272: Create More Collectors, Not Content

23 min
View

Are you ready to shatter the myth that creating endless content will skyrocket your art career? Brace yourself because, in this episode, I'm about to reveal the uncomfortable truth about what really drives sales for artists – and it's not what you think.

"When planning our studio time, 20 hours a week or 4 hours a day should be your maximum. Any more than that, you're burning yourself out in ways that isn't helpful to your artistic practice."- Miriam Schulman

In this podcast, you'll discover…
  • The foundation of a successful art business relies on mastering the skill of selling.

  • The need to shift attention from creating endless content to actively building relationships and engaging with potential collectors. By dedicating time to meet people, share your art, and make offers, you can create genuine connections that lead to sales.

  • Successful art business growth involves embracing the vulnerability of rejection and putting oneself out there.

"You need to focus on getting out there and creating collectors. That's what your time needs to be spent on."- Miriam Schulman

Are you tired of the conventional career advice that promises a one-size-fits-all path to success? Get ready to challenge the status quo, shatter limitations, and discover a world where trial, error, and embracing uncertainty lead to triumph. Ashley Stahl, a counterterrorism professional turned career coach, speaker, and author of You-Turn, joins us for an impactful conversation on navigating career switch-ups and embarking on creative endeavors with no roadmap. If you've ever questioned your direction, felt the urge to explore new avenues, or wondered if unconventional could be the key to exceptional, this episode is your ultimate compass.

"Don't do what you love. Don't follow your passion. Do what you are. What I'm really saying is, what's your zone of genius?"- Ashley Stahl

In this podcast, you'll discover…
  • Embracing trial and error is essential both in your career and creative pursuits. It's okay not to have all the answers upfront, and experimentation is a natural part of growth and success.

  • Focus on what skills come naturally to you and contribute to your unique energy. Consider the alignment between your work and your core values. If the work violates your values, it's important to reassess and pivot.

  • Be open to transition and adaptation, be willing to learn from both successes and failures, and remember that there are many paths and iterations to your growth and fulfillment.

"Happiness is not for the faint of heart. It's for the person that knows how to say no. It's for the person that knows how to get messy. We are being way too perfect in our career. We have way too much shame around the process of learning."- Ashley Stahl

Today I'm talking about the controversial recent Supreme Court rulings on copyright infringement. From the blurred lines of transformative use to the importance of respecting artists' work, I'll dig into the legal and ethical considerations that creatives need to be aware of. But as we'll see, sometimes even the law can leave us with more questions than answers.

In this episode I'll discuss:

  • The implications of the recent Supreme Court rulings on copyright infringement.

  • The world of transformative imagery in art and photography.

  • How government decisions influence art and copyright laws.

  • The significance of respecting artists' work and adhering to copyright laws.

Respect other people's work, because it's not just their creation, it's their livelihood. - Miriam Schulman

Some of the resources mentioned today:

  • Check out iStock or Adobe Stock for legal photo licensing.

  • Use free photo sites like Unsplash to find images for personal or commercial use.

  • Purchase a standard or extended license for specific photos on Adobe Stock.

You cannot just take a photograph off of the internet and paint it. You can't. It's not legal. It's never been legal. -Miriam Shulman

In the world of art and creativity, there's an unwritten code of conduct that encompasses respecting the work of fellow artists, regardless of the medium. Photographers are artists too. You don't want people copying your paintings and the same thing should be true for photographs.

It's important for artists to recognize the boundaries set by copyright laws and ensure that their own work doesn't infringe on the rights of others. Respecting other artists' work not only builds a sense of community among creators but also fosters a more collaborative and innovative environment.

260: Creativity Loves Constraints

31 min
View

Creativity thrives within the boundaries of constraints. It flourishes and reaches new heights when there are limitations in place. Have you ever noticed that having unlimited time, resources, or ideas can sometimes lead to a creative slump, leaving your mind scattered and unable to produce anything we like?

In this episode, I delve into the power of constraints. How do they actually help us? What benefits do they bring? How can we intentionally impose constraints upon ourselves?

"When you know what the limits are, you can explore different possibilities without the fear of failure." - Miriam Schulman

Constraints imposed on your work increase your creativity by:

  • focusing the mind

  • facilitating originality

  • encouraging risk-taking

  • increasing resourcefulness

"Make that commitment to yourself. Doing what you say you'll do will increase your self-trust, which will ultimately increase your confidence." - Miriam Schulman

As artists, we often find ourselves working under various forms of constraints, whether it's limited time, resources, project requirements, or others' ideas. However, we can also proactively practice self-imposed constraints to train our creativity and discover something new. I challenge you to experiment with some of the suggestions shared in this episode. I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised by what you can create, discovering something you didn't even know you were capable of.

Our art and our books don't sell themselves. It's our connection with other people and the stories we share and the experiences we relate to, that we capture hearts and minds.

I talked with Emily Silva Hockstra about this on the show today. In 2014, Emily quit her job to pursue her dream of becoming an author. She got a one-way ticket to Bali and set out to write the next Eat, Pray, Love. But when she got one rejection after another from agents, she decided to put it away and focus on her coaching business. She was contacted by her publisher weeks later with the pitch for her first book Moonlight Gratitude.

Emily's commitment to sharing her book and presenting it to the world has led to the sale of over a hundred thousand copies, each representing a life touched and transformed by her words.

"We're all kind of making it up as we go along, because who even knows what it's supposed to be anyway? And why should it all be the same?" – Miriam Schulman

Here's a few lessons from Emily:

  • Embrace the natural flow of your journey; don't force outcomes.

  • Remember that selling your book, your art, your work comes from personal connections.

  • For people to know your work, you have to share your work.

"People don't know the magic that you have. So harness your bravery and share what you're creating. Who knows who you'll affect?" – Emily Silva Hockstra

258: Scarcity Selling

29 min
View

During my one-on-one calls with artists, I've had conversations where I hear about their struggles, and I noticed that the same themes kept coming up over and over again. One of these is what I call "Scarcity selling."

Scarcity selling starts from the lack of abundance mindset of artists around the creation of their art. This is when artists doubt that they can produce more amazing, beautiful pieces. This can lead to other struggles like anxiety, creativity burnout, over-working your art pieces, procrastination, analysis paralysis, and even guilt.

In this episode, I share the story of two of my clients who struggled with producing more art. You may find their stories familiar.

"Is the risk of the worst-case scenario worth the possibility of the best-case scenario?" - Miriam Schulman

What if you're stuck in this state of scarcity selling? What can you do?

  • Have a structure around the creation of your art

  • Create more art

  • Believe that you'll create even better art

Sometimes it can be difficult to let go and sell your art. That's normal. Maybe your piece feels incredibly personal. Maybe you're clinging to your pieces out of fear. But we need to get used to creating art to let it go.

"We almost always have our best work ahead of us." - Miriam Schulman

Get over your scarcity selling mindset and have the confidence to create more art, and stay inspired.

For artpreneurs, photography is a powerful way to position your art and your products online and create a visual identity that truly represents you and your work. In this episode, we're talking all about branding photography.

Carolina Luna is a New York-based seasoned photographer and a branding and transformation catalyst. She works with entrepreneurs, creatives, and visionaries to help them build a strong social image with photography that's as individual as they are, to match their personality and messaging. She teaches entrepreneurs how to build authenticity, authority, and credibility online using strategic photos as a positioning tool. Fun fact: she's also the photographer that I hired for my book launch party for Artpreneur.

"The purpose of personal branding photography is not to make you look like who you are not. It's to keep you as authentic as you are… showing little slices of your life to allow your audience to see how you live your life." - Carolina Luna

So, what makes branding photography different from a regular photography session? A regular photography session takes pretty pictures. But branding photography gives you images that capture who you are, your work, and your message in a photo.

Here are three questions Carolina answers:

  • What are the common mistakes artpreneurs make when they post their photographs?

  • How do you choose locations when you're doing brand photography to showcase the entrepreneur behind the brand?

  • What if you're uncomfortable in front of the camera?

She also gives practical tips for your next branding photoshoot, like how to pose in front of the camera, what kinds of photos you need to take, and the conversations you need to have with your photographer before they start taking the photo.

"Everything that shows how you live your best life helps people to bond with you." - Carolina Luna

And when it comes to choosing your photographer, Carolina advises that they should know marketing and understand branding so they can help you understand how you want to position yourself, elevate your vision, and help you capture how you want to be remembered as an artist.

256: 3 Art Selling Mistakes to Avoid

31 min
View

I just got back from a week in Israel, and it was an amazing time with my family. In this episode, I'm sharing The Tale of Two Shopkeepers. One failed to sell me pieces I wanted to buy, and another sold me two pieces of something I didn't even know I wanted. Two very different shopping experiences, and two different results.

Here are some of the selling points I noticed as a buyer that may help you sell your art:

  • Being helpful isn't pushy.
  • Don't put obstacles up for your customers.
  • Focus on the experience of your customers, not the transaction.

"Stoke your collector's passion while they're in the throes of the experience." - Miriam Schulman

I also introduce a new segment to the podcast called "The Art World Remembers," and I answer a question from one of our Artist Incubator clients.

The stories I share in this episode are reminders for the next time you talk to your clients, and to give them an experience that will lead to your next sale.

While I was writing the book proposal for Artpreneur I had to look at what other art books are out there and see how my book could fill a need that these books haven't. And it was in this process that I came across today's guest, Jeff Goins.

Jeff is a bestselling author, podcaster, blogger, marketer, speaker, and a few other things. Through his bestselling books, courses, coaching, and speeches, he shares his ongoing journey of transformation, inspiring creators like you to discover your voice and share it with the world. He's also the founder of Fresh Complaint, a bespoke creative agency that helps thought leaders turn good ideas into big ideas. Among other titles, he wrote Real Artists Don't Starve, where he debunks the myth of the starving artist with rules for artists who thrive.

"Being seen doing your work is the best marketing an artist can offer." - Jeff Goins

With everything he's done, Jeff has made more than a few observations about the world. Here are some common misconceptions about art that he busts today:

  • Real artists don't care about money.

  • Real artists don't need to do any marketing; they just have to make good art.

  • Artworks reach a point in creation when they are finished or complete.

"Art is not the thing you create. It is the process by which you create it." - Jeff Goins

One of the things Jeff shares is that an art is never finished. A book is never done, it's only due. Books and art belong to a certain point in time, and can never be recreated, even by the artist.

  • Buying your art as an NFT

  • Fake online order confirmation

"Anything that sounds too good to be true usually is." – Miriam Schulman

According to the New York Times, there are about 124 million dollars in damages from more than 40,000 cases involving fraudulent foreign money orders or fake checks. And there were more than 250 million phishing attacks in 2022.

Let's get real for a moment - have you ever considered how the underwear you wear affects your overall confidence and presentation to the world? You and I know that self-expression and confidence are key to success in our creative endeavors.

Joining us in this episode is personal stylist, certified life coach, and former lawyer, Judith Gaton. She's also the author of How to be a F*cking Lady: A Modern Guide to Being Charming & Fierce AF. She lives by the motto that confident women leave legacies, and her life's work is centered all around helping women find their confidence so they can leave their impact on the world.

So how much can actually be said about undergarments? Well, a lot as it turns out. Here are just three of the points Judith teaches us about in this episode:

  • The importance of underwear as foundational pieces

  • The value we assign to things we buy for ourselves

  • Finding your personal style and defining how you want to present yourself to the world

"For my clients, a lot of them forget they're not a head floating around in the world. They are a head that requires a body to be fully functioning and comfortable in order to do whatever is their work in the world" - Judith Gaton

When you take the time to just stand still and assess how you're feeling, as Judith said, you'll find a treasure trove of information. It can be an uncomfortable hairstyle, ill-fitting undergarments, or just how the clothes you wear don't feel like you.

We're all faced with the power and impact of relationships at some point in our lives, both personally and professionally. I think as artists, we're usually introverted, and fostering relationships can present a challenge. But why are relationships so important?

Mike Kim is a business coach and marketing strategist who specializes in personal branding, product launch strategies, and copywriting. He's the author of You Are the Brand and host of the podcast with the same title.

"Relationships are rocket ships. You can only go so far on your own." - Mike Kim

Mike approaches marketing and establishing oneself by connecting and building relationships with people. In his book, he shared several strategies for building relationships. Here are three he talks about more in-depth in this episode:

  • Become someone else's case study.

  • Invest in more exclusive opportunities.

  • The epic breakfast.

"It's surprising how quickly your circles can change if you're just a recommendable person." - Mike Kim

One of Mike's best bits of wisdom is to work on yourself to become someone who's recommendable. Be someone who's easy-going, easy to talk to, and easy to talk about (even when you're not in the room!). Be someone who brings people together. The one who introduces amazing relationships.

When you come from a place of generosity, you lift others up, and advocate for them, you'll be surprised by the quality of relationships you'll easily build.

If you've been anywhere on the internet in the past months, you probably noticed the rise in discussions about AI. Whether it's the AI pictures everyone's posted on their Instagram or the increase in the buzz about Chat GPT, AI isn't a topic you can miss. But with the rise of AI comes the rise of concern over the impact it could have for artists and creatives. To talk more about creativity and art, Steve Hoffman is joining us today.

Steve is the Chairman & CEO of Founders Space, a global innovation hub for entrepreneurs, corporations, and investors. Hoffman is also a venture investor, founder of three venture-backed and two bootstrapped startups, and author of several award-winning books, including Make Elephants Fly, Surviving a Startup, and The Five Forces.

"Art without opinions is just a pretty picture." - Steve Hoffman

Steve is confident that AI won't replace artists and creatives. And all those pretty pictures you see? They're just pretty pictures. They aren't art. AI is limited.

But what are the limitations of AI? And what sets these "pretty pictures" apart from art? Steve discusses more of these topics:

  • AI can't have opinions, and all art has to come from opinions that allow it to impact people.

  • All AI is biased according to the data it's been fed, and these limits may not be true for the artist.

  • Eventually, if you use AI enough times, everything it creates starts to look and sound the same, and that unique creativity is not something AI will be capable of having.

And Steve's advice to artists? Don't dismiss AI. It's a tool you can utilize to create art you haven't been able to create before.

In all the conversations with artists I've had, the number one thing that keeps on coming up is the reluctance to sell. I see this on websites that aren't set up for buyers to easily be able to purchase their art and in their reluctance to sell in person. Our guest today is here to talk us through the different ways to sell and why it's important for you to also do it in person.

David Meltzer is a legendary sports executive, entrepreneur, investor, and co-founder of Sports One Marketing. He served as the CEO of Lee Steinberg Sports & Entertainment Agency and is the author of Connected to Greatness.

So how do we find our audience, our buyers, and the people who'll connect with and appreciate our art? Here's what David shares:

  • You need to create opportunities for yourself.

  • Meet the buyer where they are comfortable.

  • Learn how to communicate and tell the story of your art.

"It's so interesting how much we participate in perception that is working against ourselves." - David Meltzer

David talked about how it's up to us to meet people, put ourselves out there, and make our own opportunities. While this can be intimidating, he tells us how and why we need to do this in a beautiful and inspiring way.

The buzz around AI, specifically ChatGPT, has been getting louder over the past few months. People are discovering more ways they can use this new technology in everyday tasks. Joining me today to talk about AI and ChatGPT is Jen Lehner.

Jen is a digital marketing and systems strategist. She teaches entrepreneurs how to grow their audience and monetize with social media, digital tools, and strategic outsourcing.

Jen describes ChatGPT as an artificial intelligence platform that's been trained up to 2021 with knowledge of the world that you can have a conversation with.

"For anybody who's hearing about this for the first time, I think the way to think about this is a way to enhance what we're doing." - Jen Lehner

How can we use AI to save time? Here are some uses Jen talks about more about:

  • AI can significantly cut down the hours when we use it to generate ideas, examples, and first drafts.

  • AI can help you start tasks you dread doing, like that email that you don't want to send.

  • AI can be fun. Use it to write a story Godfather style. Use it to give instructions on how to remove peanut butter from a VCR sounding like the King James Version of the Bible.

AI can help you with job postings, legal documents, writing or correcting code, grammar and spell checks, rewrites, ideas and strategies for ads, headlines and subject lines, webinar ideas, topic outlines, titles, creative and engaging art descriptions, SEO keywords, and many other things.

As we're watching the rise of AI and how it develops in real-time, just remember that it's still just a tool. It requires knowledge and creativity to use. And no matter how human-like its outputs are, AI can never be creative or have new ideas.

A lot of people think about sharing their story and writing their own book. As a creative, my bets are that you've considered this idea as well. But the publishing world can be intimidating, and figuring out where to get started can be overwhelming.

Our guest today is Michele Martin. Michele is a literary agent and the founder of MDM Management. She started in the book publishing industry in the 1970s and has worked as an associate publisher at Random House, Simon Schuster, and other major book publishers. Most importantly, she's my book agent for Artpreneur.

What makes your book proposal stand out to an agent? What makes them take a second look at your proposal in the middle of looking at hundreds of other proposals each week? Here are three pieces of advice from Michele:

  • Have a unique idea

  • Have an established platform

  • Have a defined, personal voice

"Your book has to be clearly new enough that they're willing to take another book off the shelf to put yours on it." - Michele Martin

Writing a book is a fun process. The journey to getting it published can be exciting. And there's nothing like the feeling you get when people tell you that your book helped them, or that they connected with your story.

247: Your Voice Matters

15 min
View

Have you ever encountered trolls and critics? In this day and age, anyone who puts anything of themselves out there can get criticized and receive negative comments. Even artists.

This episode is inspired by one such troll. This is a response to a troll who said, "You have an ugly voice."

Negative comments aren't about you. It's a reflection of the person spreading negativity.

Everyone who's ever done anything significant has faced criticism. You can't change that. The only thing you can do is decide whether you'll let them affect you. Will you?

"You have to love your voice, your style, and your art as it's developing, as you're uncovering it, as it is growing." - Miriam Schulman

In this short episode, these are the three points I want to leave you with:

  • Marketing and mindset trump talent every time.

  • Stay true to the authentic you.

  • Find your voice, own, and express it.

"Some people will find fault with you no matter what you do. But if they hate you for your uniqueness, at least they're hating you for the right reasons." - Miriam Schulman

245: Think Like an Abundant Artist

24 min
View

One of the biggest concerns of artists is pricing. What is the value of my art? Am I selling too high? Will anyone pay for this? And a lot of times, artists sell their art too low. The problem is whenever art is priced too low, it rings alarm bells in buyer's mind and makes them ask "What's wrong with it? Why is it too low? Is this real?"

"Not all buyers are looking for what's cheapest, or even what's most popular. A conscious consumer may care more about a company's alignment with their values." - Miriam Schulman

People are willing to pay for art and the value they see in it. And for us to be comfortable with charging for our art, we need to have a mindset shift around pricing.

Here are some things you might be wondering:

  • How to scale art and what sizes sell best?

  • How did the pandemic and the recession affect art sales??

  • Is it too late to start an art career?

When buyers buy art, they aren't just paying for the piece. They are paying for the story, the fantasy, and the connection that comes with the piece. In fact, the recent global crises just further reminded people how much they want that escape and connection, and this is a good thing for artists. When you talk about your art, whether it's on your website, in emails, or directly, in person, tell stories. Talk about your process, why you create art and the story behind each piece. Also, tell them stories of your past clients, and how they were able to connect with your art. You'll never know which ones they'll be able to connect with.

And never stop creating art. The world is always in need of more art.

244: Art is Life with Jerry Saltz

56 min
View

Do you remember "finishing" a painting, or a writing and looking back at it a few days later and realizing that it's not quite done yet? Did you ever wake up at 3 am only to be plagued by the voices that say just how terrible of an artist you are? These are universal experiences all artists share and our guest shares more about these.

Today's guest is Jerry Saltz, and he's seen enough art to know what he's talking about. Jerry is an art critic, a columnist, and Senior Art Critic for New York Magazine. He was awarded the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Criticism and is a two-time ASME Award winner. He's authored several books including NYT Best Seller How to Be an Artist and Art is Life.

For many years now, Jerry's days have been completely filled with art. From waking up in the morning trying to get to work as soon as possible, going through the New York art scene with his wife (who is also an art critic), discussing their thoughts over some classic NY pizza, and going home to write about what he just saw, he's amassed a wide knowledge of art. And he talks more about the realizations he's had throughout the years and the universal truths about art.

"Just get to work, artists. It's not that hard to make bad art." - Jerry Saltz

So what are these universal truths about art? Here are some that we talk about in this episode:

  • All artists make bad art
  • The impact of art and the statements they make
  • The process of making art and "leaving everything on the canvas."

Art is powerful. Art leaves an impact. Everything you create will leave an impact, and maybe you'll never even know what that impact is. But you can make a change. So keep on making art, even if it's mediocre. Even if it's bad. Because only you can make your art, and only you are capable of making your change. Listen to this episode to receive more inspiration, and hear Jerry's story and funny, yet extremely relatable, anecdotes on art.

"Art does change lives and minds. And lives and people change the world." - Jerry Saltz

Artpreneur is officially out in the stores and you can now go out and grab your own copy.

In celebration of this launch, I did something different for this episode. Today's guests are artists just like you. With varied backgrounds and experiences, they ask their questions, share their stories while I share mine and a couple of excerpts from my book. It's a fun, inspiring, conversation that I'm sure you'll appreciate.

Here are some excerpts I share in this episode:

Chapter 1 "Choose to Believe"

There's an artist in each of us wanting to break free. Your muse is tired of staying quiet and waiting for you to feel ready. Take the next step and dream bigger. You are enough. You are more than capable.

Chapter 3 "Start Before You're Ready"

Understand that regardless of the kind of art you create… you must love your art so fiercely that you truly feel the world will miss out if they don't want what you're offering.

Chapter 10 "Listen to Understand"

This chapter details a 9-step process for selling, both for in-person and online selling. There's also an Overcoming Objections Chart, which has actions steps and scripts you can use when you encounter objections.

"Your muse is tired of staying quiet and waiting for you to feel ready" - Miriam Schulman

Chapter 12 "Why Your Art Matters"

Your art matters in so many ways beyond what selling it will do for you professionally. Art helps us process the world around us and serves both a spiritual and social function, not unlike religion.

I hope this episode will encourage you to pursue your art and improve your business. Know that you can do it, that you're capable, and you have what it takes. Stay inspired!

When I submitted the book proposal for Artpreneur, the most pushback I got was on why I didn't include a chapter on social media. I wanted my book to be a classic, to still be relevant in five years, and social media is evolving so often that I knew adding it would be a mistake. Instead of just dropping the topic completely, I decided to dive deeper and make a stronger case for why social media isn't as important as you might believe.

The thing is, social media is no longer what it was. It's constantly changing so the techniques that work now could no longer work in six months. The average engagement on some platforms is so low it's not worth the time you need to put in to get those engagements.

"Marketing and mindset trump talent." - Miriam Schulman

So how can you still use social media today so that it's still worth your time and effort? Here are three topics I talk about more in this episode:

  • Secure earned media coverage to effectively expand your online presence.
  • Identify the most valuable social media platforms for your art and avoid the time wasters
  • Use social media to build relationships and engage with your audience, rather than a substitute for traditional marketing

"Traditional marketing trumps social media." - Miriam Schulman

I'm not going to tell you to stop using social media. It still has its place. But you can't let it be your only platform and it's better to explore methods and channels beyond social media.

Message me on Instagram, DM me "Believe" and see for yourself how social media can be used to connect and you'll receive the first chapter of my book Artpreneur for free.

I'm sure you've seen less talented people rise to the top while those with the talent don't. It's baffling and might even seem unfair. But what if I tell you that it's all in the marketing?

In this episode, we discuss how marketing and mindset play important roles in your success, even more than talent. I talk about how famous artists (yes, even those from hundreds of years ago) utilized marketing to sell their art. And I even share personal stories where I saw and experienced how consistency led to better results than talent.

"I do believe anyone can be an artist. However, you need to develop the right mindset and learn the skills and techniques to get the results you want." - Miriam Schulman

Why are marketing and mindset so important? Is talent still important? Here are the three thoughts I share that I want you to take home:

  • You need to learn marketing to be able to share and sell your art
  • Mindset is more important than marketing because marketing won't work well without the right mindset behind it
  • Consistent effort over time trumps talent. All the time

"If you want to think like a famous artist, marketing matters." - Miriam Schulman

I know it can be discouraging to see child prodigies paraded in the media or look at the works of the great masters and feel like we'll never achieve what they did. I know that it can be baffling to see not-so-great art sell for a lot of money. But once you learn that it's not just about the art, you can achieve your goal. Once you develop the mindset, learn the skills, and put in the effort, you'll be able surprised by what you can achieve.

In marketing your business or selling your products through the traditional marketing methods, did you ever feel uncomfortable, unsure, or question whether this is really you? That's exactly what our guest Sarah Santacroce felt while learning the trade of online marketing.

Sarah is an entrepreneur in the Marketing Space. She's the Founder of the Humane Business Revolution and an internationally recognized LinkedIn Consultant, entrepreneur, podcaster, 'Hippie turned Business Coach' and author of 'Marketing Like We're Human' and 'Selling Like We're Human' books.

"We need a different way for entrepreneurs to … do marketing, and not just cookie cutter approaches. Yes, it has to do with the scarcity and the urgency, but… let's look at what they're meant for and let's use them in a different way with empathy and kindness." - Sarah Santacroce

So how do you start marketing with a humane approach? Here are some of the points Sarah raised that you can start applying today:

  • False urgency, scarcity, wealth-signaling, ang gap selling marketing are some of the anxiety-inducing marketing methods. With how much the world has consciously evolved in the past few years, they are now an outdated approach to marketing.
  • The reason why you are uncomfortable with selling and marketing has to do with worthiness and really believing in yourself.
  • Share the positive outcome of your product/service and use empathy and perspective-taking to connect with your clients.

"Let's empower our clients. Let's treat them as the smart human beings they are." - Sarah Santacroce

The voices that say, "In order to succeed, you need to run your business this way," or "In order to sell, you need to market this way," can be overwhelming, especially when you feel that these methods aren't true to who you are. The good news is that this is YOUR business. YOU are the one running it. YOU get to make the decision. And it's possible to make decisions that are true to you, allows you to connect with your clients, and still be profitable.

NFTs are bridging the gap between art and technology but many artists (including myself) still don't quite understand what they are and how to do them. In this episode our inspiration is NFT art and its ability to help us explore another stream of income and a look into the future. Unfortunately, there are a lot of scams circulating the internet praying on artists enticing them with quick money for an NFT of their work.

Luckily, our guest, Capucine Jenkins, curator of digital art and NFTs at Saatchi Art is here to demystify the process for us. Class is in session and she's giving us the NFT 101 class so that you can see the opportunities that exist even if you're a traditional artist.

"Much of our goal and objective really is to help artists help growing artists and definitely emerging artists make a livelihood for themselves." - Capucine Jenkins

Everything you'll need to start considering NFT art:

  • NFTs are so much more than JPGs
  • You don't have to be a digital artist to sell NFTs
  • Art and technology don't have to be in contrast of each other
  • NFTs are really about intellectual property and assets that allow you control as an artist

Capucine explains the opposing worlds of art before this NFT technology exploded in popularity, and the digital world that now exists for artists to live and thrive in. Capucine says that NFTs give you "a mid-tier place …to be able to have a livelihood." Because it exists on a technology called the blockchain, there is no middle man, and your royalties, rights as an artist, and proper compensations are baked into these digital contracts called smart contracts.

"There's this understanding that art and tech are in contrast, or even in conflict with each other, when I think NFT's actually do the job of bridging that gap." - Capucine Jenkins

The most common question I get asked by those who are considering joining my incubator is something similar to "What are the guaranteed results if I join?"

However, the only one who can guarantee your results are YOU. Results and success aren't dependent on a program, it's based on the work that you put in!

Not all students who apply to law or medical school get in. And not all who get in graduate. The ones who finish are the ones who put in the work. In the same way, not all participants of any program will have the same results.

"Only you can guarantee your result." -Miriam Schulman

So what can you do to increase your results? Here are three points I discuss in detail on this episode:

  • You're the only one who can guarantee your success. Your success is equivalent to the effort you put in
  • Give your relentless commitment and live the VIP life
  • Invest in your relationships

"Building an art business takes even more courage. Because you have to put in the perspiration behind the inspiration." -Miriam Schulman

It can be equally terrifying and exciting to realize that the outcome of your work is dependent on you. Take this time as a year ends and another one begins, to plan for the next year ahead. Take this time to introspect and ask yourself: Who are you becoming? How are you showing up to the world? What are your dreams? Do your actions lead you towards your dreams? Remember that you're the only one who can guarantee your success.

If you've been thinking about writing a book, let's demystify the process. This episode shines a light on a few of the things that can make it a little less scary so you can actually write your book.

Candice L. Davis is the book coach behind my first published book, Artpreneur. We're diving in and sharing many of the moments I've experienced becoming a published author and what Candice has seen many authors struggle with. It's hard to take the first step when you think you're the only one struggling with certain things. It's easier when you see what's possible in spite of your perceived challenges and learn there's support and a way around the real and perceived challenges of writing your first book.

"You can become a great writer; these are just skills. It's a set of skills that you can develop" - Candice L. Davis

Things that will encourage you to write your book:

  • The challenges holding you back are common to many first-time writers
  • Writing a book for a publisher is a different kind of pressure, but it's also rewarding
  • Releasing a published book is a team effort not a solo sport, get the help you need early

Writing a book takes much longer than I had anticipated, and it was a completely different experience than I believed it would be. Releasing a published book is truly like a birthing process, with pain and moments of frustration, but thankfully you get a whole team supporting the birth of your book if you take the traditional publishing route. The process and experience is so worth it in the end. I wish it for all of you wanting to share your message.

If you've been on the fence about publishing a book and overwhelmed about what goes into it, then this episode is going to answer many of your questions.

I have to admit, getting my book traditionally published was not as simple as I thought it would be, but I have no regrets about the journey.

Allison Lane helps people get published by guiding them through the process of writing a proposal to secure a book agent and ultimately get a publishing contract. I feel lucky to have had her guidance preparing my own book proposal for Artpreneur.

"The book proposal becomes the anchor to every author's marketing ecosystem." -Allison Lane

We're peeling back the layers of the marketing it takes to create a book proposal and what goes into pitching it. There are a number of areas you can get wrong attempting this process on your own, and Allison simplifies the process for you because of her marketing background.

Key insights we discuss about book proposals:

  • Your book proposal is an important marketing document that requires skill to pitch and is used even after the book is published
  • How the right book comps in your book proposal are key for the editor to see what audiences your book can be marketed to
  • Writing a captivating hook for the book proposal is a challenge when you don't keep in mind who is reading it and for what purpose.
  • Be your best marketer by giving people access to you and how you and your work makes them feel

Pitching a book takes lots of specialized skills, industry knowledge, and effort. If I had chosen the self-publishing route, it would have been a much different experience, but it would've also turned out to be a much different book. Regardless of the route you decide to go, don't be afraid to write your story and share it with the world.

"Words really matter and understanding who the end recipient of those words are is really about empathy and understanding, all communication strategy is." -Allison Lane

You can build a successful business around your art and creative work without sacrificing what matters to you. Relationships, time for yourself, and space for creativity don't need to be lost to hustle culture and burnout.

My guest today, Jadah Sellner, has built several successful companies and has experienced the burnout that is not sustainable. Now she helps women unleash their creativity, intuition and purpose through her books, her podcast, and coaching.

In this episode, we're sharing just a few of the many golden lessons Jadah has in her latest book called She Builds. She values allowing yourself to follow your own intuitive path to create and build your own meaningful life.

" Give ourselves permission to build a business from a place of love." -Jadah Sellner

Lessons we discuss from Jadah's book:

  • Move from strictly obsessive passion into a harmonious passion to avoid burnout
  • Toxic productivity and that constant feel of not enoughness are signs to slow down
  • 3 kinds of mastermind support group buckets you need to excel in your journey
  • Writing a letter to your future yourself is meant to set the vision and intention

There are so many more lessons we didn't have the time to cover. She shares her wisdom and insights into things like high functioning anxiety, the cycle of fear, having calendar bodyguards and more in her book. The narrative around hustle culture is that it's sexy and something to strive for and wear like a badge of honor. Jadah is breaking that narrative apart and refocusing on how to create a fuller, more meaningful life with room for success and love.

"Make space and time to dream about what it is that you want to create." - Jadah Sellner

Embrace your inner weirdo and create beautiful art. The best art in this world is created by us weirdos. The word, weird, hasn't always had negative connotations and carries so much more meaning that we give to it.

This time around, Theresa Pridemore is interviewing me. Listen and get ready to feel charged to create the art that only you can.

"When you're embracing the weird you are embracing your destiny." -Miriam Schulman

Today I'm sharing the key ideas you need to embrace your inner weirdo and give space for all the weird creativity you have to come out.

What we're discussing:

  • 9 steps you need to create your signature brand and style
  • Standing out is the key to getting noticed and distinguishing yourself
  • Don't be afraid to amplify your imperfections and lean into your own style

The idea for this conversation is directly from Chapter 6 of my newest book, Artpreneur, which is your guide to turning your creative ideas into a business that sustains the life you want to live. Nurturing your inner weirdo and giving it the space and opportunity to distinguish you is one of the biggest gifts you can give to yourself.

You don't have to be worried about getting it right all the time. You don't need to be consumed with people pleasing to the extent that you no longer have a voice or a style.

"Give yourself permission to turn some people off." - Theresa Pridemore

Trying to earn a sustainable income from selling your art is never comfortable, but it's always worth it. The push back I hear most often from artists is selling art through social media, doing shows in person, or getting their art into a gallery.

I want you to know that you don't have the sell art in person to be successful, there are many options available, but you do have to pick something.

I've asked Marianne Nielsen to join us because she's had the same aversion to selling in person and has found a way around it that is more natural and in flow with her and her art style.

"You have to do something, and then what you're doing, you have to lean into it really hard." -Miriam Schulman

I want you to consider what methods of marketing and selling your art you've been most resistant to and what you could push yourself to try. Being uncomfortable is a part of your growth and journey as an artist and as a person.

Key ideas and thoughts we're discussing:

  • Nurturing and growing your email list isn't as scary as you think
  • The trick Marianne uses to get a 60% open rate on her emails
  • How Marianne is using Pinterest to grow her email list and get 200k+ visitors
  • Our reaction to Benjamin Moore's color of the year for 2023

Marianne paints abstract art intuitively from her dining room overlooking the forest through the window, moved and inspired by her emotional state and mindset in the moment. As uncomfortable as she was to sending weekly emails, through my incubator program she allowed herself the discomfort and trusted the process. Selling art in person isn't the only option, and between Marianne's email list and Pinterest, there is inspiration for you to uncover what will work for you.

"Painting has been a huge emotional healing process for me, and it still is, [...] It taught me so much about myself." - Marianne H. Nielsen

You can manifest your wildest dreams even in your everyday life. What makes manifestation real is your ability and willingness to believe.

You need to believe and visualize what you want to bring it into your conscious awareness. -Miriam Schulman

What we're exploring in this episode:

  • How you sabotage yourself when you're not willing to believe
  • When you get clear with what you want, you'll be able to call it into your conscious awareness.
  • How to open your mind to recognize when what you want comes your way[Text Wrapping Break]

We block our ability to manifest through a lack of belief. We don't believe in ourselves. We don't believe what's really possible. We stand so firm on the very beliefs we should be questioning and end up undermining our own success.

The universe will bring you things when you get clear about what you want and the opportunities you're looking for. You need positive belief and an open mind to recognize it when it comes your way.

Start imaging your roadmap to becoming an author with insights and writing inspiration from my guest, Linda Sivertsen. She's joining us to reveal how she helps writers navigate the beauty of writing a book and getting book proposals.

"I just happen to be one of those freaky weird people who just loves the selling process. I love book proposals." -Linda Sivertsen

What we're unpacking in this episode:

  • The birthing process of writing
  • Working with publishers and agents
  • Selling your book before you write it

There's so much to unpack in the book writing process. It's part beautiful, part painful, and part scary. Should you write a book, should you not write a book? One of the points Linda touches on is the pain of seeing someone die with the regret of not having written their story. Her beautiful reminder is to listen to your higher self when it comes to writing. If there's an internal nudge and inner voice saying to write this book, whatever it is, listen!

229: Tips to Sell More Art 2022

11 min
View

This Friday round up episode has 5 great tips to help you sell more art. No more starving artists here! Follow these simple steps to connecting with more customers and creating more sales.

Mind Your Body Language to Sell More Art

When you're selling in person, body language matters. In fact, I think it matters even if you aren't in person.

You don't want to be the artist in the corner with your coffee. Plan to stand and project confidence and energy. Be mindful of the space that potential customers find comfortable, so they don't feel like you're hovering.

Be approachable and ready to connect.

Listen to Your Customers to Sell More Art

When talking to a customer, it's hard not to interrupt. Don't do it! Active listening will help you understand what's important to them. You don't need to convince anyone.

Feeling heard is going to mean much more to your customer. If selling more art is important to you, then pre-order a copy of Artpreneur and get the bonuses including the Artpreneur Affirmation Series.

Good Salespeople Versus Bad Salespeople

Bad salespeople feel like they have to convince. No one enjoys being talked at! Here's what you can do instead. Draft some great questions to prompt conversations. You'll sell more art, and people will truly enjoy talking to you too.

Why You Should Avoid Autoresponders on Social Media

Here's why you should avoid autoresponders on social media. Bots and automation are not helpful. People who want to engage with you on social are looking for human interaction.

Nothing turns off a prospect faster than an automated response. When you respond, ask permission to take the next step. You don't have to share everything in one long message. Allow the conversation to evolve naturally.

A Powerful Tip to Sell More Art

What's in a name? Personalize your interactions and introduce yourself. It's going to help spark conversations, and you'll be much more likely to make a memorable impression. Be unforgettable and personable and you'll sell more art.

More tips like this are in my book Artprenuer, available for pre-order now!

Life's lessons can come from unexpected sources. Looking back on my days working on Wall Street, I realize I was marketing myself even when I was an employee. So no matter what kind of work you do: for someone else, or for yourself, marketing matters.

Marketing is about making yourself memorable.

What we're unpacking in this episode:

  • Extracting marketing lessons from my experience on Wall Street
  • What you can learn about selling art from purse parties
  • Refining your presentation skills and elevator pitch

There are so many more nuggets to be taken from this experience that I share here, such as knowing your clients and understanding how to present your art in terms that excite collectors versus the way some of us default to describing styles and mediums of art. I share a story about how the host shared her art collection with me, and it's a great example you don't want to miss.

People always collect art that has special meaning to them, and the more you can talk about your own personality, your own values, where you're from, the more likely you're going to connect…

227: How Artists Represent Feelings

9 min
View

Many artists credit their work as a way to manage or deal with anxiety, depression and other forms of mental illness. Since October is Mental Health Awareness month, I wanted to share the stories of artists who found a way to deal with their illness by creating art.

Yayoi Kusama and Confronting Anxiety

Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama is known for her polka-dot art. She has been open about her mental health and shred that art has become her way to express her mental problems. In her words "I fight pain, anxiety, and fear every day, and the only method I have found that relieved my illness is to keep creating art."

I feature her in my upcoming book Artpreneur when I talk about embracing your inner weirdo. Many artists suffer from anxiety and it's one of the reasons that I have mental health experts on the podcast.

You can pre-order Artpreneur here.

Edvard Munch and The Scream

Edvard Much painted the scream a few years after his father passed away. He shared that the weight of the world had suddenly hit him. Growing up he was surrounded by death and depression and himself suffered with mental illness himself.

He said, "art comes from joy and pain, but mostly from pain." I can relate to this. Maybe the art comes from pain, but it brings me great joy. Do you feel that way too?

Artist Agnes Martin and Mental Illness

Agnes Martin painted in a minimalist style but considered herself an part of the abstract expressionist movement. She suffered from hallucinations, depression and was often hospitalized and eventually diagnosed with schizophrenia.

She used subtle color and meticulously drawn grids to create a calming effect. About her work she said "art is the concrete representation of our most subtle feelings.

Her work is also part of the Paul Allen billion-dollar art action at Christies later this month.

Abstract Artist Mark Rothko on Overcoming Sorrow

Rothko's striking color combinations are meant to be meditations. He wanted to create art church's where people could look at art and pray.

He said "I'm interested only in expressing basic human emotions and the fact that lots of people break down and cry when confronted with my pictures shows that I communicate those basic emotions. The people who weep before my pictures are having the same religious experience that I had when I painted them.

Art has a spiritual effect on me. Does it affect you that way too?

Let me know what you think.

Artist Paul Klee on Relieving Stress

Klee was a multi passionate artist who studied art and the violin. He was in his 30's before he focused on his art career. Even then, he changed his style often to defy categorization.

He believed that creativity comes from beyond consciousness and that making art was a form of mediation. He said, "I paint in order not to cry."

Why do you create art? I'd love to know.

225: Art Auctions Fall 2022

10 min
View

It's going to be a busy fall in the art auction world.

Paul Allen's Art Collection Headed to Auction

The late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, was an avid art collector and it's all going to auction. It's valued at 1 billion dollars.

What can you get? One of my favorites is Gustav Klimt's Birch Trees. It inspired me for more than one of my collage musical tree paintings.

You could also grab Georgia O'Keeffe's White rose and works from Agnes Martin and Louise Bourgeois.

There doesn't seem to be a recession when it comes to major collectors. This is expected to sell for the highest ever in art-auction history.

Grace Hartigan and the Ninth Street Women

Her work received new attention when it was part of an exhibit in Denver. She was also featured in the book Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art.

Elaine and Willem de Kooning

Elaine de Kooning was an accomplished landscape and portrait artist active in the Abstract Expressionist movement of the mid-twentieth century.

I knew about Willem and Elaine de Kooning, but I wasn't aware that they had such a turbulent history. The couple had what was later called an open marriage; they both were casual about sex and about each other's affairs. They separated for years to reunite again later in life.

Elaine's art reflected the turbulence similar to today's world of conflict and uncertainty. You can find out more about her influences in the book Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art.

Check out other books on my book club list here.

MoMA Plans to Auction off $70 Million in Art This Fall

The proceeds are going to be used for digital art and to create a streaming channel. The museum has a wait and see approach to NFT's but many others are all in. Check out my interview about this topic and how some artists are benefitting from the trend.

How Blake Jamieson Makes Money Selling NFTs

Did you know that my book Artprenuer is available for pre-sale? I've got the best bonuses for those who purchase early including a trip to NYC for a coaching session with me. Don't miss out. Grab the book and the bonuses here.

You can always use more ways to sell art, and I love sharing more ways for you to make extra money from your art. I shared 3 Quick Cash Strategies for Creatives in a previous episode, but today I'm bringing you another fun and simple way to quickly sell more art.

Today, I'm going to give you the rundown on how to sell more art from an open studio whether it's indoors or outdoors!

"The number of people who buy versus the people who show up are always much higher, [...] most people who do show up are going to buy."

  • What's an open studio strategy
  • Why are open studios a great way to sell your art
  • How and what to sell during an open studio

If you're considering new ways to make money as an artist, an open studio can be a great way to showcase your works in progress, your finished pieces, and any other items you may have such as calendars to sell. It's a small and more intimate setup, so remember it's okay to expect smaller numbers of people, and that means you'll want to create an experience that's inviting and great for collecting art.

"If you don't have something that they want, now's a good time to take a commission."

This week my briefings were all related to my visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art where they have a number of exhibits representing the black experience in art.

Ceramic Face Vessels

Museums have been making an effort to reset the balance of their exhibits and the artists promoted. It's part of the response to the social justice movements and subsequent conversations about the lived experience of non-white and other unrepresented artists.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art had several exhibits that highlighted previously overlooked artists. One of my favorite exhibits were ceramic face vessels.

If you're visiting (or planning to visit) the Metropolitan Museum of Art, be sure to check out my secret hack that will allow you to skip the long lines at the main entrance.

Seneca Village Artists

I checked out the new exhibit called Afro-Futurism at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. That's where I learned about Seneca Village. It was a thriving community until the land was appropriated for the park and the museum. The exhibit attempts to portray what might have come from the artists if the village had been permitted to thrive.

I'd love it if you'd leave me a review for the Artpreneur Alexa skill. If you do, email a screen shot to hello@schulmanart.com and we'll send you my eBook Unlocking Your Style as a thank you.

Representing the Black Experience Through Sculpture

While at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I came across an exhibit I was not expecting called Why Born Enslaved. It's a single sculpture by artist Jean Baptist-Carpeaux.

He created this sculpture after emancipation in America and 20 years after slavery had been abolished in France as well. The sculpture is beautiful and it's also a reminder that this woman was depicted as a slave in what could be considered an example of a white man's vision of a woman in bondage.

It's a good reminder that context is always a part of the artist's vision.

For more on that topic, check out two great podcast conversations: How to Be an Anti-Racist Artist and Poverty Mindset, both with artist Erica Courdae.

Race and Winslow Homer

I visited this exhibit with two other artists from the incubator. We all loved his painting called Cotton Pickers. It's a beautiful painting and we all felt that Homer depicted the two women in a powerful way without trying to romanticize the era.

His watercolors are all realistic, and he captures the expressions of the people in his paintings in a realistic way.

If you'd like to learn to paint watercolor portraits you can get my new Portrait Painting eBook (free!) that has my 5 steps, plus my recommended list of supplies to get you started.

Get Paid to Write Poetry

When I left the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I walked past a man with a typewriter and a sign that said poems $2. I was intrigued and asked him to write me a poem.

He asked me to share a bit about myself and he wrote a poem just for me. You can follow him on Instagram at j.d.b

My book, Artpreneur The Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Sustainable Living from Your Creativity, is now available for pre-sale. It's for poets and artists everywhere.
