This 80th episode of The Yarniacs launches us into our 4th year of this podcasting adventure. What an adventure it has been! We have learned about wool, about yarn, about designing, about technique, and of course, about community. The community we have formed on Ravelry with our fellow yarniacs has been the most fulfilling and wonderful part of podcasting. We can't thank you all enough for listening, for participating in our knit-a-longs, for chatting, and for playing along with us in social media. Truly, you have enhanced our knitting lives. The Clover stitch holders are one of Gayle's favorite tools. Favorite yarns we worked with in 2014 Sharlene enjoyed working with fingering yarns, specifically single-ply fingering from Western Sky Knits and Dragonfly Fibers. Sharlene used the single-ply fingering for her Headland and her Hitofude Cardigan. Gayle also used a lot of Western Sky Knits yarns including the silk/merino blend that she used for her Puck Shawl and her Obsidian Pullover. I mention Halloween because I happen to own the quintessential Halloween advertising animal, a black cat. When we adopted Boo, we were told by the shelter staff that black cats and dogs are the least adopted color at most animal shelters. Boo was the last adopted kitten from his litter, also the only all-black kitten in the litter. Folks want cats with some color or markings we were told. Previous to our Boo adoption, I had no clue about this color bias, but some internet sleuthing revealed that it is indeed a fact. So, if you are ever in the position to adopt a shelter animal, that is one tiny fact to keep in mind. Consider it a friendly PSA (public service announcement) for black cats and dogs. :)

I know that our small retreat will mean a disappointment to some who can't attend--I feel it myself when one of my online friends hosts an event or goes to an event that I can't attend. As we started the first few discussions when we realized we could make this retreat fantasy a reality, we just didn't know what to expect--will it be a handful of us knitting together, or a whole room full of like-minded crafters sharing ideas and yarn? I wish I could host these events all over the country and come and meet each one of you in person and thank-you for listening and participating in the Yarniacs community. Similar to wool, Gayle and I have a lot to learn about garment design and how designers do the magic they do. Like our wool series, we'd like to start an occasional series with designers, the work they do, and how they do it. Our guest today is Wendy Bernard, author and designer of the popular Custom Knits series and the Knit and Tonic blog. Wendy also has a fabulous stitch dictionary Up, Down, All-Around Stitch Dictionary. This is a stitch dictionary with a twist--each stitch pattern includes instructions and charts to knit from the top or the bottom. If you have ever switched up a pattern to knit it top-down as I have, you know what a cool resource this is for a knitter! If you've ever wanted to add a little bit of bling to an edging, or change a ribbing to something other than k2 p2, then this resource should find a way onto your bookshelf. One of my favorite features of this book is the index that organizes stitch patterns by multiples, making it easy to swap out the stitch pattern on a hat or garment edge. We recorded episode 56 at the beach. Sometimes evening recording calls for inventive recording locations but we always enjoy the views. This time we were lucky again to spy some dolphins swimming in the bay. No matter how many times I see dolphins frolicking, they still bring a smile to my face. Gayle and I are attending a local fiber industry event called Stitches West this week. We will be there several days and it is the one big fiber event that we attend every year without fail. We have a brief chat about buttons, our button choices, and how we personally choose buttons. We mention a few things to be aware of when button shopping. Oh, the holidays, they are a-coming! Here in the US, this week is busy. We are getting ready for our Thanksgiving holiday, there are school holidays to work around, and the general business of planning, family, and work. The original title of this episode was going to be "Road Trip" for reasons which will become apparent once you listen. But even the best of plans have a way of falling apart sometimes, don't they? Thwarted by the heat of the 100 degree day, our plans to record while visiting yarn stores went out the window, and the secondary plan to finish recording once we returned to the bay and its cooling breezes flew out the other window after Gayle got the "come rescue us!" phone call from her stranded husband.
