In this first episode of the new year, we come to you from the west cliff area of Santa Cruz on a sunny afternoon. We spotted several sea otters during recording and enjoyed our time in the sun. I think hats are great little projects. You can knit a challenging charted cabled hat, or you can knit a simpler stockinette in-the-round hat. You can knit a hat in chunky yarn and big needles, or you can use up the leftovers from a skein of sock yarn with tiny needles. If the hat doesn't fit, you won't have invested too much time, and hey–it's a hat. It will fit someoneafter all. So if you aren't too particular about whether you end up with an exact size, you can forgo the swatch and just start knitting. That is the way most of my hats this year came into being. No swatch, match yarn to needles, figure out a cast-on number that will fit someones head, and go. They are all going to charity organizations so I have no doubt each hat will eventually find its way to a head that it fits. In addition to it being the cold weather season, it is also the season of holidays, of being busy, and often being pulled in too many directions at once. I find that quick small projects satisfy my need to keep my fingers busy and my compulsion to knit, as well as provide satisfaction of finishing something useful. When I teach, I like to start knitters on hats because there is a lot to learn in the making of the humble hat. You cast on, learn your knit (and maybe purl) stitches, you decrease, then you bind off. All in one small package. I find a beginning knitter has a higher chance of success with a smaller project. I like to give my students the best chance for success. So yes, even though Gayle and I are sweater knitters, we do find out thoughts turning to hats every year about this time. In episode 122 we recorded our last summer episode for the season out and about. The light is changing and it will be darker earlier, making evenings of recording in the car difficult. This time we were on the UC campus at the top of the hill. We didn't see a lot of the usual wildlife, but we did stop for a peek at this spectacular view as we were leaving. This is the view looking towards Monterey and it is probable that a lot of the bright red is caused by smoke due to the still burning Soberanes fire. It's that time of year again. What time of year is that you ask? It is when the folks at Pantone release their fall colors list. These are the colors that influence fashion, what will be appearing in the stores this summer for fall wear, and what colors we'll see on the new yarns coming to the local yarn stores. Most knitters love color! And yes, I am including knitters such as myself who happen to love the greys! (Check out that Sharkskin color chip on the palette and how well is goes with every other color. What's not to love about a beautiful grey?) So take a look at the palette, check if you have any of those colors represented in your stash and play along! Do you knit when you are sick? Whether or not I can knit when I am feeling under the weather is my usual "heat check" to tell exactly how sick I am. If I don't, can't, or aren't feeling well enough to knit, then I and everyone around me knows I am probably feeling quite poorly. When we recorded episode 106, I knew I wasn't feeling 100%, but it was a few days later that this cold really took me down. I've tried to stick to my usual routine as much as possible, but there has been less knitting, more reading, and more tea drinking than usual. Though I am still coughing, and sound a bit froggy, I am much better than I was last week. It is small progress, and we are moving in the healing direction. I'll take it! Speaking of moving in the right direction, have you noticed the days are getting longer? We are also moving towards the spring equinox on March 20, 2016. Are you being self-indulgent yet? In this episode, we welcome Rachael Herron, author of the Cypress Hollow series, several mainstream fiction books and a non-fiction collection of memoirs. Our regular recording time is sometimes bumped by one of our work schedules, which was the case this week. So it was a surprise to me when Gayle texted me the afternoon of our regular recording day to find out if I could meet later that evening. Though it meant finding an impromptu spot to record in the car, we quickly decided to give it a try. It was dark, so we drove down to the harbor in hopes of finding better lighting. What we found was a holiday treat! The annual lighted boat parade had taken place this past weekend and the boats were still dressed in their holiday best! It was lovely to sit and watch the boats bobbing up and down giving us a little holiday light show. The beginning of November has finally brought us the beginning of sweater weather, and as we delightfully exclaim this episode "When you're cold, you're cold." No apologies for putting on sweaters as the thermometer dips below 68º this episode! In fact, we are rather gleeful to pull our old friends out of storage and welcome them back into our wardrobe rotation. (In fact, though I didn't mention it on the podcast, this editor is planning on wearing her big oversized Traveling Sweater later on this evening at an event.) And can I just add how wonderful it is to have shawls to drape around myself when I feel a chill? It's our season knitters and crocheters and if I have one piece of advise to give, it is this. Wear those knits! Don't keep them tucked away for "someday," or wait for the perfect outfit, or keep them reserved "for good." You invested time and money, so if you've made something lovely for yourself, wear it with pride. In episode 101 we return to our regular segments and catch up on what we have been wearing, stalking, knitting, and finishing. These are our comfort segments, and as we enter the busy holiday season, it is good to focus on simple things that bring us pleasure and delight. What are we wearing?

It is said that first babies see movement, and soon can distinguish shades of blacks and whites, with other colors eventually becoming recognizable. As children grow, color often seems to play a role in their definition of self. "My favorite color is red," or "What's your favorite color?" are oft-heard conversation starters with the "under 10" set. Working in a yarn store, I commonly see shoppers carrying around yarns in colors that either match or complement the colors they are wearing. Some folks are surprised when I point this out. Others just smile and agree, that yes, they are always attracted to the same colors. We are surrounded by color in design, fashion, and logos. Certain colors are appetizing, while an off-color food can spoil your appetite. School and sports team colors can inspire confidence, unity, and pride. When we dress for success, we attempt to present ourselves through style and color in a favorable way. Even the daily news is filled with stories about color related to race, gangs, and identity. There's no denying that colors represent meaning, memories, and emotion; can affect commerce and how or where we spend our money; and influence our moods and feelings. If you've ever been unable to move forward on a project because you can't pick a color, or decided against purchasing some yarn because there wasn't a sweater quantity of that perfect color, then you too have witnessed the important role of color. In this episode Gayle and I scratch the surface on color talk and why we love our annual Colors of Fall Knit-a-long (KAL). I often think that Gayle and I talk too much about the weather. Really, on a knitting podcast, who wants to hear about the California drought? But it is undeniable, the weather, the drought and other external factors affect the items we knit. September and October are often the warmest months of the year for us, with temps peaking at 100°F but dipping at night into the 40s. This past summer was so hot and winter is an unknown. Whether El Niño brings us needed precipitation, or even cold temperatures remains to be seen. But for now, the occasional foggy day or brief rain shower brings smiles to our faces. Stangers comment to each other about how wonderful it feels to have a chill and some moisture in the air. It's a common thread in all our lives.

One of the lessons I have learned from stalking is that I have stalked many, many patterns that I did not cast on or never want to knit. There are patterns I want to knit for myself or someone else and then there are patterns that I like to look at, or like to look at the projects. Stalking for eye-candy's sake only. I think that distinction is important. Not everything you stalk is necessarily something you want to make. You can be an appreciative fan of a certain pattern, or of a certain knitting skill--think fair isle or intarsia--but not necessarily want to knit the item yourself. This is perfectly valid. :) Julia Trice is a knitwear designer. Julia shares with us a little of her stash handling techniques, specifically how she handles "personal" stash and "business" stash. Julia - aka mindofwinter on Ravelry If you keep stash, having a pleasing and efficient way to store your yarns is very important, and will influence how you feel about your stash. Do you feel pleasure or dread when you need to find that one skein of sock yarn that you purchased two years ago? Do you like keeping your stash in moth-proof boxes away from the light or out in the open for inspiration? In addition to curating stash, having an organized and useful system for storing and finding things is important. Gayle and I both rely on the basics--boxes, cabinets, and drawers. We both have loose organizational systems that seem to work for us and help us find yarns when needed. We hope you enjoyed this episode and as always, thanks for listening and happy knitting! One of our favorite podcast segments (and we hope yours too!) has always been "What are we stalking?" Project planning and choosing yarns are often one of the highlights of a new project. At that point, it is still a knitting fantasy, and every knitter has an active knitting fantasy life. If you have a Ravelry queue the grows weekly, then yes, you too have an active knitting fantasy life! But sometimes those fantasies don't turn out the way we planned. A well-curated stash that we are happy to own is important to every knitter and crocheter. Is something about your stash making you unhappy?
