TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Double Your Leads With These 7 Hacks
  • [00:33] Hack 1: Use the most relevant lead magnet.
  • [00:38] A lead magnet is an ebook, a checklist, etc.
  • [01:07] Hack 2: Remarket visitors to your site.
  • [01:15] Show them a landing page with the opposite pitch of your main landing page.
  • [01:33] Remarketing is effective, because people come to your site via different pages.
  • [01:55] Hack 3: Use a pop-up tool to collect leads.
  • [02:02] Great pop-up tools: Hello Bar and Opt-in Monster.
  • [02:21] Hack 4: If you are doing B2B, use LinkedIn’s pre-populating forms.
  • [02:48] Your conversion rate will go up, because it fills out the form for the potential customer, saving them time and effort.
  • [02:52] Hack 5: Use chat bots.
  • [03:02] You can use Facebook’s free tool, Intercom, Drift, or Many Chat.
  • [03:33] Hack 6: Get people to subscribe or opt-in via push notifications.

In episode #609, Eric and Neil discuss whether you really need more backlinks to outrank your competition. Tune in to hear what you can do to improve your ranking.

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: Do You Really Need More Backlinks to Outrank Your Competition?
  • [00:34] Eric doesn’t think you need more backlinks.
  • [00:54] Sometimes, a wikipedia post will rank higher than others because they have domain authority.
  • [01:15] However, Eric and Neil don’t even check their domain authority anymore.
  • [01:21] When you’re starting off, this is something you need to check, but once you are more established, it doesn’t matter.
  • [01:41] Neither Eric or Neil even knows how many backlinks they have.
  • [02:15] To win business, Eric’s company will show companies how many backlinks they have as compared to their competitors.
  • [02:30] Once you’ve been working with a customer for a year or two, you produce good content, build natural links, create videos, create podcasts, and you no longer check on backlinks.
  • [03:00] The simplest way to outrank your competitors: go to Google Search Console, check your URL’s with a lot of impressions, but low clicks, then re-write it by fleshing it out and adding in pertinent keywords. You will find that your ranking for those keywords will increase and you will outrank your competitors without having to build more links.
  • [03:30] Sometimes, checking backlinks is based merely on ego, as nothing annoys people more than their competitors having more backlinks and higher domain authority.
  • [03:55] Clickflow is a great tool that shows you when your impression count is too low. This means you should improve the title or meta-description.
  • [04:16] Sometimes, adding popular keywords to your title will help boost your ranking.
  • [04:42] That’s it for today!

In episode #608, Eric and Neil discuss what you should do in light of the fact that email marketing is dying. Tune in to hear what avenues you should pursue to mitigate the loss of traffic through email marketing.

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: Email Marketing Is Dying (and Here's What You Should Do Next)
  • [00:34] Everyone thinks no one uses email anymore, which is a false assumption, especially if you work in the corporate world.
  • [00:55] Although email marketing is dying, that is only for the younger demographics.
  • [01:15] Email isn’t as effective as it used to be, but as long as you leverage all the other channels, you can still do well.
  • [01:40] Combine emails, push notifications, and chat bots; you will get back some of the traffic you lost through email marketing.
  • [02:00] Neil spoke to someone who works in Dubai and he still makes all his money through email marketing to an older audience.
  • [02:21] Eric loves to use Subscribers.com, Many Chat, and text messaging to market to a younger audience.
  • [02:58] Sly Broadcast is a great tool that Eric loves.
  • [03:18] This tool will allow you to drop a voicemail into someone’s inbox without having the phone ring.
  • [03:40] Cut the fat on the tools, though. Too many tools spreads your focus too thin.
  • [04:25] Neil’s team uses fewer than 10 tools internally.
  • [04:32] They use Skype, Google Analytics, Google Search Console, AHREFS, SEMRush, Subscribers, Hello Bar, Hubspot, and possibly one or two more at the most.
  • [05:00] Don’t go beyond ten tools, because it is overwhelming.
  • [05:15] If you want to do well and remain actionable, using too many tools will prevent that.
  • [05:30] That’s it for today!

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: We Bought $100,000 Worth of Backlinks (and Here's What Happened Next)
  • [00:40] Eric and Neil no longer buy links, but did so during the earlier parts of their careers.
  • [00:55] They purchased random sites with no relevance to their industries.
  • [01:30] Link buying is bigger than it used to be and Google isn’t banning any of the purchased sites.
  • [01:55] Sites will spend $100,000 on backlinks, but they are not getting the traffic that they used to.
  • [02:02] Google is now using a lot of factors such as brand queries, user metrics, on-page SEO, Hummingbird, and Rank Brain.
  • [02:45] Paid advertising is the biggest trend right now and it’s working.
  • [03:00] Buying links is the old SEO, instead you should think about ways to repurpose and create great content.
  • [03:26] Neil uses blogging, video, and podcasting as marketing methods.
  • [03:31] This all can lead to bigger and better opportunities.

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Outrank Your Competitors by Copying
  • [00:53] Single Grain went from 4000 visitors/month to 100,000 visitors/month by copying great ideas from his competitors.
  • [01:20] Take the best techniques, posts, podcasts and spin it to make it more useful.
  • [01:36] Dr. Axe is a website that crushed the competition.
  • [01:58] Dr. Axe checked which of their competitors’ URLS were getting the most traffic, had the fewest backlinks, and then wrote better versions of those pages.
  • [02:57] This got them to 20 Million visitors per month.
  • [03:34] AHREFS is one of Eric and Neil’s favorite tools. It can do a content gap analysis, which will help you see where others are failing. Fill in that gap!
  • [04:25] Neil wrote The Beginners’ Guide to Online Marketing. It cost him around $20,000 or $30,000.
  • [04:51] It was a combination of the strongest pieces out there; he made it more detailed, easier to digest, and combined text with infographics to make it more appealing.
  • [05:05] A lot of people are doing 10x or 100x content.
  • [05:20] Think how you can apply Neil’s techniques to your product or service in your industry.
  • [05:52] If you continually create new content on the same topic, Google won’t know which page to rank higher, so they won’t rank them well at all.
  • [06:07] Make sure your pages are more detailed and don’t repeat content.

In episode #605, Eric and Neil discuss whether you should focus on quantity or quality when it comes to link building. Tune in to hear what you might be doing wrong.

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: Quantity vs Quality: What's Better For Link Building?
  • [00:43] Neil finds that neither proves more useful than the other. Slow and steady wins the race.
  • [01:02] This means whether you post ten links per month or three with high quality content, consistency is the only thing that matters.
  • [01:52] You never consider link-building when you’re starting your business, but it matters.
  • [02:20] When starting out, focus on letting people know who you are and what your brand is.
  • [02:45] Eric builds the majority of his links on Singlegrain.
  • [02:56] He and his company focus on quantity and find that quality isn’t always a factor.
  • [03:15] Now, Singlegrain pulls in 100,000 visitors per month.
  • [03:25] Don’t post junk, but quality rarely matters.
  • [03:45] Don’t always link back to your homepage, rather provide relevant information.
  • [04:25] Though it’s not the sexiest answer, time is always your friend and visitors will grow in time if you remain consistent.

11 min
View

In episode #597, Eric and Neil discuss how you should market an ICO. Tune in to hear tips on how to approach marketing this new industry.

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Market an ICO
  • [00:33] An ICO is an “Initial Coin Offering”.
  • [00:36] A lot of people are releasing cryptocurrencies.
  • [01:03] If you are a marketing agency, when working with an ICO, you have to “cover your ass”.
  • [01:55] Some of the ICO’s have bad websites.
  • [02:21] They’re using bad animations and insider lingo that doesn’t help to further their business.
  • [02:40] You will do much better if you don’t use insider lingo and instead create a simplistic video explaining your product and its value.
  • [03:10] Keep it simple!
  • [03:17] ICO are now maxing out their Telegram groups (which means they have more than 75,000 people in that group).
  • [03:45] One way to grow your telegram group is to blast your email list. Eric did this when working with Polygram.
  • [04:00] The first email drove people to the Telegram group.
  • [04:15] They also airdropped tokens for free because of referral programs, etc.
  • [04:44] Celebrity endorsements aren’t the best idea. Instead, use crypto-influencers, as they draw in the right type of customer.
  • [05:20] Right now, there are a lot of people writing white papers. You want the write type of people writing these (professors, influencers, etc.).
  • [06:00] You can use Inbound Junctions to create press for your ICO.
  • [06:07] Leverage email lists.
  • [06:10] Promote partnerships with other ICO’s.
  • [06:15] Create a Reddit channel.
  • [06:31] Engagement is so important.
  • [06:50] Have people manage communities and chat rooms.
  • [07:12] Facebook has banned any sales ads referencing cryptocurrency.
  • [07:53] That’s all for today!

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Convert Leads into Customers
  • [00:34] Eric and Neil both get leads from their website, but only convert about 5% into customers.
  • [00:52] Converting comes down to nurturing, because you have to coax people into being ready to buy.
  • [01:05] If 5% of your leads are qualified, you could follow up in various ways, but it could take a long time.
  • [01:48] Eric’s company sends an introductory email.
  • [02:02] He has also created a great channel via the Growth Everywhere podcast.
  • [02:29] Nurture people with content over and over.
  • [02:39] Most of your site visitors and leads will buy right away, but many will be hard to convert over time.
  • [03:03] Real-person engagement helps convert people who aren’t sure.
  • [03:14] This means attending conferences, hosting live events, Facebook Live Q&A’s, etc.
  • [03:40] When you do polls using Zoom, you can ask people questions that will help you find new ways to approach your customers.
  • [04:05] See which of the people you are trying to convert are in your area and make sure they attend a live event.
  • [04:54] You should also be engaging your customers on social media, which is a great way to convert.
  • [05:16] When people have questions or problems, don’t pitch your product, just be there to answer questions and prove yourself useful.

  • [03:01] Video is the content that currently drives the most engagement.
  • [03:20] Eric and Neil were called out on their Facebook page for not engaging their followers and just leaving the page to operate on its own.
  • [03:36] Ultimately, the person who called them out was right.
  • [03:52] If you see people asking industry-related questions on social media, even if they are not asking you specifically, respond to them! This is a great way to get more customers and fans.
  • [04:30] At the end of the day, Eric and Neil messed up and broke their process.
  • [04:58] One way to engage your audience is to help people out when they are contacting you to ask questions.
  • [05:03] Join industry-related groups on Facebook and get in the mix.
  • [05:16] Messenger bots are a great way to engage people, as well. Try Mobile Monkey.
  • [05:36] Do your best to integrate live feed options provided by Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, etc.
  • [06:15] Make personalized messages for each site visitor, which will help to engage them (via chatbots).

  • [01:25] They do it over lunch in a conference room and they discuss movements in the industry. Everyone must participate and share.
  • [02:10] #3: Create a team and a system to make your content more popular.
  • [02:19] In Neil’s company, they have a team that specializes in improving previous content.
  • [02:54] #4: Refer to Traction: The Entrepreneur’s Operating System.
  • [03:14] Eric’s team has this type of meeting every Monday. These meetings involve scoreboards, to-do lists, and quarterly rocks.
  • [03:45] This allows his team to systematically move forward.
  • [03:53] #5: A re-test system. Things that worked a year ago are not going to work today.
  • [04:09] Google, Facebook, or LinkedIn authorization used to drastically increase conversions, but now, because of privacy issues, in some cases it is decreasing conversions.
  • [04:36] When running AB tests or marketing experiences, list them out and note the results for each one.
  • [04:43] Take all the winners and re-test them a year from then.
  • [05:08] #6: Personalized and scale your marketing.

  • [05:46] On Growth Everywhere, Eric spoke with the CEO of Drift. The CEO spoke about how they like to tailor their website to each customer.
  • [06:29] #7: The Zebra System: if it looks like a Zebra, walks like a Zebra, eats like a Zebra: it’s a Zebra.

  • [06:47] Campaign Monitor grew by doing email marketing for designers.
  • [06:52] Convert Kit grew by doing email marketing for bloggers.
  • [06:55] There’s nothing wrong with picking a niche.
  • [07:09] As you’re focusing in on a specific demo, you’ll find that as you grow, you will start getting away from your Zebra. Don’t do that too early, because it will hurt your revenue.
  • [07:18] Build a check-in every quarter to make sure your marketing is still focused on the Zebra.
  • [07:31] Once you are hitting over $8 Million in revenue, then you can consider expanding your focus.

View

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: How to Market to the Wealthy
  • [00:35] Any kind of podcast can be marketing to the wealthy.
  • [00:40] At least 15% of people who listen to this podcast make over six figures a year and listen to four or five hours of podcasts in general.
  • [01:06] You can either create your own podcast or advertise during one.
  • [01:20] Using Frank Kern’s method: Create a letter where you ask for five minutes of someone’s time and then send an envelope full of cash.
  • [01:40] Tell them they can keep the money even if they don’t give you the five minutes.
  • [02:18] Eric looked into attended/speaking at TED or Summit.
  • [02:30] Some of the highest quality of people are at these large conferences.
  • [02:50] Basic approaches also work: go on interviews, go on podcasts, reach out to bloggers with large audiences.
  • [03:42] Try to get published on TechCrunch, Mashable, etc.
  • [04:00] Networking is helpful and important.
  • [04:18] When writing SEO content about super-technical aspects of your business, you’re more likely to reach the wealthy.
  • [04:40] Eric and Neil have a live event that was successful, because a lot of people from different organizations showed up.
  • [05:04] Join business organizations.
  • [05:11] To be in EO, you have to make at least $1 million per year.

  • [05:56] Eric has DM’d billionaires on Instagram and has made successful connections that way.

In episode #568, Eric and Neil talk about the difficulty of inbound marketing. Tune in to hear why inbound marketing isn’t an exact science and how you can use it to your advantage.

TIME-STAMPED SHOW NOTES:

  • [00:27] Today’s Topic: How You Are Doing Inbound Marketing All Wrong
  • [00:34] Eric recently lost a deal to a content marketing agency.
  • [00:47] The other agency was promoting processes and the execution plan was to create 500-600 word blog posts once per month.
  • [01:04] Eric believes this was a weak approach, as 500-600 words is brief and you must provide quality overall.
  • [01:44] Inbound marketing is not an exact science.
  • [02:00] Generally, the formula for this unpredictable aspect of marketing is: you put in X and get back ?
  • [02:33] In the long run you can make it more predictable.
  • [03:00] Content marketing is building a lot of goodwill over time and you’re not trying to see an ROI immediately.
  • [03:35] Being omnipresent, running ads, building out a funnel is all part of inbound marketing. If you’re able to build a machine like that, then you can stack paid ads on top.
  • [03:48] ClickFunnels is doing something like $5-6 million a month because of his tight inbound marketing strategy.
  • [04:25] When thinking about inbound marketing, you have to look at it as, are you willing to make an investment to potentially build up goodwill for a brand?
  • [04:33] Eric spends $25,000/month on inbound marketing.
  • [04:40] Some of that money includes salaries for content marketers.
  • [05:10] For each closed deal, it costs Eric’s company $15,000 and they bring in at least $30,000.
  • [05:58] Single Grain was getting 3,000-4,000 visits per month and all the leads were coming from Neil. It took two years to get that site rolling.
  • [07:00] If you create junky content, you’re not going to get ROI, you’ll only lose money.
  • [07:58] Think of inbound marketing as karma points and don’t focus too hard on ROI.
  • [08:08] That’s all for today!

  • [01:30] Historically, they have updated their algorithm for years, but this always increased their ad revenue.
  • [02:01] Neil has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to “buy fans”.
  • [02:17] Every time Facebook updates its algorithm, it will be harder and harder for you to gain traction with your ads.
  • [02:25] Don’t buy fans, instead spend the money to drive traffic to blog posts and websites.
  • [04:00] Neil spent money on something that didn’t help his business, while Eric spent money on ads.
  • [04:35] YouTube isn’t as “harsh” with their algorithm.
