Well! Nigel Pearson and Watford shocked us all by showing that this Liverpool side can be beaten – though in doing so they did shut down some of the little remaining Narrative of the season. All the same, Pete was at the game with a Japanese hotelier he knows and by all accounts a great time was had. 

Elsewhere, Daniel Farke and Norwich turned the tables and got a surprise win over Leicester, Jose Mourinho bemoaned a lack of fairness and Man City won yet another Carabao Cup. 

We also learn about the complicated eagle loan market, christen the Milk Shake Boys and plead that you send us meat.

It was big win for the little guy yesterday, as Man City beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu – but will the energy they exerted give Aston Villa a chance in Sunday’s Carabao EFL League Cup final? After another shambolic weekend of VAR, there was only one thing we could start with on today’s episode of Jules & Andy. As officials mishandle baffling clear decisions, we discuss the effect these mistakes has on players’ most visceral emotions while on the pitch and the lack of training for match officials. We also speak to former Premier League referee Peter Walton, who wonders whether the Premier League was even ready for VAR this season due to this lack of training and understanding.

It’s not all VAR chat, though, as we take another look at FFP in light of UEFA’s decision to ban Manchester City from European competition. We examine what the policy aims to achieve in a wider context, how it works in practice and how clubs can spend their money on vast improvements without breaking any regulations.

Today we take a look back at a game of genuine historical importance in European football history. On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re joined by The Independent’s Miguel Delaney to discuss the 1963 European Cup final between Milan and Benfica.

This pivotal moment in the history of the European Cup cannot be understated; it represented two dominant teams at opposite ends of their respective cycles. Milan arrived as purveyors of a free-scoring, but still pragmatic, catenaccio and regarded themselves as significant underdogs. But, with their manager Nereo Rocco’s pre-match antics on the bus helping to lighten the mood, two goals from José Altafini denied Benfica their third consecutive European Cup. This was an early example of modernity in football tactics; a team winning on the strength of a tactical system with eleven components, rather than relying on eleven individuals beating their opposite man.

It's a big week in the ol’ football, as European football resumes and Big Weng steps in to do something about the offside rule – something we’re all frankly a little unsure about. 

We even saw Liverpool lose, as Atletico took a 1-0 lead into their second leg match at Anfield, insulting the place as they did so. We’re heading back to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. The Guardian’s Jonathan Liew joins us to discuss the Netherlands’ 5-1 dismantling of Spain, as “Louis Van Gaal created something he loved - and then destroyed it.”

Spain arrived at this tournament with the same formula that saw them win the preceding three as the likes of Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Andrés Iniesta looked to dominate possession. They took the lead and controlled the early exchanges in El Salvador but, with Louis van Gaal switching to a back three for this game, his Netherlands side took advantage of Spain's lethargic midfield. We discuss a fantastic game that featured scintillating goals from Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben, and saw the end of Spain’s possession-dominating era.

We welcome a footballing icon to today’s episode of Ramble Meets… as Andy is joined by one of England's first black footballers, former West Ham striker Clyde Best!

After choosing football over cricket in his native Bermuda, and becoming involved in the national side when he was just fifteen, Clyde flew across to London for a trial with West Ham United and went on to score 58 goals over seven seasons. Clyde sits with Andy to discuss the horrific racist abuse from the terraces and how teammates like Bobby Moore and Harry Redknapp helped him through it. Clyde also talks about some of his favourite moments from playing in England, gives some advice to the current generation of black footballers and reminisces about managing the Bermudan national team.

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, we’re looking back at the heady days of the 1987 Littlewoods Cup. John Cross, the Mirror’s chief football writer, joins us to remember the semi-final second leg replay between Tottenham and Arsenal!

With Arsenal languishing in comparative mediocrity by the early 1980s, George Graham’s arrival begun a revolution at the club – and nowhere was this typified more than in this game. Arsenal, spurred on by the half-time announcement at White Hart Lane detailing how Spurs fans could buy tickets to the final, fought back to level the second leg and force this replay. John remembers this incredible game and its crackling atmosphere as David Pleat’s free-scoring Spurs side took on Graham’s resilient Arsenal for a place in the final against Liverpool, as well as the amazing story of David Pleat giving George Graham a lift home after a cup of tea and a sandwich!

On today’s Ramble Meets… episode, Andy Brassell sits down with Joe Palmer, CEO of AFC Wimbledon, to discuss his fascinating career in football.

Joe can trace his obsession for football back to the 1987 FA Cup final where his beloved Spurs lost to Coventry, and his love for the game has never wavered. After beginning his career at a PR agency selling stories for MUTV, Joe eventually found himself as the Executive Director of Strategy, Commerce and Marketing at Shakhtar Donetsk. He talks Andy through his incredible time at the club that began with Champions League knockout football and emerging stars, and ended with being evacuated from a developing war zone. Joe also discusses his current work with AFC Wimbledon as they are still searching for further investment to ensure the club can return home to Plough Lane this summer.

It’s Tuesday, and you know what that means: it’s time for another episode of Jules & Andy on Football Ramble Daily!

Y’all ready for this? On today’s Milk Football Ramble we say the word “Cumdog” a frankly uncomfortable amount, but Shrewsbury’s Jason Cummings has given himself the nickname, scored twice to bring his team back from 2-0 down against Liverpool and so has given us no other choice. 

Elsewhere in the cup, the Bilić is back as Slaven’s West Brom knocked out his former club West Ham, Newcastle put on a show for their potential new owners and Man United turned on the style.

On today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard we head back to another epic Premiership finale. The Irish Times' and Second Captains’ Ken Early joins us to remember Blackburn’s title win on the final day of the 1994/95 season, despite a 2-1 defeat at Anfield. 

Blackburn needed to win or hope title rivals Manchester United didn’t beat West Ham, to clinch their first title in more than 80 years. Many Liverpool fans at Anfield found themselves in the curious position of wanting their team to lose to Blackburn and thus denying their bitter rivals the title, as their treasured son Kenny Dalglish sat in the Blackburn dugout. Ken, Marcus and Jonathan remember the buildup to this pivotal final day that was the culmination of this season-long battle between the definitive Premier League juggernaut and their new challengers looking to halt a third successive title triumph.

It’s a meeting of minds on today’s episode of Ramble Meets… as Luke sits down with writer, broadcaster and Liverpool fan Rick Edwards!

Rick can trace his fandom back to "picking the red team” in the 1986 FA Cup final aged six, and Liverpool Football Club has remained a significant pillar in his life ever since. He joins Luke in the studio to discuss his passion for football that has followed him since standing on the terraces at Molineux with his dad, right up to to being left distraught when Liverpool lost the 2018 Champions League final. They also talk more generally about football’s reflection of society, the club vs country debate and how it seems men only feel comfortable expressing emotion while in a football crowd.

We’re headed up to Liverpool for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard, for a classic escape from relegation. On the docket today is the final day of the 1993/94 season, as Everton had their last roll of the dice against Wimbledon, and we’re joined by author and deCoubertin Books principle James Corbett!

After a fantastic period of success in the 1980’s, the turn of the decade brought about tougher times for the Toffees. Everton were actually one of the key five drivers in forming the then-Premiership but looked ill-equipped to deal with the change, after many senior players followed Howard Kendell out the door in the late 80s and early 90s. There were four other teams in the mix for relegation as the final round of fixtures arrived and, after going 2-0 down against Wimbledon, all hope looked lost - but Everton performed the impossible. The goings on at Man United are going on so much that they’ve reduced Sir Alex Ferguson to lonely red wine sessions in his old office, which may or may not be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s current office. They face Norwich at the weekend in a fixture more intriguing than it has any right to be. 

Spurs also host Liverpool, which should be a spicy one. Will we see Jose Mourinho attempt to park the bus? Probably, yes.

We’re back in the studio with some more continental content, as Luke Moore and Andy Brassell are joined by The Guardian’s Nicky Bandini!

We begin, as the man himself would expect, with Zlatan Ibrahimović’s largely uneventful debut for Milan. Nicky discusses how his leadership off the pitch might be more valuable than his contribution on it, as well as assessing Stefano Pioli’s struggles in the dugout. We also mention some struggles down south, as Gennaro Gattuso hasn’t had the best start at Napoli and club legend Dries Mertens now find himself resigned to the subs bench. 

Elsewhere, Andy runs us through Porto’s impressive win over Sporting and their impressive boss Sérgio Conceição. What a weekend in the FA Cup! Brave Brucey’s Brave Newcastle bravely hung on to force a replay with Rochdale, Sheffield Wednesday knocked out Brighton - and Osaze Urhoghide treated us to an adorable interview in the process - while Mike Dean inspired his beloved Tranmere to fight back from 3-0 down to draw with Watford. Lucky them.

You join us in the Emerald Isle for today’s episode of Greatest Games, in association with The Blizzard. We’re taking a look at a historic afternoon for Irish football from 2001, alongside JOE’s Dion Fanning!

The Netherlands arrived at Lansdowne Road with qualification for the 2002 World Cup on the line, while Mick McCarthy’s men had enjoyed a hugely successful qualifying campaign. Louis van Gaal had began to drift from his traditional 4-3-3 philosophy by this point, after a tough spell at Barcelona, and as this game slipped through their fingers he even finished the game playing four strikers.

In contrast, Dion remembers how this game was perhaps “the last time Irish football felt united and moving in the same direction.” The Green Army were still the usual underdogs but, with a fantastic goal from Jason McAteer and a stalwart performance from captain Roy Keane, they secured World Cup qualification in front of 35,000 at Lansdowne Road.
