When we recorded this episode I had a cold, and somehow imagined my voice to be much more froggy than in reality it sounds. I'm glad, though my overall stuffiness probably caused me to participate less than usual. Fortunately, we are joined by Monika from CompassioKnitfor the final segment of the show. We talk about knitting for charities, and about Monika's CompassionKnit charity located in San Francisco. If you are looking for a way to give to charity for the holidays or at any time of year, knitting for charities is a great option. Monika's CompassionKnit Ravelry group can be found here. - Sharlene

The Yarniacs Episode 173: Winding Yarn!

70 min
View

In this episode, Gayle and I talk about a task that some knitters seem to have a fear of taking on... winding their yarn! Why the fear? I am not sure, but working in a yarn store, I meet many knitters who tell me they aren't smart or patient enough to wind their own yarn. Hmm. I don't think winding yarn takes superhero brain powers or a large dose of patience. I think it does take a bit of practice, and a familiarity with the tools you have at your disposal. Whether you are winding by hand from the back of a chair or winding yarn on a well crafted wooden ball winder, winding your yarn affords the opportunity for the knitter to learn something about their yarn. This is a good thing! You have the chance to learn if you like the way the yarn feels as it slips through your fingers; you will learn if perhaps this blend dries out your skin; you'll find out if this particular skein has a knot five yards from the end. All good things. Of course there will always be times when you don't want or can't wind your own yarn; or perhaps you have an injury or physical limitations. But it behooves us all as masters of our craft to at least know how to perform this function, and to know how best to utilize the tools we have at our disposal. Wind on, my knitters! - Sharlene What are we wearing? Donner by Elizabeth Doherty Sharlene's Donner Free Your Fade by Andrea Mowry Gayle's Fade What are we stalking? This should make things easier to find! This episode we discuss how to remember make one left and make one right; Sharlene's technique to "close the gap" on circular bind-offs; and using stitch markers to assist when casting on a large number of stitches.

You know that feeling when all the patterns start to look the same? Maybe you can't bear to look at one more garter stitch striped shawl? It happens to all of us. I call it "pattern fatigue." One of the great things about the robust pattern database on Ravelry is that we are exposed to so many fantastic patterns. One of the reasons we experience pattern fatigue is that robust pattern database on Ravelry. It works both ways. In this episode we talk a little bit about experiencing pattern fatigue, vacation planning and knitting, and of course, all our usual segments. Enjoy! - Sharlene What are we wearing? Though I don't consider myself to be fashion forward in what I choose to wear--you will usually find me in jeans and t-shirts--I do have fun watching fashion trends and fashion designers and their work. I also love color, and the Pantone fashion colors and colors of the year are always fascinating. Sometimes they are right on, sometimes not so. But I often find the colors readily available as ready-to-wear clothing and in yarn palettes from the major dyers. With this in mind, we start our annual Colors-of-Fall Knit-A-Long. In this episode, we introduce the colors, and talk about some fashion trends we've spotted online. Enjoy! #yarniacsCOF2018 #yarniacs #yarniacspodcast - Sharlene What are we wearing? I also love color, and the Pantone fashion colors and colors of the year are always fascinating. Sometimes they are right on, sometimes not so. But I often find the colors readily available as ready-to-wear clothing and in yarn palettes from the major dyers. With this in mind, we start our annual Colors-of-Fall Knit-A-Long. In this episode, we introduce the colors, and talk about some fashion trends we've spotted online. Enjoy! #yarniacsCOF2018 #yarniacs #yarniacspodcast - Sharlene What are we wearing? It was a bit of a creature fest when we recorded this week. Cats and birds making appearances. Partway through the podcast, my bird makes herself known by ringing her bell. And ringing again. I didn't realize the microphone would pick it up as clearly as it did, so for a couple of minutes, please imagine there is a little bird ringing her bell in the room with you. :) She's a happy bird. The Yarniacs Episode 161: Stitches West!

This year we recorded little snippets each morning at Stitches West. It was a fun way to recap what we saw and share what we were stalking each day. There aren't many links, but there are a couple of fun stories about our adventures, followed by a discussion on sweater maintenance. Changing seasons and changing clothes seasonally gives us a chance to wash, inspect, and maintain or pare down our sweater cache. And as you will hear, paring down the sweater cache is necessary, if you keep bringing new and pretty yarns into your yarn stash! This week I share my knitting triumph. What is a knitting triumph? If I were writing a novel it would be the denouement. The what-what you say? The denouement is the "final part of a play, movie, or narrative in which the strands of the plot are drawn together and matters are explained or resolved." (Thank-you Google dictionary.) Doesn't that sound perfect for a sweater? Especially one that has been in the planning for a year, with yarn purchased and pattern ready to go. My strands are all drawn together, my ends woven in, and I have something lovely to wear and share. I am really proud of this accomplishment. I am sure you all have your own triumphs as well. Sometimes a knitting triumph isn't a long-awaited sweater, sometimes a knitting triumph is something as simple as finishing a hat for a friend, or pulling those needles out of a long dormant project and freeing them for something new. What is your knitting triumph? Join us on Ravelry and share in the episode thread! - Sharlene

Wayne's World! Wayne's World!

It's party time excellent! With that party anthem, we welcome you to our 6th anniversary party episode! If you haven't heard of Wayne's World, it was a 1992 movie that grew out of a recurring sketch on NBC's Saturday Night Live. Full of party references, Gayle and I chuckle every time we remember it, and thought the "Party on!" theme perfectly reflected the joy we feel in celebrating our sixth anniversary. This episode is a little different, with a party twist on our regular segments. We hope you enjoy it and want to thank-you so much for coming along on this crazy podcasting ride with us. We've found more yarn, more patterns, and more joy than anticipated during the past six years. Party on Sharlene. Party on Gayle. Party on Yarniacs! What would we wear to a garden party? We are ending 2017 with a light-hearted episode recorded with our lovely Ravelry group moderator Robbie, aka Photoknitgal. An episode that has been several years in the making, we finally get to introduce Robbie to our listeners and Ravelry group members. (Photo taken in April, 2017 at The Yarniacs NoCKRs retreat. All three of us are sporting our lovely Donner sweaters!) This concludes another fun year of podcasting for Gayle and I. We are at the harbor for our annual holiday lights episode, though this year we were a little too early in the day for the lights. :) But we did have some sea life sightings so it all worked out. This episode we talk a little about the upcoming Self-Indulgent Knit-a-long which has become an annual Yarniacs event. Please see our group on Ravelry if you need more information and join in the fun. Please use the hashtag #SIKAL2018 for your social media needs. You'll notice we mention the Pantone Color of the Year. I think the news about the 2018 Color of the Year must have hit social media about the time we were recording, so if you haven't heard by now, check the link below to see the gorgeous Ultra Violet! You know that I am going to knitting this color. (Of course, you also know that I would be knitting this color even if it weren't Color of the Year. I just happen to have some in my stash. Ha!) Please see our group on Ravelry if you need more information and join in the fun. Ha!) Wishing everyone a happy holiday season! - Sharlene What are we wearing? November has brought the beginning of our sweater weather season here in Santa Cruz. Every year, the changing of the clocks to standard time seems to coincide with the fall chill and Gayle and I have been happily looking through our sweater stashes and greeting our sweaters like old friends! In this episode, we continue the conversation about yarn labels and how to use the information given on a label. Very few of us use the recommended yarn for a pattern with every project, so at some point, we all find ourselves looking for substitutions. Though often considered part of the fun of starting a new project, it can also be fraught with indecision when faced with an unknown fiber or unknown gauge. We hope to share a few tips for success, and hope you will share some of your tips with us as well. The discussion can be found in the episode thread for our Ravelry group here. Please join us! Last night I noticed it was getting dark earlier. Fall is a subtle season, sneaking up on us a few minutes each day. In my neighborhood, I noticed a tree that was already losing leaves. Bunches of leaves were blowing down the street in the late summer afternoon breeze. It is late summer's twilight, and though the temperatures are still high, soon we will be pulling out warmer clothing, blue jeans; jackets; and long sleeves. Maybe a warm sweater or shawl. If you've been knitting something for The Yarniacs Colors of Fall KAL it is time to start figuring out your outfits and how to photograph your look. We're baaaack! :) And so excited to be here. Thanks Helen Stewart and Andrea Mowry for helping hold down the fort during our summer activities and travels. We do hope you enjoyed episode 143 with Helen Stewart, and episode 144 with Andrea Mowry as much as we enjoyed recording them. (Hint: we had a lot of fun recording both!) Gayle and I are finally back in the same room (okay, back in the same car for recording purposes) and we can't stop smiling. When we listened to the episode before releasing, we both commented that we sounded like we recorded the whole episode with smiles on our faces. Yes, we were that happy to be knitting and talking and sharing our knits with all of you once again. Though our friendship started independent of knitting, it has been forged through the projects, the search for the perfect yarn for each project, our travels, and of course, through podcasting. This episode, we share the story of another friendship brought together by knitting that has taken another creative path. We share a fun friendship-inspired collection of patterns called Minnesota 52: 16 Knits inspired by the road. We hope you will enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it! Party like it's Knit like it's 2014! Why 2014? Well Gayle and I find ourselves both knitting stash and planning for stash that was added to our stash in--you guessed it--2014. Thank-you Ravelry. I still find it amazing, awesome, and maybe a little bit scary to have that information available at my fingertips, but more power to the ever-increasing stash, right? So while we are both knitting up 2014--for the second episode--we also share a bit about how we find new projects for those lingering yarns that haven't been matched up with their perfect patterns yet. Enjoy, and happy knitting everyone! - Sharlene What are we wearing? Newsom by Bristol Ivy Confetti by Veera Valimaki What are we stalking?
