Welcome to The Return of the Premier League, a brand new three-part documentary series telling the story of how football returned amid the Coronavirus pandemic, hosted by Melissa Reddy.

Over the next three days, we'll explore every facet of the top-flight’s suspension in England and subsequent Project Restart plan. On today's episode, we look into just how seismic the stopping of the game was and how football wrestled with the unfolding events around the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis. 

We hear from expert voices from around the game including Bournemouth and Wales defender Chris Mepham, former Newcastle player Ryan Taylor, football finance expert Dr Rob Wilson and journalists Darren Lewis and Vaishali Bhardwaj.

A few days ahead of the game’s 24th anniversary, comedian Mark Watson joins us to remember one of England’s most iconic victories on today’s episode of the Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. 

As Jonathan frantically scrambled from a university exam to catch the game, Terry Venables’ England side prepared for a crucial game in Group A of Euro 96. After the infamous night out in Hong Kong ahead of the tournament, then the disappointing 1-1 draw with Switzerland in the opening game, a win was crucial for the hosts. Mark, Jonathan and Marcus revel in their heady memories of a glorious summer of football – perhaps best encapsulated by Paul Gascoigne’s moment of genius as he nonchalantly flicks the ball over Colin Hendry’s head and smashes it home. It’s not just the Premier League that’s returning next week but also the Premier League narrative. Mikel Arteta is preparing to return to The Etihad to face old boss Pep Guardiola and we are all EXCITED. West Ham are getting ready too, with a massive mosaic. To whom will this mammoth task fall? Is it not vulnerable to mischief making? So many questions need answering. 

Leagues One and Two have voted to end their season so we have lots to say about that, while also taking in a surprise visit from Shaquille O’Neal and having a lovely chat about Sir Les Ferdinand flirting with Juventus on football’s new dating app.

How we’ve missed Brendan Rodgers. With the Premier League’s return just around the corner he’s talking about “emotionally activating” his players and taking inspiration from Phil Jackson of The Last Dance. Yes. Yeeeeees. This is what we want, and it’s all so close. 

The Premier League have also discussed setting up a Celebration Cam - a camera for players to celebrate into - which is why they get paid the big bucks, while in the Bundesliga we got our first taste of artificial crowd noise and frankly the jury is out.

We’re looking back at one of the most infamous seasons in Serie A history on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Writer and musician Dan Carney joins us to discuss the 1964 title-deciding playoff between Inter and Bologna!

Nobody would have expected Bologna to be challenging for the Serie A title at the start of the 1963/64 season, since their previous title came in 1941, while Helenio Herrera’s famous Grande Inter side was among the favourites. What followed was an era-defining Serie A title race, featuring drug scandals and points deductions, that ended in Inter and Bologna finishing on the same points. There was only one thing for it: a championship tie-breaker at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico!

This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of the fantastic First Division play-off Final that’s the subject of today’s Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Geneticist, author and broadcaster Adam Rutherford joins us to discuss Barnsley 2-4 Ipswich, the last club game at the old Wembley!

After Ipswich were knocked out in the three previous play-off semi-finals, they arrived at a Wembley on the back of a 7-5 aggregate win over Bolton in the semi-finals. They must’ve worried misfortune would strike again after just six minutes into the final, as a Richard Wright own goal put Barnsley ahead. But, on the back of some classy technical operators that had impressed all season, Ipswich pulled it back, with Adam and all his family cheering on in the sunshine.

We’re back with the second part of our extended Ramble Meets… interview with former Liverpool, Fulham and England midfielder Danny Murphy! On today’s episode, we rejoin Danny’s story when he left Charlton and joined Martin Jol’s Tottenham.

Danny talks to Luke about how the initial differences with Jol gave way to problems in his family life that ultimately hampered his career in North London. He then swapped North for West, joining Fulham, and they reminisce about the club's journey to reach the 2009/10 Europa League final under Roy Hodgson. They also discuss what it’s like challenging a manager whose philosophy isn’t working, wonder whether he could have achieved more and remember Clint Dempsey’s unbelievable reaction to being told he’d been dropped on the day of that Europa League final.

The Bundesliga continues to deliver, with positive results for all of our beloved teams - Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, Bayer Leverkusen and FC Koln - as well as big wins for Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Such merciful release. 

Back in rumourland Mauricio Pochettino is making it clear that he’d be happy to manage in the Premier League again and those Rafa Benitez to Newcastle rumours just aren’t going away.

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we remember one of the most iconic Champions League finals of the modern era. We’re joined by celebrated commentator Clive Tyldesley, who was in the gantry for the game at the Camp Nou, to discuss the 1999 Champions League final! 

Manchester United’s victory over Bayern Munich ended English football's long wait since their last continental triumph. It also sealed the treble for United that, rather than through imperious dominance, was won via a series of ridiculous comebacks across the season. Bayern themselves produced a remarkable comeback in their semi-final against Dynamo Kyiv and, with five minutes to go, looked to have written their name on the trophy. Clive joins us to discuss his experience of commentating on this iconic match where, with the introduction of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and the pressure building, the seemingly inevitable happened.

With the Bundesliga playing its first round of matches in ten weeks, and the Premier League refining the details of ‘Project Restart’, we discuss the significant differences from normality on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. Cologne-based journalist Archie Rhind-Tutt joins us to reveal what it was like to report from Eintracht Frankfurt, as press access was restricted and social distancing rules were firmly applied.

The Bundesliga’s return to action was a strange but very welcome success this weekend, with Erling Braut Haland particularly unfazed by recent events or seemingly anything. 

Football is also back in South Korea, but that wasn’t what’s been making the headlines due FC Seoul’s decision to fill their stands with “premium mannequins”, which look a lot like sex dolls. Oh no.

In Scotland Celtic may soon be crowned champions, in Italy Mauricio “Smoky Maurice” Sarri’s habit may be even worse than we thought and here in England we have some tips to help Steve from last week get his ball back.

We look back at one of the famous sides of post-war Europe on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Journalist and author Dominic Bliss joins us to discuss the Grande Torino side and their 5-3 win over Atalanta in the 1946/47 Serie A season.

After managing Torino in 1939, Jewish coach Ernő Egri Erbstein had to return to Hungary as the Second World War begun. He saw no alternative but to volunteer himself to work in fascist labour camps to try and survive – after six torturous years where he and his family endured the worst of the Hungarian holocaust, he managed to escape the camp and stay alive. After the war ended, he returned to Torino and coached a side that had won two Serie A titles since his departure, on the back of his central European counter-attacking football that was so prevalent at the time. Dominic joins us to discuss Erbstein’s remarkable life, his return to Turin and his place among the pantheon of great Hungarian coaches.

We’re so close to football! The Premier League watches on with interest as the Bundesliga returns with potential lessons for our own Project Restart. It could be June, with a list of “cultural changes” implemented. We’re not sure who is implementing them, but there are definitely a few people we’d like to see kept away from that process.  

There are also rumours, since denied, that Jose Mourinho has been trying to derail the whole thing as he continues his transformation into a Bond villain, Harry Kane being a lovely chap and a desperate plea from a listener who asks the age old question; can I have my ball back?

So, the Premier League have ruled that 'null and void' and finishing a season with no relegation are off the table, meaning the season will be concluded in one way or another. We discuss this news on today's episode of Jules & Andy!

We have all the latest on the latest meetings about meetings! To be fair to the Premier League that’s about all they can do at the moment as we seem to be no closer to a concrete plan. That doesn’t matter though, because Louis van Gaal has decided to keep us all entertained by calling Ed Woodward an “evil genius” and “inviting” Jose Mourinho to explain why it only took four days for him to replace him at Man United. There’s a beef stew bubbling away here. 

In Turkey Besiktas have installed a disinfection cabinet at their training ground and the thing looks like some amazing futuristic tech, so naturally we posit some alternative uses, while we also look forward to the Neville brothers taking each on in some televised garden centre challenge under the new rules and learn that we may be more of an aphrodisiac than we realised. Oh no. 

We also love Dave Bautista. We just love him and we don’t care who knows it.

Football is BACK! In Germany. On May 16th. The Bundesliga have confirmed their plans to resume the competition, not without some controversy, and we’re all looking forward to seeing some live football again. 

Away from that actual news we have a very salty show today, inspired by Andres Iniesta and his baby-making goal against Chelsea in the Champions League in 2009, which apparently led to a spike in births 9 months later. This week he had video chats with some of those kids. Is that weird? That seems weird.

Elsewhere Gary Neville shows that he’s even a tough but balanced pundit when defending his city from disgruntled ex-Man United players’ wives, Alan Pardew reveals his bafflement at Dutch players wanting to know what to do on the pitch and Kuno ‘Santiago Muñez’ Becker wants to right the wrongs of Goal 3.

We're not just immersing ourselves in any old atmosphere on today's retrospective episode of At The Match – we're off to sample one of the most intense atmospheres in world football.

In November 2018 Andy travelled to Italy for a Serie A blockbuster weekend, which concluded with a trip to sample Luciano Spalletti's Inter revival. At the San Siro, he caught up with coach and pundit Kevin Cauet, who discusses what it means about being part of the Inter family and the fans that have kept the club going through leaner times. He also talks about his father Benoit, who signed for the Nerrazzurri in 1997, and recounts his tales of training with Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio.

We shine a light on some underappreciated contributors to European football on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, alongside BBC and Okko Sport contributor Sasha Goryunov!

Sasha joins us to discuss the standout game he remembers from a childhood growing up in the Soviet Union, as Spartak Moscow ensured they won the 1989 Soviet League with victory over Dynamo Kiev. Dynamo were managed by the revolutionary tactical thinker Valeriy Lobanovskyi, who was among the early adopters of computers for statistical analysis and a pioneer of pressing football. He lined up against the 35 year-old Oleg Romantsev, the coach who brought an air of calm to the Spartak dressing room. What unfolded was a chaotic game rounded off by a Valeri Shmarov free-kick worthy of winning any title.

More decisions have been made in Europe as Ligue 1 decides to give the title to Paris St Germain. It’s not yet confirmed if they’ll also give them next season’s title but let’s be honest, they might as well. 

There are also rumours that the Premier League will resume behind the closed doors of the remote and impenetrable St George’s Park fortress… but those rumours appear to have come from WhatsApp voice notes.

On top of all this we’re pitch for Neil Warnock to join the cast of Gogglebox, Marcus and Pete are having some troubles in their long distance relationship, Tim Sherwood annoys everyone and Dave Kitson annoys everyone.

Is football coming back anytime soon? It’s proving impossible to say definitively. As the Premier League’s ‘Project Restart’ gathers momentum, Ligue 1 has announced that they will not attempt to finish this season, after the French government banned gatherings of large people until at least August. We break down that news on today’s episode of On The Continent!

This decision has brought on yet more worries for French clubs and the precarious financial states some of them are in, with €600m owed in outstanding transfer funds to those clubs. We discuss their situation as well as developments from Spain, where Julen Lopetegui voiced concerns about the mental and physical demands on players in lockdown, and Germany who are cautiously planning to restart the Bundesliga. Don’t worry, there’s also a portion of meaty football chat; we work out where the likes of Edinson Cavani, Dries Martens and Gonzalo Higuaín may end up plying their trade when football eventually returns!

Just how many times can Kevin Keegan be brought back to St James’ Park to restore some of the feel good factor to Newcastle? At least three, it would seem. He’s being lined up for an ambassadorial role as the looming Saudi takeover continues to loom.

What with football on a lengthy hiatus due to COVID-19, and us all stuck inside as a result, we thought we'd take a look back at some of our favourite episodes from past series of At The Match!
