3 to the ATP tour.

 This is the first episode in a four-part series on doubles strategy. In this episode, I discuss the foundations and fundamentals that you need to know to become a good doubles player. I also teach you how to be mentally tougher on the doubles court, including how to deal with anger and how we should be viewing each point. You'll also learn what you should do between points to improve your in-match strategy. Then I briefly share the role or job of all four players on the doubles court.

Jeff is the coach of the #1 men’s doubles team in the world, Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal. Jeff is a former ATP player has won multiple doubles titles. He has coached on the pro tour since 2013 and helped Farah and Cabal win the 2019 Wimbledon and US Open.

Nicole won the Wimbledon 2018 mixed doubles title. She also was a finalist in women’s doubles that same year. Nicole has been ranked as high as #12 in the world and is currently the #19 ranked WTA doubles player. She has one title so far in 2020.
