We’re back for some North London heartbreak on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. BBC Sport’s Gavin Ramjuan joins us to discuss Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final!

After transitioning out of the Invincibles era, this Arsenal side had become incredibly solid defensively – they only conceded two goals on their route to the final, during which they dispatched Real Madrid and Juventus. They met a Barcelona side that, though it had the early shoots of their infamous Pep Guardiola side, was not up to the same standards. Sol Campbell put the Londoners up with a powerful header but, after Jens Lehmann’s red card and fatigue began to set in, a Henrik Larsson-inspired comeback saw the Catalan side win only their second Champions League trophy.

In which we learn that David Moyes has been keeping busy delivering shopping to the elderly. He’s really enjoying it too! Could this eventually lead to him retiring early and becoming a village handyman? Stranger things have happened.

Over at UEFA HQ they’ve made a decision about how the various domestic leagues will decide on qualification for European competition… and it’s that they’ll decide it themselves, on merit. Put more simply, they’ve said “you sort it out”.

As well as all this the Saudi takeover of Newcastle United edges closer, but company man Richard Keys has some misgivings, and as ever they are purely and wholly honourable. We also hear a suggestion to help the NHS and open up the Time Tunnel, where we revisit Tim Sherwood’s lowest point.

Tino Asprilla has offered to make drone deliveries from his condom company to help people who need them in this difficult time. Not all heroes wear capes, but some of them have their best ideas at 4am. 

Tino isn’t the only one trying to find solutions, though. We’re delving deep into the annals of history on today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. Archivist, researcher and Blizzard copy editor Kat Petersen joins us to discuss Austria 2-0 Germany from 1938, with geopolitical tensions at fever pitch.

Austria’s footballing and social landscapes were in a state of flux by 1938. The huge Jewish influence on football throughout the 1920s and 30s meant the Nazis treated the game with a certain suspicion, while the middle classes of Vienna established numerous clubs to try and formalise a game previously played on the streets. This match was played after Austria had been annexed by Germany and featured one of the finest footballers of the inter-war era: a humble and unassuming Austrian by the name of Matthias Sindelar.

Kat talks us through the context and endless myths surrounding this momentous game while detailing the extraordinary influence that Sindelar had on Austrian and European football of the era.

From supporting Manchester United at school until his friends forced his allegiances elsewhere, Marcus has loved football his whole life. He joins us to discuss his relationship to his hometown club, from wondering whether he could play for The Dons when they held trials on Wimbledon Common to cheering on from his car as they beat Luton Town and returned to the Football League in 2011.

He also tells us the story behind his recently released cover of 'You'll Never Walk Alone', with all proceeds from the song going to War Child and the Grenfell Foundation, and his work setting up War Child FC which uses football as a support mechanism for children living in places ravaged by conflict.

What can £200m get you in the current climate? One Harry Kane, or one genetically modified, bionically enhanced everyman, transformed into a world beater? This is just one of the questions we attempt to answer today, as there seems like no better rational response to these persistent rumours about Kane upping and leaving North London. 

That’s not the only squabble going on though, the president of the Gabonese FA wants Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang to leave Arsenal, a man has been spotted flouting government issued advice to chase a picnic umbrella and it’s all kicking off in Scotland.

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we look back to a match that represented a symbolic moment in the modern histories of two nations. The Sunday Times’ Ian Hawkey joins us to discuss Zimbabwe's first qualifying fixture for the 2014 African Cup of Nations, a match played in his then-local Harare. 

Bruce Grobbelaar, who hadn’t represented his native Zimbabwe for several years, was called up on the same weekend that the Premier League began and a bench spot under new signing David James beckoned. He decided to fly to Harare just three days before the game and, after much political deliberation around his dual citizenship status, he was allowed to play. This strengthened the side’s Premier League connection, as Coventry City’s Peter Ndlovu also played for the country and excelled in this game.

This marked the arrival of Zimbabwe’s ‘Dream Team’, a national side that will be remembered with a folkloric appreciation, as they dismantled a new-look South Africa side in front of nearly 50,000 fans in their national stadium and set their sights on a historic international achievement.

James has travelled to over 90 countries while writing the encapsulating football stories he’s become famous for, and this latest book documents another classic gonzo-style voyage to the inner workings of football’s ultra culture. He sits down with Luke to recount his experiences in the scene, from talking to the heads of ultra firms who typically hold disdain for the outside media, to being invited to organised brawls. 

James discusses his own moral dilemma in writing the book and presenting it for the reader to judge the stories, as well as the gambles he took with his own safety to get stories from some of the most dangerous fans in the world.

World Cup style camps. That’s the phrase that’s all the rage at the moment. The Premier League are continuing to look at ways to finish the season and good on them. Will we have a bizarre little behind-closed-doors conclusion to the season this summer? We just don’t know.

With travelling England fans in near-penal exile on the island of Sardinia, Italian authorities were incredibly anxious throughout the entire tournament about the prospect of more of the hooliganism that had plagued previous England away games. After Bobby Robson’s side stuttered through their opener against Ireland, he changed to a back three – which immediately paid dividends. They escaped out of their group and then knocked out a Belgium side who probably deserved to win the game, thanks to that cracking volley from David Platt.

We then discuss what initiatives clubs are running in their local communities to help those affected by the crisis, as well as getting to some correspondence – which features a few ideas on how smaller clubs might be supported in the future.

We’re back once again to find that football still seems to be a rich vein of absurdity even when there isn’t actually any football, and face up to the idea that our show might actually be better when there isn’t any. 

Admittedly this has been helped by some classic and very welcome outside-the-box-thinking from Ian Holloway, John Hartson’s “elaborate golf hole” idea and Torquay United discovering that they have a hell of an athlete among their ranks.

We're joined on today's episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, by The Athletic's Adam Hurrey! He brings to the table an iconic Champions League tie as Barcelona arrived at Stamford Bridge for the second leg of their Last 16 tie.

Barcelona ended up winning that season's La Liga in imperious fashion, and had the upper hand after their 2-1 win at the Camp Nou. The teams returned to London two weeks later, with José Mourinho naming the teams in the press conference leading up to the game. This tie served as a backdrop to the beginning of the totemic battle between the two managers, and the night featured a cocksure José Mourinho at "the perfect sweet spot of his arrogance" on one side of the ledger and, on the other, Ronaldinho at his dazzling, brilliant best. Yes, it's that goal.

European football has ground to a halt, but that won’t stop us recording a brand new episode of On The Continent on Football Ramble Daily!

Andy and Luke sit down to discuss Uefa’s decision to postpone Euro 2020 by a year, as their new working group to try and find room to reschedule the continent’s domestic leagues. Each of those various nations have their own strategies to combating the virus, as the Spanish FA’s Luis Rubiales lambasted La Liga sides for prioritising the testing their own players. 

Elsewhere, we look at some of the stars who will benefit - and those who won’t - from the tournament’s postponement. The likes of Leroy Sané and Dayot Upamecano will surely light up next summer’s tournament, while Luke spares a thought for Olivier Giroud as his recent resurgence would have helped his chances of leading the line for his country again. We finish up with some actual football, as Turkey’s season continues! In these troubled times, we need comfort; and that’s exactly what Turkey’s given us, as Demba Ba keeps on scoring and a groomed Martin Škrtel stuck one in his own net. Glorious.

We welcome a commentating legend to today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, as Jonathan Wilson and Marcus Speller are joined by Peter Drury!

Peter joins us to discuss a chaotic match from Leeds’ Champions League campaign in 1992, as European’s elite competition was changing beyond previous recognition – and with the Heysel Ban ending a few years previously. Peter remembers his fervent excitement while covering for BBC Radio Leeds as Leeds began their European journey full of optimism from their league title victory the season before, and featured the likes of Gordon Strachan, Gary McAllister and Gary Speed in their side. However, they were swept aside by an impressive Stuttgart side who scored three goals in a crazy half an hour, which signalled the beginning of a hugely difficult season.

Oof. Atletico Madrid picked a good time to remind us all of what they can do. A truly epic night of football at Anfield ended with a bewildered Liverpool going out of the competition. Will this setback stop them winning the league? No. No it won’t.

Despite the Coronavirus pandemic forcing more leagues behind closed doors, and some into mid-season postponement, there’s still plenty to discuss on today’s episode of On The Continent; Andy Brassell is joined by Lars Sivertsen and David Cartlidge to review this week’s Champions League action!

We then compare two recent continental signings and their vastly different impacts on the Premier League thus far, as Bruno Fernandes is already a fantastic addition to United, while Tanguy Ndombele faced further criticism from José Mourinho as he struggled in an inexperienced Spurs midfield. There’s even time for some correspondence, as we discuss the fallout around Charlton’s Jonathan Leko and what he felt was a lack of support from Kick It Out.

It’s another At The Match episode from Germany, but this time Andy and Luke wander off the beaten track, and out of the top flight. The plan was for Andy to experience some fourth-tier football in Wuppertal but, as Uli Hesse (or Pyrolator) will tell you, it always rains in Wuppertal. 

Undeterred, Andy makes the most of his trip to Cologne to take in a game at Regionalliga West side Fortuna Köln, spending the afternoon on the open terrace with home supporter Axel, who’s been watching Fortuna since 1973, as they take on Schalke II. We talk about following football in the fourth tier, what it’s like playing top-flight clubs’ B teams and Oliver Kahn’s ringing endorsement of Südstadion. It rains torrentially here too, so we’re not missing out on anything.

Then both Andy and Luke chase down Sunday lunch - copious helpings of currywurst, naturally - with an early afternoon trip to Bochum, where they dive deep into German fan culture. We hear about what makes Bochum stand out in such a crowded football region from Bochum ultra and filmmaker Gerrit and then witness an eight-goal thriller, perhaps the most thrilling match of our weekend.

There’s a Tottenham flavour in today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re joined by The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke to discuss the opening day of the 1994/95 Premiership season, as Spurs took on Sheffield Wednesday.

In his first full season in charge, Ossie Ardiles’ Spurs side looked to establish an exciting and intoxicating brand of football based on the technical skill of the European talent they acquired that summer. Ilie Dumitrescu and Jurgen Klinsmann were among those in this new-look, attacking Spurs side that played out a cracking match against Trevor Francis’ Sheffield Wednesday – featuring seven goals and one of the most infamous celebrations in modern English football.

An action packed round of FA Cup fixtures gave us drama at Spurs,  Chelsea exposing Jurgen Klopp as yet another bald fraud and a huge upset as Arsenal beat Portsmouth. 

Newcastle made it through too! They never do that! And on top of their win we also got to see 59 year-old Chris Waddle’s cool new hair. 

Away from the pitch, Pete promises to release some music aimed at kids while also making a niche request for some fanfic; we learn of Delia Smith making Daniel Farke feel at home with the personal touch; and try as best we can to figure out where the midlands is. Keep it real.
