Jane Goodall sits down with Jay Shetty to talk about her passion and love for nature and wildlife. She believes that all of us have the power to make a difference around us and impact our surroundings significantly. And as we continue to hope in the most trying times of our lives, when we take action, this hope turns into change, into a success, and into a celebration.

Jane is an ethologist known for her long-term research on the chimpanzees of Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park. In 1995, the University of Cambridge awarded her a Ph.D. in ethology, one of the few candidates to receive a Ph.D. without having first possessed an A.B. degree. She established the Jane Goodall Institute to help support the Gombe research and the Roots & Shoots program for the youth to actively participate in environmental, conservation and humanitarian issues.

When we can’t decide on something or make an important decision about something big in our lives, we often seek advice from others. We ask for people’s opinions on what they would do if they were in the same situation and how they would go about resolving the issue at hand.

And as we listen to their opinions, we get a sense of enlightenment, a sense of direction. And most of us often tend to listen to what they have to say. But sometimes other people’s opinions don't offer the best help simply because these opinions were given without thinking of the consequences it will have on our lives.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty talks about the types of advice we can seek from others to help us handle difficult situations but also learn how to make small decisions on our own.

Perhaps, it is easier to tell someone to be brave and to do something they haven’t done before. It’s easier to be that encouraging voice on the side cheering for them. But it isn’t as easy when you’re at the receiving end, when you’re the one being encouraged to do something you’re uncomfortable doing.

It takes courage and an open mind to do something you’re hesitant to do because it’s outside of your comfort zone, especially when it’s something you never thought of doing out of fear of failing or getting rejected.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty talks about how doing small uncomfortable things can gradually lead you to embracing changes and improving yourself.

“I hear you. I understand that this is difficult for you. What can I do to help?” These are the words we desperately want to hear when things don’t work out in our life. We expect our partners to be there for us, to understand what we are feeling and why we are feeling these emotions.

However, some of us don’t get to hear these words. Some of us don’t get the understanding and support we need. Some of us could no longer connect emotionally with the people we love. And this disconnection is putting a strain on our relationships.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty shares principles for us to be an effective communicator so that our partner, our family, and friends can tap on deepest emotions and so that we can tap into theirs.

You are blocking your own growth. Not your work, not your boss, not your partner, not your family, not even your culture. No one else but yourself is blocking you from reaching your maximum potential.

Yes, this is the truth. Many of us blame other people, our circumstances, our disadvantages in life, or the lack of influence we have on others to make things work for us, to achieve the things we want to achieve without realizing that all of this unobtained dreams and undeveloped potential are caused by our own lack of focus on our own growth.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty talks about the most common ways we fail to develop ourselves because we often lose focus on what we truly care about and what will make us grow.

We often want to be recognized for what we did well and not for our mistakes. If we keep hearing the things we did wrong over and over, we tend to see them as truth and eventually keep repeating the same mistakes.

This is where most relationships struggle because people often focus on the wrong, the mistake, the unsightly character instead of appreciating the good traits, the commendable actions, and the everyday effort our partners put into the relationship.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty talks about looking past the negative aspects of your relationship and learning to pick out what can make it work.

Perhaps the hardest word you can say to someone is NO. Saying YES to something, even if it’s half-heartedly meant, is easier because you aren’t obliged to justify it. The pressure is less, and so it’s easier to say so.

Whereas, if you say NO, there is this need to justify why you said that and why it isn’t possible for you to do anything at the moment. The guilt for refusing will haunt you. At the back of your mind, this guilt will pressure you to eventually give in. When you eventually give in, you won’t feel good about yourself because the situation is forcing you to do it.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty talks about how to say NO without feeling guilty and why you need to say it clearly and openly.

In every relationship we have, we often set expectations. When these expectations aren’t met, we feel unloved and uncared for. And sometimes, we feel that it’s not working and that it isn’t true love.

What we fail to realize is that our expectations are based on our standards, our own ideals, our own terms. OURS, not theirs. It’s one sided. We want the other person to meet our standards, ideals, and goals; but we never consider THEIR own expectations of us.

In this episode of On Purpose, Jay Shetty explains why setting unrealistic expectations only leads to a failure in your relationship and builds up your insecurities.
