Operation Barbarossa (Encore)

14 min
View

On June 22, 1941, German forces crossed into the Soviet Union. It was, and remains, the largest military operation in human history. The force that the Germans assembled for the invasion was staggering, consisting of over 3 million men.

However, the decision to go to war with the Soviets and break the alliance Germany had with them has puzzled historians for decades.

It ultimately was an extremely costly failure that resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of people.

A History of Lead (Encore)

13 min
View

Sometime around eight to nine thousand years ago, ancient people in Asia Minor found a very dull grey metal that turned out to be easy to manipulate when it was heated.

For thousands of years, it was used for a variety of purposes, including as a food additive.

4

With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, even more uses were found for this unique metal.

However, by the 20th century, scientists realized that maybe this stuff wasn’t really so good for us.

Learn more about lead, how it has been used throughout history, and how our perception of it has changed on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Solar System is a pretty big place. When most people think of our Solar System, they probably think of the Sun, the planets, and all their moons.

However, the solar system is much larger than most people realize. In fact, it is vastly larger than the model they have in their heads.

Only in the last few years, with the advent of larger telescopes and better techniques, have we been able to learn more about the outer edge of our Solar System.

Learn about the Kuiper Belt, Oort Cloud, and the outer reaches of the solar system on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Reign of Terror

16 min

For a 10-month period from September 1793 to July 1794, the nation of France went through a period which could only be called insanity.

Tens of thousands of people were imprisoned, and thousands met their end with what the French called madame la guillotine.

We like to think of the Earth as a very stable place. While there might be seasonal variation in the weather, things don’t really change that much within our lifetimes.

However, if you take a longer perspective, a much longer perspective, things can change a lot.

In fact, there have been five times in the history of the Earth when life on Eath completely changed. When over half of the species on the planet completely disappeared.

Learn more about the Earth’s mass extinction events and what caused them on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

If you happen to live in the Northern Hemisphere, April is a time when days get longer, the temperature gets warmer, and things start to become green again.

It is also the month of National Unicorn Day, National Superhero Day, National Take A Wild Guess Day, and, of course, National Hairball Awareness Day.

More important than any of these august holidays, it is the month where I answer your question.

Stay tuned for another episode of Questions and Answers on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Crimean War

In the mid-19th century, Europe saw what was perhaps its largest war since the end of the Napoleonic Wars.

The war was ultimately fought over who would pick up the pieces of the failing Ottoman Empire. However, every country that fought in the conflict had its own unique reasons for doing so.

What no one could know at the time is that the war would usher in changes that would affect the future of warfare forever.

The Knuckleball

15 min
View

In the game of baseball, it might not seem at first glance that there is much strategy involved in the game.

However, there is an enormous amount of strategy that goes into every pitch in the game.

Pitchers have different pitches in their repertoire, which can rise, fall, and curve on their way to the batter in an attempt to fool the batter.

However, there is one pitch which is unlike any other. It is so challenging that only a tiny percentage of pitchers in history have ever thrown it.

Learn more about the knuckleball, how it works and why it is so rare on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The History of Military Ranks (Encore)

Every military in the world is a hierarchical organization. There are people at the top who make decisions, people down below who follow those orders, and people in between who make it happen.

Today, most militaries have an elaborate rank structure with multiple ranks in the chain of command.

However, it wasn’t always like that. The modern system of ranks evolved over time, and the ranks that exist today have origins that go back centuries.

One of the most common food items consumed today are cruciferous vegetables. Even if you aren’t familiar with the term, you almost certainly have consumed some before, and there is a good chance you do so on a regular basis.

What many people don’t know is that these vegetables are actually rather modern.

Early neolithic humans never ate broccoli, cabbage, or Brussels sprouts because humans invented these foods.

The History of Whaling

Whaling is something that humans have engaged in for thousands of years.

For most of that time, indigenous groups conducted it on a small scale for survival purposes.

Over time, whaling became commercialized, the annual whale harvest exploded, and whaling became a cornerstone of the early industrial revolution.

Alas, it couldn’t last forever.

Earth’s Magnetic Pole Reversals (Encore)

11 min
View

Once every 450,000 years or so, the Earth undergoes a radical transformation.

The planet’s magnetic field will literally flip. The North Pole becomes the South Pole and vice versa.

Despite the fact that we know this has happened many times in the Earth’s history, we really don’t know what would happen if the poles were to reverse today.

Learn more about when the Earth’s magnetic poles reverse on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Why is the Alphabet in Alphabetical Order?

14 min
View

All of you are familiar with the ABCs. It is one of the very first things that children are taught.

Not only are they taught the letters that comprise the alphabet, but they are also, usually at the same time, taught the order of the alphabet.

The order of the alphabet is something that is so ingrained that most of us usually don’t even think about it. Yet, if you think about it, the order of the letters is completely arbitrary, but if we didn’t have an order, our world would be very different.

Learn more about why the alphabet is in alphabetical order on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Battle of Gettysburg

13 min
View

In the summer of 1863, after two years of war, Confederate General Robert E. Lee felt it was possible to swiftly end the conflict by taking the fight to the Union.

Up until this point, almost all of the fighting had taken place in Virginia. Lee felt that by moving to the north, he could achieve several objectives that would lead the Union to seek peace.

His march to the north resulted in the largest battle of the war, which would ultimately be the turning point of the entire conflict.

In 1869, the world was shocked by a discovery that was made outside of the town of Cardiff, New York.

Two workers discovered what was claimed to be the remains of a 10 foot tall, petrified human being.

The claim set off a fiery debate between those who thought it was proof of the Bible and those who just thought it was a long lost statue.

It turned out, neither group was correct.

Lunar Eclipses

14 min
View

For as long as humans have been watching the night sky, they noticed that every so often, during a full moon, the moon would briefly go dark, or at least change color.

They often created mythical explanations for the event.

Eventually, this ancient people began to record its occurrences and were able to calculate when it would happen.

As we learned more about the universe, the explanation for the moon changing became less mythical and more scientific, but it was still a sight to behold.

The Crossbow

One of the most devastating weapons in the medieval world was the crossbow.

It evolved from early hand-held projectile weapons into a powerful tool of warfare that shaped battles for centuries.

It was one of the few weapons powerful enough to stop a fully armored knight.

Yet, despite its power, it wasn’t necessarily the most powerful ranged weapon on a battlefield and when something better came along, it was quickly replaced.

Artificial Turf

16 min
View

In 1965, the world’s first full enclosed sports facility, the Houston Astrodome, was opened to the public.

The Astrodome itself was a marvel of engineering, but because it was enclosed, the grass that was initially planted soon died.

It was replaced with artificial grass, which was basically a synthetic carpet that looked like grass but played and behaved totally differently.

Today, the next generations of that artificial grass can be found in stadiums all over the world.

Learn more about artificial turf, how it was created and improved over time on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

Hydropower

14 min
View

For thousands of years, humans have used the power of water to do work for them.

At first, it was very simple, then it gradually evolved to more complex and more efficient devices to harness the power of water.

Eventually, we were able to harness some of the world’s largest rivers to produce incredible amounts of power for millions of people.

Despite the advanced hydropower systems that exist today, there are still small-scale uses available as well.

Learn more about how humanity has harnessed the power of water on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Maginot Line (Encore)

13 min
View

After the First World War in France, many generals thought that the end of the war was really just a pause before another war began. They wanted to make sure that the next time war broke out with Germany, they were ready and could never be invaded again.

To that end, they created a series of defensive fortifications they believed to be impregnable.

Spoiler alert: it didn’t work.

Learn more about the Maginot Line, why it was built, and why it failed on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

The Underground Railroad

16 min
View

Before the US Civil War, a group of abolitionists didn’t just sit around passively to wait for the end of slavery to arrive.

They took matters into their own hands. They set up a clandestine network that operated over multiple states to bring escaped slaves to freedom.

Their network wasn’t a top-down organization, which centrally organized everything. Rather, it was one of the earliest examples of a decentralized network where the members didn’t even know who else was involved.

Learn more about the Underground Railroad and how it brought thousands of people to freedom on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.

While geographically very close, and pretty much surrounded by Indonesia, Timor-Leste has had a history very different from Indonesia.

Their histories diverged when they became colonized by different countries and came to a head in the late 20th century.

Economic Statistics

Every month, or sometimes every quarter, governments around the world release economic statistics.

Markets will often wait for the release of these statistics, and billions of dollars of investments will often hang on what these statistics reveal.

While the announcement of economic data will often make the news, many people aren’t aware of what these statistics actually mean. Often times they reflect something totally different than what their name might imply.

The Mexican-American War

15 min

After several years of rising tensions, on May 13, 1846, the United States Congress declared war on the nation of Mexico.

The war lasted only two years, and the conduct of the war was decidedly one-sided.

The conclusion of the war resulted in changes to both countries, which can be seen on the map and felt on the ground today. Yet, despite being one of the most important conflicts in the history of both countries, it has been largely forgotten today.

How the Dutch Reclaimed Land From the Sea

14 min

The Netherlands is unlike any other country on Earth.

What sets the Netherlands apart from every other country isn’t its size; it's the fact that 17% of the area of the country was once in the sea.

Turning the sea into land is no easy feat, but it is something that the Dutch have been doing for centuries. Not only have they expanded the territory of the Netherlands, but they have also created a system that protects the country from flooding and storms.

Learn about how the Dutch managed to reclaim land from the sea on this episode of Everything Everywhere Daily.
