Looking at all the ways you procrastinate is a great way to uncover if something more serious is going on that you'll need to address. You can tackle the things blocking your time for art, but unless you efficiently manage your time and your energy you may actually miss bigger issues going on.

I recently had new business cards printed up for those in-person events when people can't see my name on the Zoom screen.

There are other ways to share info. QR codes come to mind, and I was recently made aware that you can get a chip embedded in your hand that people can scan with their phone.

Business cards can be helpful when you are meeting people in a social or network setting. Hear the 3 ways I use them to connect and keep in touch.

The Rise of the Product Drop

Technology is changing how companies are launching all types of products. Artists should pay attention to this effective strategy.

Using exclusivity to create demand is good news and good business for artists.

Artists Tell Instagram ' Stop Tryin to be TikTok'

Instagram creators are NOT happy. Over 300,000 people signed a petition complaining about the recent changes. Emphasizing video content instead of the graphics and photos that we all loved has created havoc for many artists and other businesses.

The problem isn't algorithm changes. The problem is relying on social media sites to reach your new and existing clients.

I've been telling everyone who'll listen to create your own platform (hello email list!) so you can always reach those who've raised their hand to get your info.

What do you do when trolls, haters or critics leave negative comments? Well, this is the nature of being in a digital world. Everyone online has an opinion and some of them seem to make it their mission to leave negative comments and reviews.

There's a difference between constructive criticism, feedback, and comments that challenge you in a productive and respectful way. However, comments that offer absolutely no value can hurt, especially if they detract from your content.

In today's solo episode, I'm giving you 8 ways to better deal with the haters, the critics, and those pesky trolls so you can stay inspired and continue sharing.

The very first way to deal with negativity from the mean trio of online commentators, is to just anticipate it. You know they're out there, and the sooner you make peace with the fact that these kinds of people exist, the better your perspective and ability to handle those comments when you see them.

If all you have is positive reviews and comments on your work, it may indicate that you're playing too small. Everyone from Brene Brown to the Dalai Lama receives negative comments, and you're no exception, so anticipate it and don't be surprised by it.

Official Obama Portraits Unveiled at the White House

The White House held a ceremony to unveil the official portraits of President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. Better late than never, right?

Artist Robert McCurdy painted the official portrait of President Obama. He tells his subjects not to smile and to look directly into the camera to capture a transcendental moment.

Michelle Obama selected artist Sharon Sprung. Mrs. Obama's statement about how a girl like her was never meant to be in the White House is inspiring.

Portrait Artist Sharon Sprung

The identity of the presidential portrait artists is top secret, and it's usually revealed about a year after a former president leaves office.

Sharon Sprung painted the official portrait of first lady Michelle Obama. Although she completed it in 9 months, she had to keep the portrait and the fact that she'd done this important work secret for over 5 years!

She was inspired to paint portraits by the early death and memory of her father.

She's outspoken, opinionated, talented, and not afraid to let her art reflect her passions.

Enslaved Potters

There is a new exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art - Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina.

One of the items exhibited by artist Dave Drake is a piece of pottery signed with his name Dave and the word "concatenation"

When I was researching and writing my book, Artpreneur, I was intentional about being inclusive. Too many books about art only talk about white, cisgendered men. Sharing the story of artists like Dave is important to inspire the next generation of artists.

The Art of Nellie Mae Rowe

The American artist Nellie Mae Rowe was in her 60's when she began to transform her Atlanta home into what she called her playhouse. It became a destination for artists until she passed away in 1982.

Should Instagram Get to Censor Art?

Whether we like it or not, they are.

Their guidelines explicitly allow for real world art that depicts sexual content. Some artists are being banned completely.

A good example: The Little Black Gallery in London had their entire account deleted for a congratulatory post that had a silhouette image of a woman.

Artists need a platform to be seen.

I ran into an issue when I tried to promote my watercolor class Go Figure. This course will help you paint realistic and natural human figure, and my very non-explicit image was considered too explicit for Instagram.

Why Art is Now Boring

Do you like art that's interesting, pushing boundaries or boring vanilla art? I know you all want interesting art. So why has art become boring?

Journalist, Michelle Goldberg wrote about the new book by W. David Marx Status and Culture: How Our Desire for Social Rank Creates Taste, Identity, Art, Fashion, and Constant Change

Goldberg shares that the book highlights how we use art and fashion to demonstrate our social status, but the author no longer thinks it's no longer working. Why? Several reasons but one of the biggest is the ability we have to fake our "image" with filters or by photoshopping ourselves next to a private plane.

The Dark Side of Matisse

The Red Studio Exhibit shows the famous Matisse painting of his studio. The exhibit pulls out each piece of art and other things in the room.

It's made me aware of a backstory that I didn't know until now. The nude painting depicted is likely that of Matisse's daughter who would have been 16 or 17 at the time.

It makes me see this in a new light. What do you think?

Big Eyes: The Art of Margaret Keane

Margaret D. H. Keane (born Peggy Doris Hawkins, September 15, 1927 – June 26, 2022) was an American artist known for her paintings of subjects with big eyes. She mainly painted women, children, or animals in oil or mixed media.

Her husband was originally credited for her work, but she claimed ownership after they divorced. They had to have a "paint off" in court so she could prove it was her work!

A resurgence of interest in Margaret Keane's work followed the release of Tim Burton's 2014 biopic Big Eyes which I highly recommend.

Artists are beautifully creative people and I believe that all artists can make a living and thrive from their art. There's personal work that needs to be done with your mindset, and skills that need to be learned such as marketing, building your email list, and learning how to attract the right audience and paying clients, but it can be so rewarding.

Today's episode is from our 200th episode coaching party where Shaun Roney and I answer questions that were submitted. Shaun is our mindset maven in the Artist Incubator Program. She helps artist with the mindset piece, and more specifically she helps people with neurodiverse brains manage their focus.

What you believe about yourself, about the process, and about the people sharing key insights with you leads you to results or to sameness. You have to decide what to believe and what to think for yourself.

The New York Art Scene Circa 1962

There's an exhibit called New York 1962-1964 covering that 3-year period of art in the city. It was a time of epic changes, and the exhibit explores the way artists documented the era.

Looking at art through the lens of the events during that time frame reminds me that what's happening in our world impacts how we see and experience events which affects our expression and the art we create.

Does the Supreme Court get to decide: What is Art?

This fall the supreme court is going to hear a case about Andy Warhol's paintings of the artist known as Prince. Specifically, the legal concern is if the images violate the copywrite law with a portrait of the musician.

Essentially, they are deciding "what is art?" Why is this coming up now? The Andy Warhol foundation has licensed work that was originally based on a single-use license.

Take Yourself Seriously as an Artist

Did you read any books written by July Blume? Her book Are you There God, It's me Margaret was instructional for me as a young 4th grader. A movie based on the book will be released in 2023.

This was the first of 29 books written by Blume but when this was published everyone, including her husband (at the time) laughed at the idea that she was a writer.

Not Judy. She knew she was a writer.

It's time to re-write your story. Start taking yourself seriously. I want you to choose to believe in yourself as the artists, the writer, the creator that you are.

Your Friends Shape Your Mindset

A new study from Harvard found that poor children found that kids who had friends from across class lines has better outcomes that those who didn't.

I became friends with a group of girls, and we decided that we were gifted. We talked about becoming poets and artists and though I am not in touch with them now, I found out that is exactly what happened for at least 2 of them. The seeds of who we were and who we became were planted during those 6th grade friendships.

Our friendships shape what we see as normal. It helped us all believe what was possible for us.

There are so many hurdles to jump to get into an empowering mindset that allows you to charge what is right with conviction, and it starts with you and how you see money and financial choices. Serena explains why you have to stop seeing your pricing as expensive and start seeing it as expansive. A great way to start is using the examples here to replace "harmless" language.

Fight for Your Art Dreams

100 years ago today, the 19th amendment was signed giving women the right to vote. It's also the anniversary of Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream Speech."

Why the Goal Beyond the Goal is Important

What is your big goal? Is it big enough? Think of a goal as your destination, and they beyond goal to keep your expectations high.

A goal that excites you is much more likely to keep you motivated. We know that our thoughts create our feelings which in turn, determines our actions and results.

Finding Your Artist Spark

Harvey Dinnerstein, Proudly Realistic Painter, passed away at 94. He documented the early days of the civil rights movement in evocative drawings. Later, his paintings examined details of the everyday life around him. Hear how current events prompted him to use art to chronicle the people in the civil rights movement.

He had to stop teaching when the pandemic hit, but he never stopped creating. Hear his philosophy on finding the artists spark in the absence of inspiration.

How to Evoke Emotion with Your Descriptions of Your Artwork

Many lingerie brands use descriptive words that connote romance, seduction, and sex to describe their products. The Natori brand went in a completely different direction, appealing to modern women who want to feel sophisticated. Their marketing copy is crafted accordingly.

Successful brands use feeling words to describe their product. Instead of being perceived as a commodity, Natori counts on us feeling good about ourselves when we wear their brand.

People will pay more for a product that makes them feel good and gives them pleasure. This is one of the things I break down in a chapter of my upcoming book.

Is it Worth it?

I recently moved to a two-bedroom apartment in NYC. I love our life here, but I find myself dreaming of more windows and natural light. While preparing to move in, I found out there was an extra window that had been intentionally covered by sheet rock for a specific design aesthetic that the previous owner wanted. Is it worth knocking down a wall for the extra light?

Is it worth it is a question I hear in my artist community. Is it worth it to create a website for my art? Is it worth it to continue painting if I'm not selling much work? Is a show in the city worth it?

Is there a window hidden behind the wall in your life? I believe it's always worth it.

Are We Born Artists?

Arnold Skolnick designed the iconic poster for the famed festival in 1969. He actually did it in a weekend after the first design was rejected by the local merchants. He was paid $12,000, a hefty sum in 1969 to be sure.

Skolnick is also known for his belief that "you don't become an artist, you either are or are not." I'd love to know what you think. I've shared this on Instagram and would love your insights.

Keeping Up With What's Working Now

When I was getting ready to sell my suburban home, I had a rude awakening. I was told that my brown furniture was out of style and I was even asked to remove some of it. Then I decided if brown wasn't working then I'll paint it all white.

A friend asked me how I knew what to do. Honestly, I didn't. I asked at the hardware store and with some painful trial and error, I figured out a method that worked for me.

I've had 25 years of trial and error making a living as an artist. My incubator is where you can get the short cuts and insights and the benefit of the lessons I learned along the way.

What Artists Can learn from the Venice Biennale Curator

This is the world's longest running, large scale survey of contemporary art. It is looked to locally and internationally to discover the next new great artist. The curator is Cecilia Alemani, and I went to hear her share her insights about the exhibition. She went into detail about how she made the multitude of decisions involved in this exhibit.

Hear how she uses a 3D layout and how she chose the name for the exhibition in addition to how she selected the art itself. Her strategies are something you can use as well.

Classic Artist Mistakes

On the upper west side in NYC, there's a "flea market" every Sunday. I have checked it out a few times and I wanted to coach some of the artists so that they could sell more art and make more money.

1. Collect addresses to follow up – this is too not be doing it.
2. Offer to keep in touch. I had to ask an artist multiple times how I could connect with him in the future. Make it easy!

Where Can You See Bansky in New York City

I recently saw graffiti art here in NYC by the street artist Bansky. He's from Great Britain and in addition to his art, he is also an activist. Banksy is a pseudonymous England-based Street artist, political activist and film director whose real name and identity remain unconfirmed and the subject of speculation.

He combines existing items into his art. If you are in NY, you can see his art on the south wall on the Designer Show Warehouse at 79th street and Broadway. The owner of the building has taken steps to preserve the art, so hopefully it will be there for many more years.

The Art World remembers Edmonia Lewis

I love to find the most interesting stamps when I go to the post office. Nothing wrong with the flag, but why not find something more interesting? In February during black history month, I bought some stamps featuring Edmonia Lewis. Check out her story.

She was the first sculptor of African American and Native American (Mississauga) descent to achieve international recognition. Her father was Black, and her mother was Chippewa (Ojibwa) Indian.

She has a fascinating life story and despite a number of setbacks she never stopped creating art. You'll be inspired by her story and her tenacity.

Forget Perfectionism in Your Art

Let's talk about the deliberate mistake. In many handmade Persian rugs and carpets, you will discover the deliberate mistake. Followers of Islam believe only Allah makes things perfectly, and therefore to weave a perfect rug or carpet would be an offence to God.

Unlike many careers you can commit to, art and creativity is unique for many reasons. You may find other skillful careers people do as a side hustle in addition to their day job, but unless it's creative work, how many accountants are doing taxes because it just feels good to their soul and their mental health?

Art releases dopamine, it is therapeutic, and often it's a form of self-expression and self-care. The list of benefits for amateurs and professionals are equally powerful.

When you're just getting started and getting your feet wet in a new space, it's natural to look around and study the industry standards and norms. Obsessing over what you should do, how you should look, how you should be showing up can be paralyzing. Even worse, when you arrive and no one there looks like you, the thought of running away is hard to ignore.

Think about this…

There is no one path into art. There is no standard or art norms that should keep you from playing with and pursuing what makes you come to life. Art is healing and beautiful and has a universal song that sounds different to every artist out here.

Artists come in many shades and complexities from countless paths to find the creative spark that brings them to life. Today's guest, Joy Ting Charde, ignited her creative spark as a way to communicate with her teacher and other students when she was new in the U.S. and couldn't speak English.

Even still, her journey to art came after becoming an elementary school teacher. Not having professional training, working a full-time job that she actually enjoys is the part of this artist that is perhaps most relatable and familiar.

Using photography, projectors, and tracing is a secret most portrait artists won't talk about, but it's been used by artists in some form since as early as the 1600s, if not earlier.

In this episode, I share how famous artists such as Johannes Vermeer, who painted The Girl with a Pearl Earring, and Norman Rockwell, an American painter known for his illustrations, also used photography and projection to create portraits.

I am convinced that watercolor is the medium for creating portraits, and if you've never done so before, my Watercolor Portrait Academy gets into more details. You can watch me paint, and you can learn how I use these techniques to create amazing portraits.

Knowing this taboo technique is a game-changer for so many people. A few things I think you'll need to know about watercolor and this artist's secret is:

As frustrating as it may be, you cannot be in a creative state of flow 365 days a year. When you identify as a creative, that can feel like a heartbreak and a bit of an identity crisis, and yet it's a perfectly normal part of life.

You won't always feel like you're in perfect balance, and there are days that we all feel hopeless and think, I've lost my creativity for good (being dramatic time to time is totally fine). Building your art business gets stressful real fast when it takes you beyond the comfort of creating art. Still, marketing, sales, and engagement are a necessity for any person building a business.

Why should you know your brand archetype as an artist? You have your own style and preferred medium of art, so is branding and archetypes really important? After all, you're possibly running ads, you're staying on top of social media posts, and you have your own art collections for sale and available for purchase. Maybe you've even set up a few funnels to grow your business.

This is part of the continuing "what's wrong with" series. I want to make sure that when you engage using Instagram, that it's effective for you. I'm sharing 5 things I see people doing that just don't work. Hear what they are, along with the steps for your Instagram makeover. What works on social platforms changes and this is a great time to check your account and make sure you are up to date with the most current and effective practices.

5 Things that are wrong with your Instagram account:

• No link in bio. Your bio is the most important part of your Instagram account since it's the only place where you can have a live link. Use it well! Hear the 3 best ways to make this work for you.
• Your account is private. When someone goes to check out your Instagram page and it's private, you are creating a barrier that doesn't have to be there.
• Gaming the system. There are a few things that people do on Instagram to try and "game" the system. Buying followers, following/unfollowing, or using an automated system. Some of this violates terms and conditions and you may even risk account shutdown.

• User pods. This is one of those things that sounds like a good idea, but won't give you the results you want. It's not a good use of your time, and it won't bring the engagement that will help you grow your reach.
• Your avatar is not a picture of you. People want to engage with a real person, not a brand. Show up as a living, breathing human.

Improve your Instagram account and watch engagement and followers increase. Make your posts and your investment of time there worthwhile.

1. Pop-ups. Hear how to improve your pop-up for more opt-ins with specific examples for the best way to get your pop-up to convert.
2. Apologizing. Take the approach that people want to hear from you, and they want to know about your work.
3. The Menu Bar. Be thoughtful about your menu options. I outline two easy fixes are updating the about and sale menu tabs.
4. Gallery tab. The art that is for sale should not be under a gallery tab.
5. No way to purchase! Don't create obstacles to sales. I share 2 website providers that make this easy.
6. Clarity in your offer. A confused mind never buys. Get my best insight about the best way to curate what you sell.
7. Clearly state shipping information. I've outlined 3 options that work, pick one so your buyer knows exactly how their purchase will be shipped.
8. Outdated information. Old events, past courses, pricing specials that have expired are making your site look neglected.
9. Pronouns. Maintain consistency in your copy. I recommend your site be written in first person. Even if you use third person, it's key that it's done site wide.
10. About page photos. Another place for consistency. Listen for the 3 things that make a huge impact here and the one photos that always needs to be on your about page.

Why is it dangerous to get hung up on passion?

There is no supposed to. If pursuing your passion is no longer working for you, Terri explains that it's time to give yourself permission to move on.

Artists I talk to run into this. They often ask "what should I paint?" What's more important is making a choice. Doing the work and making the effort is what makes you an artist. Evolving over time is part of the journey.

Today I'm talking to one of my clients who started her art career when her husband gifted her with art classes. She was hooked and decided to continue. She went to weekly classes and painted daily because she felt like she had to catch up with others. That was 20 years ago and she's still creating.
